SAVE OUR CHILDREN’S CENTRES
24 LEICESTERSHIRE CHILDREN’S CENTRES THREATENED WITH CLOSURE. A campaign has started to fight the proposed closure of Children’s Centres across Leicestershire. Leicestershire County Council have proposed closing 24 Children's Centres (formerly known as Surestart centres) and one family centre and merging the service with all other family and young people’s services, including Supporting Leicestershire Families (SLF) scheme, Early Help Information Support and Assessment (EHISA) and the Youth Offending service (YOS). Following the launch of the council’s consultation an action group, ‘Save Our Children’s Centres Leicestershire’ has been started on Facebook to oppose the closures. The group comprises of users past and present, volunteers, health professionals and various support groups operating out of the centres. Liz Yeates, one of the group’s founder members, who used the centres with her young daughter said, “We cannot allow these services to be cut from the lives of the most vulnerable, and we’ve got to defend the jobs of the people who have dedicated their careers to assisting our most vulnerable young children. In addition to the council's own services many other agencies operate out of Children' Centres, for example Health Visiting services, Breastfeeding Support, Child Health Events and many volunteer led groups such as Breastfeeding groups, Parent Carer Well-being, Sling (babywearing), Multiple-birth (twins etc.) support groups, Childminder groups, singing and music groups. The centres are also well used by the council's own GO LEARN service providing valuable education programs for parents in need. Liz Blackshaw, a volunteer who has worked at a number of the Children's Centres and another founder member of the action group said, “The centres have transformed the lives of young children and their parents up across Leicestershire. The important role that children’s centres play in providing effective multi-agency working is widely recognised both locally and nationally. Adding “In all likelihood it is the parents of the most vulnerable children who will be the ones least likely to attend the new centres. Michelle Robson, mother of four and volunteer for Home Start a charity operating out of the centres said, “I’m particularly worried about the effect the closures would have on a mothers mental health. Early parenthood can be very isolating and the support and contact mums get at the centre is vitally important. Children's Centres are worth their weight in gold and without them my own story could have been very different. The group has expressed their concern that vulnerable families and children in need will be forced to make extended (and in some cases prohibitively expensive) journeys to the remaining centres. In addition the group is worried that some may feel stigmatized for going to a building that will also be used for the Youth Offending Service. County Councilor Sean Sheahan, Labour's spokesperson on Children and Families, said "Children's Centres are a precious resource for young families whenever they need extra support. Closing Children's Centres and taking away that support risks enormous harm, not only to families today, but also to future generations." Maria Bagnall who is an administrator of the group’s Facebook page has started a petition on 38degrees to oppose the changes https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/save-leicestershire-s-children-s-centres But she stressed that the most important thing was for all users, volunteers anyone else with an interest to complete the on-line consultation. The survey for the consultation can be found at https://tinyurl.com/y7du448l Emails pertaining to the consultation should be sent to earlyhelpreview@leics.gov.uk The consultation closes on midnight Sunday 22nd April.

Local Scout Fundraising in Kirby Muxloe
LFE Film Evenings LFE Film Evenings on Thursday 1 March will feature “The Sense of an Ending”. Category: Drama. UK 2017, (15).
Hi, my name is James and I’m a Scout from Kirby Muxloe. I have been lucky to be selected to be one of 54 scouts from Leicestershire who will represent our country at the World Scout Jamboree 2019 which will be held in West Virginia, USA. This is an opportunity of a lifetime to meet Scouts from across the world, share experiences and represent the UK and Kirby Muxloe. The cost of the trip is just over £4,000, which I will be fundraising over the next year.
Tony Webster leads a reclusive and quiet existence until long buried secrets from his past force him to face the flawed recollections of his younger self, the truth about his first love and the devastating consequences of decisions made a lifetime ago.
Some of the costs will help Scouts from under privileged countries who would otherwise not be able to share in this lifetime experience. Over the coming year, I will be taking part in numerous fundraising activities and would appreciate any support that you are able to give me on my quest to Jamboree 2019. You can keep in touch with my fundraising activities through my regular updates in this paper. If you wish to get further information or feel you are able to support me then please email ‘jamesjamboree2019@gmail.com’.
Thank-you so much for your support James.

Blaby Council agrees refuse and recycling changes Plans to move waste collections in the District of Blaby to alternate weekly have been approved by Councillors in response to a reduction of £745,000 of external funding.
•
Households in the district may be eligible for an increase in the capacity of their refuse bin depending on the number of permanent residents:
Following the loss of £505,000 in recycling credits from Leicestershire County Council and £240,000 in a central government grant to run weekly recycling collections, Blaby District Council has spent a considerable amount of time looking at the options available to close the financial gap.
•
1-3 residents can order up to 280ltrs, with a standard capacity of 140ltrs
•
4-6 residents can order up to 380ltrs, with a standard capacity of 240ltrs
•
Households of up to 7+ residents can order up to 480ltrs, with a standard capacity of 380ltrs
A four-week consultation in October 2017 November 2017 was undertaken to gather resident’s views on the proposals. Over 8,800 consultation responses were received during the consultation, with feedback vital for shaping the scheme. Following consideration of residents’ needs and an in-depth study of the data, the new scheme will ensure all households have sufficient capacity to manage a move from weekly to alternate weekly collections. The new scheme will begin in the summer of 2018. Councillors approved plans at the Extraordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 23 January, including:
Any bins ordered that take households over the standard refuse capacity will incur a oneoff charge. There may also be a need to make a one-off charge for orders of recycling bins which take households over the standard eligible capacity. However, this will depend on the outcome of negotiations with Leicestershire County Council over a recycling incentive scheme authorised at their Cabinet meeting in September 2016. Bins will be available to order in anticipation of the scheme in due course. This will be communicated to residents nearer the time.
Ratby Senior Citizen's Cinema Club
Councillor Terry Richardson, Leader of Blaby District Council, said: “Our new scheme will not only help us to close the financial gap left by the substantial loss in funding mentioned above, but it has been designed to ensure that we continue to deliver a first-rate service. “The feedback from the consultation was extremely valuable to us, and I should like to thank all those residents who participated for taking the time to give us their views. “Evidence from the consultation shows that a large proportion of residents will see no change in their bin size and for those who meet the criteria for larger bins exchanges will be arranged should they wish. In addition, where residents would like a larger bin, but do not meet the criteria, we will meet this request, but charges will/may be applicable. “Change is never welcome but almost all councils now offer a service similar to the one we are moving to. What I can assure residents is that we have the quality of staff who will manage this transition efficiently, be available to address residents’ questions, and who will continue to deliver a service we can all be proud of.” Full details on the new scheme and a frequently asked questions page will be available via www.blaby.gov.uk/waste2018. Final plans on ordering any additional or replacement bins will be announced when finalised.

RATBY PARISH COUNCIL LATEST NEWS... Ferndale Park Footpaths In response to last month’s local letter regarding the footpaths at Ferndale Park, the same information had already been sent to the Council before the article went to press and an acknowledgement and response had been given! The Parish Council is aware of the state of the paths and is always grateful to residents who highlight problems in the village and will deal with the relevant matter as soon as possible. However, on this occasion, the Council has, unfortunately, had more pressing matters to deal with in respect of the office building. As you may or may not be aware, the Parish Council office has been closed since 8th January 2018 for urgent remedial structural work to be carried out. These initial works included removal of plaster from the chimney breast on the 1st floor. However, on removal of the plaster the condition of the brickwork had deteriorated so much that the Parish Council had to instruct a Structural Engineer who carried out an additional inspection and presented a further report which recommends removal of the chimney breast and chimney stack. Consequently, the office will remain closed until further notice.
Ratby Open Mic Night is Back! After a break over the New Year, the Ratby Open Mic Night held at the Plough Inn Burroughs Road, Ratby will return on Tuesday 13th February 2018. The Open Mic Night will now be on the second Tuesday of the month starting at 8.30pm. The sessions have been going for over 2 years and have built up a good following of both musicians and audience. Over that time a number of people have been encouraged to take the plunge and perform in front of an audience. It’s a great way to sharpen your act. If you have hidden talent that you wish to develop then this is the session for you. A P.A. is provided and the audience is friendly and supportive. Bring along your own instrument and have a go. Experienced performers are also very welcome too! If you just want to watch you will also be welcome. We always have a great night and now it is on Tuesdays, the tasty, well-kept beer will be cheaper! Here are some photos taken at the November night. Find all our events on the Leicestershire Open Mic/Jam Nite Promotions page on Facebook.
It is hoped that residents will appreciate for safety reasons alone, the necessity of dealing with the office building over other matters which may need attention. Allotments The Ratby Allotments Association will cease to exist from 1st April 2018, members having voted to cease as an Association. From 1st April 2018, therefore, the allotment sites will revert to Parish Council management. Any residents who are interested in cultivating a plot on either site, i.e., Pear Tree or Taverner Drive (Long Meadow) please contact the Parish Council either by email: ratbypcouncil@btconnect.com or telephone 0116 239 0167.

Ratby Primary School News....
School Council News School Council meets every two weeks to talk about how we can improve our school. Recently, we have been discussing how not to use as much plastic. Lots of the plastic we use goes into the water and can sink to the bottom of the ocean. Animals might think it is food, so they will eat it and choke. That the animal could die from choking. So please think about the plastic you use as it is bad for our environment. Watch this space to find out how we are going to try and stop using so much plastic in school and around our village. We have started by trying to get everyone in school to use refillable water bottles. Have you got one?
Also remember, if you have a plastic sweet wrapper, don’t just chuck it on the floor - keep it in your pocket till you find a bin around you.

Forest Fun in Foundation Stage
On Wednesday 10th January, 2018, the Young Voices Choir went to the Genting Arena in Birmingham to sing with a choir of 6555 children, we have been practising since the end of the Summer last year! We had to get there early so we could practise in the day, with all the other children from different schools, a live orchestra and the professional singers. As well as the singing there were fantastic performances from Urban Strides an - urban dance group - and the M4gnets - a beat-boxing group. During the live concert that evening we sang alongside Natalie Williams and Alfie Sheard, they were both amazing! Our choir was made up of 48, Year5 many hours practising and 6 children, we had spent during lunchtimes and after school - our teachers were very proud of us all. As a group we loved singing and performing, especially the Pop Medley and Jambo Bwana.
Over the autumn term Foundation Stage have started ‘Forest School’ in the nature area. 20 children took part and worked together to den build, make fairy houses and even made muddy potions. Mrs Payne led the groups on a Monday and Thursday afternoon with the help of Mrs Warwick. The children loved getting muddy and having fun outdoors. The highlight of their sessions was in the last week when they had a real campfire and toasted marshmallows and had hot chocolate by the fire. Over the Spring term Mrs Payne will be working with 20 new children and having lots of forest fun! “We played in the mud and had hot chocolate, we played games like ‘Stuck in the Mud’ Eli
‘We looked for fairies and made them a village’ Dana
‘I liked making a muddy cake, we got really muddy and it was fun!’ Kielan

A Walk Down Main Street
In this series of articles, we take a stroll down Main Street, Kirby Muxloe, and a walk into the past. Each article will feature a shop or business on Main Street. Do you remember it or know anyone who might? If there is anything else about this, or any other business on Main Street, that you can tell us, please email us at info@kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org or telephone Judith on 0116 2393767 or Mike on 0116 2386026. Fred Clarke, builder and contractor, 110, Main Street, Kirby Muxloe Frederick Clarke was born in Leicester in 1902. The family lived in several houses, including a short spell at Soar Mill, now the Mill on the Soar restaurant. By 1912, it was evident that there was war on the horizon and many young men were keen to join up and fight for their country. Fred was not old enough to enlist but this did not deter him, so in 1916, at the age of 14, having just left school, he joined the Sea Scouts. Fred was already a member of the Scout movement and in 1910 the Sea Scouts had been set up by Baden Powell, as an extension of the scouting movement, to encourage boys to help defend the British coastal areas. Fred joined up, was given his initial training and then posted to Rottingdean on the Sussex coast. Rottingdean was a training ground for early aircraft and their crews, and so it was crucial that the coast was well protected. When all military-age men were called up in 1914, the coastguard services were depleted. Many men were replaced by boys such as Fred, whose job it was to run from one coastguard station to the next with urgent messages, often in the dead of night. It was a frightening and very responsible job! Even as a boy, Fred had a good sense of humour, as when parading through Leicester with the Sea Scouts Band (he was a drummer), Fred could not resist removing his wrist straps so that he could throw
his drum sticks higher than everyone else! Unfortunately, they went too high and landed in the top of an open-air bus!! He was not popular with the band master, but it made everyone else laugh! Fred came to the village in 1928 with his wife Phyllis. He built a new bungalow for his family at 110, Main Street. Their daughter Janis was born in 1932. Between 1932 and 1940, he traded in partnership with a Mr Lancaster as ‘Lancaster and Clarke, Builders’. When they parted company, Fred formed his own building business, always taking great pride in his work and earning the phrase ‘belt, braces and a piece of string’ when people described the high standard of his work. When the Second World War came along, Fred, as a builder, was in a reserved occupation, but in addition to this he joined the Air Raid Protection Warden’s Unit. He became an integral part of the group of men and women who manned the report centres throughout the war, protecting our village. He was based at the depot in the Old School House, where he was Head Warden and was on duty the night the village was bombed, in November 1940. His daughter tells us that Fred, and many others like him, worked all day, came home, quickly ate their evening meal and then put on the A.R.P. uniform, tin hat and haversack and went out into the night, often to stay out all night. Around 1946, Fred bought a large swath of building land from Wathes’ Farm. He envisaged building an estate of mixed
houses and bungalows with large gardens and a pleasant aspect. However, this eventually became the cul-desac known as Vicarage Close. He built a bungalow on the Close for his family and this eventually passed on to his daughter and her husband. He built many of the houses and bungalows on Vicarage Close and also other houses in different parts of the village. Fred had a very active part in the village community, being named on many Kirby Players’ programmes as ‘scenery maker’ and in charge of stage make-up, at one time perfecting the art of a ‘black eye’ after much practice on his daughter’s face! He was very involved in the Kirby Muxloe Pageant in June 1953, again acting as stage manager. As a lifelong member of the Free Church, he not only helped to raise funds for rebuilding the new church after the bombing, but was also in charge of refurbishing the large hall used for services until the new Church had been built. Lastly but by no means least, he was one of the five builders who supervised the building of the Community Centre in 1948. A keen amateur photographer, Fred led a very busy and active life and was well known in the local community. The results of his building work are part of Kirby’s heritage today.

Phantom Debt Fraud Action Fraud has recently experienced an increase in the number of calls to members of the public by fraudsters requesting payments for a “phantom” debt. The fraud involves being cold-called by someone purporting to be a debt collector, bailiff or other type of enforcement agent. The fraudster may claim to be working under instruction of a court, business or other body and suggest they are recovering funds for a non-existent debt. The fraudsters are requesting payment, sometimes by bank transfer and if refused, they threaten to visit homes or workplaces in order to recover the supposed debt that is owed. In some cases, the victim is also threatened with arrest. From the reports Action Fraud has received, this type of fraud is presently occurring throughout the UK. It is important to recognise that there are key differences between the various entities who seek to settle debts or outstanding fees in England and Wales. These differences range from the type of debt they will enforce to the legal powers they possess. To learn more, please take a look at some of the helpful information and links on the Step Change Debt Charity website; https://www. stepchange.org/debt-info/debt-collection /bailiffs-and-debt-collectors-differences.aspx

Beyond 2031, the plan identifies the need for a further 90,500 dwellings and additional employment land, which is why further land needs to be unlocked. Local Plans will deal with the detailed allocation of which sites will be brought forward.

Protect Yourself • Make vigorous checks if you ever get a cold call. Bailiffs for example, should always be able to provide you with a case number and warrant number, along with their

name and the court they are calling from; make a note of all details provided to you. • If you receive a visit from a bailiff, they must always identify themselves as a Court Bailiff at the earliest possible opportunity. Ask to see their identity card which they must carry to prove who they are, this card shows their photograph and identity number. They will also carry the physical warrant showing the debt and endorsed with a court seal. • If you work for a business and receive a call or visit, be sure to speak with your manager or business owner first. Never pay the debts yourself on behalf of the business you work for; some fraudsters have suggested employees make payment suggesting they can then be reimbursed by their employer when in reality the debt is non-existent. • Exercise caution believing someone is genuine because you’ve found something on the internet; fraudsters could easily create fake online profiles to make you believe them. • Double check with the court, company or public body they claim to work for to confirm whether the call is legitimate; if you use a landline make sure you hear the dialling tone prior to dialling as the caller could still be on the line and you could potentially speak to the fraudster(s) to confirm the non-existent debt. Also be sure to independently search for a telephone
number to call; never use a number rovided by the caller without carrying out your own research. • Do not feel rushed or intimidated to make a decision based on a phone call. Take five and listen to your instincts. • If you know you have a debt, keep in regular contact with your creditor and be sure to establish the debt type at the earliest opportunity if you are not aware. This will help you to understand who might be in contact with you regarding any re payments or arrears. You can report suspicious calls like these to Action Fraud by visiting www.actionfaud. police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040. Apology I have received a complaint from a resident concerning my article in last month’s Local. It concerned the opening of Ratby Post Office. I apologise for any confusion, this was a statement from the Post Office. I Thought I had included that on the title. I sincerely apologise for my error. Clearly I did not intend to mislead residents into believing that it was the County Council or myself taking credit for the alterations. There was certainly no intention on my behalf to do that. Clearly the Post Office is run by the Post Office, I pride myself on keeping residents updated and that was just what I was trying to do.
I would like to thank residents for your continued support. Should you need my help or advice on any matter or issue, I pride myself on always making myself available to residents and getting straight back to you. Remember I am only a phone call or email away. Kind RegardsÂ

Environmental Improvement Programme The Borough Councils Environmental Improvement Programme consists of small scale improvement schemes across the whole Borough. The schemes attract a considerable amount of match funding in providing built environmental benefits. The projects can be stand alone, others contribute towards larger comprehensive schemes. Examples of the types of projects include restoration of churchyard tombs, repairs to walls and installation of heritage nameplates and lights. We are currently looking to identify potential projects for next years programme (2018 / 2019). As in previous years we are looking to work with Parish Councils on projects, so if you have any project ideas please let us know. It is important that the projects have a conservation/heritage relevance to be considered. Please let us know of any potential projects, with as much information as possible including any quotes, by Friday 2nd March 2018. Regards,
Daniel Britton

bring offenders to justice. As a partnership we can support by passing on crime prevention advice. We will be sending out prevention advice to Parishes and community groups and putting an article in the borough bulletin. I have attached the latest crime prevention leaflet from Leicestershire Police(hard copies of this are available on request.) Elderly scams – There have been an increased amount of scams across the county targeting the elderly. The link attached https://leics. police.uk/news-appeals/news/2018/01/10/ fake-police-scam-warning-issued shows the warnings police have been putting out to communities and they have also been working with banks who have protocols in place to help spot these types of scams and alert the police. Initiatives Engagement with young people – we have continued to deliver workshops to young people in both primary and secondary schools around topics such as good citizenship, anti-social behaviour, drugs and alcohol, healthy relationships, road safety and young driver safety. In the first three quarters of this year we have engaged with 1136 young people. In the next few weeks we are doing sessions in schools to find out what young people want the community safety partnership to focus on so that we can take their views into account when formulating plans. Friends Against Scams – this is a national trading standards initiative to get out messages about how to spot scams to members of the community. This is something that the team will be developing over the next few months. You can find out more at https://www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk/ but
I will provide further information around this work in future updates. Safer Internet – we will be sharing messages via social media about being respectful online and keeping yourself safe. We have also arranged to go into Hastings High School to deliver workshops to pupils to help keep them safe when using social media. We will also be doing some practitioner training during the following week. Campaigns- last quarter was busy with campaigns around hate crime, vehicle crime, seasonal Christmas Campaign and domestic abuse campaign. Domestic Abuse Literature all of our domestic abuse outreach service literature has just been updated including posters, leaflets and wallet sized cards. If you would like hard copies of any of these please contact denise.bonser@hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk Adaptations in the home Residents should be aware that HBBC often carry out adaptations to properties right across the Borough to help people stay in their own homes. This includes both private sector and social housing. The Lightbulb Project was set up to do this and although based at Blaby District Council, it is county wide. These adaptations are for the elderly, infirm, disabled and those with learning difficulties. Schemes are varied such as stairlifts, wheelchair lifts, ramps, handrails, hoists, door widening and wet rooms. Initially, the applicant will be assessed by an Occupational Therapist and then a referal made. Once a decision has been made, either HBBC or one of it's contractors will make arrangements to do the installation. If

KIRBY MUXLOE LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY HUB The Library continues to function well. We are gradually adding further activities to fulfil our intention to become a community hub, as well as a Library. As time progresses, we are anxious to develop the community aspect, and to that end we are wondering if any Kirby Muxloe residents have experience of community development and would like to help us on a voluntary basis with this side of our activity. We are thinking along the lines of using the Library to provide a warm and welcoming space where those who are lonely or isolated may like to meet to socialise and engage in activities such as playing board games or just meeting with others over a cup of tea or coffee.
Volunteers We have a very loyal group of volunteers and we have not as yet had any difficulty at all in covering the rotas. Many people have found volunteering to be a fulfilling and productive use of their time. New friendships have been formed and new skills acquired, to say nothing of the fun and laughter that a session in the Library normally generates. We need volunteers for all sorts of activities, not just staffing the Library counter. For example, there are opportunities to develop craft activities for children, run story sessions for pre-school children (including babies), helping with gardening and cleaning, helping with fund-raising and grant applications and so on and so on. If you are interested, come into the Library, talk to other volunteers, complete a volunteer application form, and have a chat with a member of the Steering Group.
18
Under fives can now join the Bookstart Bear Club. This encourages preschool children to visit the Library and take out books. Children are initially given their own free book, and can collect stickers for it on each of their first 10 visits. On each visit the children gain a paw print and after six visits they receive a certificate. Keen visitors can collect 10 certificates in total.
Free Helpful Computer Programmes We wrote last time about using the Ancestry and Find my Past computer programmes. A reminder that we also have a subscription to Which? a completely independent service providing unbiased advice to consumers about purchases they may wish to make, enabling informed decisions. This is free for you to use at the Library, and we have a full set of instructions alongside each computer to show you how to access the programme.
Two future events to note We will be holding a Dementia Awareness afternoon on a Saturday in May, as yet to be arranged. We hope to provide a speaker and information on how the public can help, with the opportunity for private discussion with support agencies and understanding of how to operate Power of Attorney. Secondly, we now have a definite date for the recording of Down to Earth for all those
with an interest in gardening, providing a unique opportunity to have all your questions answered by an expert panel. The recording is for Radio Leicester and will be hosted by Dave Andrews. The date is the evening of Thursday April 19th and tickets are now available in the Library. Wine and canapés will be available following the recording, when you will have a chance to chat informally with the experts. There is no charge but voluntary donations to the Library will be most welcome. You will need to submit your questions beforehand, and forms are available for these in the Library. We also have a Coffee Club on Friday mornings, from 10.30 – 12.00. Anyone can come and meet up with others over coffee, chocolate or tea - a nice social activity with the opportunity to make new friends. Don’t forget that we have an excellent meeting room for people to hire for their own meetings or activities, for a small donation. A reminder that we have our Coffee and Cake morning on the 4th Saturday of each month, so the date for the February one is Saturday 24th February. All are welcome.
And finally, a reminder of the Library opening times Mondays 10.00 – 1.00, 2.00 – 7.00 Tuesdays 2.00 – 5.00 Wednesdays 2.00 – 5.00 Fridays 10.00 – 1.00 Saturdays 10.00 – 1.00

Ratby Library with Crow Pie Cafe FORTHCOMING EVENTS Happy New Year This is very late I know but I have been out of action with illness since before Christmas and missed the opportunity to say this in January. Very pleased to say that I am recovering well and will be reporting for duty at the library soon. The Important thing to say is a big thankyou to all the volunteers who have rallied round to keep the library going in my absence. Not that I thought I was indispensable because I have always been able to rely on their help and support. Thanks everyone!
The Christmas Bazaar This went ahead as planned and was well attended and I was very disappointed to have missed it as the volunteers organised it so well and raised almost £200. There was a Bran Tub, Raffle, Tombola, Bric a Brac, Cakes, Face painting and Father Christmas made a flying visit as well. As a special treat a group of Hand Bell Ringers gave a performance of Christmas songs which was much appreciated by those present. Well done everybody.
Quiz Night Stephen Roche will, after a break around Christmas, continue with our monthly quiz on Friday 16th February at 7.00 pm
Book Club Wendy Deeping will host the February Book Club on 19th February at 7.30pm. and the book for discussion is, ‘In the Place of Fallen Leaves’ by Tim Pears.
Volunteers As ever there is a continuing call for more volunteers. We have had 2 joining us over the past months but for various reason several have left albeit temporarily. Did you make a New Year’s resolution to do something different this year? Well why not come and join us? They are a great bunch to work with and the customers appreciate what we are doing for them.
FINANCIAL INCOME The Crow Pie Café As I have said before we are soon to be totally
responsible for financing the building which is the reason for the Café. It provides a good opportunity to; meet friends, have a rest while walking from the shops to the top of the village, or bring the children for a treat when they have been good.
Donated books We have an excellent selection of books donated by customers. These can be taken away for a small donation.
Parking Although the car park is provided for our customers we see it being used; for the school run, going to the shops or visiting the chip shop. While this is in no way an invitation to use the car park there is a box for donations in the chip shop and some people use the café to acknowledge their use of it. We do have the financial up keep of the car park to find as well as of the building. Your help will be much appreciated. If you want to help in any way, please give me a call on 07720542295

At their peak in 1835 there were believed to be 152 mills in Leicestershire, and many were locally such as Woodhouse Eaves, Markfield, Mountsorrel, Shepshed etc. Mark has tried to gather together all the photographic images that have survived and has also made a collection of milling stories. He knows of the existence of many mills but as far as he knows their images have been lost.

THIS SPRING will see the return of the UK’s muddiest fundraising event for little ones – Peppa Pig’s Muddy Puddle Walk for Save the Children.
Last year saw 160,000 children across the UK take part, raising an incredible ÂŁ243,000 for Save the Children’s vital work, and this year the charity hopes even more people will sign up, take part and donate. Between 23 and 29 April 2018, nurseries, early years groups, families and children up and down the country are being encouraged to take part in a Muddy Puddle Walk to raise money for the international children’s charity. Organising a Muddy Puddle Walk is a great way for your little ones to explore the world around them and jump in muddy puddles, like Entertainment One’s Peppa Pig, for a worthy cause. Whether you splash in puddles along a trail at the park or get creative and make your own puddles indoors from paper and foil – your Muddy Puddle Walk will be a fun day to spend together that littles ones won’t forget. Raise funds in the way that suits you – help walkers get sponsored for their walk, ask for a donation to take part or even bake Muddy Puddle cupcakes to sell on the day! The money you raise will help Save the Children’s work to transform the lives of vulnerable children in the UK and around the world. Sophie Pirouet, Fundraising Campaigns Manager at Save the Children, says: “We hope everyone will get outside this Spring, come rain or shine, and help raise much needed funds for Save the Children. It’s so easy to take part and it’s the perfect excuse to explore the outdoors with your little ones. By jumping in muddy puddles like Peppa Pig and raising money for Save the Children you can help give children a brighter future.â€? By taking part in a Muddy Puddle Walk and raising money for Save the Children, you can help vulnerable children around the world have a safe place to play and learn. Sign up now at MuddyPuddleWalk.org for your free Muddy Puddle Walk Fundraising Pack full of fun Peppa Pig inspired activities to help you get started – with tips for great walks indoors and out, fundraising ideas, fun activities to get your walkers ready for the big day and at the end of the walk, there’s a free Peppa Pig sticker reward for every child. The fundraising pack will also explain what life is like for children in different countries, helping them see how they are making a difference through supporting Save the Children.

BROOKVALE GROBY LEARNING CAMPUS STUDENTS VISIT ICELAND! 40 Year 8/9 students and 5 members of staff had a fantastic adventure w/c 22 January by visiting ICELAND! Iceland offered the opportunity for students to study glaciers, hot springs and geysers, volcanoes, lava flows, ash deserts, mighty rivers, thundering waterfalls and stunning coastlines. This trip supported our Year 8 units on ‘Tectonic Hazards’ and ‘Renewable Energy’ and any student considering taking geography for GCSE. Below are some of the fantastic views and scenery.
The Baldwin Trust - Fancy A Boat Trip? Looking To Volunteer? Or Want To Help Donate? Our charity has been operating since 1983. We operate two 70foot narrow boats on the canals and river system throughout Leicestershire. The Trust is completely manned by 45 volunteers. We were awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services in 2010. The mission of our trust is to enhance the wellbeing for people of all ages, especially those living with disabilities, mental illness or social exclusion or isolation. The boat trips provided by the Trust can provide learning and recreational opportunities to disadvantaged or isolated people and their carers which will allow them to maintain a healthy lifestyle or discover new experiences or gain skills. This in turn can improve the quality of their life opportunities. Our two narrow boats are very old. St. Clare was built in 1988 and Dandelion (we think) in 1980. During the last 6 months, mechanical failures have resulted in the cancellation of approximately 35-day trips booked by our service users. This equates to over 400 individuals who were not able to enjoy a day in the fresh air, on the water and accordingly, they would have remained in their care homes or normal accommodation. The condition of the boats will lead to more breakdowns and the replacement of one or more boats is the only option that we have. The age of the boats is now meaning that spare parts are not readily available thus increasing the amount of non-operational activity and expense as alternatives have to be sought.

within Leicestershire and Rutland or close by. We have served a variety of different organisations, mainly Care homes but also Autistic and Asperger’s organisation, “HITS homeless teenagers, AGE UK, Women’s Institutes and a variety of centres for the physically and mentally disadvantaged including “Headway and LCC Child Protection homes. By the end of October 2017, we will have expected to carry more than 1700 people from in and around Leicestershire and environs on 160 trips. We hope that you can see that we do “make a difference to people’s lives. At least 70% of our groups contain one or more wheelchair users. Our volunteers are desperately trying to raise funds to place an order for a new boat. Our project is called “Put a foot in the water for the Baldwin Trust. Even if we can raise the necessary funding in the next 3 months to place an order, we will not get our new boat until 2019. We have raised 50% of the required funds for the new boat and are applying for more grants and donations. We are also implementing a major refurbishment programme for the two existing boats because, if we fail to take action now, we believe that 2018 will see a continuing heavy drain on our
ageing boats operational thus, pushing the possibility of attaining our new boat further away from reality. Our vision is to operate 4 boats in all providing services to between 4,000-5,000 clients throughout Leicestershire and the surrounding counties. Age Concern UK (Leicester), states in their latest survey that there are over 1 million “lonely people in the UK and that 3.7 million - people live alone! It is not hard to see that this problem will grow and our believe is that with early, low level interventions from active community projects, such as The Baldwin Trust, will lessen the impact on health and well-being of isolation and exclusion for many.

HEALTHMATTERS The Month of Valentines and the National Heart Month As Valentine’s Day approaches near, everyone will be thinking with their heart, so I thought it appropriate to write an article on the heart and what we can do to keep it healthy. Your heart is a vital organ; it is basically a pump that keeps blood moving around your body. It delivers oxygen and nutrients to all parts of your body and carries away unwanted carbon dioxide and waste products. Each day your heart beats about 100,000 times, and pumps about 23,000 litres of blood around your body. It is amazing what it does without us even thinking about it. However with such an impressive pump, there are a number of things that can go wrong. I have listed a few below: Abnormal heart rhythms: - Your heart rhythm is controlled via electrical signals, when there is a problem with the electrical signals you may experience palpitations (where your heart beats abnormally fast, slow or irregular). Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common abnormal heart rhythms. Symptoms of AF can include an irregular pulse, tiredness, shortness of breath, dizziness, feeling faint or palpitations. AF is one of the main causes of strokes (where a blood clot reaches the brain.) This is because as your heart is pumping inefficiently; it can cause a pooling of blood at the bottom of the heart which can then clot. When this happens the clot can travel to different parts of the body. If it reaches the brain you can potentially have a stroke. If you feel that you have any of the above symptoms you should see your GP. Angina: - This is pain felt in the chest often described as tightness; it can be brought on by a number of things such as physical activity or emotional upset. Angina can be caused by Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). This is when your coronary arteries (the arteries that supply your heart muscle with oxygen-rich blood) become narrowed by a gradual build-up of fatty material within their walls. When there is a large build-up of fatty material it causes a strain on your heart when pumping blood around the body. This leads to symptoms such as tightening of the chest. If you have not been diagnosed with angina and you have these symptoms along with pain in your arms, throat, neck or jaw, you should stop what you’re doing and rest and if you are not allergic to aspirin, you should take 300mg and call 999 for an ambulance as you may be having a Heart Attack High blood pressure or hypertension – means that your blood pressure is constantly higher than the recommended level. High blood pressure is not usually something that you can feel or notice, but over
26
time if it is not treated, your heart may become enlarged making your heart pump less effectively, which could lead to heart failure. Having high blood pressure increases your chance of having a heart attack or stroke. This is why it is recommended that your blood pressure is well controlled. As many as 5 million people in the UK are walking around, undiagnosed, with high blood pressure.
LOVE YOUR HEART
Knowing how important your heart is and the things that can go wrong, it is vital to keep your heart healthy. There are a number of small things that you can do. Keeping active and exercising regularly is fundamental. Remember it’s never too late to start. The recommended amount of moderate exercise/activity per week is a total of 150 minutes of per week. Another important aspect of keeping a healthy heart is a healthy diet. A healthy diet is a well-balanced diet and should include 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. You should keep an eye on the amount of fat in the diet and choose the right types of fat. You should cut down on saturated fats replacing them with small amounts of mono and polyunsaturated fats. You should cut down on foods containing trans fats and also reduce the overall amount of fat that is in your diet. If you drink alcohol, it is important to stay within the recommended guidelines. For men it is 3 to 4 units per day, and for women it is 2 to 3 units per day. Smoking is very unhealthy as it is a major contributor in clogging your arteries which puts a lot of strain on your heart. If you are smoking then you should stop. If you would like any information about anything mentioned above or get advice on diet and exercise, The Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe is happy to help, just walk in or call us on 0116 2387353.
