Kirby Muxloe Bowls Club The Kirby Muxloe Bowls club have worked extremely hard to raise funds to help rebuild people’s lives in one of Nepal’s most devastated rural communities. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that initially struck Nepal, left rural hill and mountain communities completely cut off from aid that was slowly trickling in to this poverty stricken Himalayan kingdom. As the days went by and access to the villages again became possible the world began to realise that some villages had been completely wiped off the map. Khanikhola village, high on the hills only 50km from the earthquake epicentre was all but destroyed. The government has ordered that relief funds be sent to a centralised reserve; in a corruption riddled nation this may not benefit the people who truly need the most help to start their lives again. In 2013 two of the Bowls clubs good friends volunteered at a school in Khanikhola run by the incredible Vijay and Bina; a local couple trying to educate the villages poor children for free. This involved building a school house, feeding the children and of course educating them. Education is something that all Nepalese no matter how poor have got to pay for, so many go without. Our friends were deeply touched by their efforts and their time together. On returning to Leicester they started a grassroots fundraising platform called GIVE WITH SOUL. Its goal was to help raise money for existing worthwhile projects in poor rural communities. Fortunately for Khanikhola, after the earthquake wrecked the village, the school remained standing. It became the base for the village to start again and Vijay has begun making sure that his village can get what it needs to survive i.e food, shelter, building materials. Thanks to his efforts this is all happening months faster than it would have waiting for aid groups to arrive. To help Rushy Mead School raised £750 last week that our friends sent straight to Khanikhola Village! Kirby Muxloe Bowls club members and friends had a wonderful carvery and quiz followed by a raffle to also raise funds for Nepal. Victoria and Paul Magee recently returned from an eighteen month long trip, six of which were spent in Nepal. They experienced a warmth and kindness that had no equal from any of their other trips. In the poorest communities and harshest terrain they have ever seen, Nepal and its people are some of their fondest memories. Victoria and Paul know the country and how it works and believe if the aid money doesn’t get immediately get to these poor communities then it NEVER WILL. The wonderful event raised £400 which was sent via Western Union on the 16th May to Ajay of the Superb Catalyst Academy in Khanikhola which is the most effective way to get donations to those in need in the village. The Kirby Muxloe Bowls club would like to thank those people who gave so generously to raise the much needed funds. £400 = 63,000 Rupees. If you wish to support this cause please visit www.facebook.com/SuperbCatalystAcademy or www.facebook.com/GiveWithSoul You don’t need a Facebook account to visit these pages. Apologies for the incorrect day and date for the Bowls Club open day printed in our last edition, the fixture list from the Bowls club was incorrect. - Ed

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Ratby, Kirby Muxloe & Leicester Forest East areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction

that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Kirby Muxloe Players As I write this, the weather outside is gloomy, the wind is blowing a gale and it looks suspiciously like rain! A far cry from warm sunny days, walks in the park and barbecues on summer nights. And there it is, my reminder to you of the Player’s next production ‘Summer Nights’, the show that will set your feet tapping, your ribs tickling as we entertain with songs from those memorable musicals (our first half) and then up tempo numbers from the 60’s and 70’s (our second half) interspersed with sketches to set you laughing and take your mind of gloomy weather if our English summer has still not materialised. The box office is open 07804435235 or contact us at www.kirbyplayers.co.uk . The dates for your diary 29th July -1st August, the venue Kirby Muxloe Village Hall, Station Road, the time of performance 7.30pm. Have you ever wondered whether you could take part in a show? The Players are always looking for ‘new faces’. Have you ever wondered how those in the show get to take part? On Tuesday 14th July an audition will take place for The Players next production ‘The Rose Without a Thorn’. This play tells the story of Henry VIIIth and Katherine Howard and is a large cast. Even if you do not wish to take part, you might be interested in how a show comes together and we would be delighted to see you. Pay us a visit at the Village Hall, Kirby Muxloe 7.30pm, 14th July or if you want to know more, leave a message on our box office number 07804435235 and we’ll get back to you.

Blaby District Council Present LOROS with a Cheque for £2,106.08 On Wednesday, 13th May 2015, Fundraising Co-ordinator at LOROS, Magdalena Korytkowska was presented with a cheque for £2,106.08 from Blaby District Council. Councillor David Clements, Chairman of Blaby District Council, chose to support LOROS in 2014. During this yearly partnership Blaby District Council staff members put their hands on deck to raise vital funds for their local Hospice. From Blaby District Council Chairman’s Garden Party which was organised in July, quizzes and Coast-to-Coast Walk through to the Family Fun Day in the Pavilion, Blaby Bake Off in October and Christmas Concert in December – they really worked hard to secure money and make a difference to our local hospice. The fantastic amount donated is equivalent to the cost of a fully qualified, full time nurse to care for our terminally ill inpatients for three weeks. Magdalena Korytkowska said: “We were honoured to have been chosen by Blaby District Council as their Charity of the Year for 2014 and we wish them every success with their fundraising in the future. We would like to thank the Council staff members from the bottom of our hearts, on behalf of all of us at LOROS, our patients and their family members for this amazing support. This wonderful donation has made a fantastic difference to the care we provide to 2,500 terminally ill patients and their carers each year.” Jane Toman, Director of People at Blaby District Council, said: “LOROS is a charity that supports so many people throughout Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, and I’m so proud that our efforts throughout the year have raised over £2,000, which will go towards maintaining the valuable services of this excellent organisation.” If you would like to consider LOROS as Your Charity of the Year and/or find out more about benefits your company can expect in return please contact Magdalena Korytkowska, the LOROS Fundraising Department, on fundraising@loros.co.uk or 0116 231 8431/2

Verdon Jazz Club

The Fenny Stompers were the latest jazz band to perform at Newbold Verdon Jazz Club on May 8th. After a slightly delayed start, due to some of the band members being held up in traffic, they proceeded to give us a great evening of traditional jazz. Dennis Vick on clarinet, who founded the band in the 1970’s, was ably accompanied by Avo Avison on trombone and Dave Marchant on trumpet. The back line was Brian Vick on banjo, Andy Faulkner on bass and Ted Joiner on drums. They played very entertaining jazz and lots of favourites including Creole Love Song, Brian singing Higher Ground and a clarinet solo by Dennis playing a rousing version of Wild Cat Blues.

Millie Raises Nearly £1000 for ‘Little Princess Trust!! A Local Teenager from Kirby Muxloe organised a fantastic charity event by having 17cm cut from her hair on Friday 8th May.... Emilia Sterland has been growing and wearing her hair long for many years. However, she became inspired by the unique charity which needs people to donate at least 17cm of their clean healthy hair and so that it can be made into real hair wigs for poorly children. The event was held on behalf of “The Little Princess Trust” www.littleprincesses.org.uk a charity which was launched in 2006 by the parents of Hannah Tarplee, along with help from friends and from Hannah’s school, Hereford Cathedral Junior School. Hannah was the original Little Princess. Sadly she was diagnosed with having a Wilms tumour and after a brave battle, died in 2005. At that time, finding high quality wigs for children was very difficult and only after a long search was a suitable company eventually found which made a wig for Hannah. She very much enjoyed wearing her wig, particularly on special occasions. After Hannah passed away, so many kind people offered help, financial and practical. Hannah’s parents, Wendy and Simon decided that the most fitting way to use this help was to launch a charity dedicated to providing specialist real hair children’s wigs. Like so many Little Princesses, Hannah loved her hair and losing it was very traumatic. Since its inception, the charity has now helped thousands of boys and girls Emilia’s event includes many fund raising ideas and is being supported by her friends and family. As well as donating her own hair Emilia also needs to raise a minimum of £350 and so that her hair can be made into a wig and provided to one of the charities beneficiaries. Emilia’s hair has been posted directly to the Charities Head Quarters in Hove along with the funds raised and so that they can start the process of tuning the hair into a gift for a child which will make a real difference.. Emilia has set up a just giving website where people are being encouraged to visit and to donate whatever they can. The site address is

Victoria’s Bush Hog Tails. I live in Nottingham although the characters in my books are touching the hearts of so many people all over the place! I was on BBC radio Leicester earlier in the year with Ed Stagg and have got copies of my books in Japan, Australia, Kuwait and New Zealand! It makes me feel really proud and happy Victoria is very passionate and dedicated in trying to raise as much awareness as she can for animals. She has written and self illustrated a children's book and is hoping to help animals as much as she can. Along with helping animals she also really wants to encourage as many children as possible to enjoy reading. Victoria lives in Nottingham and it has always been her dream to write a book. Finally years later she achieved her dream and now a little creature is raising awareness for other real life animals. At the moment hedgehogs are on the decline so Victoria is trying to let people know about that as much as possible and how they can protect them in their gardens. Victoria says ‘All it takes to try to protect these animals is just a small gap in the fences of gardens so they can wander freely searching for food.’ From the sales of her books Victoria donates all profits to wildlife charities. ‘I have so far this year helped a hedgehog rescue by donating two copies of my books for the owners to auction. She raised just over £200 which enabled her to purchase a hedgehog X ray machine and important medication. And yesterday I handed over a cheque for £211 to Nuneaton and Warwickshire wildlife sanctuary.’ Victoria’s books are about a lovable new kind of creature called a Bush-hog who often gets mistaken for a hedgehog even though he looks nothing like one! He is smaller, has shiny metal spikes and unlike hedgehogs likes to sleep at night! With his friend Fluffy the cat he embarks on many adventures learning about new animals in a fun and exciting way. To find out more you can visit Victoria’s facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bush-hog-tails/563458233738596 Or you can purchase a book directly from ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ Bush-Hog-Tails-Bushys-Field-Adventure-By-Victoria-Harwood-Childrens-Book/261892605934?pt

Borough Councillors Report Cllr Ozzy O’Shea Tel 0116 2394336 or 07808585825 Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com

2015 Borough Council Election. Dear Residents, Now that all the recent election fever has subsided, we would like to take this opportunity to offer our heartfelt thanks to the whole community who came out to vote for us. We now have a clear mandate from you to carry on the hard work we have done together over the last eight years. Ozzy was returned with 2080 votes and Chris just slightly behind with 1942 votes and this gave us a clear majority of nearly 1300 it was a very humbling experience. Furthermore , the Conservative Group have now taken back control of Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, ousting the previous Lib/Dem Administration with a clear majority of 21 seats to their 12 and one remaining Labour seat. Chris has been given an Executive position on the Council being put in charge of housing including council house management & related services (homelessness, private sector housing) building repairs. He is also the chair of the community safety partnership. Now that we are back in control, we will use the first few weeks trying to understand the legacy and the size of the possible debt that we all have been left with by the outgoing administration. Two things are already clear, firstly that we will be totally transparent in informing all residents of where we are in terms of the legacy and secondly, future capital projects and funding will no longer be Hinckley centric, in that the Borough as a

whole will be considered. This is our pledge.

Thank you again. Fly Tipping. Ratby is being targeted by fly tipping especially along the Burroughs’s Road. Over the last 2 weeks, we have seen 5 different amounts tipped on this road. The first was household goods and thanks to our Parish Footpath Warden Ken Harris, a letter was discovered in some of the bags and the person identified will be asked to come in for an interview under caution. Well done Ken! More worryingly was the next two lots dumped near the ford which contained the remains of a cannabis factory. Several plants and silver paper were dumped there on two separate occasions. The last 2 were builder’s rubble and the remains of 4 dead horses. Whilst we work with our Officers to put measures in place to identify these people, we would ask all residents to be vigilant if they are up the Burroughs’s Road.

Falls Awareness Workshops. A series of free workshops are being held across the Borough for older residents at risk from falls. These workshops will be held during July/August and are intended for those who have had a fall or who have a health related condition including poor eyesight and hearing that can affect their balance. The workshops will provide information on free hearing and services, postural assessments, alarm services,

free Tai Chi classes, a reflexology taster and Co-op suitable slippers for sale. Locally, these will be held on Thursday 23rd July at Sport in Desford (10.00 - 12.00pm) and on Tuesday 4th August at Groby Village Hall (1.00pm - 3.00pm) Free tea and coffee and cakes are included and free transport will be provided for care homes and groups of 5 or more people. Pre-booking is essential. For father information call Emma Hopkins on 01455 255875.

Proms in the park- Holycroft Park, Hinckley. Saturday 13th June between 6pm and 9pm Enjoy a free music event with a program of music performed by local school orchestras and singers. A thoroughly enjoyable evening of entertainment, just take your own refreshments.

Music in the Mead Enjoy free music in the Bandstand on Saturday 20th June 2015, between 1pm and 3pm Argents Mead Hinckley. Once again, we would like to take this opportunity to thank residents for their continued support and remind you we are only an email or phone call away Regards

County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com Scams you should be aware of. Fraudsters often target ‘goods for sale’ adverts on popular online auctions sites, so watch out whenever you’re selling anything online.

Cities Devolution Bill Chancellor George Osborne has set out the new Governments plans to devolve sweeping powers and funding in his Cities Devolution Bill, in the Queens Speech. The Leader of the County Council commented “Whilst I welcome this, I do not want upper tier authorities to get left behind. County Councils 8 need to enjoy the same benefits of this legislation as intended for the cities. 8 To this end, I have written to the new Communities and Local Government Secretary Greg Clark MP, seeking an early meeting to discuss our plans for a Combined Authority with the City of Leicester. Mr Clark is aware from his previous visit of the excellent working relationships between the two authorities. I would expect any Combined Authority should have devolved powers and funding over such areas as transport, skills, job creation, strategic Planning and housing, policing and economic development.” The leader is also lobbying our Local MPs for their support in trying to achieve a fairer deal for Leicestershire.

The vehicles have been stolen at night, taken to remote, but local, locations and stripped of all valuable parts. LOCALPOLICING “I recently attended the ‘Have your Say’ event where the Chief Constable and the Police and Crime Commissioner met with people local to Hinckley and Bosworth. The event was very kindly hosted by Bosworth Hall Hotel, and Bill Cullen – strategic lead for Community Safety for Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council – joined the panel to broaden its reach and the information available to attendees. One of the most significant and frequently raised concerns was around how to contact local police officers. There was common understanding that in emergencies one should call 999, but in terms of reporting on-going issues to neighbourhood teams, it was clear that though we have tried to get the message across we have not necessarily been universally successful. To that end I do hope the following will help: My officers seek to be out and about on patrol to reassure communities and prevent ASB and crime from occurring. If you see an officer and want to raise an issue, or ask a question, you can stop them and have a conversation. If you have been the victim of ASB, or have had a crime committed against you, and there is no immediate risk to anyone or a suspect in the immediate area, then telephone 101 (which has replaced 0116 2222 222). Your report will be assessed and a way of addressing the matter will be determined with the case’s needs and your availability considered. If you represent local people and have an issue to report such as some ongoing ASB at a specific location, this can also be reported by telephoning 101. The report taken does not always have to be a live incident or a crime, and we have a facility to record the details on a case-management system which we share with our partners such as the council and fire service.

Nowadays a large number of people use the internet, and there is an easy way to email your ‘Dedicated Neighbourhood Team’ (the small team covering your area but under this Neighbourhood Policing Area) directly from our Force Website, https://leics.police.uk/ That email address can also be used without going through the website; it’s hinckleyandblaby.npa@leicestershire.pnn. police.uk . These emails get picked-up by the duty supervisor at the station and allocated to an officer on-duty and working on the right DNT. Doing it this way rather than from you to individual officers avoids them receiving an email when they are on Rest Days, or on training. Officers work in teams and regularly share work. We’re always looking to improve, so please let me know if you have any good ideas on how we could communicate better. One of our new approaches is to ensure we ‘close the loop’ by telling you what we have done so that you are reassured we’ve taken action about something that you reported. I must stress that we are in the main by nature ‘doers’ in policing and a lot of our work will be not clearly visible. We strive to be efficient, and therefore where we cannot justify work in a certain area with a clear policing purpose, we will not often be in that area. This was expressed by CC Simon Cole at this meeting, and certainly is a fact reflected in how and where we police. Rest assured that this frees us up so that if you really need us we will deploy and work hard in your area to make you and it safer.”

Inspector Dan Eveleigh Neighbourhood Policing Area Commander Hinckley and Blaby

Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation’s Sensory Walk The Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation, Markfield is delighted to announce the commencement of a new weekly sensory walk for people living with dementia and their carers. The Foundation, which provides support, care and friendship wellbeing services, will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The walks will be guided by a small team of the charity’s enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers and staff, who will lead the group on a gentle walk around some of the Foundation’s wonderful grounds and beautiful scenery. The weekly walk will also run in inclement weather, meeting indoors for the opportunity to benefit from memory boxes and social support. Our weekly walks will commence on Monday 1st June and will run every Monday (excluding Bank Holidays) from 2.00pm. Booking is essential, and prepayment of £3.00 per couple is required to secure your place. Although the walk is led, carers are required to be present. Alan Norman, Chief Executive, commented ‘Walking and experiencing the great outdoors has many health and wellbeing benefits, and we are delighted to offer this opportunity in the glorious grounds of Ulverscroft Grange’ he added ‘our volunteers have completed a walk leader training programme and are looking forward to welcoming you on this fantastic new sensory adventure’ For more information on the walk, or to book place, please contact Helen Baxter or 01530 244914 or email hello@shuttlewood-clarke.org
