Making Christmas Special

JOIN & FOLLOW US

This overwhelmingly popular campaign launched on 1st November this year for donations of small gifts for older people in hospital on Christmas Day. The campaign has run with Leicester’s Hospitals for the past 5 years and we are delighted that older people in community hospitals now also benefit. Gift bags (please do not wrap gifts) of a few small items can be donated at any of our Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland shops or resource centres by 14th December. This campaign really does make a difference to older people unable to return home for Christmas and possibly not receiving any other gift on Christmas Day.

ST. JAMES MONDAY GROUP On 12th November we had an evening with Colleen Powell, our hedgehog rescuer, finding out how to help hedgehogs. She made us aware of the dangers in our gardens for these busy, but nearly blind, useful little creatures; ponds they cannot escape from; open drains; over-zealous gardeners! We must all be more aware of other users of our gardens, leaving a little of our ground to provide shelter for hedgehogs especially. Plastic netting and, of course, discarded fishing lines and string are all dangerous for animals and birds alike (we have seen so many examples of this, haven't we, on wildlife programmes). Colleen brought one of her 'guests' along, and he took the attention in his stride, a real gentleman! And who knew they like chicken-based cat biscuits! On 10th December we will be having our Christmas Party, contributing to and partaking of food, fellowship and fun, the most important being the fellowship and the friends we meet in our Monday Group in the Age Concern rooms at the Village Hall. Please come and join us, on the 2nd Monday of every month at 7.30 p.m.

Hundreds supported to quit smoking for Stoptober In-house service helps people kick the habit More than 300 people in Leicestershire attempted to ditch the cigarettes during last month’s Stoptober challenge. Figures show a total of 332 people were supported by our in-house QuitReady service. We are delighted that more than 300 Leicestershire residents took part in Stoptober as kicking the habit can be difficult. “Sadly, smoking is still a leading cause of premature death, which is why we would encourage people to sign up to our free service. Councillor Pam Posnett, cabinet member for health and wellbeing Evidence shows that people who quit for 28-days, are five times more likely to stop smoking for good. However, QuitReady advisors say that the first 12 months as an ex-smoker may still present challenges and have issued some top tips to stay smoke free: Remind yourself of the reasons you decided to quit in the first place; • Make a list of all the good things quitting smoking has given you so far; • Keep busy and if you want to smoke, distract yourself – cravings shouldn’t last for more than five minutes; • The support of friends and family can be vital – tell them that you are determined to quit for good and let them know how they can help you; • Staying smoke free is a big achievement. So whether you buy yourself something special with the money you have saved, or go out for a meal with friends, make sure you treat yourself. You can contact QuitReady for stop smoking advice and support, including free stop smoking medication and E-Cigarette starter kits with follow on nicotine liquids, by calling 0345 646 66 66, texting 'ready' to 66777 or visiting:

Need Some Help with the Behaviour of the Family Member you are caring for?

Are you a Secret Santa? If so, why not run for LOROS Hospice! IN DECEMBER, hundreds of people will be running dressed in their best red suits as Santa Claus, to support the Hospice.

Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland have listened to local Family Carers pleas for help in learning how to handle repetitive, difficult or challenging behaviour from the family members that they are caring for. This could be anything from refusing to get dressed, refusing assistance, refusing to eat, to encountering potentially vulnerable situations. How do you maintain that loving relationship when the person you care for is pushing you to the limit or you simply don’t know how to respond? 

With the kind support of Cedar Mews Care Home in Birstall, there will be a Professional Trainer on hand delivering an interactive session on how best to manage situations at our next Family Carers Workshop which takes place on Wednesday 28 November between 2pm & 4pm. We anticipate this will be a well attended session and ask you to book via Age UK on 01509 260327, Cedar Mews on 0116 267 4835 or Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/family-carers-workshop-tickets-51646727753?aff=ebdssbeac            

The fun runs which are organised by local Rotary Clubs, will be taking place at three locations across the county, so if you want to be a secret Santa and join the festive fun, why not signup to one of the events while raising valuable funds this Christmas? The runs are fun for all the family, as they can be walked as well as ran; you can even bring your four-legged friends along for the festivities, with prizes being offered for the ’Best Dressed Festive Pooch’ at the Loughborough and Melton Mowbray events. Fundraising co-ordinator, Debbie Dickman said: “These events are a fantastic way of bringing the community together during the festive season, while raising vital funds for the Hospice.

The White Horse reaches 10 years Ten years ago this month Charlotte Mills (as was), James Foy and Ady and Jenny Doyle re-opened the White Horse bringing back the ‘White Horse’ name and the pub for the community of Birstall. The couples, who at the time were neighbours, had become friends after buying chocolate Labradors from the same litter and the business is Named ‘The Chocolate Dogs company’ in their honour. Both Dogs are still going strong and enjoy a biscuit at the Dog Friendly Pub and a walk around Watermead. The couples who are both Birstall residents have worked hard to build the business and are very proud of what it has become. “The key is to reinvest and make sure the Pub itself and the staff are presentable, we also love to be on top of Food and Drink trendsâ€? commented James Foy. As well as beautifully presented Pub classics the White Horse offers an extensive range of Burgers and they also have a great variety of personally selected Beers, Wines and Spirits. The pub has many events to keep customers interested and will be launching the Christmas events soon. Sing Christmas always brings together singers from all the different churches, and the brass ensemble, also in its 10th year keeps the Christmas spirit going on Boxing day. The pub also has free children’s parties for Halloween and Christmas. More recent events added to the calendar are Special menus for Halloween and Burns night and the very popular evening with Gin raconteur the ‘Gintleman’ The Birstall Community is still very much at the heart of the business and over ÂŁ46,000 has been raised for local causes over the last 10 years. This impressive figure has been accumulated from 10 Duck Races for many local causes, 5 Great Birstall Bake offs for Macmillan cancer care and numerous Bags and Save the Children charity meals.

Parents encouraged to help prepare their children for school Help your child become 'school ready' Parents across Leicestershire are being encouraged to ensure children who are starting school for the first time next year are ‘ready’. The new campaign forms part of a shared view of ‘school readiness’ developed by the Leicestershire Children and Families Partnership, where families, early years providers, 0-5 services and schools work together to ensure the best start in life for young children. A leaflet has been sent to all county parents with children starting school for the first time in September 2019, along with information about how to apply for places. It explains what it means for a child to be ready for school and includes some practical suggestions as to how families can get involved. It’s important to ensure that children have the skills, dispositions and attitudes to be successful as they start this journey through school. “It’s also important that those who may need additional support are identified and supported early, in order that they reach their full potential. “Parents have a key role in helping to ensure their child is ready to continue their learning journey as they enter school and can get off to a flying start.” Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and families, and partnership chairman Examples of how parents can help their children become school ready include: • Building their confidence and praising them for their efforts and achievements • Letting them play with other children and encouraging sharing and taking turns • Trying and planning healthy meals, having regular routines and making sure they get enough sleep More information about being ready for school is available here online. The deadline for first time admissions to Leicestershire primary schools is January 15, 2019.

HIGHCLIFFE AMATEUR THEATRICAL SOCIETY (HATS) PANTOMIME 2018/19 “Babes in the Wood by Paul Reakes, presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd. January 10th, 11th, and 12th 2019.

Blue Peter is 60 years old

Rehearsals are now in full swing, with Robin determined to challenge the nasty Sheriff of Nottingham, in more ways than one. The more we practise, the nastier the Sheriff is becoming, he seems to think that he can win anything and anyone, just be raising his voice and ordering people around. Well, as we all know, that never works does it. The townsfolk along with others will be hoping that someone will come along and sort the Sheriff out. I wonder who will be able to do that???? Have you any ideas? Can you guess? Your help will be needed to make sure that the “goodie wins the day. So get your voices ready, lots of interaction is needed, shout and boo and jeer so the Sheriff gets the message that he is not the super duper hero of the Panto. For all of our regular audience members, see if you can identify the characters, clearly they are in disguise so it might take you a few minutes, but I am sure you will soon work it out. For our new audience members, I am sure that you will soon be coming back as much welcomed regulars and will also be able to identify people in a flash. Our scenery and costume crew are once again doing a fabulous job as you have come to expect, so a big thanks goes to them. So, to get you in the mood here are a few jokes. Here goes. 1.

What has two holes for the eyes and a slit for the beak? - A Robin Hood!

2.

What did the Sheriff of Nottingham say when Robin fired at him ? That was an arrow escape!

3.

Where did Robin's Merry Men go to buy their sweets? - The Friars Tuck Shop!

Are you getting in the mood. Want to hear some more. then make sure you book your tickets and come and see our fine cast, in their fine costumes, at our fabulous new Panto venue, Birstall Social Club. Dates:

Thursday January 10th 2019 and Friday January 11th 2019 at 7.15 p.m. Saturday January 12th 2019 at 2.00 p.m. and 7.00 p.m.

SIX DECADES after Owen Reed, then the BBC’s head of children’s TV, first spied the blue and white flag hoisted by a ship as it set sail and decided he had found the name for the a new TV programme that was meant to be a voyage of discovery for the nation’s kids, everyone has a favourite Blue Peter memory. Whether it’s John Noakes dropping his trousers to reveal his bobsleigh bruises — and his wife’s underwear (he had, according to his own account, put on her pants by mistake having dressed in the dark) — or, Noakes again, clambering up Nelson’s Column wearing nothing for protection but a combat jacket and a pair of flares, or Valerie Singleton working her way through the national supply of sticky-back plastic or, most memorably, an incontinent elephant called Lulu. At its peak, the show notched up eight million viewers an episode and received 1,000 letters a day from viewers, most of them after that most precious of small screen prizes, the Blue Peter badge. Of which there are, in fact, six types, from blue to gold (the highest award reserved for acts of remarkable courage — or for being David Beckham, JK Rowling or the Queen). The world’s longest-running children’s TV show — the 60th anniversary fell on 16 October 2018 — may no longer own the ratings, but its cultural significance remains unchallenged.

Christmas Concert, Thursday 6th Dec., Newtown Linford Church

In The Beans? Dr D McNeil Long ago there was on the radio a series called ‘Dick Barton, special agent’. He was never associated, as far as I know, with a bean. Yet again, Hill Hill on the Hill does sound a rather improbable name. Yet such places exist in our countryside. Have you ever wondered about a ‘thorpe’, a ‘by’, or a ‘ton’? And where on earth would someone concoct a name like Loughborough?

A ‘Colours of Christmas’ concert will be presented by Newtown Linford Choral Society at 7.30 pm on Thursday 6 December in the village church. The programme of music will follow the Christmas theme, including carols, Christmas songs, and classical pieces such as an excerpt from The Messiah. In addition, there will be songs about colours, such as ‘Fields of Gold’. There will be performances by the full choir, by the ‘After Eight’ quartet, and by the ‘Eight Misbehavin’ octet, making for a varied and entertaining evening.

These are some of the questions that confronted Julie Attard, late of the Charnwood Roots project and now the Charnwood Forest development manager, when she spoke at the Friends of the Charnwood Forest meeting on Monday (Charnwood – from the Celtic ‘carn’ – a pile of stones ans ‘wudu’ – a wood). She started her talk by stating that she was not a specialist in interpreting one At time one every At time one family’s every time family’s every dietworking included family’s dietonincluded bread diet included which breadrelied which bread relied which a constant on relied a aconstant on supply awho consta supp of names, but while the Roots project she hadon encountered lady All proceeds will be contributed to At the church redecoration fund. Tickets at £7.50 each including f f f was. Also there were a couple of books which she recommended which listed the meanings of place names in Leicestershire. refreshments, are available from Newtown Linford Stores and 01509 890771.

English place-names often come from ancient sources. In those times England was peopled by various cultures which usually swept in from the east. Each of these cultures had its own language, and over time place names may have been altered or added to by them. First – as far back as it is practical to go, as no doubt there were very ancient names from languages and peoples we know nothing about – are the Celts; with each wave of immigrants these people’s culture would have been pushed into the more remote, mountainous areas of these islands. Then there were the Romans, the Anglo-Saxons, the Vikings and the Normans. So - Breedon on the Hill is from three languages, each providing a word meaning ‘Hill’: thus ‘Hill Hill on the Hill’. Of course there are other complications. Land ownership may be celebrated by places being named after the owner. The syllables ‘ough’ in Loughborough are t MondayMonday 19t Monday 19 19t in two different ways, the second of which is derived from ‘Burgh’. pronounced This leads me to suspect that some names have been altered as time has gone by rather than by a new culture. I knew an old lady several years ago who pronounced ‘Woodhouse’ as “woodus’. As the spelling of the English language became more organised, think what chaos that could have caused. One of my ancestors had six children, and ‘McNeil’ was spelt differently in every case on the census return. If we did not find out about Barton in the Beans, at least she cleared up Woodhouse Eaves. The ‘Eaves’ part means ‘on the edge of’. Would you like to live in a place called ‘On The Edge Of Woodhouse’? People do, apparently without realising it.

Calling all knitters

Charity Christmas Card Pop-Up in Leicester

Time to dig out those knitting needles for the Big Knit

The festive season gets under way in Leicester when the Cards for Good Causes charity Christmas card shop opens in our exciting new venue at BISHOP STREET METHODIST CHURCH, off Town Hall Square. Buying Christmas cards through Cards for Good Causes is the best way to get access to the widest selection of Christmas cards available, as well as a fantastic range of seasonal gifts and products, while supporting a range of national and local charities.

It’s the return of the Big Knit campaign and Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling on Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to join in and get knitting! Whether a knitting ninja, purling pro, crochet connoisseur or just keen to have a go it’s time to get wild about wool and join the Big Knit. Now in its 15th year, the campaign is recruiting knitters to help create an impressive 1.6 million hats to adorn innocent smoothie bottles. For each be-hatted smoothie sold*, Age UK receives 25p, and that money helps the Charity support older people who are facing later life alone. Tony Donovan, Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland said: “We need local people to join us and help knit as many miniature hats as possible this winter to help us hit our huge 80,000 local target. It’s such a fun campaign to get behind and it does so much to help older people in our area. “The money raised will make a big difference to the lives of older people by funding our hugely important services and classes. These services, which include Day Care, dementia support, Men in Sheds and befriending amongst so many others, give local older people the chance to come along and make friends, learn new skills and most importantly have fun.” Last year alone, more than one million hats were lovingly created nationally, with designs including the hugely popular unicorn, grizzly bear, fluffy sheep and desert island. Bara Amouyal, innocent drinks, said: “The Big Knit has had such an incredible amount of support over the past 15 years and we are hugely grateful – we love seeing what miniature creations the nation can come up with! Through the Big Knit campaign, we want to do everything we can to make a difference to the lives of older people.” For more information on The Big Knit contact Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland on 0116 2992233 or visit https://www.ageuk.org.uk/leics/get-involved/fundraising/ the-big-knit/. Please send completed hats to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland at Lansdowne House, 113 Princess Road East, Leicester LE1 7LA or hand them in at any of our 24 shops or Resource Centres. This year’s hat knitting patterns are available to download, to find out more visit: www.ageuk.org.uk/bigknit or pop into any of our addresses to request a leaflet
