Cut-price compost bins available for Leicestershire residents AS THE TIDYING-UP of gardens starts apace across Leicestershire, residents are being encouraged to compost their garden waste. Each year, Leicestershire residents produce more than 300,000 tonnes of rubbish and recyclables. Around 22 per cent of which is uncooked fruit, vegetables and garden waste that could have been composted rather than binned. To help, we are currently offering cut-price compost bins to help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. Councillor Blake Pain, cabinet member for waste management, said: “Spring is usually the ideal time for people to start mowing their lawns, trimming hedges and pruning shrubs. “Composting is a great way to feed your garden, it is better for the environment and, if you’re normally a compost buyer, you’ll also be saving money.” Compostable items include fruit and vegetable peelings, grass cuttings, coffee grounds, tea leaves, newspapers and cardboard boxes which will all decompose in a matter of months. The resulting compost can then be dug back into the garden to provide nutritious soil for budding crops. Leicestershire residents can pick up a compost bin at a subsidised price, from only £10.98. The bins are made from recycled plastic, adding to their environmental credentials. For more details or to order a home composter visit www.getcomposting.comOpens another website in new window or call 0844 571 4444. Residents can also call on the support of a Master Composter, volunteers who use their own skills and enthusiasm to raise awareness of the benefits of home composting, including how it can reduce the amount of organic waste sent to landfill.

Watermead Challenge 2018 Wreake Valley and Syston Rotary Clubs are holding the eighth Watermead Challenge charity run at Watermead Country Park on Tuesday 3rd July 2018. The fairly flat three and five mile course around the park’s attractive lakes offers experienced and novice runners the opportunity to set a personal best time. Full details of how to enter can be found at www.wreakevalleyrotary.org.uk. Chris Battye, Race Director commented: “last year we had nearly five hundred entries for this popular event. This year’s proceeds will be shared amongst three charities: Dementia UK, Leicestershire Childrens Holiday Centre and HCPT pilgrimage holidays. Venue restrictions mean numbers are limited to 500. Please enter early to avoid disappointment.”

KIRBY MUXLOE WI On Tuesday 24th April Kirby Muxloe WI hosted the WI’s Forest Group Meeting at St Bartholomew’s Church Hall. The Group consists of Ratby, Botcheson, Newbold Verdon, Glenfield and Glenfield Park WI’s’ They meet 3 times a year, taking it in turns to play host. The meeting was opened by our President Jane Boobyer who after “business” introduced the speaker for the evening, Sue Drage “Recycling with a Difference” and what an amazing difference she made to everyday articles. Sue was able to turn a “sow’s ear into a silk purse” if you’ll excuse the pun. Sue started her crafting by making cards soon progressing to making various fun sized bags out of crisp packets, plastic carrier bags and a glue gun, before moving on to book art, jewellery, furniture and much more. Sue told how after being interviewed on Radio Coventry she was asked to knit a Space Suit for a Chicken out of recyclable materials which was eventually used by NASA and sent into space. She showed how it was possible using the simplest everyday items and turn them into things that were both pretty and practical.

Kirby Muxloe Bowls Club Once again, the outdoor season is upon us. After another good season, 2016/2017 with plenty of bowling on offer, for new and novice bowlers, and experienced bowlers are very welcome. We have open evenings every Wednesday from 5.30pm onwards, subject to the weather, free coaching is available. As time goes on by and catches up with us we would like to strengthen our Ladies and Gentlemen teams. We are considered one of Leicestershire’s Premier Clubs with a very successful social evenings and events. Novices and new bowlers can play without fuss for their 1st season, so come down and have a try.

A plastic chair made from water bottles which was strong enough to sit on and the “Theresa May” necklace made from ring pulls were two of my favourites. Sue made tea lights from drinks cans and table lights from plastic spoons, her inventiveness was endless. Sue also goes into schools to demonstrate to the children how they too can recycle and have fun knitting with plastic bags, make bags from folded newspaper and cellotape and jewellery from paper clips and hair grips. She enjoys sharing her knowledge and skills and always has an open mind ready to discover the next thing. After this very inspiring talk we were able to give the articles a closer look and purchase some of the items which were on display. I will never look at a crisp packet in the same way again. This was followed by refreshments and a fabulous sharing supper which was provided by all the members.

Kirby Muxloe Bowls Club can be found at the rear of the Community Centre next to the Library.

Latest News Fr Frrom... om... Be Littter ter F Free And Live A More Animal Friendly Lifestyle There has been a lot in the media in recent months regarding litter and, more particularly, the large quantities of plastics in our seas. Litttter of any sort is unsightly but it has now been acknowledged that it is dangerous, not only to us humans but to the wildlife and animals who share our world. Although this is an issue that should be solved with world governments working together, locally individuals can bring about greater and more immediate changes to their environment. If we all refrained from discarding unwanted items wherever we happen to be, then there would be a marked difffer ference in our local environment. Now I’m not for one minute saying that anyone reading this artticle is a litterer - but this litter comes from somewhere. I have never really wanted to get into the mind of people who treat our world with such indifffer ference – that’s a dangerous place to go – but how can people simply thrown their litter where they are instead of taking it home to discard properly? This unsightly mess lefftt in our beauty be spots is a potential hazard for wildlife. I was speaking to someone the other day who told me about a sparrow pulling at a piece of plastic, as it gathered nesting materials. Wa atching BBC Blue Planet 2 series

we can see this on the clifffsides fsides where young seabirds in their nests are surrounded by our waste materials, some clearly entangled. If we all took a greater pride in our environment, animals wouldn’t sufffer: fer: The shy, unassuming hedgehogs that become entangled in the plastic can holders offten ten aren’t ar found early so have sufffer fered before they can be helped. The ducks and swans along line and hooks embedded in wounds, struggling to survive, are equally hard to catch in time. The broken glass lefftt indiscrimina indiscriminately causes untold damage to paws and, when harm and kill greater numbers of wildlife. All of this is avoidable if we all disposed of our waste with more care. The propensity to litter takes on an altogether more concerning to dump their accumulated rubbish indiscriminately in beauty spots, grass verges and in farm gateways. Is it laziness? If not, what is it? Recycle whatever you can. Many years ago, spurred on by a fabulous article in Gardeners’ World magazine, I built 4 “Buggingham Palaces with various groups of youngsters gsters using materials we gather hered from family and friends. These se items included odd bricks (whole hole or otherwise), tiles, stoness and broken terracotta pots, 3 pallets ts and then twigs and branches after er a bout of pruning. These “Palaces ces have

become much visited ited and used environments for frogs, fr toads, newts and all manner nner of minibeasts to shelter and nestt in. It is not just a means of tidying g and rrecycling but a way of ensuring ring there ther are habitats for a myriad iad of animals and creatures to thrive hrive in. Visitors to our garden are amazed at the way we have made e this feature fe and the signs of life fe in evidence around it. There arre 2 opportunities for members of the public to visit garden twice each h ye year in aid of the Woodside. The e bird box in our garden with a camera camer in it, is currently the focuss of frenetic nest building with the blue tit par parents gathering the cat fur f that we have placed into old birrd feeders for the birds to use. Have you put your cat ca fur collection out yet to help the birds? On another recycling ing note, with spring, comes spring ng cle cleaning and what better way than han to have a tidy at home and then take tak any items to a charity shop to o sell to rraise much-needed funds? ds? R Recycling on another level! We W have RSPCA Charity shops in Coalville, Wigston, Birstall and Melton n and we are ar always looking outt for quality castofffs. All the money y rraised through the charity shops, including the Gifftaid kindly signed ed up for by our supportters, comess to Woodside to help us to provide for the needs of the animals in our care. car Below, I’ve listed a few other ways tha that you can help the environment ent and animals.

• Unwanted giffts ts are ar always appreciated by us at Woodside as prizes for the tombolas we hold to raise funds. • Any coins, even foreign money, can be cashed in by Woodside adding extra funds to help the animals. • Make sure that no one in your family ever drops litter. Can you start a compost bin for your vegetable waste? • Recycle your old towels and blankets - bring them to Woodside so that we can use it as bedding for the animals in our care. • Check that your cosmetics, shower and bath care items and household cleaning items are animal friendly – and that the bottles are recyclable! • Visit one of our charity shops to increase our sales, and ultimately our funds. • Look after the wildlife in your garden – make sure that your garden is litter-free and as animal friendly as possible. Lubbesthorpe School Plans Approved The first primary school in New Lubbesthorpe has been approved, with construction set to begin in June. Blaby District Council approved plans submitted by the Drummond Estate to construct a 420-place, two-form entry primary school required as part of the Section 106 Agreement earlier this month. The school will be built close to the current development of homes by Beggars Lane and is close to the local centre, which will include shops and other facilities. Is it anticipated to open by September 2019 based on the current dwelling occupation rate at Lubbesthorpe. Once completed, Lubbesthorpe will contain 4,250 homes, as well as a further primary school and a secondary school to be built as the development progresses. Local shops, parks, leisure facilities and industrial units are also planned for the new settlement. Cat Hartley, Group Manager for Planning, Economic and Community Development, said: “We’re pleased to be able to approve these plans for the first primary school in Lubbesthorpe. The development is growing at a rapid rate and by the time the school is completed we expect the first intake of pupils will be ready. “This also highlights that the infrastructure promised during the application phase is being delivered, which will make Lubbesthorpe a highly desirable and sustainable development.” For more information about Lubbesthorpe and to find planning applications about the development, visit www.blaby.gov.uk/planning.

KIRBY MUXLOE LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY HUB In celebration of Spring, our Library hosted a recording of Down to Earth on 19th April, which was a great success. In addition to the BBC Radio Leicester team, we had some 50 villagers ready with their gardening questions. We had to convert the Library rapidly to a space suitable for holding these numbers. In the event, it looked great and we have been encouraged to see how flexibly we can use the excellent accommodation that we have. Many thanks to BBC Radio Leicester for their friendly and professional approach, to villagers for coming up with so many questions and to our volunteers who made the whole thing such a success. Thanks too to the Bowls Club for helping out with comfortable chairs. Another big success was the Spring Book Sale held at the end of the month. We have received so many donations of books that we could no longer store them. The vast majority of the books are in excellent condition, and we have taken some to add to the LCC book stock. WE had huge numbers of visitors buying books and taking advantage of the coffee and cakes provided.

field, bordered by a large, tall hedge. The land now holding Enterprise House belonged to the first house on the right- hand side of Fox Lane, named Thorntree Cottage. The owners of the house, at that time, decided to sell off a large piece of their land, thus creating a vacant space for a building large enough to hold four retail units with accommodation above. The design of the building was very much in keeping with the style of the moment, flat fronted shops with a flat roof above. The occupants had many years of problems with the flat roof and eventually it was removed. The building now has a pitched roof. The shop units were soon occupied. Unit 1 became home to N. Crane, drapers. They sold a variety of goods including “Ladybird” children’s clothes. By 1972, the unit was taken over by Youngs’ shoe shop. They sold a variety of shoes and also took in repairs, which were then passed onto a cobbler in Ratby. After the shop closed in the late ‘70’s, the unit was possibly taken over by a bakery selling bread and cakes (we are not sure about this and need your help). Later on, the unit became home to the Alliance and Leicester Building Society which, after a take-over in 1980, became Santander. In the last couple of years the unit has been home to Scotneys, a Letting Agent and Brooks Residential, an estate agent. In Unit 2 between 1963 until 1966, we find a butcher with the name of R.V. Wells. He was succeeded by another butcher, D.C. Barker who stayed until 1972. Then followed our last village butcher the well-remembered Tony Doolan and his wife, Sue, who ran the shop until 2004. Our first village delicatessen, run by Mike Cooling, opened as Doolan’s butchers shop closed. After three years the deli’ was taken over by Sandra and Alan Hill and then in the last few years Sarah Flavell. The

delicatessen has grown over time and is now a thriving concern with a much beloved coffee shop! We then arrive at Unit 3. It is known that Nicholson’s, who sold groceries and fruit and veg, occupied the space in the 1960’s. Hartleys, who were already established further along Main Street, bought Nicholsons out and moved their pet and garden shop into unit 3. At the same time, they expanded the larger Hartleys grocery and provisions shop. This shop was run by the well-known Gerry Hurst, who still lives in the village today. After 3-4 years, Hartleys decided to close the pet shop and the unit was taken over by a clothing shop run by Mr and Mrs Bowles from Botcheston. Sadly, Mrs Bowles became ill and the shop closed. It is thought that the first pharmacy unit then arrived in around 2000. In 2006, new owners took it over and created the very popular “Village Pharmacy” which we still have today. Unit 4 was firstly occupied by Renee, a lady’s hairdresser who stayed until around 1972, when the shop became The House of Hillikere run by David Briggs. Many people will remember the rows of hairdryers and ladies sitting with rollers in their hair and of course perms, all very popular until the advent of the blow- dry in the1990’s. In 2006, David retired and the shop was taken over by Kool for Kuts, which still remains today. If you have any extra information about the shops in Enterprise House please get in touch with either Judith or Mike. With many thanks to David Briggs and Gerry Hurst for help with this article.

Enterprise House This time we take a look at Enterprise House on Main Street, built in the early 1960’s. In 1936, the total number of houses in the village amounted to 746, by the early 1960’s the total number of dwellings had risen to 1,420. This dramatic increase was mainly due to the building of the Jelson estate (Armson Avenue, Garfit Road etc.), the council bungalows in The Keep and the large Masters and Titmus development (Maytree Drive, Cherry Tree Avenue etc.). These were all built between the mid to late ‘50’s and the early ‘60’s. With the large increase of houses and inhabitants, the village was in need of a variety of new and different shops. Until around 1962, the area between Fox Lane and Battens (now One Stop) had been mainly

Leicestershire’s Adult Learning Strategy Consultation We want to hear your views on the draft strategy for Leicestershire’s Adult Learning Service 2018-22. Leicestershire Adult Learning Service (LALS) is an adult and community learning provider that operates across the county. It aims to support people and communities to develop and engage in learning programmes that meet their needs. It does this by offering a range of accredited and non-accredited learning programmes across over 100 community venues such as

It also offers programmes that help to build up people’s confidence to be more ambitious in their learning which can be done in a family group or on an individual basis. LALS programmes support people to learn new skills and therefore help their job prospects as they move through life. The strategy, which is called 'Realising Potential', sets out a vision for the service in the future and how it intends to meet its objectives in supporting people to feel confident about learning, achieve their goals and therefore improve their well-being. We’d like to hear from you if you have any comments on our vision and the draft strategy for our service. For example, we’d like to know: • Do you think our vision ‘To inspire and support the people of Leicestershire to improve their lives through lifelong learning’ is right? • The strategy shows how it links into a number of other strategies across the County, particularly Leicestershire County Council’s strategic plan. Do you think that this proposed strategic approach is appropriate for the service? • The strategy shows how it aims to plan its activity to achieve outcomes for a Strong Economy, Wellbeing and Opportunity, Keeping people safe, and building Great Communities. Do you agree with how LALS plans to organise its activity around these outcomes? What impact, if any, would there be on you and your use of the service? Is there anything else you would like to see reflected in our strategy? The consultation runs

from 3 April to 31 May 2018. To take part in the consultation, read the draft strategy by following link below: https://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/have-yoursay/current-consultations/leicestershiresadult-learning-strategy Email your responses to LALS.consultation@leics.gov.uk Or write to: Nigel Thomas, Head of Service Communities and Wellbeing Leicestershire County Council Room 600, County Hall Glenfield, Leicester, LE3 8RL

Proposed changes to CareOnLine Have your say on proposed changes to CareOnLine, which offers training and technical support for people who need help to get online. As part of the council's budget plans for the next four years we have identified some potential savings within the council’s CareOnLine service. CareOnLine offers training and technical support, as well as some devices and software, to people who need help to get online. This service costs more than £100,000 per year to run and supports around 350 people. We are proposing to stop CareOnLine and use more cost effective ways of supporting people to get familiar with online services. The Council wants to hear your views on the proposals. Deadline for responses is 22 May 2018. You can download and read the summary of proposed changes by following the link below. Then complete the online survey. https://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/have-yoursay/current-consultations/proposedchanges-to-careonline The Council will collate all the feedback we receive and prepare options for the council’s Cabinet to consider.

The final decision will be made by Cabinet later this year.

Consultation on passenger transport policy & strategy We want your views as we look to shape a new passenger transport policy and strategy. The county council continues to face significant financial challenges with budget plans recently announced to save another £50m across all areas of the council. One of the ways to make the best use of money available is to ensure passenger transport services best meet the essential transport needs of people in attending health appointments, making shopping trips and, in some cases, into employment. We're consulting over the next 12 weeks on a new passenger transport policy and strategy which will help to ensure we meet our statutory duties, while achieving the best use of money in supporting local passenger transport services. The findings of the consultation will be reported back to Cabinet at a later date. The consultation runs to midnight on 13 June. Please read the information document then after you have read the information document, please continue to the online survey. You can read the document and also download easy read versions of the document by following the link below https://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/have-yoursay/current-consultations/consultation-onpassenger-transport-policy-strategy For paper copies, further enquiries, and to leave any comments additional to the on-line survey, please call 0116 305 0002 or email ptps@leics.gov.uk

Residents know that I work closely with the police and Trading Standards so that I can update you on the current scams. A Message Received From Leicestershire police Con artists posing as police officers talked two elderly people into handing over thousands of pounds in cash.

The men contacted their targets by phone this week, identified themselves as police officers and warned them cash had been fraudulently withdrawn from their bank accounts, Leicestershire Police said. They then told the victims to withdraw thousands of pounds from their accounts so the notes could be ‘checked’ by officers investigating the fraud. One of the fraudsters travelled to the victims’ homes to collect the cash, saying it would be taken away for analysis. Leicestershire Police said the victims live in Leicester and Burton on the Wolds, near Loughborough and they were targeted yesterday and Wednesday.

Groby Wine Circle

Lightbulb marks successful first six months

Groby Wine Circle is a very sociable group which usually meets on the third Monday of the month at Groby Community College. Speakers are invited to give talks on a variety of interesting topics after which there is a chance to catch up socially over a drink with a cheese and French bread.

Over 2,300 from across Leicestershire have been helped to remain independent in their own home thanks to the work of the award winning Lightbulb Project.

Throughout the year we organise fun nights out such as skittles, quiz nights, meals out and visits, etc. Our March meeting was held on Monday 19th when a Julie Ede gave us a wonderful talk on the life and times of “Queen Eleanor of Castilleâ€? (1241 – 1290). She was an English queen, the first wife of Edward I whom she married as part of a political deal to affirm English sovereignty over Gascony. The marriage was known to be particularly close, and Eleanor travelled extensively with Edward. She was with him on the 9th when he was wounded at Acre, but the popular story of her saving his life by sucking out the poison has long been discredited. When she died, near Lincoln, her husband famously ordered a stone cross to be erected at each stopping-place on the journey to London, ending at Charing Cross. On April 16th we were treated by Tony Noble, to an insight into the history and day to day running of the “Royal Yacht Britanniaâ€?. Tony, now retired, was in the navy (communications and signals) served on the yacht and toured many destinations with the Royals and other dignitaries. It was clear that he had a deep affection for his time aboard. The Royal Yacht went into service in 1954 but is now itself retired and a wonderful tourist attraction at Leith, Edinburgh. Future events and guest talks include: • Monday 14th May – A.G.M • Monday 18th June – Visit to a local brewery. We have a book sales table at each meeting where books can be purchased for a donation. All proceeds go to a local Leicester charity. If you feel you would be interested in coming along or would like more information about our Wine Circle please contact either: Dave Cooper (0116 2392844) or Robbie Grundy (0116 2393853).

The first six months of the partnership, hosted by Blaby District Council, has seen the project recognised with three awards due to its work in supporting vulnerable people. Leicestershire County Council, district councils, Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG's) and Leicestershire Partnership Trust make up the scheme’s other partners. Equipment in the homes of service users enables them to stay out of hospital by preventing accidents and falls. A reduction of just one fall for every 17 residents saves the local health and care economy ÂŁ21,000 per year. One service user who had a bath lift installed, said: “Thank you, a bath lift may seem such a simple thing, but it has made such a difference to my life!â€? Another service user said: “Thank you for the adaptations that you fitted at my 93 year old mother’s home, she has mobility issues and is a blue badge holder. “They have been a god send. It was really great to have all this sorted by one team and the Housing Support Coordinator who visited my mother sorted everything out.â€? Teresa Neal, Lightbulb Service Manager, said: “We are so proud of the huge amount of work we have undertaken in the first six months of Lightbulb. From providing a perching stool to installing a stair lift, our team will do all they can to keep Leicestershire residents independent in their home. “Lightbulb has been recognised multiple times for the great partnership to get to this point. We hope this can be an inspiration for other authorities to follow our way of working to help residents in their local area.â€? Lightbulb’s other benefits have included a much reduced waiting time for housing adaptations, fewer people involved in each case and a vast reduction in delivery cost. Residents can find out more about help within their home by visiting www.leicestershire.gov.uk or call 0116 305 0004.

Borough Councillors Report Cllr Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394336 or 07808585825 Email: ozzyoshea@hotmail.com

Dear Residents, Changes to the refuse and recycling collections 2018. 1. New recycling collection system: April 2018 The majority of the caddies were successfully collected in March and have been sold as scrap for recycling for £27,000 which covered the costs of collection. The fully comingled blue lidded bin has been very well received by residents with only 1 formal complaint received. The social media releases were particularly successful with some posts being viewed by over 12,000 people. We are aware that there is a problem with the red ink on the bin lid stickers fading and we are working with the printer to resolve this and get the stickers replaced. 2. In house collection of dry recycling: 1 April 2018 This went very smoothly and the new staff have embraced working for HBBC very positively. The interim fleet and new disposal site are also working well. 3. Round changes: 11 June 2018 There are now 11% more houses in Hinckley and Bosworth than when the rounds were last reviewed in 2011, so we need to add an extra collection round to meet the increased number of bins which need to be emptied. As the new houses are randomly spread across the borough, and we need to collect each of the 3 different waste streams separately, the most efficient way to do this is to reorganise our collection days. 2 This gives us the opportunity to now collect each village as a whole and to keep whole villages on the same type of collection e.g. recycling or refuse. This removes a number of anomalies making it easier for residents. This will keep fuel and staff costs to a minimum. Approximately 70% of residents will have a day change. Residents should continue with

their current collection day until June 11. They can look up their current collection day on line at www.hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk/ collections, and new collection day from 25 May. The table below is the refuse collection pattern and is indicative only. Residents MUST check their own calendar as the arrangements for extra collections vary across the borough. There are 27 different versions of the calendar to accommodate all the extra collections and there are odd roads which may not fall by parish or village boundary, or between villages and may not follow. Round changes have already been communicated to residents through the Borough Bulletin, council tax bills and in the media. Social media posts have also started. Each resident will receive the following information direct to their home:• New collection calendar - direct mailed to all households in May. It is really important that residents check their calendar very carefully as this includes information on new collection days, extra collections and which colour bin to present.

recycling) Right day By 7am Put bins out for extra collections Some residents will not only change collection day but they may also change the order that bins are presented. For example they may have a refuse collection followed by a refuse collection whilst we transition to the new routes. Residents are also being reminded that bins must continue to be placed out by 7am on the day of collection. This is particularly important as the time when waste is collected is likely to change for many areas, even if the bin collection day hasn't changed. Due to the day changes, the first collection after Monday 11 June may be a few days more or less than the usual 14 days cycle. This will only be for the first collection and the 14 day collection cycle will return as normal subsequently. We have put in additional resource to mitigate this and minimise the inconvenience caused to residents. Ratby will continue to have collections on Mondays.

Fly Tipping in the Borough. A new campaign to stop people illegally dumping their rubbish in Leicestershire has launched today.

• Borough bulletin summer edition May – more detailed information about changes to delivery days. To be delivered 2-3 weeks before changes start.

The #IfOnly campaign has seen councils across the city and county join forces to warn people that they face tough action if they are caught fly-tipping.

• Bin hanger on all black bins advising new day – 14-25 May

The consequences for their actions can range from a £400 fixed penalty notice to an unlimited fine, a criminal record or time in prison. Fly-tipping is a huge problem in Leicester and across each district in the county, with councils dealing with 12,000 incidents per year.

• Bin sticker on all black bins advising that collection days are changing and advertising large item collections – 28 May – 8 June. • The new look up calendar on line will be available from 25 May All communications focus on a residents to do list : Check calendar Right bin (refuse or

The new campaign focuses on the stories of four characters – based on real people who have been caught fly-tipping in the past.

The examples show that people can be caught for all sorts of reasons, from putting a fridge on the pavement to dumping bags by a local recycling bank. Residents can also be fined and prosecuted for using a dodgy trader who doesn’t have a waste licence and operates door-to-door. Blake Pain, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “I’m pleased that all of the Leicestershire councils are working together in partnership to tackle this issue. It’s a blight on our environment and costs tax-payers’ money to sort out. “Deterring people from fly-tipping is important and we provide a number of ways for waste to be disposed. However, if your waste is dumped inappropriately, either by you or someone you’ve given it to, you can be prosecuted and get a criminal record.” Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services at Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council (HBBC) Cllr Mark Nickerson, said: “Plastics, waste and how we manage our unusable or unwanted rubbish is high on everyone’s agenda at the moment – everyone will have seen the images on television and across social media. So we are pleased to be part of a part of a county wide campaign, with all the councils working together, to raise the profile of fly tipping. “The campaign posters say it all. You will be

caught and we will fine you. We issued 150 fines last year so please dispose of your waste responsibly. “At HBBC we offer a service, with a minimal charge (£15 for three items), where we will remove large items for residents, from beds and fridges to sheds. So don’t risk a £400 fine for the sake of £15. We have also recently changed our special waste collection service increasing what we accept. Both of these services should help residents with their rubbish/recycling and large scale waste.”

“This new campaign will help remind people that they have a responsibility to dispose of their waste safely and within the law, and that failure to do so could result in a hefty fine.” People can visit the campaign website at www.lesswaste.org.uk/flytipping and follow the campaign on social media #IfOnly. Ratby Primary School News.... Sports Relief

Year 3 and 4 Church Visit

This year for Sports Relief, the children at Ratby completed the ‘Mile a Day’ challenge along side lots of other sporting challenges. Year 1 were also lucky enough to have the mayor of Hinckley & Bosworth join them for one of their daily miles. We were very lucky and had taster sessions with lots of different sports such as: basketball, table tennis, ultimate Frisbee, street dance, fitness bootcamp, curling and many more. Even Mrs Jones and Mr Baines got involved and completed different Joe Wicks workouts with the children! It was a brilliant week and we raised £847. 84p for a brilliant cause. Well done everyone!

As part of Year 3 and 4’s RE work, they visited Ratby Church on Thursday 22nd March. Reverend Bampton told pupils the Easter story in detail. He also pointed out various artefacts  around the Church which showed the story too. Pupils learnt a lot about what happened to Jesus and the significance of Easter to Christians.  Pupils thoughts about the visit to church:   “It was very interesting and we now know a lot about  Easter story.”            Jesus and the

School Council School Council are still spreading the message about cutting down on the amount of plastic we are using. We wrote our own assembly to show the whole school how we can make a  difference to our seas and oceans and the creatures that live there.  The important messages were:  • Use a refillable water bottle   • Take a reusable bag to the shops  • Don’t use straws in drinks.   We hope that all of the children in our 
