Each week CTN records the Loughborough Echo together with recordings of other weekly and monthly magazines – a total of between 8 and 12 hours of listening. Last week it was the Soar Valley Rotary team’s turn to produce the recording and pictured during the recording session in Rothley are Elizabeth and Ivan Brookes, Alastair Wood and Alan Meredith. This was then duplicated for CTN by Loughborough University and sent out free on a memory stick in a yellow pouch to listeners. When the listeners have finished with the recording, they put it back into the pouch, turn the label over on the pouch and post it back free to CTN. If you, or you know someone who would be interested in receiving this free service, then telephone Ann Parsons on 01509 232422 (mail@charnwoodties.co.uk) who will arrange for a CTN volunteer to ring you and arrange to deliver a simple to use mp3 player free and to put you onto the weekly mailing list. Not being able to keep up with local news and magazine articles can be very isolating so contact CTN soon – we look forward to hearing from you.

Councillor Iain Bentley Reports

I attended Charnwood Boroughs retiring Mayor David Gaskell accompanied by the mayoress and wife, Jan Gaskell who presented to Birstall Playgroup and Cancer research Charnwood cheques for £3285.72. The cheques were received on behalf of Birstall playgroup by Deborah Hoggar and for Cancer research Charnwood Brenda Sutherland Treasurer and Deena Tatham secretary. The event was held at the town hall in Loughborough on the 17th May and was attended by around 40 to 50 guests. These two charities were selected by David Gaskell at the start of his mayoral year, two local charities dear to both himself and the mayoress.

“Best year ever” says organisers of Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride The Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride, organised by local charity Alex’s Wish, reported its best year ever with over 250 cyclists recently taking to the 10, 20 or 50 mile routes. “The rain cleared away for us and the day was just beautiful,” says Emma Hallam, founder of Alex’s Wish a local Rothley based charity who raise money to fund clinical trials into finding treatments and, ultimately, a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy; a life limiting condition which affects boys across the UK including Emma’s son Alex, after whom the charity is named. “We are still receiving sponsorship money but to date over £10,000 has been raised making this one of our most popular and successful events that we run each year.” Lisa Bacon of SHB Solicitors who adopted Alex’s Wish as their Charity of the Year said, “Last year I cycled it and this year I marshalled for them and once again thoroughly enjoyed the event. Alex’s Wish is a fabulous charity to support and I’m looking forward to working closely with them again throughout this year.” Event sponsor and charity trustee Adam Flowers of Flowers Associates commented on the event saying, “I’m a very keen cyclist and have cycled this event for many years as well as taken part in other Alex’s Wish cycling challenges including the London to Paris challenge and the Prudential Ride London event. “As a local firm we are thrilled to support such a pro-active and positive charity as Alex’s Wish. I’m looking forward to being involved for many, many years to come and would urge anyone interested in getting out there and either challenging themselves or just getting a bit fitter to have a look at the events Alex’s Wish run and join in!” Added Emma, “It’s great to have good feedback on the event and to see everyone enjoying the routes. I really want to thank all the volunteers, marshals and sponsors too. Flowers Associates were our headline sponsor and we also received support from new sponsor Parkhill Building & Joinery as well as Cuppas of Rothley. We also had three returning sponsors from last year too Nisa (Bradleys store) in Rothley were the events first-aid sponsors, The Woodmans Stroke Pub in Rothley were the communications sponsor and Pedal Power were the on-site bike specialists. Without their support this event would be almost impossible to put on. Thank you, thank you, thank you!” To find out about other Alex’s Wish events please visit their website: www.alexswish.co.uk

Give it a Grow: Herbs Basil – have you ever bought a pot of basil from a supermarket? How long has it lasted? Well here’s a tip to prolong the life and usefulness of this delicious herb. Take it out of the plastic pot and you’ll see just how many basil plants are crammed into this one space; they long to be freed! Basil prefers to have space and thrives with just one plant per pot, so carefully prise apart the tangled web of congested roots and plant one to three plants into a fresh pot of soil.

Pauline takes over the chains of office at Charnwood A new Mayor of Charnwood has taken over the chains of office for 2017/18.

Any indoor plants need a pot with holes in (for drainage), which is placed in another container/ pot, to enable watering. [Pop into our local charity shop for a wide selection of containers/ pots, which can be used for this purpose.] Leave on a sunny window sill and water frequently but do not drown it (as they don’t like to sit in water), and watch it grow. The leaves have a lovely scent, will become much larger and can be picked off individually to be enjoyed in salads, mixed with pasta, and are especially nice with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and olive oil: a treat on a warm summer evening. [Also, if you pinch out the new shoots from the top of the plant, it makes the plant bushier, so the more you eat, the more the plant will produce!] If you don’t have access to soil or pots, you could ask a neighbour if they could spare some, or you could experiment with placing a few of the basil plants in a jar with a small amount of water in the bottom, changing the water frequently to stop it stagnating/ going smelly. Chives – A garden herb that ticks all the boxes! Edible leaves and flowers, attractive to pollinating insects, beautiful purple and green colours, comes back year after year (even in cold weather), has pretty seed heads which spread easily (or can be saved for new plants next year), can be encouraged to flower twice a year (May and August, if cut low after flowering in May). If you’re unsure where to get hold of some chive plants, ask your local Master Gardeners; they may even be able to give you some for free, to get you started!

Cllr Ranson has chosen two causes to support, Myaware and Loughborough Wellbeing Café.

This year’s Watermead Challenge charity run is being held at 7pm on Tuesday 11th July 2017. There are the usual five and three mile courses. Race Director, Chris Battye commented “ the two distances appeal to a range of abilities from novice runners to the more experienced. The flat lakeside course is popular as it offers the chance to achieve a personal best time.”

Cllr Ranson will attend around 500 events over the coming 12 months with her consort, husband Trevor. The Mayor said: “It is an honour and a privilege to serve Charnwood and we are both looking forward to meeting some extraordinary people at many events during our year of office. “We will be doing our best to represent the borough and help promote the good work that many people are doing for the benefit of others.”

Leicestershire Masters Gardeners, is a volunteer scheme, run by ‘Garden Organic’, training and supporting their volunteers to promote the benefits of ‘growing your own food’, equipping them to provide advice and support to people in their local neighbourhood. For more information visit:

Watermead Challenge 2017

Councillor Pauline Ranson was appointed as the borough’s first citizen on Monday May 22 at the council’s annual meeting at Loughborough Town Hall.

Myaware is a national charity supporting people living with myasthenia, a group of rare neuromuscular disease characterised by fluctuating and sometimes fatal muscle weaknesses. A local support group regularly meets in Loughborough. The cause was chosen as it is close to the Mayor's heart as husband Trevor was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis five years ago. The Wellbeing Café meets every month at Loughborough Library and is for adults who experience mental health problems. The café provides regular activities such as yoga, mindfulness and arts and crafts. Cllr Ranson takes over the chains of office from Cllr David Gaskell who said with wife Jan, they had had a wonderful year attending nearly 500 events. They met a number of wonderful people and attended two royal visits. The Mayor’s appeal raised £7,000 for Cllr Gaskell’s chosen causes – Birstall Playgroup for Children with Special Needs and Cancer Research UK. The Deputy Mayor of Charnwood for 2017/18 is Cllr Christine Harris who was also appointed at the annual council meeting. Cllr Harris will be supported during her year of office by Deputy Mayoress Cynthia Bradley-Stevenson.

A ‘BARROW FULL OF GIFTS’ FOR ALL LOVERS OF FINE FODDER Barrow Upon Soar gets a new deli gift shop! The Blacksmiths Arms, located in the village of Barrow Upon Soar, is opening its brand-new deli gift shop this bank holiday weekend and visitors are invited to come and look around; there’ll be complimentary fizz and refreshments on offer. The Michelin rated restaurant & bar, The Blacksmith Arms, opened its doors 4 years ago, offering a new, quality food experience to the people of Barrow and the surrounding area. Wanting to expand on their business, and offer a unique retail experience to the village, owners Jill Townend & Mark Hammond decided to open the deli gift shop. “Having grown up in Barrow, I wanted offer something back to the village” said Jill. “There’s something for everyone and who doesn’t need good food in their life! We felt the village deserved something really nice. The deli is imaginative, fun and full of surprises – come in and say hi!” The shop is located in the former farrier’s workshop, which has been sympathetically renovated by Jill’s partner, Mark. “Diners coming in for a bite to eat or simply a coffee can browse the shop at their leisure” said Mark. “Or, visitors to the shop can pop next door to the restaurant! The shop mirrors the restaurant’s opening times, so it’s perfect for that last-minute gift.” The shop opens from 10am, except for Mondays when the Blacksmiths Arms is closed. There are all sorts of exceptional food and gifts on offer including artisan cheeses, beautiful olive oil, jams & chutneys, chocolates and cakes. Customers are invited to create their own gift box; ‘pick and mix’ from any of the produce to prepare the perfect gift box to any size and budget.

The Annual General Meeting of the Syston and District Volunteer Centre will be held in at the Beedles Lake Golf Club on Monday 10th July 2017 starting at 2.00 p.m. immediately following the Community Lunch.

We have held two Open Days this season, the most recent, is pictured. We are always looking for new members and there is still plenty of time. Why not try a little taster? We run beginner sessions most Fridays and Mondays from 6 pm. There is no charge and no obligation, so you have nothing to lose. All you need is flat soled shoes or trainers. We supply everything else. Other times can be arranged to suit so please give my good friends John and Carolyn a ring on 2675947. If you want to take things further, our first year fee for new bowlers is only £20. Good value fun in anybody's book.

All Members are invited to attend this meeting which will receive the annual report of the Board of Trustees and the certified accounts covering the Centre’s activities over the past year. Those Members in attendance will also have the opportunity to elect the Board of Trustees to serve for the period up to the close of the 2018 AGM.

The new ‘great night out’? Doing a jigsaw at home ADULT JIGSAWS have made a comeback, with sales soaring as a growing number of over- 50s discover ‘Jomo’ – the ‘joy of missing out’. It seems that more and more people are actively choosing to stay at home and relax, and even do jigsaws. Traditional watercolours and old-fashioned scenes are the most popular. Adult jigsaws are just one of a number of recent retail trends reflected in the latest Consumer Price Index. Other items include gin (after a 13-year absence) and soya milk (for the first time).

How you can help Everyone can play a role in helping the RNLI prevent drowning. Look out for Respect the Water adverts in cinemas, on billboards and online and listen out for it on radio stations across the UK and Republic of Ireland this summer. Watch the film at www.respectthewater.com, share it with your mates, and use the hashtag #RespectTheWater on social media.

Around 190 people accidentally die at the British and Irish coasts each year, with around half never intending to go into the water in the first place.

Remember there are two simple pieces of advice that can help save lives this summer – float to live and call 999. The more people are aware of this advice, the more chance everyone has of staying alive.

Respect the Water wherever you are WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU SEE SOMEONE IN TROUBLE IN THE WATER?

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. Respect the Water is a vital part of the RNLI's work to halve coastal drownings by 2024.

All too often, people’s first instinct is to go into the water. As a result, too many people drown trying to save others or their pets.

Everyone who falls unexpectedly into cold water wants to follow the same instinct, to swim hard and to fight the cold water. But when people fight it, chances are, they lose.

If you see someone in danger of drowning at the coast, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard straight away. Look for something that floats or that they can hold on to and throw it out to them. Helping you stay safe

If you find yourself unexpectedly in the water, do as little as possible, and float. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF BRITISH AND IRISH COASTAL WATERS IS 12- 15ºC, COLD ENOUGH TO CAUSE COLD WATER SHOCK. Cold water shock makes you gasp uncontrollably and breathe in water, which can quickly lead to drowning.

AT THE BEACH •

Go to a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags.

Before going into the sea, consider your ability and the conditions; swimming in the sea is very different to swimming in a pool.

When you enter the water, take time to acclimatise to the temperature.

Have someone watching you from the beach and make sure they are able to call for help.

When you are near open water, keep away from the edge, stick to designated paths and look out for safety signs.

Keep clear of uneven, unstable or slippery ground.

Avoid walking alone or at night, and always carry a means of calling for help.

If you are exploring the coastline, always get local advice on the tide to make sure you don’t get cut off.

ON THE WATER •

Carry a means of calling for help in case you do end up in trouble.

Wear an appropriate flotation device, such as a lifejacket or buoyancy aid – it could save your life.

If you are going out alone, tell someone ashore your plans and what time you expect to be back.

Fight your instinct, not the water

North Leicester MG Club’s 2017 Charnwood Caper Run In early May, over eighty cars took part in the Charnwood Caper Classic and Sports Car Run, an annual event organised by the North Leicester MG Club since 2004. Nearly half of the entrants had done the “Caperâ€? before, with many of those returning for at least the third time. Each year a different route of around eighty miles is devised by the club, largely along country lanes, terminating at a place of interest within, or just outside, Leicestershire. This year, the run started at Quorn and Woodhouse station on the Great Central heritage railway. After a cup of tea or coffee in the station’s Butler-Henderson CafĂŠ, the drivers were flagged away to begin their 40-mile journey through northwest Leicestershire and south Derbyshire to Bretby Garden Centre for a half-way break. The run’s 35-mile second leg finished at Elvaston Castle Country Park in Derbyshire. Although not a particularly warm day, it was dry and sunny enough to allow those in convertible machinery to indulge in some “top downâ€? motoring.

Two Newfoundland Dogs Find New Homes After Makeover By The Groom Room Two Newfoundland dogs - four year old Koda and three year old Rio have found new homes after a dramatic makeover. The dogs came into Woodside Animal Centre – the Leicester branch of the RSPCA – along with a further Newfoundland, 8 year old Bethan, after their owner had fallen ill and could no longer take care of them. All three were in a sorry state with long, matted coats which were causing them serious problems.

Cars from every decade since the 1930s turned out, the oldest being a 1938 MG VA Tickford, and the newest an MG TF LE500 from 2010. Besides the contingent of over seventy MGs, eleven other marques were represented including Mini, Morris and Mercedes. Participating crews had travelled from twelve different counties to take part, with three covering over eighty miles to get to the start venue. The longest journey was undertaken by Trevor and Sue Taylor, who received a prize for their 96-mile drive from Shropshire in their 1979 MGB Roadster. At Elvaston, a dedicated parking area was provided, which allowed for the cars to be lined up on either side of one of the park’s roadways. Here, the display of classics attracted a lot of interest from the country park’s many visitors. Amongst the twenty or more MGB Roadsters on view was one from Leicestershire which had been owned by its driver, Su Hatton, from new. The car dates back to 1972, and of necessity served as a family runabout back then. Nowadays, it leads an easier life, and has been kept in remarkably good condition, looking virtually new despite its 45 years of use. North Leicester MG Club chairman, Colin Readwin, said, “The meticulous planning by a dedicated team of club members has delivered another successful Charnwood Caper, which will enable us to make a substantial donation to this year’s nominated local charity, Steps Conductive Education Centre. There has been a good response from participants, with positive feedback both on the day and via email. One, who was on their firstever MG event, wrote: “What a great day! A friendly group, a well-planned outing, clear and easy route notes. The route was fantastic.

“The animals were really struggling to see, had problems with their ears and were visibly uncomfortable, explained Kim Talbot, Animal Care Specialist at Woodside. “Their coats were so long and matted we couldn’t even carry out the neutering procedure. We knew the dogs would need professional grooming, but that it would be expensive for such large dogs. But a local grooming service – The Groom Room, based at Pets at Home, Fosse Park – came to the rescue, inviting the three for a much-needed pampering session. “They looked amazing when they’d had their coats sorted out, said Kim. “You could actually see what stunning dogs they are! And they just seemed so much happier. Koda and Rio were both were snapped up the following week and are now settling nicely into their new homes. Bethan, who came into the centre wary of people and in need of a little more paw holding from Kim, had to wait for her pampering session. But

for a special family to offer her a new forever home too. “We’re so grateful to the Groom Room,â€? said Kim. “If they hadn’t stepped in, we wouldn’t have been able to get the same result for the dogs.â€? “It costs nearly ÂŁ20,000 per week to run the Centre and we are entirely reliant on donations and support from organisations like the Groom Room to be able to help dogs like Koda, Rio and Bethan.â€? Michelle Capwell, The Groom Rooms Salon Manager said: “We were really pleased to help and it was lovely to see the girls so transformed. We’re delighted that Koda and Rio have found new homes and wish Bethan the same good luck.â€? If you are interested in adopting Bethan, contact the centre on: 0116 233 6677, or visit Woodside Animal Centre, 190 Scudamore Road, Leicester, LE3 1UQ.
