Dog Fouling

shire running to Melton, Lutterworth, and Rugby even jogging back from Oakham after watching his son play football. Some days running 52 miles, and all for a good cause. So far Loz has raised a fantastic £1001 for the Mayors charities.

We continually receive complaints of dog fouling in the village. Please can we remind the small minority of irresponsible dog owners that it is your duty and responsibility to pick up after your dog and put it in a bin? There are sufficient dog bins and litter bins around the village for owners to use. The Ivanhoe trail is a particular problem with owners letting their dogs foul on the grass verges either side thinking its ok to leave it there. We have received complaints about the constant fouling at the bus stop on Ferndale Drive. We have asked the Borough Councils enforcement officer to come out to Ratby to help tackle this issue. We are also looking at the possibility of using the council’s mobile CCTV cameras.

Brookvale Groby Learning Campus County Cup Finals Winners! On Friday 16th March Brookvale Groby Learning Campus Year 8 and Year 11 football teams experienced County Cup success as they completed a famous double for the campus!

The Year 8 football team retained their County Cup title with a 2-0 victory over St Paul’s in a closely fought encounter. Goals from Frankie Richardson and a Kyle McAdam penalty late on ensured the County Cup remained on the campus for another year. Our Year 11 footballers were also involved in a tight affair against Belvoir High School. An Olly Mullings strike, mid-way through the first half saw the boys home but not after some resolute defending ensured the score remained 1-0, as the team were rewarded for their hard work throughout this year with some silverware. Well done to all involved, a brilliant achievement!

The Kirby Muxloe Players All over the country we suspect, people are thinking about how they can commemorate those who fought so bravely in a war 100 years ago. The Kirby Players are no exception and have been planning their tribute for some time. Fiona, my daughter and myself Chris Ball, discovered that we knew nothing of this war and so started on a journey of research that has both shocked but also uplifted us when we have read of courage and comradeship. So now we take to the stage as people of a village, anywhere in England, who want to tell the story of ‘The war to end all wars’. In dialogue and poetry and projection of scenes from that time but mostly in song, we pay our tribute to all those who took part. We sing the songs that were sung at home and those of the soldiers, who were far away from home, we return briefly to Music Hall which was used to help recruitment. Our stage is painted red, white and blue, our flags and posters are waiting to be set and in the hall our display of personal items from some of our members is waiting to be seen. So take a seat at the table, enjoy a drink from the bar and join with us in song as we remember that They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted; They fell with their faces to the foe. ‘When the Lights Go On Again’ April 25th – April 28th, 7.30pm at Kirby Muxloe Village Hall Tickets 07804 435 235

Response to Parish Precept Statement 2018-19 We read this article with great interest as we seem to have had endless conversations with other concerned residents of Kirby Muxloe about the substantial amounts of money seemingly being wasted on both Freedom of Information requests and Objections to the Accounts which appear to originate from the same 3 or 4 residents. There has apparently been no way to prevent these people from continuing this wasteful activity. It seems that these requests, although entirely democratic, are meant to purely irritate, annoy and frustrate the workings of the Parish Council. Nobody seems to know exactly why they have done it, or how to make them stop. It cannot be right that a few residents are able, for whatever reason, to pursue this course of action, wasting the parish council's time and money. Apparently challenging these residents legally would have cost the council even more money and so it was not considered further. When we saw how much this had actually cost the Parish Council, we were astonished, £100,000, yes, £100,000!! This money could and should have been spent on improving services and facilities in the village. This article has rightly informed us of these underhand activities and hopefully now that all requests are going to be tested for vexacious character the costs can be reduced if not stopped. Unfortunately it appears that it would be breaking the law to name and shame the residents who have done this, and they are able to remain anonymous, but in our opinion this should have been done long ago. However, they should be aware that their identity is generally known, and that they should be ashamed of themselves. We have written this response purely to show support for the Parish Council and the dedicated work of its members.

LFE Film Evenings

FAST APPROACHING… The fourth RATBY YARD SALES

LFE Film Evenings on Thursday 3 May 2018 will feature “Goodbye Christopher Robin”

There is still time to register your address to hold a ‘Yard Sale’ and sell your unwanted treasures from the comfort of your own drive, path or garden on spring bank holiday MONDAY 7th MAY 2018 between 10am and 3pm. If you live anywhere in Ratby you can register on the live map at http://yardsale.ratbychurch.org.uk/ or by phoning 0116 239 4917.

If you would like to spend your bank holiday wandering around Ratby village in search of a treasure or a bargain you can follow the map on the website or call in at St Philip and St James Church LE6 0JF where you can collect a printed map. Warm and cold drinks and homemade cakes will also be being served in Church, again between 10am-3pm, in aid of Church funds.

 A behind-the-scenes  look into the relationship between beloved children's author A. A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin, whose toys inspired the magical world of Winnie the Pooh. Along with his mother Daphne, and his nanny Olive, Christopher Robin and  his family are swept up in the international success of the books; the enchanting tales bringing hope and comfort to England after the First World War.

There is no charge to take part in this event; we warmly welcome people from within the village to set up stalls and people from surrounding villages to visit the event. The Church’s Eco-Team who are organising proceedings simply want people in the village to avoid putting things in to landfill by finding new homes for their unwanted  goods.

But with the eyes of the world on Christopher Robin, what will the cost be to the family?

KIRBY MUXLOE LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY HUB We hope all our readers had a Very Happy Easter. Let’s hope for some better weather. We are very fed up with cold, rain and snow and are finding it hard to wait to get cracking on the gardens. Activities are building up in the Library apace, and we are making progress in developing the community side of our work, which we want to build to a much higher profile. Our volunteers are brilliant – we have not to date had a single Library session cancelled. They also help out behind the scenes, with gardening, cooking and maintenance work. Many people have commented on the lovely atmosphere we have managed to generate at the Library, where all are welcome and children abound – just what a Library and Community Hub should be! If you have a little time on your hands and would like to join us as a volunteer, please do. You will meet with a friendly, cheerful and welcoming group of people, with the added bonus of feeling that you are making a real contribution towards village life. Just pop in and talk to any one of us. Increasingly successful are our Coffee Mornings, held on the Fourth Saturday of each month. As our reputation grows, we are getting increasing numbers of people buying coffee and homemade cakes and socialising with friends. A new development on these mornings is craft activities for children, which is growing in popularity and inventiveness. Children of all ages are more than welcome.

As well as jigsaws to construct, we are now offering board and other games for people to play – cribbage, dominoes, cards, scrabble and so on. These are available at all times, so if you want to while away the time with friends, warmth, welcoming volunteers and a cup of tea/coffee, just drop in. Three big events coming up – a Radio Leicester recording of their Down to Earth programme, a big Spring Book Sale, and an Afternoon Drop-in session focussed on Dementia Awareness – see below. All tickets for Down to Earth have now been taken, but there are always cancellations for various reasons. If you would really like to come, drop in to the Library and see if we are able to accommodate you. Canapés and drinks will be available at £4.00 per head.

will be available for those who need it. We look forward to welcoming you at any or all of these events.

Ratby Churches Together

Annual Bluebell Walk in Martinshaw Woods

(Parish Church & Methodist Church)

Come and join the 4th annual Bluebell Walk in Martinshaw Woods Ratby on Sunday May 13th at 11 am. Car parking available at Markfield Road, Ratby LE6 0LS

Christian Aid Week 13th to19 May.

Besides admiring the bluebells you will be helping to raise money for Canine Partners, a charity which trains dogs to assist people with various physical disabilities. The dogs help people in many ways, for instance by opening and closing doors. retrieving dropped items, unloading washing machines, taking card and cash from ATM machines and other everyday tasks.

Ratby Churches together are once again preparing for Christian Aid week Traditionally Ratby people have always given generously to our house to house envelope giving scheme, however this year we are going to try a different method and we do hope that you will support this very important week.

The charity receives no government funding, and relies on donations, so the money raised will help create more canine partnerships, transforming the lives of people with disabilities including wounded servicemen and women, The cost is £4 for adults, £2 for children or £10 for a family ticket. There will also be the opportunity to take part in a raffle, children’s quiz or buy some goodies from the canine partner merchandise table. A toilet is provided. Two walks are planned, one about 3 miles, (shortcuts are available) and another shorter walk suitable for wheelchairs & pushchairs. Dogs are welcome on leads.

Kirby Muxloe Local Fundraising Committee for Cancer Research is a small group of volunteers who work together devising and arranging a variety of events in order to raise funds for the vital work undertaken by Cancer Research UK. Our most recent event held earlier in March was a meal at the Chef & Spice Restaurant, which raised over £1400. Over the past twelve months we have held a musical evening, Spring and Christmas Fayres and a supper at Kirby Muxloe Golf Club. Our events are generally well supported and in 2017 we raised almost £6000 for Cancer Research. Our next event will be the Spring Fayre, 5th May 2018 (10.30 am – 12.30 pm) in the Village Hall, Station Road, Kirby Muxloe. Hope you can come along and support us. If you think you would be interested in taking part in this fantastic charity & would like to volunteer your help & time – either joining the committee or being one of our very willing helpers – then please contact Patricia Wollen (Secretary) on 0116 2392239. We very much look forward to hearing from you.

occupants of the large houses on Kirby Fields. Even earlier, in the nineteenth century, teas were served on the lawns of the Old White House. In the 1920’s and 30’s, the Boden family in Faith Cottage, who were covered in the December issue, were also known to serve teas in the garden, as well as keeping a small shop selling provisions. Nowadays, these services are provided by the Castle Farmhouse, the Royal Oak and the Delicatessen. Between 1922 and 1932, Elizabeth Chesterton ran a small grocery and provisions shop, firstly at number 36, Main Street and then at number 39, just across the road. In 1932, Robert Henson, who was living at ‘Dallington’, Number 18, Main Street, was trading as a draper, but was more of a travelling salesman than a shopkeeper. Although not listed in the Trade Directories, we know that Thomas Hardy ran a dairy at number 10, Main Street. We are told by an advertisement that he sold “sterilized, pasteurised, Tuberculin tested milk”. Also “Channel Island milk, eggs and cream”. The actual timing of this is rather hazy, but we know that later on, during World War II, Hardy’s Dairy was to be found on Church Road. In the days of severe rationing, it is well remembered as selling ‘illegal’ ice cream, which everyone recalls as being wonderful. Mrs Hardy has a place in many peoples’ memories, as a lady with rosy red

cheeks and a sparkling white apron. In the 1920’s, Herbert and Alice Clarke ran a greengrocery shop and fruiterers at 30, Main Street, next to Battens. Mr Clarke also had a shop at Wigston. Initially he had a horse and cart, but later, in the 1930’s, he upgraded to a lorry. Before WWII, his son, Ken, worked in the shop and also grew vegetables to sell. When war broke out, he left employment at the shop and went to work at Desford Aerodrome, repairing aircraft, which was a reserved occupation. The Clarke’s shop closed during WWII as most people were growing their own vegetables and so there was no need for a greengrocer. After the war, Herbert Clarke reopened the shop for a short time, but then died in 1952. His wife Alice, together with his granddaughter Sheila, continued running the shop for a time, but then sadly they made the decision to close. Vines Electrical took over the building soon afterwards. Next month - a look at Enterprise House and other later shops and businesses on Main Street.

In this series of articles, we take a stroll down Main Street, Kirby Muxloe, and a walk into the past. Each article will feature a shop or business on Main Street. Do you remember it or know anyone who might? If there is anything else about this, or any other business on Main Street, that you can tell us, please email us at info@kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org or telephone Judith on 0116 2393767 or Mike on 0116 2386026. The Best of the Rest - a final look at the shops and businesses on Main Street - long ago. Although most of the best remembered shops and businesses on Main Street have been covered in the issues of this magazine during the last year, there are still some left that should be mentioned. Looking back to the earlier part of the last century, generally shops were much smaller, some just in the front room of a small house. In the 1920’s, we still find ‘tea rooms’, often catering for visitors to the Castle. Mrs Jane Gibson ran one from her thatched cottage on Main Street. It is said that the thatch hung so far over the road that passing lorries or buses often caught it as they passed by, taking an amount of straw thatch with them. Mrs Gibson also catered for parties, most likely for the

County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com 2017 approved the draft Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) Carers Strategy 2018 – 2021 for consultation.

CONSULTATION ON THE DRAFT LEICESTER, LEICESTERSHIRE AND RUTLAND CARERS STRATEGY 2018-2021 A local Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Carers Strategy across Health and Social Care has been in place since 2012 and a refreshed action plan for Leicestershire was developed in 2015, pending development of the National strategy. As part of the development of the new National? Strategy, the Department of Health asked carers, and organisations who work with carers, to input into a call for evidence. This closed on 31st July 2016 but as yet there is no date set for the publication of the National strategy. In the absence of a National Strategy, the LLR partners agreed to forge ahead and develop a local strategy. The Strategy sets out the draft strategic priorities relating to unpaid carers of all ages. It is intended as a Joint Strategy including all Local Authorities and Clinical Commissioning Groups across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. A significant amount of carer and stakeholder engagement was undertaken during the summer of 2017 and the Strategy has been co-produced alongside carers. The Strategy will explore how carers across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland can be identified early on, valued in their caring role, and supported to continue caring whilst maintaining their own health and wellbeing. The Cabinet at its meeting on 10th October

People will have a chance to have their say, at public and provider meetings, or by email. We will also be encouraging feedback from current users of carers’ services via the commissioned provider. You can take part in the consultation at the following address it runs until 22nd April 2018: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/carers-strategy

Reminder Notice of a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order

a ‘Telephone Preference Service’ - an enhanced call-barring service, which includes barring international call centres. The fraudsters ask victims to confirm/provide their bank account details, informing them that there is a one-off charge for the service. Victims instead see monthly debits deducted from their accounts, which they have not authorised. The fraudsters often target elderly victims. In all instances, direct debits are set up without following proper procedure. The victim is not sent written confirmation of the direct debit instruction, which is supposed to be sent within three days.

A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) is to be made for the following location: Martinshaw Lane, Groby The purpose of the TTRO is to facilitate connection to existing drainage.

On occasions when victims attempted to call back, the telephone number provided by the fraudster was either unable to be reached or the victim’s direct debit cancellation request was refused.

TTRO will incorporate a temporary road closure. The duration of the TTRO is for a period not exceeding 2 months commencing on the 09/04/2018. The actual duration of the restriction is not anticipated to exceed a period of 5 days within the aforementioned duration.

During 2017, there were 493 Action Fraud Reports relating to this fraud.

Diversion will operate via Ratby Road, Stephenson Way, Lawnwood Road, and Woodbank Road then back onto Ratby Road.

False claims of Telephone Preference Service: I particularly wish to bring this to resident’s attention as I have recently dealt with 2 reports from residents locally who have been targeted in this way. Fraudsters are cold-calling victims, falsely stating that they are calling from one of the well-known UK telecommunication service providers. They call victims claiming to provide

Protect yourself: There is only one Telephone Preference Service (TPS). The TPS is the only official UK 'donot-call' register for opting out of live telesales calls. It is FREE to sign-up to the register. TPS never charge for registration. You can register for this service at http://www.tpsonline.org.uk You will receive postal confirmation of genuine direct debits. If you notice unauthorised payments leaving your account, you should contact your bank promptly. Always be wary of providing personal information, or confirming that personal information the caller already claims to hold is correct. Always be certain that you know who you talking to. If in doubt hang up immediately. BT sell phones with call blockers which allow you to screen and block calls and you do not have to be a BT subscriber to purchase or use

these phones. You can also buy these type of phones through department stores. They do work I can assure you as we have one. I am always willing and available to give advice. I have worked with Trading Standards directly on these issues. Be aware of scams involving iTunes Gift Cards I dealt with a similar scam a couple of weeks ago. Where the occupants were told they had been awarded ÂŁ2500 PPI payment and all they needed was to pay 5% ÂŁ125 in iTunes cards a cheque would be delivered by a solicitor that day. The caller advised the occupants the nearest shop to purchase the iTunes card from was the Co-Op in Ratby. Luckily I had dealt with these victims before and they told the caller is was a scam they contacted me immediately. I went straight around to their property but no one showed up. Leicestershire Police have put out the following scam warning. We are seeing a notable increase in reports of fraud, locally and nationally, of frauds where people are being conned into making payments over the phone for things such as outstanding taxes, debt collection, and utility bills (predominantly mentioning HMRC and tax owed). Sadly last week, one local elderly victim lost ÂŁ3,600 to this con. Regardless of the reason for payment, the fraud follows a particular formula: The victim (often elderly) receives a call instilling panic

and urgency – caller will often claim there is a warrant for arrest unless the debt is settled that day. Victims are frightened in to making a payment by purchasing iTunes Gift Cards from the nearest retailer, being advised that iTunes Cards are a recognised, safe and accepted method of payment over the telephone.  After the cards have been purchased, the victim is asked to pay by sharing the 16-digit code on the back of the card with the caller over the phone.

Brookvale Groby Learning Campus Year 12 student Evie Dunn, has just won the Bardi Young Musician of the year competition!

It's vitally important that we get the message out, particularly to elderly vulnerable persons, that iTunes Gift Cards can be used ONLY to purchase goods and services on the iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, or for an Apple Music membership. If you're approached to use the cards for payment outside of the iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, or Apple Music, IT IS A FRAUD, and should immediately report it to Action Fraud. Finally I would like to thank you all for your continued support and remind you that should you need my help or advice, I always pride myself on making myself available to residents. Remember I am only a phone call or email away.

Ozzy O’shea. Always Working for you

This is a prestigious solo competition which means she will be playing a concerto (big solo) with the Bardi Symphony Orchestra in July!

District’s Challengers wanted for Charity active resident Link’s Leicestershire 3 Peaks event numbers on the up The District of Blaby is the most improved area in Leicestershire for active residents according to a Sport England report. Measuring people aged over 16 years old to see how active they are, Sport England’s Active Lives report revealed that 62.9% of Blaby District residents were considered “active,” undertaking over 150 minutes of exercise per week between November 2016 and November 2017. The results show that the district has seen the biggest increase of active residents in the county, up 4.5% from the previous year. Teresa Neal, Group Manager for Regulatory and Leisure Services, said: “We’re absolutely delighted with the findings of this report. We’ve worked hard to ensure access is available for people of all ages and abilities to become active. “The report places us in the top 15% of local authorities for active residents across the country, and highlights both the success of our leisure services team and our residents, whose enthusiasm and participation in physical activity is increasing.” Blaby District Council’s Sport and Physical Activity team provide a wide range of opportunities for residents to get more active, including Falls Prevention programmes, an Exercise Referral Scheme, family activities and a mobile skate park. For more information on activities in your local area or ideas of how to become more active, please contact the team on 0116 272 7703, email on leisure@blaby.gov.uk or find out more on www.sportblaby.org.uk.

LEICESTER BASED charity, Charity Link, is looking for people to take on its annual Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge in September to help improve the lives of local families living in hardship.

Launched in 2016, Charity Link’s Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge is a unique 16 mile route which beings and ends at Bradgate Park and takes in the peaks of Beacon Hill, Bardon Hill (Leicestershire’s highest point) and Old John Tower in Bradgate itself. The target time for challengers to complete the challenge is seven hours. Challengers can also choose to run the route which includes some of the county’s most beautiful – and physically challenging countryside, including Broombriggs Farm Country Park and Billa Barra Hill Nature Reserve. Taking place on Sunday 23rd September 2018, Charity Link hopes that this year’s challenge will beat the fantastic sum of £6,000 raised last year after 60 challengers took part in the challenge. Charity Link works throughout Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland and Northamptonshire to support individuals and families facing hardship and crisis. The charity provides essential items, including beds, cookers and clothing to help improve quality of life and to enable people to fulfil their potential, no matter what crisis, illness, disability or difficulty they may be facing. Due to the unique way it works, for every £10 donated to the charity it can raise £50 from Charitable Trusts around the UK. This means that every challenger raising £100 in sponsorship will actually help to provide £500 worth of essential items to local people in need. To find out more about the challenge or to register visit www.charitylink.org/leics3peaks or call 0116 222 2200. Charity Link would also be delighted to hear from local businesses interested in supporting the event, with Bawdon Lodge Farm in Nanpanton once again offering challengers a welcome coffee stop en-route and Charnwood Accountants sponsoring challenger medals Come along to Leicester Forest East Parish Hall, Kings Drive, LFE, Leicester LE3 3JE on Saturday 28 April 201

Price cut to halt fly tipping in Hinckley and Bosworth CHARGES for the removal of large items in the Hinckley and Bosworth area are being reduced from 1 April 2018 in a bid to combat fly-tipping. The new reduced charges aim to encourage residents to dispose of large items - such as fridges, freezers, washing machines, sofas, carpets, beds, mattresses and other furniture – responsibly. Last year there were 863 fly tips in the borough, which cost the council ÂŁ33,340 to remove. From 1 April the new charges will be ÂŁ15 for up to three items, ÂŁ25 for up to five items and ÂŁ6 for each additional item. Concessions are available. Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services at the Borough Council, Councillor Mark Nickerson said: “Over half the fly-tips last year were household items, which is a real blight on our borough, and residents need to make sure they either take their waste to one of Leicestershire County Council tips themselves, get the council to remove it or use a licensed waste carrier who they know will dispose of the waste correctly.

“Unfortunately, many residents still use unlicensed waste carriers who then fly-tip the resident’s waste. When we identify the responsible resident they will be fined or prosecuted and charged for the cost of clearing up the fly tip. “To tackle this problem, the government is looking to introduce the ÂŁ400 fine just for failure to use a registered waste carrier, so I would strongly recommend people stop looking on Twitter, Facebook and Spotted Hinckley/Barwell and so forth, when they need items removing and, unless they are absolutely certain that their waste will be disposed of correctly, they should use the council..

Officers across the county will significantly increase their enforcement actions against fly-tipping and target businesses to ensure they are also disposing of their waste correctly. The following are crimes and residents will be fined £400 if they are caught in the act of: • Leaving bags of rubbish by litter bins or in laybys • Leaving sofas and electrical items on the roadside, hoping for collection by a scrap metal collector

If residents do not want to use the council’s services, then they should ring the Environment Agency on 03708 506506 to check the person they are using is a licensed waste carrier. Residents are advised to always ask the person they are using for a waste transfer note. Anyone who does not do this could be fined or prosecuted and end up with a criminal record. Latest News from Ratby Sports Club Hello to everyone, since the last issue of the Local there has been lots happening at the Club, private parties and lots more bookings, some exciting news for the village of Ratby and I am delighted and proud to announce that Ratby Sports Club will be hosting the Crow Pie Festival on 7th July, after much negotiation we have managed to secure the job of hosting what should be a fantastic occasion, Crow Pie celebrations date back hundreds of years and the village used to all get together and yes all share a massive crow pie, the crow pie tradition stopped some years ago but the village always kept the tradition of coming together minus the pie, up until recently when for some unknown reason the Crow Pie celebration ceased to exist but thanks to the local groups, church, chapel, school and parish council we aim to resurrect the celebration and our aim is to get the whole community getting together for a day and night of fun. The organisation of the festival is still in it's early stages but if anyone is interested in having a stall, providing rides or generally just getting involved please get in touch, we are hoping to show case some local bands during the day on a stage outside with a headline act (yet to be announced) to close the evening. If you are interested in playing at the festival please drop me a line. I'm sure you will agree this is great news for the village and should be a great occasion! We are also delighted to announce that there is going to be a kickboxing and boxing group Ratby Ninjas start at the club, this is for kids of the age range 6-11 years and there is a taster session on Saturday 14th April at 9.30, this should be really good and is another sport being introduced at the club. We have some great tribute acts coming up and also 2 charity evenings, Here’s a list of things to put in your diary: Ratby Ninjas (open day) – 14th April (9.30am – 10.30am) Bananarama tribute – 14th April (7.30pm Free Entry) Adele tribute – 21st April (7.30pm Free Entry) Parkinson’s charity quiz night – 28th April (7pm) (£2 per person, max 6 in a team) ABBA tribute – 4th May (7.30pm Free Entry) Rainbows charity quiz night, supported by ATA Recruitment – 11th May (7pm) Be great to see you at some of these events, remember you don’t have to be a member to come and visit us! Ratby Primary School News.... 

Performance Poetry

Shenton Primary School Visit On Thursday 8th March, Year 3/4 visited Shenton Primary School in Leicester. Pupils had a wonderful time playing and completing art work/ Mother’s Day cards together. Despite it being a very wet day, everyone enjoyed themselves.

On Wednesday 21st March, 2018 the classes of Ratby Primary School, once again, came together, for the extremely competitive, Performance Poetry Competition... This term the competition was judged by Mrs Jones, Mrs Bedder and special guest judges Mayor Ozzy O'Shea and his consort Mrs Jenny O’Shea.

Pupils thoughts about the morning: “Everyone had a great time. We could not choose what to do because there were so many activities to choose from. My favourite was the Mother’s Day bookmark. We met lots of people and made new friends. If we went back I would try extra hard at the sewing activity.”

Tension filled the air as  the classes filed onto the stage to take their turn. Performances were filled with drama, laughter, suspense and surprise. KS1's worthy winners, were the Comets class, with 'The day I got my finger stuck up my nose' by Brian Patten. KS2's  cup was awarded to Mercury with their own version of 'The Register' adapted from a Michael Rosen poem. Altogether a fantastic occasion that celebrated International Poetry Day.

Four Pupils from Year 3/ 4 were selected to go to South Charnwood High School to compete against other children in a structure  building challenge and four pupils from Year 6 were selected to represent our school at Brookvale High School they had a great time using a range of scientific equipment to conduct different experiments. What an exciting and interesting week!

24

“I liked the way that they had amazing displays on their walls. They were bright and colourful.”

“I enjoyed meeting new people. The children were really nice. They helped us a lot and were very welcoming.” “I liked learning how to use their playground equipment. Our new friends helped us to do this”

NSPCC come to year 6

Ratby celebrates British Science Week! Ratby Primary School had an enjoyable week celebrating British Science Week! On Wednesday 14th March, we shared our learning in a Key Stage Science Assembly. It was great to see a wide  variety of experiments being conducted and the children impressed their teachers, Mrs Jones and the Science Governor Mrs MurphyCawrey with their use of scientific vocabulary and clear explanations.

“We enjoyed meeting people from another school. I really enjoyed their huge playground. They had a basketball court and a football pitch”

Recently, the NSPCC came up to our year 6 classroom to teach us how to ‘speak out and stay safe’. We learnt about … •

Speaking out;

Child abuse;

Bullying;

Cyberbullying;

Sexual abuse;

People to go to if you don’t feel safe;

ChildLine (0800 1111)



Year 6 had an amazing time and learnt lots of new things. If you ever need the ChildLine number, it is 0800 1111 (they are open 24/7, even on Christmas Day!) We hope we never need to use the NSPCC or ChildLine but it’s good to know how many children they are able help every year.

All Stars Cricket

World Book Day 2018

This half term Key Stage 1 had a visit from Nathan at All Stars Cricket. We had an assembly where Nathan told us all about All Stars cricket and even got Miss Scott and Miss Green to show us their cricket skills... or lack of. 

The also lucky enough   Year  1’s were    to be able to have a taster session. We travelled around the galaxy picking up new cricket skills along the way. The children had a fantastic morning and are all excited to try cricket in the future.

On Thursday 1st March Ratby Primary School transformed before our eyes as the staff and pupils  dressed up as their favourite book characters for ‘World  Book Day’. Each class focused on a different author and completed a carousel of activities within their year groups.

From learning how to play quidditch to illustrating Michael Rosen’s poems the day was filled with lots of fun.

This year’s theme was ‘Share a Story’ so we held special assemblies with the class teachers sharing their favourite stories and in the afternoon classes were paired together to drop everything and read. A huge thank you to Tesco, WH Smith, Scholastic and Adsa for donating prizes on the day for the best dressed book characters. To see the winners please go to our Twitter account. Thank you to all of the staff and children for making so much effort to make the day a huge success! 

HEALTHMATTERS EYE HEALTH

Around 14 people in every 1000 suffer an eye infection each year and allergic conjunctivitis is the cause of around 15% of all eye problems presenting to GPs. The eyes are a very delicate organ and medical advice should always be sought. There are many eye conditions that can be treated from the pharmacy. Our highly trained pharmacists are here to advise and refer if necessary. I have listed a few eye conditions that can be treated without the need to see your GP. Conjunctivitis is a common condition that occurs when the conjunctiva (a thin layer of cells covering the front of your eyes) becomes inflamed. The three most common causes of this inflammation are: infection (infective conjunctivitis), an allergic reaction (allergic conjunctivitis) and something irritating the conjunctiva, such as a loose eyelash (irritant conjunctivitis) Allergic Conjunctivitis: - This can be seasonal such as a symptom of hay fever or can be caused by continual exposure to something the person is allergic to. Symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis include a clear watery discharge, a generalised/diffused redness of the eye and itchiness of the eyes. Allergic conjunctivitis affects both eyes simultaneously. To treat this condition an antihistamine tablet can be taken, or if symptoms are persistent eye drops containing sodium cromoglicate can also be used. Infective Conjunctivitis: - This is caused mainly by coming in to contact with someone who already has the infection. It is therefore very important to wash your hands thoroughly after coming into contact with anyone who has infective conjunctivitis and don't share pillows or towels with them. There are 2 types of this conjunctivitis, Bacterial and Viral. The symptoms of both these conditions are similar which include, a burning sensation and a feeling of grit in your eyes. Bacterial conjunctivitis usually has an associated sticky discharge from the eye and starts off in one eye and moves to the other. Viral conjunctivitis usually has a clear runny discharge and can affect both eyes together. Cough and cold symptoms can also be associated with viral conjunctivitis. Both these conditions are self-limiting i.e. will go away on their own if left for a week or so, however you can buy treatments to speed up the healing process. The drug of choice in these conditions is Chloramphenicol which comes under many brands. It is available as an eye drop or an ointment. It will not do much for a viral infection but may be considered appropriate to prevent a secondary bacterial infection.

30

Irritant conjunctivitis: Irritant conjunctivitis can have a wide range of potential causes. Some common causes include, chlorinated water used in swimming baths, shampoo, a stray eyelash rubbing against the conjunctiva, smoke or fumes. The treatment for this type of conjunctivitis is simple. Firstly identify, then stay away from the irritant causing the problem. With all eye conditions if you have any of the symptoms below then you should see your GP or Optician: • Pain in the eye: An actual pain which is different to a general soreness, grittiness or itchiness. • Disturbance of vision: Problems in focusing or vision, different to blurriness due to a watery eye. • Eye conditions accompanied with other symptoms such as headaches, nausea and vomiting. • Recurrent subconjunctival haemorrhage (Blood shot eye) • Photophobia: Sensitivity to light. • Redness localised to one area of the eye surface. • Pupils of abnormal shape or uneven pupils • Pupils reacting unevenly to light. In order to maintain good eye health recommendations state to have an eye test every 2 years. Having an eye test won’t only tell you if you need glasses or a change of prescription, it’s also an important eye health check. It can spot many general health problems and early signs of eye conditions before you're aware of any symptoms – many of which can be treated if found early enough. If you would like any more information about anything mentioned above please call in to the Village Pharmacy, Kirby Muxloe or call us on 0116 2387353, where one of our highly trained pharmacists will be happy to help. Thank you
