Marie Curie Counts on Collection Volunteers With only 6 weeks to go, Marie Curie is appealing for local volunteers to help at their Christmas Collections. Collections are an integral part of the Marie Curie fundraising calendar and without them it would not be possible to provide the necessary nursing care for our terminally ill patients and their families in Leicestershire & Rutland. The local Marie Curie fundraising team are seeking collectors to help at collection days in supermarkets, stores and towns. Whilst everyone else will be preparing for Father Christmas to arrive this Christmas Eve, our nurses will be starting their night shift. Last year, one of our nurses was quizzed by a young son of a patient as he was concerned Father Christmas would not visit as she stays awake all night to look after his Daddy. Sue, very quickly explained that Marie Curie has a special agreement with the big man himself, that our nurses can close their eyes when he arrives at the house so that she does not see him. The nurses do such things so that our families can be at home during the festive period where they feel most comfortable and with their loved ones. Claire Korsakovs, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser for Leicestershire & Rutland says “As a collector you’ll be able to raise vital money for people like Sue’s patient to spend their Christmas at home where they wish to be. Our collection slots are only two hours long and will most definitely leave you with that Christmas Cheer.” Whether you’re a seasonal fundraiser or a newcomer looking to get involved for the first time, the local Marie Curie fundraising office would love to hear from you. To become a Marie Curie Collector, you need to be aged 16 or over. Children are welcome to collect alongside a parent or guardian. For more information for how you can get involved, please contact Claire Korsakovs on 07595 087169 or claire.korsakovs@mariecurie.org.uk

Amazing assistance dog charity close to finishing ‘centre of excellence’ in Osgathorpe OSGATHORPE based national charity, Canine Partners, is in the final stages of developing the first centre in the midlands for training assistance dogs. The charity, which trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with physical disabilities across the UK, is working hard to complete a brand new kennel block, which could help the charity to train and partner three times as many dogs. “The end is in sight to complete the new kennel building, which will house up to 40 dogs in training and will also include a veterinary room, kitchen and outdoor runs, giving us space to allow our dogs to rest between training sessions, says Richard Smith, Director of Operations at Canine Partners. “We are the only charity in the UK with a Midlands Training Centre providing assistance dogs for people with physical disabilities and the new kennels will enable even more life-changing partnerships to be formed. Canine Partners trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with disabilities, boosting their confidence and independence. The dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks including picking up and fetching items, opening doors and helping to undress a person. They can even help to load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency. “We are proud to be building this centre of excellence so that we can provide even more specialist training here in the Midlands. It will give the opportunity for more local people to apply for a canine partner where in the West Midlands alone, there are more than 13,000 people registered as disabled, says Richard. “By supporting and donating to our ‘Raise the Woof’ kennel appeal, you are helping us to move our amazing dogs in to their new kennels in the Spring of 2020 so that we can transform more lives for years to come. Find out more about how you can support the Raise the Woof appeal by visiting caninepartners.org.uk/raisethewoof

Speaker Mile Gould local historian and chair of K.M.L.H.G. A meeting with Robert “Bob” Barkby and his sister Joyce Crane This month, instead of an article relating to the streets of Kirby Muxloe, we turn our attention to a meeting with Bob Barkby and his sister Joyce Crane. Back in 2017, we published an article in Your Local describing “Tin Tack” Barkby, the village’s last boot maker and mender. Bob and Joyce are his offspring, now 98 and 90 years old respectively. A few months ago, Bob was on a visit to Northamptonshire, to visit his sister Joyce. As a surprise, his son, who was driving the car, stopped off at Kirby Muxloe, where he had arranged a stay of two nights at the Castle Farmhouse. During his stay, Bob visited many parts of the village, bringing back a host of memories, especially from his younger years. When I returned from a holiday, it was a great surprise to find two messages on the answerphone saying “This is Robert Barkby. I would really like to talk to you about my life in the village”. As it was soon to be Joyce’s 90th birthday when Bob would be visiting her again, it was agreed that two of us would travel to Joyce’s home in Northamptonshire in order to meet them both. When we arrived, we were met by two sprightly people who welcomed us into the bungalow, where we settled down to listen and record their memories. We began by talking about Bob and Joyce’s life in the village, when they were young. Bob has always believed that he was born in one of the thatched cottages on Main Street. Generally, around that time (the 1930’s), babies were born at home. However, it appears that Mrs Gibson, who lived in one of the thatched cottages, also acted as an unqualified midwife. Both Bob and Joyce attended the village school, with Bob going on to South Wigston Intermediate School and Joyce to Alderman Newton’s girls’ grammar school in Leicester. Their younger brother attended Alderman Newton’s boys’ grammar
school. Bob left school at the age of 14 and became a plumbing apprentice to Harry Ireland, the village plumber. Harry travelled to his various jobs on a “Norton combination” (motor bike and side car). They could often be seen leaving Harry’s shop on Main Street, with Bob plus all the required tools loaded into the sidecar. Much of their work was in Kirby Fields and Bob remembers working at the Kendall's, where his mother had been in service in previous years, and the Old House where the Wilshere’s lived. In the early years, Bob earnt the equivalent of £1:20 per week. Later on, he worked for Sturgess, the motor dealers. George Matthew “Tin Tack” Barkby, their father, originally worked out of a workshop down the jitty opposite the present Post Office. He later moved to number 45, Main Street (now the Opticians). When George moved to 45, Main Street, the family, which had initially lived at 124, Main Street (near to Faith Cottage) moved to the living accommodation above and at the back of the new shop. Joyce told us that her father was “naughty” - he smoked, but then almost everyone did in those days. He also collected cigarette cards such as Players, Kingston's, Wills and Capstan. He took great pride in these cards and whenever he obtained new ones, he “tin tacked” them onto the wooden panelling which lined the shop (the panelling is still there today). The cards were a popular talking point and customers and friends would often come into the shop with cards, hoping to complete one of the collections. We have been told that TinTack held 13 tacks in his mouth when working on a shoe or boot. Joyce confirmed that this was true and said that she was often frightened watching him work, always wondering how many tacks he actually swallowed. Joyce also remembers her father’s buffing machine. She used to have a ride on the wooden treadle, which her father rocked backwards and forwards with his foot. Apart from shoes and boots, people also brought in school satchels and other leather goods for repair. Joyce used to help in the shop on Saturday mornings, using the sewing machine to repair items and then loading them into her basket, on the front of her bike. She then delivered the goods to various families around the village. She recalls delivering repairs
to the Attenborough (Richard the film director and David the naturalist) family who lived near to Dr Garfit on Kirby Fields. When Bob first worked for Harry Ireland, a number of tricks were played on the new recruit - he was sent out for a “glass hammer”, a “left handed screw driver” and the worst one of all - he was sent to Armson and Hollis, builders merchants, on Castle Road for “ a putlog hole” ( the hole left in brickwork for scaffolding poles). The workers in the builder’s yard being “in” on the trick duly filled a bag with 6 house bricks, which Bob then carried all the way back to Harry Ireland’s shop on Main Street! What a trick!! Talking about school brought back more memories, especially of the school dentist. On one occasion, when the dentist came to visit, he remembers that he needed a filling in one of his teeth. The drill was worked by the dentist using a foot treadle. He remembers squealing with pain, only to be given a sharp slap on the face. Finally, one of Bob’s favourite tricks when visiting the Majestic cinema in Ratby – after securing a moth in a matchbox, Bob and his friends sat on the back row of the cinema and waited until the lights went out and the film had started. The moth was then released and flew straight into the light, thus disrupting the film. The owner shouted “Yom barred” at Bob and his friends, a phase which will still resound in the memories of many Ratby and Kirby residents! Next month - continuing with Bob and Joyce’s memories.

IT’s THAT time of the year again. We approach it with equal degrees of delight and alarm delight because it’s fun and lovely and a time to be with families and friends, alarm because there’s so much to do and not enough time to do it in! We’ve got lots of new decorations for the Library this year, which will be going up at the end of the month, plus lots of other things going on, so come and see us for a relaxing cuppa and a chat – and of course to borrow a few books. The Library was spookily decorated for Hallowe’en with spiders, webs and skeletons galore. We also made black cat cup cakes and iced gingerbread skeletons. Here they are!
find delicate bone china crockery, tea pots and coffee pots to give the proceedings a feeling of old-fashioned charm and it worked! We have eight participants, plus volunteers, and on this occasion we also had Katherine Brown, who is the CEO of Crafting Relationships, plus Noel Singh from the County Council, plus a little girl, the granddaughter of one of our volunteers – very nice to have an inter-generational mix. The participants decided what they want to do in future Cafes, so we hope to be having talks about wartime Kirby Muxloe, possibly Joseph Merrick (the Elephant Man, (if you remember him), and Leicester City Football Club – one of our participants is a huge fan and has been for ages. If you are over 50 and feel that you could do with some company, do come along. All you need to do is pop into the Library to book your place, or ring the Library on 0116 2387343, or Liz Collinson on 0116 2393332. If you have trouble in getting to the Library, we have small transport budget so could help you with that. We meet once a month on a Tuesday morning from 10.30 – 12.30, and our next four meeting dates are: 26th November 2019, 17th December 2019, 14th January 2020 and the 28th January 2020
So what have we been doing and what are we planning? LOCAL HISTORY CAFE - We’ve started! After much preparation, we opened our first Cafe on 29th October. We really didn’t know what to expect and were a bit apprehensive – but it was GREAT! We have six volunteers who have set this up, and we’ve all been rushing around charity shops and antique centres to
QUIZ NIGHT - This was a really good evening, with a suitably challenging quiz set by our ever-popular Rosemary and Roger. We had a raffle with loads of items to be won and of course fish and chips. We really do seem to have alighted upon a brilliant provider for the fish and chips, many saying they were the best they’ve had – really crisp, grease free, hot and all served up in double-quick time. A great evening and we shall be doing it all again in the Spring – date not yet decided but we’ll let you know. Tickets go really quickly, so you will need to get yours promptly once we have a date. MEET THE AUTHOR – JON WILKINS This event took place on 2nd November. The
audience was small, a little disappointingly, but very select! Lots of prose and poetry readings. Even for those who are not normally into this kind of thing, it was actually really lovely – listening to poetry about places that you know well but haven’t seen in quite that way before – Scraptoft Hall, Welford Road cemetery, Bradgate Park, Rosie’s Doughnuts in the market, and many more. It left us feel really proud of our city and oddly nostalgic. Many thanks to Jon and his team for such a stimulating afternoon. Jon has kindly donated a copy of Exhausting a Place in Leicester to the Library, so it is there for you to borrow. BEETLE DRIVE!
G
What have we here? Beetles! Our latest bright idea – a beetle drive plus afternoon tea! We have not yet fixed a date, but some time in the Spring. This will be an event for all the family – nostalgic for grown-ups, huge fun for children and all accompanied by a very posh afternoon tea – sandwiches, scones and cakes, with tea, coffee or soft drinks. What could be nicer? Watch this space for more details when our planning is a bit further advanced. TOY BOX - We are planning to install a toy box in the children’s play area. We have lots of soft toys, but are looking for Duplo and Brio construction toys. If you have any of these that you no longer require, why not donate them to the Library? We would be forever grateful. AND FINALLY........

Kirby Muxloe Free Church are pleased to once again be hosting the Saltmine Theatre Company and this year their Christmas show is: Rapunzel She’s the queen of her castle, the mistress of mischief. With big hair and even bigger dreams, Rapunzel’s curls fizz like fireworks and her imagination roams wild and free. She invents the best games, paints the brightest pictures, jumps the highest, runs the fastest. But then - there isn't much competition when you're always on your own. Rapunzel stands out. Or she would, if anyone was there to see her. But she’s been told that, just like her hair, she needs to be tamed before she can get ahead. The outside world just isn’t ready for her yet. Meanwhile, across the city, all the young Prince wants is to be on his own. Overshadowed by his brother, he’s never fitted in and he knows he’ll never be the King everyone expects. On the evening of his coronation party he makes a run for it – straight to a lonely tower in the woods. Could this shy boy be the key to Rapunzel’s freedom? Or is the world too much of a scary place to be yourself? Let your hair down this Christmas and join Saltmine Theatre Company’s unexpectedly twisty tall tale as we unravel the knots of being different, being free – and being yourself.

County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com which we can improve how we respond to perpetrators and support victims and their families
Flooding Markfield Road, Ratby I reported issues on Markfield road near to 82 to Highways as water appeared to be coming out of the drain. During my meeting with the Assistant Director of Highways on the 22nd October, I raised the issue again. Crews attended on Saturday morning of 26th October and the Gulley outside was 82 cleaned and jetted towards the footway. However a sunken patch gulley was found to be still blocked and water crossing road further down. The Gulley opposite number 66 was jetted 5 metres into the verge to a sunken dip. Officers have reported back to me as I was concerned with the change in weather and overnight frosts which could cause a safety issue for both residents and motorists. I have also arranged for warning signs of slippery roads to be placed out. A Highways drainage team attended on the 31st October and carried out works which has stopped the water flowing out of the drain. After that visit highway engineers requested an investigation by the camera team who will attend on the 6th November to trace and report problems and follow up work that may be needed as a result of the camera investigation. I have requested all that all the gully’s and drains along Markfield Road are emptied.
Domestic abuse and sexual violence services consultation Leicester City Council, Leicestershire County Council, Rutland County Council, and the Police and Crime Commissioner for Leicestershire are in the process of re-commissioning sexual and domestic violence and abuse services across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. This involves looking at ways in
We currently commission a range of independent services for people affected by domestic or sexual violence and abuse. The four organisations commission services both jointly and individually. These contracts are due to end 31 March 2021. Whilst there are differences in need and commissioning budgets across our areas, we have a shared commitment to delivering the best possible service across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. The aim of this consultation is to seek views on proposed core services for victims, children, and those perpetrating domestic abuse. The focus is on easy access, advice and information, prevention, support, protection and recovery.
https://consultations.leicester.gov.uk/sec/ dsva_consultation/
Leicestershire schools admissions consultation for 2021 entry Leicestershire County Council is consulting on proposed changes to its School Admissions Policy and arrangements to take effect from Autumn 2021. You are invited to make comment on the proposed changes to policy, briefly they comprise of: • Do you agree with the removal of the current criterion 7 in Leicestershire’s Oversubscription Criteria, which will no longer prioritise applications of grounds of ‘belief’; • Do you agree with the revised Leicestershire School Admissions Policy and associated co-ordinated schemes for entry Autumn 2021?
Why We Are Consulting As stated above, this consultation looks at how domestic and sexual violence and abuse services (DSVA) are commissioned for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland from April 2021. Each commissioning organisation is committed to protecting its core budget for these services - however there are a growing number of people needing the services, and some partner organisations previously benefited from one-off funds which will not be available in the future, thereby increasing pressure on the service.
• Do you agree with the amended catchment boundary changes for Primary Schools in Leicestershire for entry Autumn 2021.
To ensure we design the best services across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland we would like to hear the views of service users, service providers, support agencies and anyone else who has a view on current or future sexual and domestic violence and abuse support services across the region.

You can take part using the below link or go to Leicestershire County Councils website and type in consultations
Schools, parents of children between the ages of 2 and 18, residents and other members of the public will have the opportunity to have their say on these proposed changes until 29 November 2019. Please see the link below to read the full consultation document which includes details on how to respond:
Once the consultation is closed recommendations will be provided to the County Council’s Cabinet for a decision. Your views are important to us. Please be assured that no change will be made until everyone has had the opportunity to have their say.

Ode to the Major Oak, Sherwood Forest Oh, ancient oak you do not know how slowly time has passed for you. Almost one thousand years ago you were among the lucky few to burst an acorn's drying shell and root yourself in fertile soil. But soon you'll die and never tell of your sojourn in mortal coil. It matters not to your small world. You'll live and die and never know how history around unfurled. Nor did you see men come and go and sometimes rest within your shade as year by year your leaves unfurled and sheltered this small forest glade; this portion of a greater world. And we who have a smaller span of three score years and ten they say, and use our years as best we can, to value every single day, we envy you who knows of nought! Your life has not been spent the way of humans, who, with ritual thought think often of their dying day.

discovered a hidden talent, not sure he’s ready to hire himself out yet but it will put him in good stead for when Ash and Stevo have their first child which incidentally is due very soon, I hope to bring good news in the next edition, I wish them both well!
Hi everyone, I hope you all had a fantastic Halloween and firework night, the Monster Ball we held at the club was a massive success and was well supported with lots of families attending and lots of people getting in to the spirit of things by dressing up, there were some great outfits on show and we had a great night, thanks to Rachel Cockerill for all her hard work in organizing the event and everyone else that chipped in which there are far to many to mention although I would like to thank Stevo MacLeod for entertaining the kids with party games which couldn’t have been easy as there were so many of them but he was excellent and has
Things at the club have been busy again we have been hosting lots of parties and the foot trade considering the awful weather has been steady. On the sporting front the table skittles crew have been having moderate success and if you would like to come down to watch they play on a Tuesday evening, the pool teams are both doing well and are both through to the next round of the cup competition. On the football front the Panthers under 13s continue to smash everyone out the park and are top of the league well done boys keep it up! The seniors have only played once since the last issue of the local due to the wet weather so not much to report there. Please remember we have all the football action on sky sports and there are lots of Leicester City games coming up, if you are looking for a new home for your team or club please get in touch we have the facilities and if you are looking to hold a party give me a shout out venue is as good as most places and very affordable! Look out for details of our Christmas Eve and New Years Eve parties, be great to see you all soon. Remember use it don’t lose it! Regards
Garry -
Marie Curie Counts on Collection Volunteers Start this year with a good feeling - Marie Curie is appealing for local volunteers to help at their Great Daffodil Appeal Collection from February to April. Could this be you? Collections are an integral part of the Marie Curie fundraising calendar and without them it would not be possible to provide the necessary nursing care for our terminally ill patients and their families in Leicestershire & Rutland. The local Marie Curie fundraising team are seeking collectors to help at collection days in supermarkets, stores and towns. Claire Korsakovs, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser for Leicestershire & Rutland says “As a collector you’ll be able to raise vital money for local people to enable them spend their last weeks or days at home where they wish to be. Our collection slots are only two hours long and will most definitely leave you with that charitable feeling”.

Kirby Muxloe Local committee for Cancer Research UK
What's on at Ratby Parish Church
Thank you to everyone who supported our recent Autumn Fayre, held in the Village Hall. Over 80 people attended and in 2 hours we raised almost £900 for Cancer Research! This year, we tried to have some stalls which were of interest to the younger generation and the colouring in area was particularly appreciated. The stalls all looked amazing and a big thank-you goes to all those who worked hard to produce such quality and a lovely atmosphere. We are now turning our thoughts to next year’s events. Already, the Chef & Spice restaurant has been booked for a Curry night, on Monday, April 6th. Other events will hopefully include a Quiz Night in late January, a hog roast at the end of June, our Autumn Fayre in September and then a Musical Evening in November. More information to follow once dates and venues have been booked. The Committee look forward to seeing you next year!

Friends of the Charnwood Forest The first meeting of the Friends this season took place on Thursday 26th September at the Woodhouse Eaves village hall, where we were to have heard a talk on ‘Visitors to Charnwood forest’ by David Robinson. Unfortunately this talk had to be postponed for medical reasons, so Marilyn Palmer gave a talk on ‘The Making of the Industrial Landscape in Leicestershire’. ‘Landscape’ is perhaps best connected with Leicestershire through the work of W G Hoskins, late professor of local history at Leicester University. What people may not realise is that he came to dislike Leicestershire, and particularly its industrial landscape, and he retreated to Devon as soon as he was able. So what were the industries that contributed to this landscape? The talk covered the rise, and in some cases the fall, of these industries, from knitting and the boot and shoe industry to iron founding and engineering, and the bricks which made St Pancras station. Weaving was, of course, a very ancient occupation. At first sheep were shorn, the wool either combed or carded, then spun and knitted, all by hand. The first knitting machines may well have orginated in Nottinghamshire, and certainly by the mid
18th century the highest concentrations were in the Nottingham, Leicester and Derby shires. These evolved into power-driven machines which by the 1870’s formed the basis for a factory culture. Here the talk touched on the subject of the role of women in the growth of this industry. Meanwhile boots and shoes were being manufactured chiefly in Northamptonshire, but the industry spread north in the 1860’s, examples being the Wheatsheaf Works and the British United Shoe Machinery Co, both in Leicester city. Charles Bennion, the CEO of British United, was responsible for the presentation of Bradgate Park to the people of Leicester and its shire. Iron works arose at this time; Gimson’s works being a very good example. Its products may still be viewed at the Abbey Pumping station, which originally was designed to pump sewage to Beaumont Leys but is now a museum. To make things involves a source of energy, anything from man or horse power to the introduction of steam, the product of heating water using a coal fire. The next topic in the talk was, logically, about the coal industry. In the north western part of the county the coal measures have a fairly thin overburden and are easily mined. Unfortunately, between
Ratby Methodist Church 31 Station Road
Dr D McNeil
them and their city lies the Charnwood Forest, which makes transport both difficult and expensive. This led on to transport, which is necessary for industrial growth in any case – the bigger the market, the more prosperous the industry. The coming of the canalisation of the river Soar between the Trent and Leicester allowed cheap coal from Derbyshire to flood into Leicester, depriving the Leicestershire coalfield of its market. Its first attempt at retrieving the situation was the Charnwood Forest canal – a disaster in the making. Then came the Leicester and Swannington Railway, well known as the Stephenson line that had to create both the steam whistle and the Glenfield tunnel. The age of steam has come to an end. Factories which once produced enough to give Leicester the title of the richest city in Europe are now blocks of flats, either by conversion or destruction. Smoke no longer hangs over the city. Would Hoskins have approved? We shall never know... The next meeting of the Friends will be at the same venue on 14th October when Martyn Speight will give a talk on ‘The Storey of the Charnwood Water Supply over the last 150 years’.

Kirby Muxloe WI Kirby Muxloe WI have had a busy time this pass couple of months starting with the September meeting which was a fun night with “Bits and Bobs”. Bob and Dell Neal brought along a collection of very odd ball items which were passed around for members to guess what they were, some were obvious but others quite unfathomable like the metal item that was for making pleats. September also saw our Forest Group meeting held at Newbold Verdon WI, where we were entertained by two very accomplished “Belly Dancers” who whilst talking us through a brief history of the dance expertly performed the various moves that have transpired over time.
Members attending Autumn Lunch
Next came serving the Teas and Cakes at the Kirby Fun Day, which had us very busy and raised much needed funds for the Village Hall.
Adults 50p entry, children free All proceeds to Church Funds
Members also attended various workshops held at WI House , a favourite was the Gold Embroidery Thread Workshop. There was also a Taste and Try event held at Castle Donnington WI which was a Cookery and Flower Demonstration followed by a delicious supper all provided by the Leisure Team. An event we are hoping to put on in September 2020, so watch this space.

We also played the first round of the Skittle Matches, which we won so we're through to the next round and fingers crossed for a win as skill doesn't appear to come into it. At the October meeting we had six guests from Glooston WI and our event for the evening was a Flower Demonstration followed by a lovely Supper provided by our own Catering Team. Next came the Autumn Fair where we had various Craft Table stalls selling a variety of items ranging from Cheese,Gifts, Wood Turned items,Cards and of course our own WI Tables selling home made cakes and preserves and Craft items which showcased the skills of our own talented members. The following day saw five members go to the Autumn Lunch held at Greetham Golf Club where they enjoyed a lovely lunch and afterwards listened to the speaker Nikki Belsher, a choreographer who is presently choreographing the stage play Billy Elliott. We are looking forward to another year of full of various events and invite you to come along and see what we're all about, you never know you might be pleasantly surprised, and if you decide to join us you will certainly be busy. We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7 for 7.30pm until approx. at St. Bartholomew's Church Hall on Main Street.

Ratby Primary School News.... World in Union?
The children in Year 4 have been learning all about the Rugby World Cup. To start the week, we learnt all about how to be successful. Inspirational quotes such as ‘One for all, all for one’ and ‘Success & honour come from determination & sacrifice’ were discussed in detail. The children then took their own interpretation of the quotes to motivate themselves for what else might face them in their lives, in or out of school. We then went on to learn about the nation of Japan, the host nation of the Rugby World Cup and the origins of the game of rugby. They wrote a first person account of the moment William Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it. In maths they learnt about capacities of rugby stadiums. The children had opportunities to learn more about Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the home nations. One of the highlights of the week has to be learning a Haka routine, an ancient Māori war dance. Both Mars and Venus went head to head (a Haka-off). Finally, we got to share what we had learnt in the KS2 assembly, even performing the Haka in front of all the children and adults, there to watch.
Year 3 Visit to the Sealife Centre To launch our Blue Abyss topic this half term, Year 3 visited the Sealife Centre in Birmingham. The children spent time exploring and studying life under water and were treated to a guided tour that explained lots of interesting facts about different species. We had a brilliant day and look forward to sharing our own exhibition with parents soon.
Teen Tech Event
On Monday 30th September 2019, three schools including Ratby Primary School went to Groby Village Hall to attend TEEN TECH! Teen Tech is a group that encourages kids to make their own innovative buildings and ideas. So Ratby Primary decided to go to the event along with other schools. When we got there, we split into groups of five and met in the hall for a talk. They gave us instructions of what we would be designing. We all went to our tables and wrote down our ideas for our creations! Next, we went back in the hall and the man who was hosting told us what to do next. We had to choose the design and gadgets for our buildings. After that was done, we started to build! There were many different ideas and buildings. After 35 minutes was over, we all met again in the hall to decide the winners. The host let us present our creations and later we decided who the champions were! The group that won from Ratby Primary on the day was us: Isla, Lucia, Saskia and Kyla and we were very proud. Our team and the team in second place (Brady, Daniel, Oliver, Henry and Louis) were then able to attend the regional finals event. It was a lot of fun and our building won ‘Best Mixed Use Building’ and the boys team won ‘Best Business Space’. We had a fantastic day!
Year 3 visit Shenton School
Year 3 had a fantastic time visiting their friends at Shenton School last month. They had the pleasure of watching a Diwali Assembly which explained the story behind the Festival of Lights and then spent time making Diwali crafts. The children loved their visit.
Superheroes This term Year 1 had a visit from the evil 'Professor Slime' who had captured Mrs Jones! The children thought of lots of different creative ideas for how they could save her. They designed their own Superhero and wrote a story about how they could save Mrs Jones. Finally the children discovered a slime trail leading to the wooden house on the playground, where Professor Slime had left a series of clues. The children solved the clues and found out how Mrs Jones escaped.

Planning At a recent Planning Committee Meeting at HBBC, an application was determined by the committee that sought to build 4, one and a half storey bungalows on land to the rear of 4 - 28 Markfield Rd in Ratby. Chris, who sits on the committee, first read out a statement from Ozzy objecting to the proposal and the went on to further object citing the material impact on the road network as it so close to the roundabout and the visibility coming out on that road. More importantly, the previous applications on this site in 2017 and 2018 for 9 dwellings and then 4 dwellings were both

refused by the Planning Committee and an appeal was dismissed by the Planning Inspectorate for the 4 dwellings. The Conservative Group led by Chris as Lead Member objected to this but the controlling Lib Dem Members voted for it so the vote was lost 11-5. What was also noted was Planning Officers have now stated that Settlement Boundaries no longer exist due to the lack of a 5 year Housing Supply due to the noncompliance of the Barwell and Earl Shilton Sustainable Urban Extension's coming online. These SUE’S were forced through by the Liberal Democrat Administration in their
Country Market –
100 Year Celebration The Country Market Society, previously known as WI Markets, celebrates its centenary this year and local Country Markets up and down the country have been encouraged to celebrate this milestone. Sadly, Country Markets struggle to survive in many parts of the country, despite the ethos being similar to when it was first set up in wartime Britain: The Markets were designed to encourage housewives and their families to sell excess produce, to make clothing items and to bake or make preserves to sell. Nothing was allowed to waste. There may well be a renewed interest for this in the coming months and happily Glenfield’s Country Market appears to be bucking the trend and remains a popular market held each Friday in St Peter’s Church Centre (9am-11am). Our producers welcome a wide audience with their weekly displays of homemade and home-crafted goods. Glenfield’s celebration of the centenary, held on Friday 11th October, saw us inviting our regular customers to attend a special market and to bring a friend to share in the festivities. The hall was dressed with bunting and celebratory balloons and refreshments were served with cakes presented on elegant stands. Thanks to Dorothy we had a cake to celebrate the 100 years and Jean made a special banner to display. All of the producers put their displays up in the relevant sections of the hall to show off their baking, crafting and growing skills. We encouraged all to come dressed to represent any decade between 1919 and 2019 and it was great to see how this was supported. There was also a photo competition where producers had found a photo taken of them as a child/baby. Those who had participated wore a badge to show our customers who they could choose from. The photos spanned all of the decades too with our oldest producer Betty being 92. A raffle was held where the proceeds will be given to our chosen local charities and we also stayed open for an extra hour which went down well with our customers. The atmosphere was positive and friendly and it was lovely to see so many of our regulars as well as introducing ourselves to so many new faces. The proceeds from this raffle have been shared between our chosen local charities, MS Anstey and New Dawn Family Support Service. Feedback since the event has been positive; “A lovely morning. Thanks for all of your hard work.”, “Very well presented and enjoyable..” “…. A wonderful selection of cakes!” and “(We) enjoyed the atmosphere…. Very interesting History/Archives Table.” As mentioned earlier, Glenfield appears to be bucking the trend and will hopefully remain a feature of the village for many more years to come. Throughout the year our producers put on seasonal displays and we look forward to our customers browsing for Hallowe’en, Remembrance and Christmas over the next few months. Just to remind everyone, we are open Friday mornings 9am-11am St Peter’s Church Centre, Glenfield, LE3 8DP and admission is free!

previous term in charge of the Council. That is what happens when you put all your eggs in one basket and they do not come home to roost. This puts the village in a precarious position with the 168 houses application to the rear of Markfield Rd. Once again, we take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and remember we are only a phone call away. Regards
Chris & Ozzy.

Spiders When Autumn leaves fall to the ground I know it’s time to look around To spot the beast I dread and fear The one that comes in every year The beast I speak of in hushed tone Is something ‘bout which most folk moan A creature seen in hedge and tree I wish it stayed there actually It's not so much that he looks scary Nor even that his legs are hairy It's more the number of those limbs The speed he moves when daylight dims By now you probably will have guessed Just what it is that gets me stressed It's not a wolf or lion at all But something really rather small With beasts of four legs I can cope At worst of times I still have hope The one I mean has twice that number And when he comes I’m in dead lumber While watching telly from my seat The beast that I don’t wish to meet Creeps out from where he's hid all day And running, starts to head my way I grab a glass or empty cup And from my armchair I get up And place it quickly over him Sealed with a card to keep him in Then safely take him back outside Where he can roam both far and wide Was I afraid? Well if you probe You'll find I’m an Arachnophobe Kirby lad
