Bring sites Birstall Bowling Club’s charity starting to be fun day removed across the borough The process to remove bring sites across Charnwood has started in a move which will save taxpayers around £20,000 a year. The Council announced plans earlier in the year to remove 79 glass and aluminium recycling banks at a number of locations. The recycling banks are no longer necessary as the materials can be recycled in the Council’s kerbside scheme. A number of recycling banks have already been removed and the rest will be taken away throughout September and October. The plans do not affect charity recycling banks which often collect clothing, shoes and books or the household waste and recycling sites operated by the county council. The move will leave 34 bring sites with recycling banks for textiles, glass and some other items. Matt Bradford, head of cleansing and open spaces at the Council, said: “The reality of the situation is these recycling banks simply duplicate the kerbside recycling service so we are confident there will not be any impact on recycling levels in the borough. “To retain them means using taxpayers’ money to pay for something we do not really need and they were introduced 20 or 30 years ago when council recycling services were much more limited.”
Birstall Bowling Club’s charity fun day was held last month with 32 players involved in a unique fun game of bowls with a relaxed dress code, where everyone played in different positions on the rink instead of the usual format. Around £300 was raised for this year’s Presidents chosen charity, Birstall BAGS, a charity committed to supporting the local community in Birstall and surrounding areas through cancer awareness initiatives and the funding of equipment and services for the benefit of people living in the community with cancer. Meanwhile, two bowlers from Birstall Bowling Club were part of the Leicestershire team that won the Middleton Cup – the men’s National Inter-County Championship. John Hurst and Andy Wye played in the three group matches and the quarter final against Norfolk before finals day in Leamington Spa. A 113-103 semi final win over Yorkshire set up a final against Devon, who had won the title for the last three years. In a dramatic match, the scores were tied at 119-119 after the scheduled 21 ends, with an extra end required on all six rinks. Leicestershire won those extra ends 9-1 to secure the title for the first time since 1964.
Three Birstall ladies were involved at the National Championships, which also took place in Leamington Spa. Di Hurst reached the quarter final in the National Two Wood Championship, and in the Junior Singles, Noi Walker reached the third round (the last 16 in the country) while younger sister Deam lost out in the first round. Birstall won three titles and were runners up in another at the ladies county finals. Di Hurst won the two wood singles and Pa Walker won the champion of champions. Pa’s daughters Noi and Deam contested the under 25s final with Noi just beating younger sister Deam by two shots in a superb final. Birstall were runners up in the men’s county unbadged final, losing out to Narborough by seven shots. John Hurst was a semi finalist in the county champion of champions, and along with Andy Wye and Dave Smith, just missed out on a place in the county two wood triples final, losing on an extra end in the semi final.

ROTHLEY/BIRSTALL BIRDWATCHING CLUB
Tuesday, October 9th - THE REEDBEDS OF WATERMEAD by Dale Osborne. The ladies section of the club was formed 25 years ago and Brenda, shown in the blazer, was one of the founder members. She remembers the early days of the club. 'It was very exciting. Most of us were the wives of men bowlers who had started their club a couple of years earlier. Very few of us actually knew how to bowl at all!'
The first meeting of our Winter/Spring programme is an illustrated talk by Dale Osborne Senior Ranger 0f Watermead Park. Dale has managed the reedbeds since 1990. We will learn how they were created, the importance of this habitat, what wildlife they attract and what the future holds for this fragile system. Tuesday, October 9th at 7.30 p.m. The Rothley Centre, 12 Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley, LE7 7PR. Members are free. Visitors £2.50. New members and visitors are always welcome. Ample free car parking on site.
The ladies' section has flourished over the years with a great spirit of camaraderie. Brenda has held the post of President three times in her 25 years at the club; 'I consider it a great honour. We are looking forward to a celebratory match at the end of August against ladies from Bowls Leicestershire'.
Andy is a keen birdwatcher and ringer. We are used to Andy taking us around his local patch, Thornton Reservoir, so this illustrated talk is something completely different. Sri Lanka is a lovely destination for birdwatching but he is going to give us a slightly different twist on its natural history. Tuesday, November 13th. At 7.30 p.m. The Rothley Centre, 12 Mountsorrel visitors are Lane, Rothley, LE7 7PR. Members are free. Visitors £2.50. New members and always welcome. Ample free car parking on site.

Full steam ahead for Charnwood Community Lottery People are being urged to take a chance and make a difference by supporting Charnwood Community Lottery which launched recently.
Girl Guides to learn about money
Tickets for the lottery, which is being run by the borough council are now on sale and will help raise money for good causes, charities and voluntary organisations.
GIRL GUIDES are to learn how to look after money, after the introduction of a new ‘saver’ badge.
For every £1 ticket, 60p will go towards helping a good cause and players can win up to £25,000. The lottery was launched at Great Central Railway in Loughborough which has kindly donated an extra prize for the very first draw. Chris Traill, strategic director for neighbourhoods and wellbeing at the Council, said: “We are absolutely delighted to launch the Charnwood Community Lottery as it will help raise money for lots of good causes in the borough who do great work for the benefit of residents. “The lottery also means people can choose to help a specific group, perhaps one that’s close to their hearts, and possibly win anything up to £25,000. We hope the lottery is empowering for the organisations involved and for ticket buyers. As we’ve said, people can take a chance and make a difference “We would like to thank the groups who have signed up so far but I would encourage the many other fantastic organisations in Charnwood to consider getting involved. Simply visit the lottery website for more information. “The Council decided to set up a lottery to further support the local voluntary and community sector.” A number of groups have already signed up to be involved including: • Loughborough Leggo Youth Group • Marios Tinenti Centre • Peter Le Marchant Trust • Quorn Local History Group • Coping with Cancer in Leicestershire and Rutland • Shepshed Toy Library • Anstey Community Library • Gorse Covert Community Centre • Citizens Advice Charnwood • Go-Getta CIC • Loughborough Wellbeing Centre CIC Ltd • Living Without Abuse • Above & Beyond • Grange Park Centre • Falcon Support Services • Glebe House (Charnwood) Ltd • Shepshed Dolphins Swimming Group Caroline Darrall, chairperson at Loughborough Leggo, said: “We are pleased to join the Charnwood Lottery as it is a creative and effective way to raise much-needed regular funding, during difficult financial times. The money raised will help our young people with special needs to reach their full potential.” The first Charnwood Community Lottery draw takes place on September 29, 2018. To mark the occasion, the lottery has two additional prizes, an iPad and a dining experience for two at Great Central Railway worth over £100. To buy a ticket, please visit www.charnwoodlottery.co.uk where you will be asked to create an account. When a participant chooses to support one of the registered charities or good causes, the organisation will receive a 50p donation, with 10p going towards a central community fund. If no charity is chosen, all 60 pence goes to the community fund. The council will use the community fund to support local projects and good causes through its grants scheme. Lottery management company, Gatherwell, has been appointed to run the scheme, having already launched similar lotteries in places such as Melton Mowbray, Corby and Mansfield. Gatherwell's managing director Ben Speare said: "We are really pleased to see Charnwood Community Lottery being launched to the public and look forward to the organisations involved selling tickets to their supporters and raising the funds they need."
Girlguiding UK has created the badge with the aim of improving financial literacy among teenagers. The girls, aged 10 to 14, must prove that they can manage cash efficiently, budget effectively and put aside money for the future, in order to win the badge. The badge has been created in cooperation with the insurer Legal & General, and was felt to be important as money management is a skill they will need all their adult lives.
Numbers of bags plummet CONGRATULATIONS! We are using many fewer plastic bags. On average, we now use about 19 a year – as opposed to 140 a year. The number of disposable carrier bags issued by the seven biggest supermarket chains has declined by 86 per cent since the charge was introduced in 2015, according to statistics from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Michal Gove, the Environment Secretary, has said it is vital to reverse the ‘rising tide of plastic waste finding its ways into our rivers, seas and oceans, and the catastrophic impact this is having on our marine environment.’

ST. JAMES MONDAY GROUP Well - here is a group of ladies all off to buy new undies! We all learned quite a lot from Brenda Lund on the construction and fitting of bras at our meeting in July, together with much advice (who knew so much engineering expertise went in to making a bra?) Our usual meeting in August was replaced by our coach outing to Stamford on Friday 17th August. According to Sir Walter Scott it is "the finest stone town in England” and was declared a conservation area in 1967, with over 600 listed buildings in the town centre.
Apply now for 2019 secondary school places LEICESTERSHIRE parents and carers with children due to start at secondary school next year are being encouraged to apply for places at their preferred schools before October 31.
To paraphrase the song (and probably totally mis-quote it): "Didn't we have a loverly time, the day we went to Stamford?" And yes, we did. The sun shone and the coach was full. The market (absolutely huge) was in full swing, selling everything from socks to celery. Full of colour and scent and chat and people - a great day for all.
They will also find an interactive ‘Your Guide to education’ online to help focus their search and shortlist up to three preferred schools.
Our meeting in October (8th) in the Day Centre, School Lane, Birstall, will be where members of the group will be able to re-live and tell of their "Musical Memories". As this is such a wide spectrum and music is such a huge part of everybody's life, it is bound to raise some lovely and interesting memories.
Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and families, said: “Last year 96% of Leicestershire parents submitted their application online and we encourage people to use this approach.
As our programme is so diverse, a quite dramatic change now sees our November meeting showing us how to Help Hedgehogs - a talk by Colleen Powell, and if, like me, you haven't even seen a hedgehog for many years, it may be really good to see how to encourage these little creatures to come to our gardens and, perhaps, stay! We now think, seriously, of our Christmas event for this year, which will be on Saturday 17th November in St. James Community Area, from 12 noon to 2.00 p.m. We will be having a Soup and Puddings lunch, which sounds scrummy! There will, of course, be rolls and butter, wine and fruit juices. As well as tucking in to some lovely home-made soups and puds, there will be stalls with Christmas gifts for sale, Christmas cakes and Christmas wreaths for sale and to order. There will also be a raffle for a beautiful hand-made quilt, made by one of our members. This year's charity which we are supporting, the Baldwin Trust, will also have a stall with gifts for sale. We hope the proceeds from this sale will go a good way to providing a defibrillator for one of the boats they run.

The Bradgate Park Calendar had its official launch Stamford Arms, Groby, Leicester night at the on 8th August, and was received with much anticipation from all the members of The Bradgate Rotary Club and Peter Tyldesley (Director of Bradgate Park and Trust).
The calendar, now in its third year, has raised over £7000 for the Bradgate Park Trust, a charity which relies on voluntary support and donations as well as projects such as this one to help run and maintain Bradgate Park. Bradgate Rotary Club have organised this wonderful project to provide a beautiful product to sell within the Bradgate Park shop, and in their online store, which along with the sponsorship of local companies will provide much needed income for the Trust. The calendar was commissioned by Bradgate Rotary Club, who support and help many local charities and community events, and was designed by Summer Designs a newly set up freelance Graphic designer who is passionate for work within the local community. The Rotary Club wish to give special thanks to the Leicester Forest Photographic Society who provided the photos for the calendar, they welcome anyone interested in their work to visit their Annual Summer Exhibition, or to one of their open evenings, more information at www.lfps.org.uk. Also a big thank you to Groby Allotment Society who provided the calendar with recipes of the month, all inspired by the locally grown produce fresh from the allotments. Copies of the calendar can be purchased from the Bradgate Park Shop and their online store (www.bradgatepark.org/shop) shortly and would make excellent gifts. The money raised from the sale of the calendars will go to the Bradgate Park Trust.
There is an opportunity to learn the craft yourself. Classes are being held at Groby Village Hall LE6 0DJ on Wednesday mornings. We begin again on September 12th 10 am to 12 30 and run for 30 weeks. You are welcome to attend a taster session where you will be introduced to the craft. Basic equipment may be borrowed for the first few weeks; the Tutor has Beginners Kits for sale if required. You may already be a lacemaker and looking for further help or join to an established group for social contact. Groby Lace Class has been running for over 15 years and a wonderful way to explore a new craft. For further information contact Susan Marlow, 0116 2365789 or email susanmarlow47@btinternet.com

St Margaret's by the sea Let us know about your World War One events
Everybody loves a break and where better to have one than at the seaside. Last month St Margaret's Bowls Club toured to the sunny south coast at Bournemouth. On the first morning we set off to Swanage where everyone enjoyed a few hours in glorious sunshine exploring the town, some walking on the clifftops, others enjoying the local hostelries - even a swim in the sea! In the afternoon we enjoyed a very hospitable match against the local club - see photo. The following day we played at Argyll Bowls Club in Bournemouth. This was a superb venue and again very friendly opposition. An unusual highlight of the match was one of our teams scoring a Hot Shot - a maximum score of 8 points on one end. On our last day we took a scenic drive to the New Forest playing at picturesque Brockenhurst Bowls Club.
Charnwood Borough Council will be supporting a series of events on Sunday November 11 to mark 100 years since the end of World War One. In addition to the annual remembrance parade in Loughborough, a Charnwood Heritage Plaque will be unveiled in Loughborough Market Place as a lasting reminder of the soldiers who gathered there before going to war. Other events in the town centre include a live showcase event supported by a big screen in the Market Place, a tea dance and exhibition at Loughborough Town Hall, Century of Stories at Charnwood Museum and a procession of a life size model of Songster Charnwood’s very own warhorse which will be covered in poppies handmade by local school children. There will also be a lighting of a beacon in Queen’s Park at 7pm as part of a nationwide beacon lighting scheme. If you’re hosting a remembrance Sunday parade or are planning on lighting a beacon, please contact the Business Support Team on neighbourhoods.communities@charnwood.gov.uk or by phone on 01509 634710. The Council will then add the information to its dedicated World War One commemoration webpage www.charnwood.gov.uk/WW1.
The award for the overall highest scoring player went to Chris Holmes. All in all a great trip, with everyone looking forward to the next bowls tour.
The Council is also currently part way through a £280,000 conservation project on the Carillon Tower in Queen’s Park in Loughborough which will be completed in time for November 11.

Christmas craft fair will raise vital funds for local heart charity On Sunday 4 November, local heart charity, *the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT) will be holding their annual Christmas craft fair. Now in its 3rd year, the event will be held at the new Mountsorrel Memorial Centre, and will be open from 10.30-4.30pm. The JHMT Christmas Fair will be a chance for Christmas shoppers to choose from a range beautiful gifts from a range of uniquely crafted items made with skill, love and care by talented local artisans. Items will include jewellery, shabby chic furniture, home interiors and accessories, paintings and artwork, glassware, candles, cards, craft gins, local fine wines and delicatessen goods all with the emphasis on quality products which are not available on the high street. Angie Humphries from the Trust said: “The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust was formed out of the tragic loss of my amazing son Joe who collapsed and died aged just 14 after a run with one of his best friends. “Joe was a victim of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS), a heart condition which causes sudden, unexpected death in young people and can often go undiagnosed. The void which was left by Joe’s tragically sudden death can never be filled, but Joe’s legacy is the fabulous work of the Trust created in his name (www.jhmt.org.uk) “By coming along to our Christmas craft fair, you can buy unique eclectic and beautiful gifts, have a piece of homemade cake with a cuppa and help to save young lives in the process.” The craft fair is free to attend – although a discretionary donation on entry would be very much appreciated. All proceeds will go to the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust. For more information on the work of the Trust, visit www.jhmt.org.uk
