But I am pleased to say that two other money raising ventures are bearing fruit. One is the Donated books that have recently delivered £74.00 and the other is, with help from the Chip Shop opposite the Library, a box provided for loose change has produced £50.00 from residents who use the Library car park to visit the shop. Our thanks to all who contributed to either of these causes.

Local Plan Consultation Launches A plan to shape housing and employment across the District of Blaby in the coming years is being consulted on with residents and local businesses. The Delivery Development Plan Document (Delivery DPD) is the second part of Blaby District Council’s overall Local Plan. The Local Plan is an important set of documents that help determine the outcome of planning applications. The Delivery DPD includes sites for new homes at Kirby Muxloe, Glenfield and Leicester Forest East. An employment site in Enderby is also proposed. A new policies map shows where development in the district should be focussed, as well as the important environmental assets that should be protected. Consultation opened on Wednesday 29 November and will close on Thursday 18 January 2018. The Council is inviting residents to view the plans and comment on the proposals within the Delivery DPD. After consultation responses are reviewed, the proposed document will be submitted to the Secretary of State for independent examination by an inspector. Once finalised, the Delivery DPD and Policies Map will be adopted and, alongside the Core Strategy will replace the Local Plan 1999. Councillor Sheila Scott, Portfolio Holder for Planning, Housing Strategy, Economic and Community Development, said: “This is a vital document for the Council as it enables us to approve and refuse planning applications on our own terms; ensuring residents get the most appropriate decisions in their area. “It also gives us the opportunity to protect and improve some of our most vital assets, as well as plan for new homes and employment sites, which are vital to help the district grow in areas we have identified will be most appropriate. All Delivery DPD documents and details of how to make comments are available at www.blaby.gov.uk/deliverydpd. Information is also on display in local libraries and at the Council’s Narborough Offices. For further details contact the Development Strategy team via email at planning.policy@blaby.gov.uk or write to the team at Blaby District Council, Council Offices, Desford Road, Narborough, LE19 2EP.

A new 16-week football league exclusively for overweight men is coming to Blaby next year. Man v Fat Football is the fast-growing, innovative weight-management scheme for men. Since its introduction in Solihull back in January 2016 it has seen thousands of men lose weight through playing football in weekly 30-minute games. With Man v Fat becoming more popular, Blaby District Council has helped to arrange a league at Blaby & Whetstone Youth Club from January 2018. The Council is part-funding the league, offering players 20% off the cost of taking part in each season. The Blaby-based league will be the first in Leicester and Leicestershire, joining over 40 other Man v Fat leagues across the UK. As well as points for winning games, teams are rewarded for weight-loss, with bonus goals given for teams who shed the pounds. Competitors do not need to live in the district to take advantage of the 20% discount. Councillor Iain Hewson, Portfolio Holder for Health Improvement, Leisure and Regulatory Services, said: “This is a perfect opportunity for men who want to lose weight. Man v Fat is a unique league which gives men a chance to play football every week and get the support they need to keep the weight off. “We’re proud to be able to offer the first league in Leicestershire so we know this is going to be popular. I encourage people to sign up as soon as possible to secure their place in the first league season.

VENUE: Ratby Methodist Church, Main Street, Ratby

The first meeting of registered players will take place at Blaby & Whetstone Youth Club on Wednesday 31 January 2018, 8-10pm. The league will begin from 07 February and run until May. For more details and to register for the league, visit www.manvfatfootball.org/blaby.

RATBY PARISH COUNCIL IMPORTANT NEWS The Council offices will be closed from 4th January 2018 until 22nd January 2018 for remedial structural works to be carried out on the building. The Council is making arrangements for the telephone to be re-routed and will be answered and residents will also be able to contact the Council via email.

Damage to Council trees and hedgerows Considerable damage has been done to some of the Council’s trees and hedgerows. This damage has occurred at Ferndale Park. The Council had previously agreed to lay all the hedges throughout the village and this will be done over a period of 3 years. The hedgerows at Ferndale Park are over 100 years old and, as such, are protected by law. The damage to these hedgerows is therefore deemed to be criminal damage and if persons responsible are identified the Council will prosecute. The same rule applies to the Maple trees which have been badly cut back. Residents are permitted to cut back branches which overhang their respective properties but in no way should any further branches be cut. The 3 Maple trees in question are in Ferndale Park itself and whoever was responsible for cutting the trees and hedgerows back acted illegally. The damage caused will involve the Parish Council in extra expenditure in replacing hedgerows, which will naturally come out of the precept for the Parish. Should this sort of damage continue it will inevitably result in the Parish Precept being raised.

Fly-tipping/Rubbish A considerable amount of rubbish, grass cuttings etc., plus plate glass is being thrown behind hedgerows adjacent to residents’ properties – this again is occurring in Ferndale Park. Rubbish, grass cuttings etc., should not be dumped into the park but should be disposed of responsibly. The park is a dedicated open space which is maintained by the Parish Council but should not involve the council in the extra expense of having to clear up rubbish which has been dumped on the park.

Christmas Decorations Christmas decorations are now displayed and the Council wishes to thanks all those shops/ business who have decorated, particularly the displays in Pabari’s windows.

January Parish Council Meeting Please note that there will NO Parish Council meeting in January 2018 due to the structural works being carried out at its premises.

THE PARISH COUNCIL WISHES ALL RESIDENTS A VERY HAPPY CHRISTAMAS AND A HAPPY, HEALTHY NEW YEAR

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group generally meets 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which usually take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Main St., Kirby Muxloe and start at 7.30 pm. They are normally on either a Thursday or Tuesday. Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe library and on our website, which is www.kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org. PLEASE NOTE: Our next meeting will be on Thursday 18th January 2018, when the subject will be ‘The Workhouses of Leicestershire’, by speaker- our own Mike Gould, Chair of KMLHG.

A Walk Down Main Street In this series of articles, we take a stroll down Main Street, Kirby Muxloe, and a walk into the past. Each article will feature a shop or business on Main Street. Do you remember it or know anyone who might? If there is anything else about this, or any other business on Main Street, that you can tell us, please email us kmlhg999@gmail.com or telephone Judith on 0116 2393767 or Mike on 0116 2386026.

Faith Cottage- 400, Ratby Lane Most people will recognise the white painted cottage at the junction of Main Street and Ratby Lane, but did you know that it really lived up to its name of “Faith Cottage”? It is thought to have been built in the second half of the 19th century and was occupied in the early days by the Henser family. Henry Thomas Henser had previously lived in the St Mary’s area of Leicester and had run a grocery shop on King Richard’s Road. He moved into Faith Cottage around 1876, and as a deeply religious man, was soon offering his house as the first meeting place for the non-conformistchurch in the village.

Mr Henser’s youngest daughter, Annie, married James Boden of Kirby Muxloe in 1896, and when Mr Henser died in 1911, his daughter and husband moved into Faith Cottage. A daughter, Olive, was born to them in 1898 and a son in 1911. This family were also deeply religious and stories have been told by Charlie Moore (now deceased) of him as a young boy, knocking on the door on Sunday mornings, to be given a small religious text to take away and study. It is known that the family opened a grocery shop at Faith Cottage sometime after 1911. At this time, James Boden worked as a dyers hose trimmer. However, in 1912 a James Bowden is recorded as a shop keeper in the village, so was this the same family with a misspelling of the name or was it someone else? In 1916, Annie is listed as a shop keeper and also running ‘tea rooms’ at Faith Cottage, most likely to cater for the visitors to the castle. Teas were served in the garden if the weather was good. By 1941, Annie is listed in Kelly’s directory as running just a grocery shop in Faith Cottage. Annie and her daughter Olive, who married later in life, are well remembered. The shop had a ‘Rowntrees’ Chocolate cabinet on one end of the counter and tins of biscuits on the other. The mother and daughter are thought to have been Plymouth Brethren and referred to by the villagers as ‘Pilgrims’. The family erected a wooden shed in their front garden with 3 signs on the side. One was ‘Prepare to meet thy God’. There is a story of a young man of the village travelling down Blood’s Hill on his motor bike, maybe going

too fast or skidding (there was no traffic island in those days), crashing through the hedge and landing beside the shed. On looking up he saw the sign ‘Prepare to meet thy God’. He must have had quite a fright!

The ladies are remembered as being very popular with children, especially as they sold sweets. Some of the young men of the village, when on their way to the Majestic cinema in Ratby, would play tricks on the ladies. The boys would call in at the shop to buy a single cigarette (that was quite normal in those days). They knew the ladies didn’t approve of and didn’t sell cigarettes, but just went in to hear the ladies retort ‘If God had wanted us to smoke, he would have given us chimneypots on top of our heads’. The ladies usually took it all as a bit of fun and would be heard saying ‘boys will be boys!’ During wartime one well-known local lady was given a two-pound bag of sugar as a wedding present. That was a much-prized gift as sugar was severely rationed. Olive Boden married Dr Robert Henson, a widower, in 1945 at the age of 47. Mrs Henser died in 1947 at the age of 77.

Although the meetings moved to larger premises in the same year, by 1878, Faith Cottage was again the chosen venue. By that time, Mr Henser had knocked down the central wall in the house and had also installed an American organ for the services. In 1879, there was a need for larger premises and the congregation moved to the Red Barn on Desford Road. Mr Henser, being quite displeased at the time, initially refused to pass on the chairs used by the congregation. However, he eventually relented and parted with the chairs, also offering the use of his American organ, with himself as organist. By 1883, the first purpose- built property for non-conformist worship, the Zion Chapel on Main Street (now the Scout Hut), was erected.

LFE Film Evenings

Kirby Muxloe WI held their AGM this month but it was an AGM with a difference as we are also celebrating our 90th Year .After the business of the AGM was completed there followed a presentation of the newly sewn Top Table Cloth which has all the members signatures embroidered on it. It looked absolutely fantastic, a lot of hard work has gone into the making of it and but well worthwhile.

LFE Film Evenings on Thursday 4 January 2018 will feature “Another Mother’s Son”



This was followed by a potted history of the KMWI through the decades including some memorable anecdotes from pass members, followed by the presentation of 3 photographic albums detailing the history of KMWI , which members viewed in social time, bringing back some memorable moments.

Category: Drama. UK 2017, (12A), 1hr 45min.

Based on the true story of Louisa Gould, the drama is set during World War II on the Nazi-occupied island of Jersey. Lou took in an escaped Russian POW and hid him over the war's course. The tension mounts    as it becomes clearV that Churchill will not risk an assault to recapture the British soil, Y and the island-community spirit begins to fray under D pressures of hunger, occupation and divided loyalty. Against this backdrop, Lou fights to preserve her family's sense of humanity and to protect the Russian boy as if he was her own..  



We were then treated to a variety of monologues from Pauline Osband and Mary Oughton which were both funny and thoughtful; they really ought to be on the stage. Last of all we were treated to coffee and cakes, always a welcome addition to any meeting. On Friday 17th November 53 members attended the 90th Birthday Celebration Dinner held at Kirby Muxloe Bowls Club. Members were greeted with a glass of fizz and canapes followed by an excellent carvery meal, finishing with coffee and cake made by one of our members, Sue Wareham . We were entertained throughout the evening by Peter Presto “Magician” who baffled us with numerous close up magic tricks, it was a memorable evening and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Kirby Muxloe WI meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall Main Street. We start at 7.30pm and usually finish approx. 9.45pm. We have a varied programme of speakers and events and we also run Craft, Walking, Book, Bell Ringers groups, and a lot more besides. Why not come along and give us try, you can attend as a visitor twice before committing to join and you would always receive a warm welcome, just make yourself known at the door or give me a ring on 2869253 if you have any questions. Ratby Primary School News.... 

Friday 17th November 2017  Wear your pyjamas or onesies

On Friday 17th November, the whole school celebrated this year's BBC Children in Need Appeal. Our school was very excited to be joining many others around the UK to participate in the fundraising programme.

 

In order to help raise money to support disadvantaged children across the whole of the UK, the pupils took part in  assemblies and lessons where they learned about the work of Children in Need. All staff and pupils were very excited to wear their pyjamas or onesies to school and donate £1.00 towards helping raise money. We are very proud to announce that a total of £357.59 was raised by the school. We would like to give a very special mention to Sophia Higgins, who selflessly donated all of her birthday money to Children in Need and received a gold star award from Pudsey himself!

Get Caught Reading! Over October half term the children took  part in Ratby Primary School’s Extreme Reading Challenge. The children had to be photographed reading anywhere they wanted. The entries were fantastic from pumpkin picking to reading at the swimming baths! Thank you to all of the children, parents and teachers that entered. Thanks to our sponsors the Foundation Stage winner received a fabulous family pass to Play 360. In Key Stage 1 the winner won an amazing family pass to Leicester Outdoor Pursuits and finally the Key Stage 2 winner won a membership and two games at Laserforce Leicester!!! Mrs Jones had the difficult job of judging the winners however after much deliberation the winners are…

UNICEF World’s Largest Lesson

On Monday 20th November, 2017 we took part in the world's largest lesson created by UNICEF. The charity UNICEF works around the world to help children be children!

In Year 5 we passed around the 'world' and shared what we would do to help children if we ruled the world. We had ideas like.... giving every child clean water, to make sure children have homes, to ensure they have friends and many more! We designed an emoji to represent next year's world children day, you can see these on the Ratby Primary School twitter page. We also danced to Pink 'what about us', the children from around the world sang it. We hope this will make you think of all the children around the world. They are all different but all equal and all deserve the same things.

WW2 Day

ď ?

On Tuesday 14th November, all of Year 6 came to school dressed as evacuee children. As our new topic is `A Childs War` (which is all about the second world war) we spent the whole time having a WW2 Day. First we looked at what evacuation was and we started to cook some World War 2 styled biscuits.

Through the rest of the day, we did the following tasks: • Darning (sewing) socks; • Knitting; • Research on evacuation, food and drinks, daily life, jobs and the ration system; • Making gas mask boxes. Finally, we watched the start of `Goodnight Mr Tom`, which is about a child – called William - who was evacuated to a house in the countryside belonging to not very nice man! All of Year 6 are excited to learn more about WW2, A Child’s War and are also desperate to find out what happens to William in `Goodnight Mr Tom`.

Year 5/6 Mixed Football On Thursday, 10 Year 5 and 6 children went to a football tournament. Everyone who went loved it. Ratby won 1, drew 2 and lost 2 and we never gave up even if we lost!



The assembly was about WW1 and we included: songs, poems and the work we did. Two children     read out their poems of a soldier on the battlefield and two children read their diary entries from the point of view of a soldier leaving for war. We also read poems about Flanders Fields and why we wear a poppy. In addition, we shared a few of the songs that would have been sung during the war. Everyone wore handmade poppies which we had created using our own sewing skills. We wore them to remember the soldiers that died as they were the first flowers to bloom on Flanders Fields after the war. Poppies raise money for old men and women who fought in the war and whose lives have been changed because of it.

Everyone had fun and we can’t wait for the next one.

At 11 o’clock, we took a wreath down to the war memorial and had a two-minute silence to remember all of those who have sacrificed their lives for us.

HEALTHMATTERS Making Sure a Merry Christmas Leads To a Happy and Healthy New Year As party season is drawing near, it comes with a whole host of health problems. Everyone even those disciplined throughout the year make the most of the festive season, with all the eating, drinking and merrymaking. This can take its  toll especially with people  with chronic medical conditions.

The first to suffer tend to be those prone to digestive or stress-related conditions. People prone to digestive conditions may experience bouts of diarrhoea, indigestion, heart burn, bloating, nausea and vomiting. This can be due to eating spicy foods, eating big heavy meals, eating too fast and drinking excess alcohol.

Diarrhoea can lead to dehydration, so you should drink plenty of fluids (small, frequent sips of water), sometimes oral rehydration sachets may also be necessary. Loperamide (available without prescription) is the main medicine used to treat diarrhoea as it has been shown to be effective and has few side effects. Indigestion and heartburn can be treated using antacids such as Rennie and Gaviscon. There are also products available to treat nausea, but speak to one of our highly trained pharmacist first before purchasing them as they are not suitable for everyone.

People prone to stress and anxiety can experience a variety of  symptoms. The stress and anxiety bought on by an overload of guests, over-excited children, extra expenses etc. can take its toll on an individual’s overall health. There is evidence that Christmas puts a strain on families. Statistics show that January is the busiest month for divorce lawyers. Simple measures can reduce the stress and anxiety, such as making time for yourself to relax, doing plenty of exercise as this releases endorphins in the brain and can be uplifting, and having early nights when possible. If there is still a persistent lack of energy, iron supplements or a product like Metatone Tonic may help. During Christmas most people over indulge and studies by the British Nutrition Foundation have shown that people on average gain 5lb (2kg) in the four-week Christmas period. This extra weight gain can be hard to lose, but a few healthy habits such a brisk walk and snacking on fruit and vegetables rather than chocolate can help reduce this weight gain.

Another common ailment during the festive season is headaches, normally bought on by poor posture, stress, lack of sleep, bright flickering lights and specific foods (e.g. Chocolate, cheese and citrus fruit). Headaches are an inconvenience at any time and sufferers normally want immediate relief. There are a range of effective pain killers available depending on the type of headache. There are also simple and natural measures which are also effective such as menthol balms, sticks or strips applied directly to the forehead. Other things to try include having a warm bath, massaging the neck and shoulders and sitting or lying in a darkened room. The main complaint after excessive alcohol consumption is the Hangover. After a night of heavy drinking, the symptoms most people are all too familiar with, can include, headaches, sickness, dizziness, dehydration, diarrhoea and tiredness. If you do experience a hangover, you can take pain killers, antacids, rehydration sachets and drink plenty of water. Eating bananas and kiwis are good as they have high source of potassium which counteracts the potassium lost from the diuretic effect of alcohol. Things to avoid are caffeine containing drinks (Tea, Coffee, Energy Drinks etc.) because although they give you a temporary lift, they may also cause further dehydration. All of the above symptoms are readily treatable from the pharmacy and don’t need a visit to the GP. All you need is a well-stocked medicines cabinet to ensure you do not suffer throughout the festive period. At the Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe we have all of the medicinal products in stock. If you would like any more information on anything mentioned above, please call us on 0116 2387353 or pop in to the Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe, where one of our highly trained pharmacists will be happy help. I would like to thank all of our customers for their support throughout the year and for helping our small independent pharmacy continue providing services to the community. County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com

Parking Chapel Lane/Station Road, Ratby I would just like to respond to a Facebook post on Spotted Ratby regarding the parking at the junction of Chapel Lane and Station Road. Residents know that I have been dealing with these issues and will be aware that I have been working with officers from Highways for the past year to resolve the parking and traffic issues around Chapel Lane, Station Road and Main Street. I have held site meetings with Highways officers and we have put a scheme together to restrict parking at this junction to enable a safe exit out. The scheme will also prevent parking outside the new Co-Op this was part of the agreement when the planning was granted. I hope to provide full details in my next article as the full scheme is due to go out to public consultation in January. I have also spoken to the owners of Harrison Spice and asked them not to park their delivery vehicle on the junction. The scheme has been delayed as the Highways department were consolidating all there parking regulations over the past year. If you have an issue please contact me directly. I am approachable and will always help where ever I can, my phone is always on even when we are on holiday.

The PNA helps NHS England manage and make decisions about requests from pharmacists or pharmacy businesses to set up new community pharmacies, merge businesses, or move premises within Leicestershire. They also provide insight into other areas where improvements can be made.Preparing PNAs is the responsibility of Health and Wellbeing Boards. These Boards bring together local authorities, the NHS and other key partners to improve the health and wellbeing of their local areas. The Leicestershire Health and Wellbeing Board has now created a draft PNA for Leicestershire and we would like your comments on it. You can access the consultation by following the below link. www.leicestershire.gov.uk/ have-your-say/current-consultations/ pharmaceutical-needs-assessment The consultation closes on 2nd January 2018, with the findings reported back in the final PNA document, published by April 2018. If you require a hard copy of the questionnaire, or need any further information, please call Natalie Greasley on 0116 305 4266 or email natalie.greasley@leics.gov.uk

Phishing Don't click on links or attachments within unsolicited emails. The number of online shopping related phishing emails increases significantly during the holiday period. Bank transfers 65% of Action Fraud reports during the 2016 Christmas period were linked to online auction sites. Don’t pay for goods or services by bank transfer unless you know and trust the person. Payments via bank transfer offer you no protection if you become a victim of fraud.

Phantom Debt Collectors and Bailiffs Fraud Alert Action Fraud has recently experienced an increase in the number of calls to members of the public by bogus bailiffs requesting payments for a “phantom” debt. The fraud involves being cold-called by someone purporting to be a bailiff working on behalf of a court, attempting to recover funds for a non-existent debt. The caller will request payment by means of bank transfer and if this is refused, will threaten to visit the premises to recover the debt that is owed. A range of different businesses and individuals are being targeted. Though this type of fraud can occur throughout the UK, Action Fraud has noted that a significant level of reports are being made from those in the Yorkshire area. Tips for staying safe: • Confirm what the debt is regarding; bailiffs are only used to recover certain debts such as council tax, child support and compensation orders. Bailiffs are not used to recover debts relating to private advertisement; these would be collected by debt collectors. Debt collectors do not have the same legal powers as bailiffs and will not have special court authorisation to act. For more details regarding this, please look at the Citizens Advice website. • If you work for a business and receive a call or visit from bailiffs or debt collectors, be sure to speak with your manager or business owner first. Never pay the debts

yourself on behalf of the business you work for; some fraudsters have suggested employees do this whilst talking with them, suggesting they can then be reimbursed by their employer, when in reality the debt is non-existent. • Double check with the court or originating company to confirm whether the call is legitimate; if you use a landline make sure you hear the dialling tone prior to dialling as the caller could still be on the line and you could potentially speak to the fraudster(s) to confirm the non-existent debt. Also be sure to independently search for a telephone number to call and clarify; never use a number provided by the caller without carrying out your own research. • Request details of the debt in writing to confirm its legitimacy. • Do not feel rushed or intimidated to make a decision based on a phone call. • You can report suspicious calls like these to Action Fraud by visiting www.actionfaud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040. I would like to take this opportunity to thank residents and councillors for your continued support and wish you all a very Happy and Peaceful Christmas and a very Happy Healthy and prosperous New Year. Remember I am only an Email or a phone call away. Kind Regards

Ozzy O’shea -

Shelter issues warning ahead of critical Christmas season, as free helpline receives a call every 22 seconds Shocking new figures show Shelter received a call for help every 22 seconds in the run up to Christmas last year, and the charity is warning that the situation this winter could be set to get worse. New research from Shelter and M&S shows that in 2016 the charity’s helpline received over a hundred thousand calls in the two months leading into Christmas – while more than 500 calls were made on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day alone. A crippling combination of rising homelessness, sky-high rents, problems with Universal Credit and a dearth of affordable homes means the charity is preparing for huge numbers of people struggling with homelessness and housing problems to come to them for support. And with calls to the free Shelter helpline increasing by 25% over the past year, their

expert advisers are overwhelmed with pleas for housing help. The Shelter helpline is funded by M&S customers throughout the festive season, with 5% of every purchase made from the ‘Festive Collection for Shelter’ going directly to the charity. This means the helpline can offer housing advice and support every single day of the year for people battling bad housing and homelessness. Mark Cook, a helpline adviser for Shelter, said: 'Every Christmas I speak to parents in despair as they face the trauma of homelessness, when they should be filling stockings and looking forward to Christmas dinner. 'Even though I’ll be working at Christmas, I think myself so lucky to be able to go home at the end of the day when there are so many families having to go without such a basic need.

'No family should face the agony of losing the roof over their heads, which is why we’re calling on people to get their lunch from M&S’s Festive Collection for Shelter. Something as simple as buying a sandwich could make the world of difference to a family whose home is on the line this Christmas.'

Borough Councillors Report Cllr Ozzy O’Shea Tel 0116 2394336 or 07808585825 Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com

Remembrance Day Ratby 2017 As parade Marshall for our village of Ratby, it falls upon myself to express our gratitude to the overwhelming response and support that the residents showed on this most important day in our village year. I, now having completed 22 years as Parade Marshall, am always amazed at the turnout but nothing prepared me for this. Ozzy, as Mayor alongside our Mayoress Jenny was unfortunately seconded to oversee the Parade in Hinckley. We had a lot of new faces this year becoming Officers of the Parade and they did a fantastic job to the benefit of the whole village. I can say that this year's Parade was not that easy to organize due to the lack of police presence but with a determination that it would go ahead, I think we pulled it off. I have to take this time to write a few thank you's as without their help, I could not have done it. First of all, a huge welcome to our new vicar Rev Ed Bampton, who had never partaken in a Parade and service such as this and did an amazing job. Secondly, to the Clerk and Members of Ratby Parish Council who paid for the wreaths and the Public liability Insurance at very short notice which allowed us to go ahead. Also to the Deputy Lord Lieutenant Sally Bowie who loved the whole experience and the village. Fourthly, to our Road Marshalls who took on the hazardous job of stopping the traffic using only mobiles. You were brilliant and we owe a debt of thanks. Fifthly, to Mr Stephen Roche who now reads the names of the fallen in Church and at the Memorial but worked alongside me collecting signs and cones, putting them up and taking them down and returning the cones. Also Mr Lee Moult who did a superb job lowering and raising the flag. Almost finally, apart from Tony Briggs as our Parade Flag Bearer and was as professional as ever, I have to take this time to give credit to our Brass Band and Youth Organizations to were amazing and we were joined this year by the Rainbows who are very young but did an exceptional job. Lastly, it falls upon me to thank you the residents who turned out in your hundreds to support and to remember. Whilst there was standing room only in Church totalling some 250, no one could have predicted the amount of residents gathered at our War Memorial estimated at a further 350 plus. This was the biggest

amount of Residents on Main Street I have witnessed in a very long time. I think the majority then made it's way to the Plough Inn as is traditional and thank you to Jonny, Lisa and all the staff for your hard work. Plans for next year are already in progress with a microphone and speaker for the service at the Memorial and walkie talkie's for the Marshalls. Again, this year was amazing so from the heart, thank you. Lest we forget. Chris

Latest News Frrom... om... Christmas... A Time For Giving As Christmas approaches and thoughts turn to giving giffts, ts, it seems appropriate to repeat the well known phrase, ‘A ‘A dog is for life, not just T give animals as presents pr for Christmas’. This message is a plea to NOT at Christmas, or at any other time for that matter. The Christmas season in particular can be a time when normal routines are disrupted. Parrties, ties, entertainment and visitors do not make ideal situations in which to introduce and settle a new pet into unfamiliar surroundings. Regarding a pet as a gifftt also reinforces r the attitude that animals are commodities or lifestyle accessories. Another concern against giving pets as giffts ts is the number of animals returned to centres or callously abandoned in the weeks around and affter ter Christmas. Choosing a companion animal is very personal and should be thought through and researched carefully. Despite advice from the RSPCA and other animal welfare organisations there are still people who adopt a pet with the same mentality as buying a product which can be discarded or replaced at the slightest whim. Having a pet is not compulsory and prospective pet owners should consider every aspect of the species they intend to adopt before proceeding. Animals have feelings and caring for another living being is a privilege and a responsibility. There are many factors to consider when choosing a pet. Any reputable animal organisation such as Woodside will do everything possible to guide and match people to the most appropriate pet for their circumstances and lifestyles. Unfortunately there are many unscrupulous pet traders and online sources who do not give accurate information about the animals they are selling or care about animal welfare. They are It is recommended that prospective pet owners go to a leading animal welfare charity or re homing centre. Pet shops, newspaper ads and websites are not recommended! Although there are many reputable private breeders, breeding pets contributes to the serious problem of pet overpopulation while thousands of healthy very adoptable animals languish in shelters.

ticular animal species. challenging or they may be attracted to a parrticular Others may want to impress their contemporaries or keep a pet as a status symbol. For a variety of reasons there has been a massive increase in the demand for exotic animals, fuelled by online selling. One hundred million wild animals are traded annually. There are over a thousand species of exotic animals kept by private keepers, greatly outnumbering the range of traditional domesticated species such as cats and dogs. Many of them are dangerous wild animals requiring special licences which is of great concern to animal welfare organisations Fortunately at Woodside the animals needing a permanent home are traditional pet species, such as cats, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits and

spending Christmas at the centre. Although they will be cared for and pampered over the festive season by the dedicated staffff and volunteers, giving a gifftt to these animals with no home yet or making a donation dona to Woodside would be a wonderful gesture in the spirit of Christmas. Pet toys, treats and pet food, (kitten food in particular is always needed) will help the animals celebrate the festive season. Blankets and pet beds will keep the animals snug and warm as well as dog coats when they go for their daily walks. Old towels and blankets are always in needed as they have a short life at Woodside. Old items no longer suitable for human use are ideal for the animals. All donations can be dropped into Woodside Animal Centre, 190 Scudamore Road, Leicester LE3 1UQ. No animal asks to come into this world but once they are here we all have a responsibility to ensure they are protected from harm and cared for in a safe and appropriate environment. They all have a right to play, feel joy and give and receive love. They can’t choose their owners but Woodside takes great care to make the right choice on their behalf. On behalf of all the Woodside animals, staffff and volunteers may we wish you a Happy Christmas. Elizabeth Allison
