Brookvale High School Welcomes Local Primary Schools
On Tuesday 10th February and Thursday 19th March 2015, Brookvale High School was delighted to throw open its doors and welcome pupils in years 5 and 6, who made the journey from the local primary schools, to take part in two mornings of activity. On Tuesday 10th February, the flour was a-flying as budding Chefs (along with a couple of daredevil Headteachers!!) took over our Food Technology room and, under the guidance of Ms Owen (Food Tech Teacher) created extremely tasty Pizza Wheels, in a ‘Primary Bake Off’! Thursday 19th March 2015 saw Brookvale playing host to future Scientists, as our annual Primary Science Morning got off to a ‘roaring’ start! Led by Mrs Pattison, Science Teacher, the children burnt food using Bunsen Burners, to determine which food types contained the most energy, and to find out how the body uses this energy by measuring their pulse rate using data loggers. It continues to be a great privilege to welcome primary school pupils to Brookvale, and it’s wonderful to see them again in Year 7, sporting their smart new Brookvale uniform! Enjoy the rest of this academic year, Year 6, and we look forward to seeing you all in September.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Ratby, Kirby Muxloe & Leicester Forest East areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction
that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Blaby District Council launches Dementia Action Alliance
Blaby District Council is launching the Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) at the Council’s offices on Tuesday 19 May 2015, between 1pm-3pm.
KIRBY KINGS
CROWNED CHAMPIONS Well done to Kirby Kings U12’s who have won the league title. The King’s wrapped up the title in front of their home fans with a game to spare. They had an impressive 100% home record and only lost once all season. They managed an amazing ratio of 81 goals scored and only conceding 18. Louis Adams, team captain said “The lads and I are over the moon with winning the league and I would like to thank all my team mates for the solid all round performances that have led to us winning the title”
The DAA is made up of a group of organisations who have joined together with the aim of making Blaby District a better place to live for people with dementia and their carers. Blaby District Council is celebrating the launch by inviting people along to find out how making just a few simple changes in a business or organisation can make a big difference to someone with dementia. At the event there will be advice about dementia support services and information for Blaby residents, businesses and community groups on how they can improve the quality of life for people living with dementia and their carers. Activities will also include Singing for the Brain, Books on Prescription and a Laughter Workshop. There will also be a chance to take part in a Dementia Friends Information Session. Blaby District has an increasing ageing population and it is expected that the number of people living with dementia locally is expected to almost double by 2030. Gill Collins, East Midlands Dementia Action Alliance Coordinator, said: “This event will help to showcase the advice and information available for residents regarding dementia.” “Dementia can severely affect the lives of people living with the illness, and those caring for people with it. We hope to raise the public’s awareness on what they can do to help anyone directly affected by dementia. What they can offer will be invaluable.” For more information about the launch and to confirm your attendance, please contact the Health and Leisure Team at Blaby District Council on 0116 272 7703 or e-mail leisure@blaby.gov.uk.
Kirby will be making the move to 11 a side next season and therefore are on the lookout for a couple more players to add to the solid team that they have worked so hard to put together so if your child is interested then please contact The Manager, Jamie on 07711320095.
Ratby’s Annual Show Saturday 8th August 2pm at Ratby Sports Club, Desford Lane. Show schedules are freely available from Ratby Post Office and the library, both of which are in Main Street. In the schedule you will find a variety of classes to enter including all the usual favourites of vegetables and fruit, a variety of floral and container plant sections and a flower arranging section which this year includes a class for a Ruby Wedding Anniversary arrangement using fresh flowers and foliage – full details can be found in the schedule. A challenge for young people to make a miniature garden using a standard seed tray is there again – what will they come up with this year? And don’t forget that in the YOUNG PEOPLE’S SECTION for photography, you may choose your own theme and you can enter two photos in this class. In the ADULTS SECTION for photography, you may enter two photos in each of two themes – SHAPES, and TOGETHERNESS. There are so many classes to enter, surely something for everyone. So get yourself a schedule, decide what you are going to enter, get busy, come along to our own Ratby Sports Club with your entry, join in the fun (we are not all experts), help to support a traditional village event, relax, and enjoy yourself!

Put best foot forward and WALK THIS MAY MORE than 60 organised strolls, ambles and rambles will take place across Leicestershire to celebrate National Walking Month. People are encouraged to ‘Walk this May’, get fit and enjoy the great outdoors. It is hoped the initiative will also encourage people to consider leaving their cars at home and walk instead, wherever possible. Pete Price, assistant director for transportation at Leicestershire County Council, said: “There are some fantastic walks to be experienced in Leicestershire’s countryside, parks and urban areas. “Walking is a great way to stay fit and active and there are opportunities to get out and about right on our doorsteps. “We hope people will embrace National Walking Month this May and enjoy the great outdoors.” Walks will take place in districts and boroughs across the county including: • A walk around the QE Diamond Jubilee Wood Circuit in Heather, North West Leicestershire, on Sunday, May 17th • A six- mile ramble around Market Bosworth on Saturday, May 23 • A loop around Hallaton and Medbourne on Sunday, May 31 • A walk around Long Clawson, Melton, on Sunday, May 31 A host of walks will also take place in North West Leicestershire, Hinckley and Bosworth and Charnwood as part of the National Forest Walking Festival. For a full list of all the organised walks taking place during Walking Month visit: www.choosehowyoumove.co.uk/events/category/ nationalwalking-month. Information on the whereabouts of rights of way in Leicestershire is available via an online map at: www.leics.gov.uk/pathsmap.htm
Wig Charity hair cut!! A Local Teenager from Kirby Muxloe has organised a fantastic charity event at which she will become the central attraction and by having 17cm cut from her hair.... Emilia Sterland has been growing and wearing her hair long for many years. However, she became inspired by the unique charity which needs people to donate at least 17cm of their clean healthy hair and so that it can be made into real hair wigs for poorly children. The event is being held on behalf of “The Little Princess Trust” www.littleprincesses.org.uk a charity which was launched in 2006 by the parents of Hannah Tarplee, along with help from friends and from Hannah’s school, Hereford Cathedral Junior School. Hannah was the original Little Princess. Sadly she was diagnosed with having a Wilms tumour and after a brave battle, died in 2005. At that time, finding high quality wigs for children was very difficult and only after a long search was a suitable company eventually found which made a wig for Hannah. She very much enjoyed wearing her wig, particularly on special occasions. After Hannah passed away, so many kind people offered help, financial and practical. Hannah’s parents, Wendy and Simon decided that the most fitting way to use this help was to launch a charity dedicated to providing specialist real hair children’s wigs. Like so many Little Princesses, Hannah loved her hair and losing it was very traumatic. Since its inception, the charity has now helped thousands of boys and girls Emilia’s event includes many fund raising ideas and is being supported by her friends and family. As well as donating her own hair Emilia also needs to raise a minimum of £350 and so that her hair can be made into a wig and provided to one of the charities beneficiaries. Once Emilia’s hair has been cut it will be posted directly to the Charities Head Quarters in Hove along with the funds raised and so that they can start the process of tuning the hair into a gift for a child which will make a real difference.. The hair cut event took place on Friday 8th May locally in Kirby Muxloe but unfortunately due to our publishing times we had to go to print before the event. However we will be giving you an update on the story next month so please dig deep and donate to this fantastic cause using the details below. Emilia has set up a just giving website where people are being encouraged to visit and to donate whatever they can. The site address is

Do you want to be this way forever? It’s time to grow up.” My wife hasn’t asked me to do anything since.
FILMREVIEW Avengers: Age of Ultron
In the aftermath of the untimely demise of S.H.I.E.L.D, Tony Stark and the rest of the Avengers must find a way to protect the earth, attempting yet another peacekeeping program, this time with an advanced artificial intelligence superpower named Ultron. The deal quickly turns sour however, when Ultron decides that human beings are the cause of Earth’s problems, before setting out on a mission to wipe them out. A global battle ensues with Captain America, Thor, Hulk, The Black Widow and Iron Man fighting for humanity in their most epic battle to date. Marvel fans are in for a treat over the next few years, with a string of hotly anticipated releases in the works. Avengers: Age of Ultron marks the second thrilling chapter in the franchise and sees the welcome return of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Dr. Bruce Banner/Hulk, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America and Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow. The Avengers (2012) opened to glowing reviews and took a staggering $1.5 billion in global ticket sales – making it the third biggest grosser of all time and Marvel’s most successful picture to date.
Spooks: The Greater Good Four years after the final series, the hit TV series Spooks has been developed into a thrilling feature-length drama, with Peter Firth returning to the role of Harry Pearce. Harry‘s security is compromised after a known terrorist escapes from the clutches of MI5. London is also under threat of attack, and the team must search for Harry as they attempt to protect the city. Left without his mentor, young recruit Will Crombie is forced to learn fast as he hunts down Harry’s abductors. In the process, he ends up discovering a web of terrorist intrigue that leads him into very dangerous territory. MI5’s powers are hugely tested as the threat to London creeps ever closer – can they protect the capital and rescue Harry?

After our visit to Tesco at Beaumont Leys, we set up our own bakery in the classroom. First we mixed a very sticky dough, so we needed to sprinkle lots of flour on it before we could form it into bread, rolls and cakes. Gardening Club We have all been very busy and hard at work this half-term in the gardening club! Some exciting news‌we have planted potatoes, carrots, bean and radishes in the planters which are on the top field. We are taking care of these by getting rid of any weeds and making sure all the seeds have had plenty of water to drink now that the warmer weather is on the way! They have a lot of growing to still do but keep an eye out for how they are getting on! You might also see some sunflowers emerging – spot which one will grow the tallest! Also, thank you very much to the PSA for your donation to gardening club, this money will go towards new equipment and will be used for some beautiful looking plants that we are hoping to put in the planters on the front playground very soon. We hope that these will provide lovely scents, colour and brightness ready for everyone to enjoy this Summer!

Borough Councillors Report Cllr Ozzy O’Shea Tel 0116 2394336 or 07808585825 Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com
Thank you. It has been a pleasure and an Honour to represent residents as your Borough Councillors. We would both like to thank residents for putting their confidence and trust in us again to represent you. New Dog Regulations From April 2016 Dog owners are being reminded that their pets must be micro chipped by 6th April next year (2016), or they run the risk of a £500 fine. A microchip is a small electronic device, which is the size of a grain of rice. No anaesthetic is required and the procedure should cause no more discomfort than a standard vaccination. Each microchip has a unique identification number, which is registered to the dog and the owner's details are placed on a national database. This number can then be read when a scanner is passed over the chip, enabling the Dog Warden to search the national database to find the owner's details.
Cllr Chris Boothby Tel 0116 2388301 or 07880 711 222 Email chris.boothby@hotmail.com
The owner can then be contacted and reunited with their dog. It is important, though, to ensure that owner’s details are kept up-todate at all times. The Dog Warden Service is responsible for collecting stray dogs throughout the Borough and also investigating dog-related complaints such as barking dogs and some dangerous dogs. In 2014/15 there was a 32% increase in complaints regarding dangerous dogs. Most dog owners are very responsible but they are reminded that their pets should be kept under control at all times especially when in a public place. The Anti-social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014 introduced new powers that can be used to deal with dogs that are not being kept under control. This can result in a notice being served and if the notice is not complied with a fixed penalty of £100 can be issued. If anyone would like to discuss the micro chipping service or the Dog Warden Service in general they can do so by contacting 01455 255946.
Dog Fouling We have had numerous complaints that some irresponsible dog owners are not picking up their dogs mess. Please ensure that you clean up after your dog it does not matter if your dog fouls on the grass or on the footpath where ever your dog fouls it needs clearing up. There is also a real problem with dog fouling on the newly resurfaced Ivanhoe trail. You can put your dog mess in any of the provided dog bins or litter bins within the village. To the majority of dog owners we say thank you. Once again, we would like to take this opportunity to thank residents for their continued support and remind you, we are only an email or phone call away. We pride ourselves on getting straight back to residents Regards
Chris & Ozzy. Working for you.

But now our thoughts are turning to warmer weather, of sunlit days and summer nights. Yes that’s the title of our next production, ‘Summer Nights’.

Hormone that proves you really do love your dog like a member of the family IF YOU HAVE ever gazed into your beloved dog’s eyes and felt that you found love there, you were right. Now a hormone has been found that indicates that we love our pets in the same way as we love our children – and the feeling is mutual: our pets love us back in the same way. Researchers have found that the levels of the hormone oxytocin increase in both human and canine brains when a dog is gazing at its owner. Oxytocin is already known to play a strong part in triggering that feeling of unconditional love and protection that a parent and child enjoy. Scientists believe that oxytocin may create a ‘neural feedback loop’ that has strengthened the bond between humans and dog for centuries. “They became attuned to our social cues in the way that young children are.… When dogs are presented with an impossible task they quickly turn to humans to see what to do, just like children do. Wolves don’t do that, even when raised in captivity.” The study was published in the journal Science.

Ivanhoe Trail. I am pleased to report that the final section between Taverner Drive and the M1 Bridge has now been resurfaced. This final section has now completed the improved foot and cycle path to Glenfield in time for summer.
Inconsiderate Parking. I know that I keep going on about this, but residents contact me complaining of inconsiderate parking on Grassed areas and on Grass verges. I appreciate that parking in certain areas is at a premium, but the open grassed areas and grass verges were not provided with the intention of having vehicles parked on them. Now that the Parish Council has taken on the grass cutting contract from the County Council, a pride has been put back into villages grass cutting by the Parish Council. However the contractors are struggling at times to cut the grass around parked vehicles and when they do it leaves a patch of uncut grass which looks untidy. I would politely ask that residents refrain from parking on grassed areas. Thank you in anticipation.
Please be aware of the following Scams
• Remember iTunes will not request your personal details via email or through attached links • If you have filled in one of the forms, do not use online banking until you have had your computer checked out by an expert. Also consider contacting your bank to make them aware of the situation – money held in your account may be at risk. Scam No 2 Online auction websites are being used by fraudsters to advertise vehicles for sale which do not exist. The fraudster advertises on an auction website and gets their victim to agree to purchase a vehicle, making sure that all correspondence is done via email. The victim then receive emails which claim to be from genuine payment merchants or auction websites which state that the money they have paid for the vehicle will be held in an ‘escrow account’. The email indicates the money will be released to the seller, once the person has confirmed that they’re happy with the purchase. The email says that this will provide the person with ‘buyer protection’. In reality these emails are fraudulent, they don’t come from the named companies and the bank accounts are controlled by fraudsters.
Action Fraud and the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) have been made aware that there are currently a number of emails being sent out that appear to be coming from Apple iTunes, detailing a recent purchase.
Protect yourself:
The email states that if customers did not purchase the item they should click on the link provided to obtain a refund. Once redirected to a web page they are asked to fill out their card and other personal details. This is a spam email with links to a malicious web page that is being used to harvest personal details, possibly in order to access victim’s bank accounts.
• Meet the seller ‘face to face’ and view the vehicle before parting with any money.
Protect yourself: • Double check where the email has come from before clicking on the link
• Always stay within the terms and conditions of the auction websites. • Remember that PayPal do not include vehicles under their buyer protection.
• Be vigilant of emails that purport to be from genuine companies and check the ‘domain’ name of the email address for any inconsistencies. • Check feedback online by searching the associated phone numbers or email addresses of the seller. • If the vehicle is below market value consider whether this is an opportunity which is too good to be true!
Scam No 3 Leicestershire Police is issuing a warning to the public to be on their guard over a courier fraud scam. Officers have received eleven reports since January 2015 where victims have received a telephone call from someone claiming to be a police officer or somone from their bank claiming that the victim’s bank account has been fraudulently accessed and that someone has been arrested for the offence. There are many variations of the courier scam, but it usually follows this method: A fraudster will cold call you on a landline, claiming to be from your bank or the police. They state their systems have spotted a fraudulent payment on your card or it is due to expire and needs to be replaced. In order to reassure you that they are genuine, they suggest that you hang up and ring the bank/police back straight away. However, they don’t disconnect the call from the landline so that when you dial the real phone number, you are actually still speaking to the fraudster. They then ask you to read out your PIN or type it on your phone keypad. They may ask for details of other accounts you hold with the bank or financial service provider. Finally, they send a courier or taxi to you to collect your bank card. The fraudster will have then obtained your name, address, full bank details, card and PIN. These fraudsters sound very plausible and are skilled at tricking people into handing over their cards. Please let any elderly or vulnerable family members, friends, or neighbours know about the scam. Remember, your bank will never attend your home; and neither the bank nor the police will ever collect your bank card or ask for your PIN. If you have been a victim or have any information in relation to this scam, call Leicestershire Police on 101. Victims can also contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 for more information. I would like to thank you all for your continued support and to remind you that I am only a phone call or email away.

Brookvale High School Celebrating Cross Country Success! It has been many years since Brookvale High School has seen the success in Cross Country running that we have experienced this season. The year 7 boys and girls have swept the board in all events, both as a team and individually, while the junior (year 8 & 9) boys have been runners up in two of the events. Year 7 girls won the league, winning 4 out of the 5 races. On an individual note, two of our year 7 students, Rachel Nealon and Hollie Gamble, had a battle royal for 1st place! Between them they won all the races, with Rachel winning 3 to take 1st place, and Hollie winning 2 to take 2nd. In the relay championships, the girls not only won but beat a select team of club runners! At the school County Championships, they again swept the board winning the team event, with Hollie coming 1st and Rachel 2nd. In all, 7 girls competed during the season. Year 7 boys had similar success and put out enough runners to have a ‘B’ team in the league and relays. Lucca Watson-Quilter won all 5 league races, with his brother Roman in 2nd each time to finish 1st and 2nd individually. The team also won all 5 races to take 1st place, with the ‘B’ team finishing just outside the medals in a very creditable 4th. At the relays our two teams finished 1st and 13th. Finally at the schools County Championships, Lucca and Roman were again 1st and 2nd individually, with the team coming 1st. In all, 10 boys competed during the season. The junior boys had to contend with an exceptional Loughborough Grammar School team, but through their perseverance were runners up in both the league and the school County Championships. Individually, Chris Nealon was 8th in the league and George Robinson 11th. At the Championships, they were also our best placed individual runners in 9th and 15th respectively. In all, 6 boys competed for the school. Whilst we wish the year 9 boys that ran in the junior races success in the future at Groby College, we do hope for more success with year 7 when they make the big step up to the junior races next year. Well done to all involved.
Andrew Stean, Head of PE, Brookvale High School

Appeal for help from Bradgate Drama Society Dear Friends The Bradgate Drama Society has been treading the boards in Newtown Linford for some 60 years now and has delighted audiences young and old over the years. We are lucky enough to have great facilities including a great sound and lighting system and the facility to rehearse on stage which is always a bonus. We are also able to provide a bar on performance nights which add to the night out. Sadly even with all this in our favour we have reached a point whereby we are having to take a long hard look at how we are able to carry on. We have a diminishing membership and are finding it very hard to recruit new members, and none of us are getting any younger. Our audiences have also diminished over the last few years and from selling out over three nights we have had to reduce our performances to just two nights. All of this is having an effect on the type of productions we are able to produce. We have gone from having auditions to just seeing who is available and finding a play to fit. Without an injection of new members I feel that it won’t be long before we bring the final curtain down on the group. As Chairman of the society I do not wish to preside over the demise of the group, so if you are willing to join our group we would love to see you and don’t feel that you have be on the stage we need plenty of help behind the scenes as well. I realise that this may not be for everyone so if it’s not for you then why not lend your support by coming to see our productions. I am sure you would have a very enjoyable evening. If on reading this you think you may want join us then please contact myself via email bradgatedrama@gmail.com or if you don’t have email contact Toby Manning on 01530 245298 or Lesley Baker on 01509 890771. With a little more help and support we can together keep this group going to entertain people for many more years to come. As the saying goes “use or lose it” !
Andreas Hastie - Chairman, Bradgate Drama Society.
