Joe’s Jog, now in its fifth year, will take place before the Mattioli Woods Rothley 10k running event which takes place in the Leicestershire village on Tuesday 12 June.

ANDREW LEWIS M: 07504 634 838 E: andy@openboxpromotions.co.uk

The inclusive and family-friendly fun run gives families and children aged seven and over the chance to be part of the Rothley 10k evening.

Joe was 14 when he collapsed and died suddenly while out jogging near his Rothley home. He was a victim of SADS – sudden arrhythmic death syndrome – a heart condition which can strike anyone at any time, particularly otherwise fit and healthy young people.

Since Joe’s death, the JHMT continues to raise awareness of SADS and sudden heart deaths. The charity provides free CPR training, helps to fund community defibrillators and campaigns for better understanding of SADS. The JHMT also runs the Inspire Awards, a small grants scheme that helps inspire young people to fulfill their potential – something which the victims of SADS are cruelly denied.

Steve Humphries, chair of the JHMT, said: “This is another chance for more families to stride out together at JHMT’s annual fun run, which helps bring the community together in memory of Joe and helps to raise vital funds for JHMT's ongoing work to reduce the incidence of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) in young people.

OLD ENGLISH FAIR RE-ENACTMENT Age UK 2018 PAINTING CHALLENGE Charnwood Social Drop-in We are a friendly Social Drop-In for anyone over 50, whether you are just lonely, recently bereaved, divorced, a couple or just wanting to meet other locals. Information and advice on a range of age-related issues offered. We meet at the Tesco Community Room, Tesco Park Road, Loughborough on 2nd & 4th Thursday of the Month between 10am – 12noon. Free refreshments and a warm welcome awaits you.

The attached pages are from a programme showing the very interesting and imaginative titles of 72 paintings which were displayed at the ‘Old English Fair’ held on 21-23 June 1928. It was held at Birstall School, which is now the Village Hall. What became of the original pictures? Does anyone in Birstall have a piece of original work?

Jeanette Silver – 01509 260327

Mr John Kilby of the local Historical Society had the document amongst his vast array of local items of interest and passed it on to a member of the Birstall and District Art Society, Rita Cowham, as he thought it might be of interest to all members of BADAS.

With such interesting titles to the pieces originally shown, it conjured up a challenge. The challenge is that members paint/ draw/ sketch their own A4 versions of the titles. The work can be made using any materials to suit the artist. To reduce costs, the finished work will not be framed. All will be displayed at a Society event in the Village Hall on Saturday 23 June 2018, exactly 90 years after the original exhibition. The event will not be open to the public however, pictures will also be photographed and displayed on our website. www.badas.co.uk - The titles are to be ‘drawn out of a hat’, so that members have no choice of topic.

F l ower Power Everybody loves flowers and our bowls club has recently been brightened up by the donation of two planters full of flowers from the charity, Men in Sheds. The photo shows Peter Allen, a keen bowler, presenting the planters on behalf of the charity to club Chairperson Carolyn Foster. Peter spent his working life in carpentry and joinery and passes on his skills to everyone involved in woodworking projects. St Margaret's Co-operative Bowls Club is extremly grateful for the donation. Men in Sheds, an offshoot of Age UK, provides opportunities for friendship whilst doing 'man' things with wood and of course resting and drinking lots of tea. The charity very much depends on donations of unwanted timber. St Margaret's Bowls Club is just starting a new season and welcomes new bowlers of all ages and abilities. Results are in for this year's Largest Loser A woman from Loughborough has landed a 12-month membership at Fusion Lifestyle after winning this year’s Largest Loser competition. Donna Barnett, 50, along with 18 other participants, completed the Largest Loser programme run by Charnwood Borough Council’s Active Charnwood team. The 10-week programme saw 19 participants lose a combined 161lbs – more than 11 stone - and had an average body fat loss of 2.8 per cent each. Donna, who lost just under a stone and a half, said: “I’d like to thank the Active Charnwood team for putting together a fun and friendly Largest Loser programme. “I have always struggled to lose weight but going to Largest Loser has given me a real kick-start on my weight-loss journey. “The team are very supportive and above all positive. The workouts are great, motivating and make exercise fun.” Cllr Brian Page, lead member for communities, safety and wellbeing at the council, said: “I’d like to congratulate Donna and everyone else for taking part in this year’s Largest Loser programme and hope they feel better for completing it.” The Largest Loser programme took place at Charnwood College and it runs every year. Nick Evatt, divisional sports & community development manager at Fusion said: “Firstly, massive congratulations to Donna and all of the other participants who took part in Largest Loser. “It is a fantastic programme that Active Charnwood have put together and Fusion are delighted that we can support the scheme.” For more information on activities in your area visit www.charnwoodsport.org.ukcontact the Active Charnwood team on active.together@charnwood.gov.uk

Monthly Report from Councillor Renata Jones Charnwood member grants Thanks so much to all who responded to my consultation exercise regards member grants in my last report. I’m happy to update you with news that my inbox was flooded with support for some funds to go towards a CCTV installation for Birstall project. Two members of the community have volunteered to lead on the bid forms, and I’ve supplied them with the draft application form we have had from borough council to process this request. I believe the individuals leading the bid would like CCTV to focus on shopping areas in Birstall. I understand the total project could cost in the region of £15k, so my portion of potential funds will be dependant on securing other funding in tandem before it can go ahead. Another project came forward, restoration of Wanlip’s historic ice house. I’ve also supplied application forms to a member of the community who seems willing to lead on this bid. For those of you who may not know, and ice house is a giant and somewhat fascinating room which is mostly underground. A great example to see in fully restored glory can be seen at nearby Rockingham Castle, which is a great day out I’d recommend. Basically, before fridges existed, in great manor houses, or castles, they’d collect and shovel all the snow and ice from winter into an ice house underground. Stored in a cool room, hidden from sunlight, and in such a vast building and quantity, that ice would mostly last and very slowly thaw during summer. In here, and on top of the ice, all manner of foods could be preserved. Ladders adorned the walls, allowing access to food, as the ice slowly melted over passing months. Wanlip has one, close to our secondary school. There was previously a large landowners house, on the site where this school now sits, many years ago. This could well prove to be another

project that will require more funds than I have at my authority to gift. So will also potentially be a part portion, dependant on securing additional funds, before project can proceed. I’ll be endeavouring to get feedback on support for funding the ice house restoration when I visit Wanlip’s next parish meeting, to be held soon, at time of writing this report. In the event both projects apply and have community support, my current thinking is to split the funds accordingly to support both projects. I’ll pop a safety net clause in, that should either project not generate enough collective funds to proceed, those funds can be reallocated to the other cause.

RIP, Cllr. David Slater CC As I write my latest report, it just so happens to coincide with some very sad breaking news, that a fellow borough councillor, and county councillor for our area, has passed away. David was a county councillor for Syston and Wanlip. A borough councillor for Quorn. And former leader for Charnwood borough council I serve upon. I had only recently heard he was unwell. Suffering with a condition my father had suffered from. Whilst serious, my father had recovered from it many years ago, so I was, seemingly, mistakenly, confident David would recover too. Tragically, he did not. I heard he was unwell late on Friday night. I heard prior to that, he’d been in hospital a couple of weeks. Sunday morning, I had an email to say, he had slipped away in the night. Monday’s full council the next day was a very sombre occasion. Many wore black. Statements on items and party on party wrangling speeches subsided, as many said they’d simply email later, instead out of respect. We rattled through items with a quite reverence instead. Then the floor was opened to tributes. I heard at the start of the

Parish Councillor Surgeries The first Parish Council Surgery was held on Saturday, 5th May 2018 in the old Council office building on the Sibson Road car park. Councillors were very pleased with the response that this received and were very glad to be able to help in a number of the concerns raised by residents.

meeting we could say a few words at the end. I made a few quick notes, thought about what I could say. But as we got to the time, I heard moving tributes from many who had known him better or longer than I. I didn’t feel prepared, like I make sure I usually do, when speaking in the council chamber. So refrained from speaking. I’ll make my tribute here instead. But how can one ever prepare for such situations? It seemed a very sudden and unexpected passing. I knew him through this work, our council business. And when speaking about council matters he would speak with passion and enthusiasm. He could be serious, however he could also enjoy a joke and be fun. There’s perhaps not nearly enough of that in the world. When he started to wind down to retire, stepping down as leader of our borough, he took on chair of plans committee. I sat in on the first meeting of this nature with him as chair, my acting as a substitute for another councillor who could not be there. It was the longest and funniest council meeting I’ve ever sat on to date. Given there’s a site visit bus trip, so us non planning officer councillors know what we’re talking about in the meeting, this added to time taken. All in all it ran from Midday to ten to midnight. Best practice for council meetings is two hours of debate. It was a crazy meeting, but he did believe all applications should be heard. And given just as much importance as each other. Near the end of the meeting some of us were boarding hysterical, simply from tiredness. When suddenly we had a very moving, account. From a resident who was beyond stressed about a noise complaint. I believe we settled, calmed, voted for noise reduction implementation. As late as it was it was right that application was heard. And right it was given equal importance of consideration, as all the rest we had heard that evening. It’s been lovely to read all the tributes about him on email. To hear moving speeches at council. To read recollections online. Council live tweeted several during our meeting. I join the chorus in offering his family my thoughts, prayers, sympathy, comfort, for their loss, and at this difficult time. But more than that. It’s a reminder that life is too short. So I want to take this opportunity to proffer some philosophy. Hug your loved ones. Be brave. Be bold. And enjoy life to the fullest you can, while you can. Life can be too fleeting not to. Make the most of it. All my love and best wishes to you all, until next time.

Regards, Renata

The Parish Council agreed to trial the surgeries for six months and for them to be held on the first Saturday of every month from 10am – 12pm, the dates for the remaining five are: • 2nd June 2018

• 7th July 2018

• 4th August 2018

• 1st September 2018 • 6th October 2018 The Councillors look forward to meeting you there.

Watermead Challenge Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance 2018 Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Westminster Law will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

Wreake Valley and Syston Rotary Clubs are holding the eighth Watermead Challenge charity run at Watermead Country Park on Tuesday 3rd July 2018. The fairly flat three and five mile course around the park’s attractive lakes offers experienced and novice runners the opportunity to set a personal best time. Full details of how to enter can be found at www.wreakevalley rotary.org.uk. Chris Battye, Race Director commented: “last year we had nearly five hundred entries for this popular event. This year’s proceeds will be shared amongst three charities: Dementia UK, Leicestershire Childrens Holiday Centre and HCPT pilgrimage holidays. Venue restrictions mean numbers are limited to 500. Please enter early to avoid disappointment.

The White Horse Duck Race The 9th White Horse Birstall annual charity duck race was bathed in Sunshine and the people of Birstall flocked to the White Horse for this bank holiday extravaganza.

Hema chair of Hallam Fields School PTA commented “The Duck Race was a fantastic community event enjoyed by local families. It was a great fundraiser for Hallam Fields School PTA, we raised £240. As a new school it was lovely to be part of the wider Birstall community and be supported by those who attended” Leah Russell chair of Riverside PTA said “we

The winning duck was number 744 and two winners each received £100. 1900 ducks raced and there were more than 30 other prizes most with a value over £30. A grand total of £4003 was raised, £3,546 was for Riverside School PTA’s school Pool fund and over £457 was for other local causes too. “I am really happy with this year’s event, the sun shone and the stalls, games and activities were bustling and the Duck Race crowds along the Towpath was a sight to be seen! It really was a community effort, with lots of people helping to make it a special day and also the funds raised will benefit more than one community group” said Charlotte Foy Duck Race organiser. Gemma Lawrenson from Girl guiding in Birstall said they made £107 and the money will be split between the Guides selected to go on various International camps they are attending. It’s going to be an awesome experience for the girls!” she said. Birstall United Juniors Football club also raised over £100. Acorn under 5’s playgroup created Duck Wands for the younger children and raised £10. “We loved the day seeing many ‘grown up Acorns’ and doing something for the community” said Jackie Bateman

Countywide campaign to stop fly-tipping

A new campaign to stop people illegally dumping their rubbish in Leicestershire has launched.
