SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES

A CHARITY, Tastelife, has been set up to help support families struggling with eating disorders. Aimed at both sufferers and their carers, it was the brainchild of two Church of England volunteers, whose own families were deeply traumatised by the problem. Tastelife offers courses run over eight weeks to help families with guidance on how to cope on a daily basis, and how to get onto the path of recovery. The courses are now on offer in 27 locations around the country, including Leicester and Hinckley. A new course, Awareness of Eating Disorders will be delivered in schools to help young people understand more about their attitudes and behaviour towards food. More details at:

ST JAMES MONDAY GROUP We 'kicked off' our February meeting with a visit and demonstration from a Podiatrist, which was highly informative. She stressed the importance of looking after our feet and also told us of the dreadful impact that can result from diabetes and other (rather nasty) foot conditions. We have had news of 'our' medical detection dog, Mary, and also a picture. She is a beautiful 'teenage' dog now, lively and a bit mischievous, but bright and doing well in her training and general socialisation with people and other dogs, which is absolutely essential to her future work. Monday Group members have now been asked to nominate another charity that we can support during the coming year, and we will vote on the choices put forward during our March meeting. The programme for the coming year is yet to be finalised, but so far contains such mouth-watering topics as 'The History of Spam'! I wonder if we will have samples? Or spam fritters? Or hash? The possibilities are (nearly) endless ... At the other end of the spectrum we will hear about 'The Laura Ashley story'; the lady who gave us such pretty and feminine clothing and fresh interior decor. I think it is going to be a very good year. As always, we welcome new members to the group in the Age Concern rooms of the Village Hall at 7.30 p.m. on the second Monday of every month. Tea and biccies - of course!

Bowls Club at Potters At the end of January members of St Margaret's Co-operative Bowls Club took a trip to Potters Bowls resort on the East Coast. The week in question is known as Bowls England week as many officials from the Indoor World Bowls Championships stay over which gives the ordinary club players the chance to mingle with the officials as well as competing with teams from across the country. Potters, who have hosted the Bowls World Championship for years, is well known for looking after its guests. The beds are comfortable and the meals are plentiful and delicious. There are many activities for non-bowlers. But of course the main activity for most visitors is bowls. Bowlers from St Margaret's at Potters.

Our club entered five teams. Our organizer Pat Dobson was thanked for her efforts by Greg Harlow and three times World Indoor Bowls Champion and Stuart Lake, a Bowls England Past President. See photo. All teams performed well, well enough in fact to earn a Top Club award for the highest average performance. All in all, the bowls holiday was a most enjoyable and successful break. Organizer Pat Dobson thanked by Greg Harlow and three times World Indoor Bowls Champion and Stuart Lake, a Bowls England Past President.

‘Bargains Galore!’ Jumble sale in support of Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation

New fine being introduced to tackle the issue of fly-tipping

Registered charity Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation is pleased to announce a Jumble Sale in support of the Foundation at Markfield congregational church hall on:

Fixed penalty notices have been introduced to take action against people who fail to dispose of their waste correctly and it ends up being fly-tipped.

Saturday 23rd March 2019 from 10.00 am – 12noon, Markfield Congregational Church Hall, Main Street, Markfield, Leicestershire, LE67 9UU

Charnwood Borough Council can now issue £400 fixed penalty notices to people who do not ensure their waste is disposed of by a licensed waste carrier

Anyone who produces waste has a legal duty of care to take all reasonable steps to ensure their waste is disposed of in the correct way. If any fly-tipped waste is traced back to the household it came from, the householder can be fined or prosecuted. Cllr Margaret Smidowicz, lead member for regulatory services said: “People need to take responsibility for their own waste and ensure it is disposed of correctly. “If fly-tipped waste can be traced back to the household it came from, we’ll now be able to issue fixed penalty notices for a duty of care offence. “It’s all part of the Council’s drive to prevent fly-tipping in the borough. Fly-tipping is a criminal offence and we will not tolerate it in Charnwood. “Fixed penalty notices mean we can fine offenders more quickly than going through the courts when the fines are sometimes of a similar amount. It’s a much speedier process.



“However, we will continue to use the court process where appropriate.” The fixed penalty notice for breaches of the ‘Duty of Care’ offence provides the Council with an alternative to prosecution in court. A fixed penalty notice can be issued if: • Fly-tipped waste can be traced back to an individual who is found to have failed to take reasonable steps to ensure they transferred the waste to an authorised person • An unauthorised carrier is found to be carrying household waste that was directly given to them by the occupier of a domestic property Helen Baxter Activities Coordinator at the Foundation said “A traditional jumble sale is something I remember from my childhood. In our increasingly throwaway society it’s so important recycle and reuse unwanted items of clothing and bric a brac! Drop in to our fundraising event and enjoy a traditional rummage for a bargain at our ‘Bargains Galore, Jumble Sale! She added “your support at our events in much appreciated, tea and coffee, will be served by our fabulous volunteers at a small charge’

• An individual is found to have transferred their household waste to an unauthorised person at a site that does not have a permit or exemption • The cost of a fixed penalty notice is £400 but there is an early payment incentive of £280 if paid within 10 days. People are reminded to only use a registered waste carrier to dispose of their waste. This can be confirmed by checking their paperwork. If you spot any fly-tipped waste, please call the borough council on 01509 634563 or use our online reporting form www.charnwood.gov.uk/fly_tipping. o

Help a toad to cross the road NEXT MONTH common toads all over the country will be on the move, heading back to the breeding ponds where they themselves were spawned. Sadly, many will never make it, because of busy roads. If you like toads, you can help them by joining the Toads on Roads project. It keeps a sharp eye out for ‘migratory crossings’ on certain roads. It helps the toads to cross safely, by coordinating local Toad Patrols who will actively help the toads get across the road, and also putting up road warning signs for motorists.

Join thousands and organise a Muddy Puddle Walk with your nursery or family to raise money this spring. This spring between the 13-19 May sees the return of the award-winning fundraising event for little ones– Peppa Pig’s Muddy Puddle Walk for Save the Children. Last year families and nurseries that took part in the event helped to raise £225,000 for Save the Children’s vital work and since its launch in 2017, Peppa Pig’s Muddy Puddle Walk has raised almost half a million pounds. This year the event is sponsored by The Entertainer (TheToyShop.com) and, to celebrate Save the Children’s centenary in 2019, the charity hopes that even more people will sign up, take part and donate. Sign up for your free Muddy Puddle Walk Fundraising Pack! https://www.savethechildren. org.uk/how-you-can-help/events-and-fundraising/muddy-puddle-walk

Toads on Roads has been running for more than 20 years, and saved thousands of toads. If you would like to know more, become a Toad Patroller, or register a toad crossing, please go to: https://www.froglife.org/whatwe-do/toads-on-roads

GOT AN ARTICLE TO SEND US? We are always on the lookout for local news. Please send articles to: yourlocal@ openboxpromotions.co.uk

The World Wide Web – 30 years on THE WORLD Wide Web was invented 30 years ago this month, on 12th March 1989, by Tim Berners-Lee while he was working at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory. His innovation – a global hypertext document system originally described by his superior as “vague but exciting – was intended to help scientists share data across a then obscure platform called the Internet, but his decision to make the source code freely available meant it took on a life of its own and is now used by almost everyone with a computer. He has never profited directly from his invention, but now spends much of his time trying to protect it from malign influences and is working on Solid, a project designed to provide “true data ownership as well as improved privacy. As a result of his original invention, Berners-Lee was named one of the 20th century’s most important figures by Time magazine, received the prestigious Turing Award for achievements in the computer sciences, and was honoured at the Olympics. He was also knighted by the Queen.

League update - We are sitting reasonably comfortably in mid table in Division 5 of the Leicestershire League in 7th place out of 9. To date, we have had 10 matches, which is why we may feel a little less comfy once our opposing teams catch up with the amount of games we've played. We've won 2, drawn 4 and lost 4. So many of those games have literally been on knife edges and could have gone the either way. February Club Nights/Fixtures 21st February - Club Night 28th February - HOME fixture vs Heathcote Arms 3 Club Nights tend to be relaxed and quite often, we do a little bit of coaching with our league players. When players have lost, drawn or maybe even won, myself and Mick Sandham give the players practical advice on what they could/should have done. We then usually move on to playing some friendlies amongst ourselves. League matches are a little more intense and require the room to be silent or very little ambient noise. You are welcome along on any night so please pop along to see what we're all about. New players are welcome along at any time - regardless of standard.

Fancy helping out by the waterside? The Baldwin Trust needs 15 volunteers FOLLOWING the launch of a nationwide fund raising campaign during November 2017, The Baldwin Trust, a local waterways based community charity, now has a different problem to solve! The Trust was set up in 1983 to help patients of the Baldwin Ward at the former Leicester Frith Hospital by giving them therapeutic trips on the tranquil waters of the local river and canal system. The Trust is a Charity crewed entirely by volunteers to provide enjoyable days out for people of all ages and physical abilities. The boats are fitted with ramps and lifts for easy access for wheelchairs and other mobility issues. They are also very happy to arrange trips for family and community groups wishing to have a great day on the water. Set the task of securing funds to replace both of its 30+ year old narrow boats; the funding team and volunteers have been successful in raising adequate funds to order the first of the new 68 foot long narrow boats. Construction will start in February and completion is expected during July 2019. Having transported nearly 2,000 members of our community on the canals and rivers of Leicestershire during 2018, the volunteers have been surprised and delighted by the level of support to acquire the first new boat but now find that the Trust needs more volunteers and experienced skippers to man the increased fleet of three boats by August this year! They never expected this to happen so quickly!( They also need money for the second boat!). They have recruited 15 new volunteers during the last 6 months but need at least 15 more to meet the growing demand from disadvantaged people of all ages to enjoy a day on the river! Can you help? Are you interested in using your spare time to help those less able than you? If you enjoy the outdoors and time by the waterside or may have some sailing experience, working with this Trust could be just right for you! The Trust operates 2 boats which are moored at Pillings marina and Thurmaston marina. each boat has a skipper and 2 crew. They have 4,5,6,and 7 hour trips, and operate from Easter to the end of October. In general terms most volunteers work one day a week, or when they can spare the time. You can visit the web site for the Trust at www.baldwintrust.co.uk and fill out the volunteer application form and return it to the Trustor you can write to: The Secretary, 52, Johnson Road, Birstall, Leicester, LE4 3AS with your details.

Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride returns for its 9th year Every mile cycled brings us closer to a cure The Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride is back again for its 9th year running. With up to 300 cyclists taking part last year, the organisers Alex’s Wish are pleased to announce it will be taking place on Sunday, 12th May. This year’s main sponsor is Glynis Wright and Partners, with additional sponsorship from Nisa (Bradleys store) in Rothley, The Woodmans Stroke Pub in Rothley, United Carpets and Jay Webb Consultancy with Pedal Power as the on-site bike specialists. Emma Hallam Charity Founder and Alex’s Mum says “It would be so lovely to have you come along and join us this year - you’ll get a healthy dose of fresh air, enjoy spectacular views around the stunning Charnwood Forest whilst cycling for an incredibly worthwhile cause. It’s a fabulous opportunity to get back into cycling again after the winter months, so whether or not you are a keen cyclist, there’s never been a better time to dust of your bike in time for the summer months. We have a 10-mile, 20-mile and a 50-mile cycle route. The 10-mile route will provide an entry level distance for first time participants, whilst the 50-mile route will be a longer and more challenging route for those who want to push themselves further and the 20 and 50 mile includes a steep climb up Beacon Hill road. We are incredibly well supported locally and it’s always nice to see our supporters out and about on their bikes, having fun and raising much needed funds for Alex’s Wish. The start and finish line is at The Rothley Centre in Rothley, Leicestershire with the route taking place on open roads. “The route is well sign-posted, explains Emma, “and because the event takes place on a Sunday morning the roads tend to be quiet with traffic. At the end, you’ll be treated to complimentary yummy home cake cakes and refreshments – a perfect thought to get you through the ride. This is a sponsored ride in aid of Alex’s Wish, a registered charity set-up to raise vital funds for an incurable childhood muscle wasting disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Alex’s Wish are investing in innovative medical breakthroughs to help all children lead a longer and more fulfilled life with the aim to finding a cure. All money that is raised through registration fees and sponsorship goes direct to this fantastic cause. The event organisers would also welcome volunteers to marshal and help out with refreshments on the day. If you are unable to ride but would like to help, please get in touch.

Alex’s Wish is a registered charity no: 1148845. For further information, please contact Emma Hallam – emma@alexswish.co.uk – 07903 349475

Last Orders Ladies and Gentleman!

Wildlife of Transylvania A talk by Jamie Gould Jamie is a naturalist and Park Ranger living in the Charnwood Forest area. His talk will explore the rich wildlife of the traditionally farmed landscape of the Tarnava Mare region in Romania.

Responsible drinking, surely that isn’t something which needs to be highlighted to the over 50’s? Well, did you know that those aged 45-64 are the most likely to drink, while those aged 16-24 are the least likely to drink? With more and more people drinking alcohol in the comfort of their own homes rather than going out to public houses, measures may be misjudged or units not accounted for. This is why Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland are pleased to be working in partnership with Turning Point to deliver the Last Orders Project.

Wednesday May 8th 2019 at 7.30pm

The Last Orders Project has now been presenting workshops to groups of people for over 2 years. The informal approach and fun props makes the topic light hearted yet educational. After all, who wouldn’t smile at their friends wearing beer goggles?! The aim of the session is always to highlight units and safe drinking. The quiz gives some surprising facts and statistics, sparking a variety of conversations. People reminisce about holidays or celebrations when they may have had that one drink too many!

Charnwood Forest Regional Park A talk by Julie Attard, Charnwood Development Manager, The National Forest Company Charnwood Forest is one of our country’s most significant landscapes, a priceless pocket of rich biodiversity, geological and archaeological heritage. This talk will highlight the latest research into this fascinating landscape and will also explain how a new £3.9 million Landscape Partnership project, currently in development, will help people to explore, understand and care for it.

There are often people present at the workshops who are or have been affected by alcohol at some point in their lives. At the end of each session there is information on display about support services for the individual who is affected as well as their loved ones. We are also able to have confidential discussions with people either over the telephone or through a face to face meeting in order to signpost towards the support which they need. If you are planning a health event or would like to arrange a Last Orders workshop for your group, please do not hesitate to contact Hollie Hughes on 07738820978 or email hollie.hughes@ageukleics.org.uk .
