Blue Peter is 60 years old

Adventure with the Saltmine Theatre Company for a pre-Christmas pantomime called ‘Hark! A Nativity Story’.

SIX DECADES after Owen Reed, then the BBC’s head of children’s TV, first spied the blue and white flag hoisted by a ship as it set sail and decided he had found the name for the a new TV programme that was meant to be a voyage of discovery for the nation’s kids, everyone has a favourite Blue Peter memory.

Come and see the story of the first Christmas as you’ve never seen it before: Friday 21st December 2018 at 6:30pm Kirby Muxloe Free Church (LE9 2AN) Adults £7.50, Children/Concessions £4.50 Family £22 (2 adults, 2 children) Call: 0116 239 3173 - or email: tickets@kirbyfree.org

Whether it’s John Noakes dropping his trousers to reveal his bobsleigh bruises — and his wife’s underwear (he had, according to his own account, put on her pants by mistake having dressed in the dark) — or, Noakes again, clambering up Nelson’s Column wearing nothing for protection but a combat jacket and a pair of flares, or Valerie Singleton working her way through the national supply of sticky-back plastic or, most memorably, an incontinent elephant called Lulu.

At its peak, the show notched up eight million viewers an episode and received 1,000 letters a day from viewers, most of them after that most precious of small screen prizes, the Blue Peter badge. Of which there are, in fact, six types, from blue to gold (the highest award reserved for acts of remarkable courage — or for being David Beckham, JK Rowling or the Queen). The world’s longest-running children’s TV show — the 60th anniversary fell on 16 October 2018 — may no longer own the ratings, but its cultural significance remains unchallenged.

County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com

Loose Horses Ivanhoe Trail I have been contacted by several residents over the past few months more so the last couple of weeks reporting loose horses on the Ivanhoe Trail or even on Taverner Drive. These are traveller horses that come from the field between the A46 and M1 Bridge. I have contacted the owner on numerous occasions but just lately he has not been answering the phone or he says he is out the Country. The police have been called on several occasions quite rightly as they have been wondering on the highway. I am concerned there could be an accident so I have arranged for the anti-social behaviour manager to look at issuing a Community Protection Notice to the land owner and owner of the horses in order to secure the field. The land owner is shown as the Duke of Rutland, I have arranged for warning letters to be sent out.

Opening of New Permissive Cycleway between Kirby Road, Glenfield and Sacheverell Way, Groby I have been contacted by numerous residents asking why the New Footpath/Cycleway has not been opened. I have had officers contact a representative of Wilson Bowden Homes They have provided me with further information on the matter. David Wilson Homes and their onsite contractors, New Line Ltd, where planning to open the new cycleway in September and work was well underway to complete the path for this target.

However, the developers were obliged to enter into a Highways Act 278 Agreement with the County Council from the outset because part of the scheme involved improving the old farm gateway with a new hard standing to provide a safe pausing point for cyclists and pedestrians before crossing Sacheverell Way. Part of the 278 Agreement revolved around surface run off drainage issues and I’m led to believe that work was then suspended on completing the new cycleway at the Sacheverell Way end while the issue of drainage works was negotiated between the developers and the Council. David Wilson Homes did consider opening up the pathway for public use without completing approvals under the Section 278 Agreement as there is I am told, still the old farm track entrance where cyclists and walkers could safely wait for a safe moment to cross the road. However in the final analysis they chose not to do so as it was felt that if, in the unlikely event that someone did come to harm crossing the road, it might have appeared a little rash of the developers to invite members of the public to use the new path when the Section 278 Agreement had still not been approved/finalised. I am given to understand that the 278 Agreement is now very close to being signed off, and if it is, within the next two weeks or so, New Line will be asked to return to site and the path might then be completed in time for residents to walk or cycle off their mince pies. Of course it all depends on how quickly the County Council’s Legal Team and David Wilson’s Legal Team can sign off on the 278 Agreement. I have again emailed officers asking for the latest update as to where we are with the project.

Remembrance Sunday 100 Years. There But Not There

I would like to put on record my thanks to Ratby Parish Council for the way they have supported the historic event. They have made sure every lamp post along Groby Road, Main Street and Station Road Ratby has a poppy on. They have also had a Tommy positioned in the centre of the village at the junction of Station road and Desford Lane all purchased through the Royal British Legion. We are all proud of the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for our country to allow us the Freedom we all enjoy today.

Malicious and Suspicious Telephone Calls

Ozzy O’shea.

A number of County Council officers have been receiving calls from the public stating that they have received a phone call from their direct line number when in fact the officer has never called them in the first place. This is a phone scam that is using Leicestershire County Council and other public sector organisations' telephone numbers to contact members of the public – they do this by spoofing our phone numbers. This is being investigated by the police at a national level.

Renata performed for us last November at the inauguration of our new piano at Markfield Methodist Church. The recital was an evening few of us will forget. Renata was a student of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and thrilled the full house with her programme of Chopin and Liszt, producing a spontaneous standing ovation at the end. Quite simply, Renata was breath-taking, with a staggering technique and depth of musical maturity. Added to that was her lovely, gentle manner. We are extremely excited to be welcoming her back! ď ˆď€Żď€ąď€§ď€Šď€Źď€°ď ‰ď€Ąď Šď€şď €ď€Ąď ‹ď€˛ď …ď€Ťď€Šď€Śď Œď€şď€ťď€°ď€Ąď Šď ?ď Žď€Łď€Ąď ?ď ?ď€ąď€Žď …ď€Źď€Ľď€ąď€Źď€Ąď€˛ď€°ď ‘ď€Ąď ƒď€Žď€Śď€Źď€Ľď€Şď€Ąď€Žď …ď€Ąď€Žď€˛ď€Śď€Ą ď€˘ď€Šď€žď€°ď€Żď€Źď€Šď€Ąď€Žď€Śď€Ąď€ąď€Ľď€Şď€Şď€Ąď€ˇď€Ľď€Şď€ąď€Žď€Şď€¤ď€Ąď€Žď …ď€Ąď €ď€şď ?ď ’ď €ď€Ąď€żď “ď€żď ‚ď “ď€żď€Ąď€´ď€Ąď €ď ‚ď ď€şď€żď€Ąď€şď “ď€żď ’ď€ťď€şď€Ą

Please Note: our next meeting will be on Tuesday November 20th 2018. “Making the Connections”, an overview of Bradgate Park and recent investigations into its history. Speaker – from the Bradgate Park Trust. 2nd half, a short film of a visit to the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium in 2017. Speakers Beth and Roger Barrett, who attended the Service.

KIRBY MUXLOE WAR MEMORIAL AND MEMORIAL GARDENS

Not long after the end of WW1, most people felt that it was of great importance to erect a memorial dedicated to those of the village who fell in the war. The practice happened in most villages and in fact, there were only 52 Civil parishes in England and Wales where all the military personnel returned. On 10 June 1923, a striking Memorial Gateway was unveiled on Station Road, Kirby Muxloe. The gateway, together with 11 acres of playing fields, were dedicated “to the memory of those of the village who fought and fell for freedom and right”. The playing fields, or recreation ground as it became known, were formed out of fields originally known as Middle and Ley Closes. The ground was handed over to the Parish Council, who were to act as trustees and the land was to be free of all charges, including tithe tax and land tax. The gates were created out of Portland stone and engraved by Joseph Herbert Morcom, a resident of Kirby Muxloe and a well known stone engraver. The War Memorial gates are engraved with the names of those who fell during WW1. If you take a look at the pillars, you will notice that they are engraved with the years 1914-1919, not 1914-1918, in Roman numerals. It is not particularly unusual to find the year “1919” on War Memorials, because although we think of the end of WW1 as Armistice Day, on 11th November 1918, the Treaty of Versailles was not signed until 28th June 1919. Strictly, the end of the war did not come until it was declared by Parliament on

12

31st August 1921! Some War Memorials therefore bear the years 1914-1921. The Memorial Gates, made from ornamental wrought iron, were officially opened on June 10th 1923, by Colonel R.E. Martin, CMG TD DL, who then handed the keys to Dr C.C. Garfit, Chairman of the Parish Council. The opening service was accompanied by the combined choirs of the village and the Desford School Band, and was attended by many residents of the village, including the Scouts and Girl Guides. The Garden of Remembrance, which includes the Stone of Remembrance, was unveiled on 15th October 1933 by Colonel John Brown, CB CBE DSO TD JP DL. The Stone of Rembrance was again made from Portland Stone and engraved by Joseph Morcom. Originally, it held one plaque on the front, engraved with the names of men who fell in WW1. Later, two more plaques were added to the sides of the memorial and inscribed with the 24 names of those of the village who fell in WW11. In 2008, all the plaques were renovated. The 24 names from WW2 were placed on a plaque on the left side of the memorial and a plaque on the right side was added bearing two names, one of a soldier who fell in the Korean conflict in 1951, and the other of a soldier who fell in the Iraq conflict of 2007. The Memorial Gates and the Stone of Remembrance have recently been listed as Grade 2, by Historic England ( List entry number 1445821). Fast forward to 1973, when the Parish Council received a letter from the County Council. At the time, the village library was held in St Bartholomew’s Church Hall and was not

really open for sufficient hours to service a village the size of Kirby Muxloe. As a new library for the village had been proposed, it was suggested that the War Memorial and its surrounding gardens should be incorporated into the plan, naming the new library: Kirby Muxloe Memorial Library. The Parish Council felt that it must consult not only the British Legion, but also the parishoners, as this was a large undertaking and required much consideration. Initially many people seemed to be in agreement with the proposal, partly because the village badly needed a better library and also few people could get to view the Stone of Remembrance, as at the time, the only access was through the Memorial Gates, which were often locked. However, it appeared that if the plan were to go ahead the Memorial Gates would have to be demolished. After much discussion, the idea was abandoned. Later on in the 1970’s, a wooden building was erected on the site of the present library. This was the first purpose-built library for the village. In 1995, a plan to redesign the Memorial Gardens was put forward by the Parish Council. The design was quite different and as it neared completion, the ground was planted with 1,000 crocuses, planted in group of 3 or more. The wooden library building was replaced by a brick built library in 2006 and now, since 2017 the library has been efficiently run by a large group of volunteers.

The Unveiling and Opening of the War Memorial Gates on Station road, Kirby Muxloe. Date June 10, 1923.

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group next meeting will be on Tuesday November 20th 2018. “Making the Connections”

Hundreds supported to quit smoking for Stoptober        people   kick  the  habit   In-house service helps

More than 300 people in Leicestershire attempted to ditch the cigarettes during last month’s Stoptober challenge. Figures show a total of 332 people were supported by our in-house QuitReady service. We are delighted that more than 300 Leicestershire residents took part in Stoptober as kicking the habit can be difficult. “Sadly, smoking is still a leading cause of premature death, which is why we would encourage people to sign up to our free service. Councillor Pam Posnett, cabinet member for health and wellbeing Evidence shows that people who quit for 28-days, are five times more likely to stop smoking for good. However, QuitReady advisors say that the first 12 months as an ex-smoker may still present challenges and have issued some top tips to stay smoke free: Remind yourself of the reasons you decided to quit in the first place; • Make a list of all the good things quitting smoking has given you so far; • Keep busy and if you want to smoke, distract yourself – cravings shouldn’t last for more than five minutes; • The support of friends and family can be vital – tell them that you are determined to quit for good and let them know how they can help you; • Staying smoke free is a big achievement. So whether you buy yourself something special with the money you have saved, or go out for a meal with friends, make sure you treat yourself. You can contact QuitReady for stop smoking advice and support, including free stop smoking medication and E-Cigarette starter kits with follow on nicotine liquids, by calling 0345 646 66 66, texting 'ready' to 66777 or visiting: www.quitready.co.uk

Latest News from Ratby Sports Club Hello All I hope everyone are coping with the dip in temperature we have experienced over the last few weeks it’s definitely a top coat cooler! Things have been a little up and down at the club since the last edition of the Local, we have had some great entertainment in the form of the Amy Winehouse tribute and the Elvis tribute act was an unbelievable success we will definitely be inviting him back, proof that 41 years after the King died his music is still loved by so many, the night was attended by such a wide range of ages it was great to see. We have also had some big parties, a double 50th and a 30th birthday parties which were really good nights and went down a storm with everyone having a good time. We are sorry to announce that Jackie CastleVernon has left for pastures new, Jackie has been a valuable member of staff for around 12 months now and I know she is popular with the customers, she will be sorely missed and I would like to thank her and wish her well. On a brighter note Jade has finally given birth to a baby boy Luca weighing in at 7lbs mother and baby are doing well and I would like to send my best wishes to Jade, Kris and Mason and wish them every happiness with their new family.

our heads above water. When I took over some 12 months ago now I knew the club was having difficult times and certain sections of the club were not in a healthy state, I must admit I had no idea just how bad things were and I would be the first to admit I went in to the role blind. It has took me an awful long time to get to the bottom of the problems that the club has been put in but I can say now that things have become much clearer and the club I believe is moving slowly in the right direction. The Sports Club is a non profit organisation and we are here primarily to provide facilities for the community, be it sport or leisure, we currently have Cricket junior and senior sections, Football junior and senior sections, 2 pool teams an archery section and the facilities are used in the week by Slimmer’s world, Zumba class, Mature Movers group and a junior kick boxing group the Ratby Ninjas we are constantly looking for more groups and more sports to come and join us, the facilities are her for us all to use so lets use them, it would be great to get more sports using the facilities, please contact me if you are interested in starting a team or introducing a new sport at the club.

A date for your diary.. Friday 16th November The Heatwaves Soul and Motown duo FREE ENTRY should be a great night.

I don’t see us as competition for anyone, we are not a pub we are not a wine bar we are not a restaurant we are a sports club....the clue is in the title! I know that there has been a couple of instances when we have run out of certain beers on a very busy night and this does look very unprofessional and is embarrassing but people need to understand that the club is tied in to an absolutely ridicules’ contract with the brewery which makes it virtually impossible to make any money to enable us to improve the facilities or keep large amounts of stock, some years ago there was a very big loan taken out with the brewery which has tied us down to them so we have to pay premium rate for our beers and the interest rate on the loan is 11%, the miss management of the club previously has had a massive impact on the club and has stopped the club moving forward, the details of my findings will all be made public at the up and coming AGM when people will finally find out the truth of why the club has struggled over the years and who has been responsible for the club being in the state it is in, this will stop the rumour mongers and make things a lot clearer. Without volunteers and people making contributions to the club we would not be able to operate, I would like to thank Harry Lillystone, Ideal Boilers and Guttridge Properties Ltd for there help and support recently people and companies in our community can and do make a significant difference. If any one is interested in getting involved in the club whether its giving some time up, making a donation or sponsoring the club please do not hesitate in getting in touch. Remember we have FREE WI-FI live sport on BT SPORT and SKY SPORTS

USE IT DON’T LOSE IT!

Just to clear a few things up, there seems to be a lot of rumours flying around that the club is on the verge of closing due to financial difficulties, I would like to assure people that this is not the case and although we continue to swim against the tide we are still holding

Regards, Garry What does sadden me is that there are certain enteritis in our community that think we are in competition with them for business

Making Christmas Special This overwhelmingly popular campaign launched on 1st November this year for donations of small gifts for older people in hospital on Christmas Day. The campaign has run with Leicester’s Hospitals for the past 5 years and we are delighted that older people in community hospitals now also benefit. Parents encouraged to help prepare their children for school Help your child become 'school ready' Parents across Leicestershire are being encouraged to ensure children who are starting school for the first time next year are ‘ready’. The new campaign forms part of a shared view of ‘school readiness’ developed by the Leicestershire Children and Families Partnership, where families, early years providers, 0-5 services and schools work together to ensure the best start in life for young children. A leaflet has been sent to all county parents with children starting school for the first time in September 2019, along with information about how to apply for places. It explains what it means for a child to be ready for school and includes some practical suggestions as to how families can get involved. It’s important to ensure that children have the skills, dispositions and attitudes to be successful as they start this journey through school. “It’s also important that those who may need additional support are identified and supported early, in order that they reach their full potential. “Parents have a key role in helping to ensure their child is ready to continue their learning journey as they enter school and can get off to a flying start.” Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and families, and partnership chairman Examples of how parents can help their children become school ready include: • Building their confidence and praising them for their efforts and achievements • Letting them play with other children and encouraging sharing and taking turns • Trying and planning healthy meals, having regular routines and making sure they get enough sleep More information about being ready for school is available here online. The deadline for first time admissions to Leicestershire primary schools is January 15, 2019.

Calling all knitters Time to dig out those knitting needles for the Big Knit It’s the return of the Big Knit campaign and Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling on Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to join in and get knitting! Whether a knitting ninja, purling pro, crochet connoisseur or just keen to have a go it’s time to get wild about wool and join the Big Knit. Now in its 15th year, the campaign is recruiting knitters to help create an impressive 1.6 million hats to adorn innocent smoothie bottles. For each be-hatted smoothie sold*, Age UK receives 25p, and that money helps the Charity support older people who are facing later life alone. Tony Donovan, Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland said: “We need local people to join us and help knit as many miniature hats as possible this winter to help us hit our huge 80,000 local target. It’s such a fun campaign to get behind and it does so much to help older people in our area. “The money raised will make a big difference to the lives of older people by funding our hugely important services and classes. These services, which include Day Care, dementia support, Men in Sheds and befriending amongst so many others, give local older people the chance to come along and make friends, learn new skills and most importantly have fun.” Last year alone, more than one million hats were lovingly created nationally, with designs including the hugely popular unicorn, grizzly bear, fluffy sheep and desert island. Bara Amouyal, innocent drinks, said: “The Big Knit has had such an incredible amount of support over the past 15 years and we are hugely grateful – we love seeing what miniature creations the nation can come up with! Through the Big Knit campaign, we want to do everything we can to make a difference to the lives of older people.” For more information on The Big Knit contact Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland on 0116 2992233 or visit https://www.ageuk.org.uk/leics/get-involved/fundraising/ the-big-knit/. Please send completed hats to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland at Lansdowne House, 113 Princess Road East, Leicester LE1 7LA or hand them in at any of our 24 shops or Resource Centres. This year’s hat knitting patterns are available to download, to find out more visit: www.ageuk.org.uk/bigknit or pop into any of our addresses to request a leaflet

As always we had a dual curriculum focus of History and  French. We practiced our spoken French in a variety of towns, shops and markets and learned a little of French culture through our visit to a cheese factory. Our history was based on William the Conqueror and his defeat of Mr Godwin’s Great Grandad Harry! (Harold Godwinson), at the Battle of Hastings, as we visited his birthplace and saw the world famous Bayeux Tapestry. We also looked at the D Day Invasion of World War 2, which saw us visit Pegasus Bridge, Pointe Du Hoc, British, American and German War Cemeteries and the town of Arromanches.

Our hotel this year had a gate that literally opened onto the beach, so given the good weather we spent 3 pleasant evenings on the beach playing football, paddling or just relaxing. Some of us recreated the Ryder Cup on the crazy golf course. After our dinner we spent a short time each evening reviewing our day and preparing for the following in a classroom, and then went up to enjoy the hotel disco, to play pool or sit and chat. The trip is always a great week but this year was particularly epic, even if it did mark the end of an era as Mr Ball, who has been on 8 consecutive trips, enjoyed his final visit to Normandy. Thanks also to Mrs Tointon, Mrs Fitzgibbon, Mrs Sharpe and Mrs Coley who also joined us on the trip.

HEALTHMATTERS SODIUM VALPROATE AND PREGNANCY Sodium valproate has long been used to treat bi-polar disorder and epilepsy, a condition caused by chemical changes in the brain. These changes cause symptoms ranging from loss of awareness and strange sensations (tingling feeling in the arms or legs), to fits and loss of consciousness. Epilepsy can have serious consequences if not treated properly and monitored by relevant health care professionals. Fortunately, there are a number of medications that are licensed to treat epilepsy, in order to provide relief to patients and maintain their normal lifestyle.

dangers of the medication, with about one in every six users unaware of the risks.

One such medication used to treat epilepsy is sodium valproate. This is a popular and widely used medication, prescribed because of its efficiency and reliability, giving it an advantage over the newer and more recently developed treatments options. In the UK it is prescribed under the brand names Epilim, Episenta and Epival. It works by correcting the chemical imbalance in the brain, therefore helping to reduce the chances of seizures occurring.

If you are already taking sodium valproate and are of child bearing age or pregnant, the recent findings and reports can be alarming to say the least. However, it is also important to note that the medication should not be stopped abruptly, as doing so can lead to seizures and subsequent worsening of the condition. Usually, with this medication, as well as with other anti- epileptic treatments, the strength and frequency of the medication is reduced gradually over the course of a few weeks. Please speak to your GP immediately if you are taking Valproate and are female of child bearing age, as you will need to be on a pregnancy prevention programme or have your medication changed.

If you are a woman of child bearing age, sodium valproate should only be used if nothing else works. If this is the case, you must also be part of a pregnancy prevention programme.

Despite sodium valproate being a main stay in the treatment of epilepsy, it is not a medication that is suitable for everyone. For example, women of childbearing age, as well as pregnant women, should not be taking sodium valproate, because it can cause birth defects. In women who take sodium valproate in pregnancy the incidence of birth defects is 10 in every 100, which makes it a very likely occurrence.

If you would like any further information on anything mentioned above, please pop in to the pharmacy or call us on 01162387353.

Studies and reports have surfaced recently, showing just how much sodium valproate can affect the foetus. Around 20,000 babies were born in the UK with disabilities and deformities, due to usage of this medication. Also, another major issue that occurred due to this drug was autism and brain damage in babies. Surveys carried out have shown that the public have not really been made aware of the
