JOIN THE FIGHT AGAINST HEART DISEASE IN LEICESTERSHIRE Live in Leicestershire? Have been affected by heart disease? Want to join the fight against heart disease? Not sure how ? Read on to find out more Around 107,000 people in Leicestershire are fighting their daily battles with heart and circulatory disease. Heart and circulatory disease kills nearly 2,300 people each year in Leicestershire – nearly a quarter of them before the age of 75. The nation’s heart charity is calling on people across Leicestershire to take heart and join the fight against heart disease by becoming part of their local fundraising group and raising vital funds for heart research. Carrie Seaton, BHF Fundraising Manager for Leicestershire and Northamptonshire, said: “Heart disease is heartless. Too many lives are lost each year, and we’re determined to do everything we can to protect more families from this devastation. “Our fundraising groups are the face of the BHF in their local communities. From running fundraising events through to supporting schools and local businesses, or organising collections, they are a fantastic way to support our vital work and help people locally. Any time that you can give will be invaluable, because every pound raised will help fund vital research and identify new treatments that could help save lives. BHF research has helped halve death rates from heart and circulatory disease over the past 50 years, but there is still a long way to go. Through the public’s generosity the BHF will fund half a billion pounds of new research by 2020.
We need your help to save the lives of people you love and care about.

The year is 1940, London. With the nation bowed down by war, the British ministry turns to propaganda films to boost morale at home. Realising their films could use "a woman's touch", the ministry hires  Catrin Cole as a scriptwriter in charge of writing the female dialogue. 
Although her artist husband looks down on her job, Catrin's natural flair quickly gets her noticed by cynical, witty lead scriptwriter Buckley. Catrin and Buckley set out to make an epic feature film based on the Dunkirk rescue  starring the gloriously vain, former matinee idol Ambrose Hilliard. As bombs are dropping all around them, Catrin, Buckley and their colourful cast and crew work furiously to make a film that will warm the hearts of the nation.

Art Class at Ratby Can I tell you about the ART CLASS at RATBY VILLAGE HALL on Tuesday afternoons. This group has been running for several years under the guidance of tutor Julia Kent. We draw and paint many different subjects - landscapes, seascapes,  people, still life, buildings ....... the list is endless. We use pencil, crayons, watercolours, acrylics, pastels - sometimes all of the above in one picture! All who attend are enthusiastic in creating paintings and Julia is there to lend a helping hand if needed. From the blank piece of paper ( or canvas) a picture emerges with the making of a few marks. It doesn't always go according to plan, but there is always something to be done to turn it around. If you attended the Ratby Open exhibition in June you will have seen some of the work painted by our group. There are a few vacancies at the moment so if you've ever wondered about how to go about drawing and painting, here's your chance! Just contact Julia on 0116 2770939 for more details.

Ratby Library with Crow Pie Cafe
September Tea party with Animal Friends Our September Tea party was a great success with five stalls in the building and the attraction of ‘Animals for Parties’. The Animal man brought a number of animals; squirrel, owl, snake, rabbit, hampster, and Tarantula Spider for children to hold while he explained about their lifestyle and how they were looked after. The stalls were popular and the income from the day added to the ever present need to finance the library. Thanks to Annette Roach who organised the event for us and to the volunteers that helped run the Café.

point for excess local produce, with apples galore. The produce is free to anyone who wants it, though a donation to the Library is always welcome. We are very grateful to all those who have contributed and look forward to continuing this community service.
As we move into the new school year, we would like to congratulate Kirby Muxloe kids on their strong response to the Summer Reading Challenge. We have had more children than ever register for the scheme, and more completers – 153 registering and 102 completing. This reflects a surge in participation across the county and bodes well for the future. All volunteers have enjoyed taking part and the number of books issued has gone up. Kirby Muxloe Primary School children will be presented with their certificates at a special assembly shortly. So very well done to children and their parents/carers alike! We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
Did you know that, when you join the Library, you will be issued with a PIN number that will allow you to access Leicestershire Library services from your own device at home? For example, you can access the entire Leicestershire Libraries catalogue and order any book you want. The book will be delivered to your local Library and you will be informed by text or email that it has arrived. You can then pop in to collect it. You can also renew books on-line, download e-books and access reference materials.
We are now turning our attention to preschool children. Wriggly Reader sessions will take place on Wednesday afternoons once a month, starting on 27th September, from 2.00 – 2.45 and young children are very welcome to attend with their parents/carers, to listen to stories and take part in the actions. It should be fun and we are looking forward to it. The Library has been acting as a collecting
Our Library is so much more than just the traditional concept of a Library. Although it is of course primarily about books, it is not just that. If you simply want to pop in to meet your friends over a hot drink in a warm and welcoming environment, without borrowing any books at all, feel free to do so. It is also a source of information (and sometimes, as mentioned above, a source of free surplus garden produce!). You will find magazines and jigsaws to pass the time. Also modern, free computers, with free access to wifi and good printing facilities (photocopies are subject to a small charge, although children
can have up to 5 a day for their homework at no charge). We are thinking about running some construction sessions for children using Lego and other toy building materials. To this end, if anyone has any such items left from when their own children were at home, we would very much welcome them as donations. We are also proposing to mount free open house sessions to give people knowledge of how to use computers and confidence in doing so. This would take place on Monday evenings. If you are interested, just pop in and let us know. And finally, of course, we continue to run our coffee mornings on the fourth Saturday of every month, with a range of hot drinks and home-made cakes on offer. These are beginning to generate a really nice atmosphere, where people meet up with families and friends. Drinks and cakes can also be taken out if preferred. Dates for the next few months are below.

Groby Wine Circle A new lottery with a £25,000 jackpot is launching in the District of Blaby to support local good causes. Blaby District Council’s Councillors approved plans for the authority to launch its own online community lottery, Love Blaby Lottery, to benefit local community organisations across the local area. Tickets cost just £1, with 60p given to local good causes, compared to only 28p in every pound from National Lottery ticket sales. The lottery is anticipated to launch in 2018. Weekly draws will be held with a jackpot of £25,000 for a matching sequence of six numbers. £2,000, £250, £25 and three free tickets can also be won in each draw. Good causes in the district will be able to set up their own lottery page to receive 50p in every pound spent by players entering. 10p is put into a general ‘good cause’ fund to be administered by the Council. Players who do not support a specific cause will see 60p of their ticket price going into the general good causes fund and distributed by the Council. Councillor Sheila Scott, Portfolio holder for Planning, Strategy, Economic & Community Housing Development, said: “The Love Blaby Lottery provides a great opportunity to help local good causes to raise additional money. “We are committed to continuing our support to local community groups through our community grants scheme and other initiatives, including plans to appoint a Community Champion who will lead on this exciting initiative.” Regular updates about the launch of Love Blaby Lottery will be available on the Council’s website and through its social media channels. Local organisations can find out about how to sign up to the lottery and benefit from the money raised at two events groups can register to attend. For more information contact the Partnerships & Community Development Team via strategic.partnerships@blaby.gov.uk.

Groby Wine Circle is a very sociable group which usually meets on the third Monday of the month at Groby Community College. Speakers are invited to give talks on a variety of interesting topics after which there is a chance to catch up socially over a drink with a cheese and French bread. Throughout the year we organise fun nights out such as skittles, quiz nights, meals out and visits, etc. In June past we had an organised walk around the lakes at Water Mead Park followed by a meal at the Hope and Anchor. However our first meeting back after the summer break on 18th September where we caught up with summer things and found out about the elusive and secret life of “Clarice Cliff” from our guest speaker Derek Holloway. Whilst not everyone’s choice in pottery it was interesting to learn more about some of the art deco movement, which only lasted for about 10 years, and it got us all thinking about what might just be lurking hidden in the attic or can be picked at the local jumble and car boot sales.
Future guest talks include: • •
Monday 23 October – A brief History of Invention Monday 20 November - The funny side a travel (from a travel agents point of view)
We have a skittles night (including supper) on 27 October, at the Red Lion, Huncote. Starts at 7PM (please reserve your tickets in advance). Although we don’t normally like to talk about festive season this early in the year, our annual Christmas dinner will be on Wednesday 13th December, and this year will be at Ashfields, Earl Shilton and you will need to reserve a place at our October meeting. If you feel you would be interested in coming along or would like more information about our Wine Circle please contact either: Dave Cooper (0116 2392844) or Robbie Grundy (0116 2393853).
Service of Loving Remembrance You are invited to come to Ratby Parish Church on Sunday 22nd October at 3pm to join us in a short service of loving remembrance. At this service we remember those particularly from Ratby and Groby who have died. During the service there will be an opportunity for quiet prayer and reflection. The names of those who have recently died will be read out as well as any who you would like to add to the list. You will also have the opportunity to light a candle in their memory. This service is not only for the recently bereaved but also anyone who would like to give thanks for someone who has been important to you but has passed away. Please invite anyone who you would think would appreciate this opportunity. We look forward to seeing you.

Date for your Diary SATURDAY 2nd DECEMBER – 6.00pm – The Parish Hall, Kings Drive. WIND IN THE WILLOWS – by BOX TALE SOUP This exuberant, award winning puppet company works its magic on a beautiful new adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s evergreen classic riverbank story: gleeful larks, messing about in boats, incorrigible amphibians, ‘poop-poop’, the menacing Wild Wood, wicked weasels and an almighty dust-up to finish with.
Oaktree Lettings are pleased to sponsor the Kirby Knights under 9 football team, we wish them the very best of luck in the coming season.
Events to help those on fostering journey People urged to become foster parents Kind-hearted individuals are being asked to step forward and become foster parents for vulnerable children and young people in Leicestershire. Leicestershire County Council is running two events next month to try and encourage people to open up their homes to children in need. The informal evenings, set to be held from 6.15pm to 8pm on Wednesday, 25 October, at County Hall in Glenfield, will provide prospective foster parents with an opportunity to meet and talk to carers, as well as the council's fostering team. Before embarking on the fostering journey, many prospective fosterers will no doubt have a number of questions. "So, at the event, our fostering team will be on hand to explain why fostering is a hugely rewarding role, as well as offer the support and information needed, no matter how far along people are in their journey. The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group generally meets 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which usually take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Main St., Kirby Muxloe and start at 7.30 pm. They are normally on either a Thursday or Tuesday. Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe library, as well as on our new website, at: www.kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org Everything that relates to our heritage is here, from archaeology to 20th century recollections. We are always looking for old pictures, slides, newspaper clippings, documents, etc. relating to Kirby Muxloe’s past. Do you have any that we could borrow to copy or transcribe? Even “modern” events of the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are of interest. Do you have any photographs or slides of carnivals, processions or street parties in the village? If so we would love to see them. You can email us at info@kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org or telephone Judith on 0116 2393767 or Mike on 0116 2386026. Our next meeting will be Thursday 16th November. Peter Cousins-former L&RFHS Chairman will talk about Leicester’s famous son, Joseph Merrick, the ‘Elephant Man’.
Jacques, a Leather Merchant and Property Developer. The land had previously been owned by a consortium of local land owners: Thomas Haines, Percy Rose, Joseph Armson and Samuel Brooks. This is where he built his new premises, which was registered in Trade Directories as Harry Ireland, Plumber and Glazier, Main Street, telephone number Kirby Muxloe 65. When Harry retired, he sold the property to Jones and Overton Ltd., Electrical Contractors, who based their business there. They let the ground floor shop to a Hardware and D.I.Y. business called Craft Services. The shop is remembered as having everything you could possibly need for any D.I.Y. project! The ownership of the property then passed to Price and Cooke, Electricians, who continued to let the shop to Craft Services. In the late 1990’s, Craft Services closed and Price and Cooke sold the property to Malcolm Peck, who established a successful Post Office business there. Malcolm Peck retired a number of years ago and the Post Office changed hands but is still operating from the same site. Harry Ireland is well remembered in the village, especially during WWII. By this time, he was in his 50’s, and in any event, in a reserved occupation. He held regular dances in the Church Hall. The dances were attended mainly by the young people in the village. They enjoyed all the old-time dances, such as
the St. Bernard’s Waltz and the Military Two Step, as well as ballroom dancing, including the Waltz, the Foxtrot and the “latest thing”, the Quickstep. The dancing was accompanied by Victor Sylvester records, played on a gramophone. Local residents remember Harry being very tall, whilst his wife was very short and slight, so they made quite a spectacle on the dance floor! Harry also ran dance classes for the village, long before the advent of “Strictly”! According to records held by the Free Church, Harry he was very involved in the building of the new church, after the previous church had been destroyed by an enemy bomb in WWII. It had been decided that wherever possible local builders and craftsmen should be used in the rebuilding. Harry was responsible for “plumbing and decorator’s goods”. Quite what the extent of the latter was, we don’t know! The new Church opened in 1953. Harry passed away in 1960 and we lost a well-known figure from Kirby’s social and business life. With thanks to John Cowling for much of the research for this article.
A Walk Down Main Street In this series of articles, we take a stroll down Main Street, Kirby Muxloe, and a walk into the past. Each article will feature a shop or business on Main Street. Do you remember it or know anyone who might? If there is anything else about this, or any other business on Main Street, that you can tell us, please contact us using the email or telephone numbers above. Harry Ireland – Plumber and Glazier, 34, Main Street Harry Ireland was born in 1886, in Leicester. In the 1901 census, we find him living in Barrow on Soar with his parents, his occupation being recorded as “electrical engineer”. In 1908, he married Edith Alice Fanton, who was born in Oakham, but had moved with her family to Ratby in 1897. By 1911, Harry and Edith, together with their 8 month old daughter, Evelyn Edith, were living in Church Road, and Harry’s occupation was “plumber and glazier”, quite a change from “electrical engineer”! In the 1920’s, Harry bought a plot of land on Main Street from Mr Frances

Seasonal Issues - Latest News From Hedgehogs and minibeasts: Why not try to have a go at making a hide for a hibernating hedgehog too?! Gardeners tend to tidy their gardens in the autumn but please don’t be too tidy as hedgehogs and the minibeasts they feed on like longer grass and places under hedges.
Well we are heading into autumn and now is the time to think of the animals and wildlife that share our world as they start to increase their reserves to ensure that they survive the winter months. With a little time and effort we could all make a difference to the wildlife that might visit our gardens at this time of year.
Don’t forget to store all materials for burning away from the bonfire site and then move the material to make a safe bonfire a small distance away.
Feeding the birds: Why not make or buy a variety of foods to help the wild birds to survive the autumn and winter months? Bird cakes are quick to make and there is the added advantage of you being able to clear out your cupboards.
Moving the materials will ensure that hedgehogs, frogs, toads, newts and a myriad of minibeasts are not killed when the bonfire is lit.
Lard is the best fat to use for this (as a vegetarian I don’t tend to buy this except Fireworks: Talking of bonfires leads to the for bird cake making but we’ve tried the subject of fireworks. Ratby Primary School News....
Year 2 Walk around Ratby During the first half of the new term, Year 2 went on a walk around Ratby village to launch their new topic, ‘Street Detectives’. The topic focuses on the local area and its geography and history, and, as you can imagine, the children were very excited and enthusiastic to find out about where they live.
Blood Heart Launch Day On Monday 4th September, 2017, Year 6 had a memorable experience to kick off their topic, ‘Blood Heart.’ Mrs Steiner asked a very nice butcher to save some real lambs hearts for us to examine! We were allowed to put gloves on, hold the hearts and talk about how they feel. We identified the important parts of the heart and learnt about the important job the heart does. This was such an exciting experience and we were all proud of how brave we were! We can’t wait to find out what we will learn about next!
Blue Mullahy-Culpin
Year 4 Ferndale
They enjoyed taking clipboards and a map of the village on their walk, which started on Main Street. The children were great spotters of the historica; green signs which tell you where parts of the old village and shops used to be. After looking at old photographs, they were very keen to visit the old cinema, post office, bakery and pump square sites! They all had a great afternoon wandering the village and noting down key features on their maps using a key code too. It was fun and informative!
E of term, Year 3/4 At the beginning visited Ferndale Park in Ratby for Even some investigative work. The children had atfun time playing on all of the equipment, but the trip Throughout was for them to find out about the various forces that were involved in o making the play equipment move. They found out that gravity had a large role in making playground equipment move, as well as friction, pushing and pulling. This trip really helped the children to understand all of the forces involved as most of the children had never given it a thought!
Condover Hall Residential Year 4 visited Condover Hall between the 5th to 8th September. Everyone had a fantastic time and enjoyed having a go at all of the following activities: wet and wacky, orienteering, abseiling, kayaking, buggy build, archery, fencing, laser quest, film night and disco. Even though we had some rain at some points over the four days, the pupils did not give up. The group leaders were very impressed with how the children encouraged and supported each other. Throughout our time there we were very proud of all the children and we received lots of comments about behaviour and manners. Well done Year 4!

Year 5 Planets
Superhero Hunt
A couple of weeks ago, Mercury and Venus (Year 5) experimented to find out how far planets were from the sun. We used: a yoga ball, a grapefruit, a watermelon, peppercorn, an apple, an orange, two cherry tomatoes and a blueberry to represent the planets.
This week in Year 1 we had the frightening news that Mrs Jones had been captured! We received a note from Professor Slime and began our search for her.
We used a metre stick and a trundle wheel to measure how far apart the planets would be. They were so far apart that the orange representing Neptune rolled down the hill, which means that Neptune is furthest away from the Sun. This also helped visualise how big the planets were in comparison.
We turned into superheroes and started to plan her rescue. We created comic strips of our ideas. Don’t worry, on Friday we went on a Superhero Hunt and found Professor Slime’s secret lair and rescued Mrs Jones!
We had great fun and learnt a lot!

HEALTHMATTERS So what happens when you stop smoking? • In 20 minutes your blood pressure and pulse rate return to normal. • In 8 hours nicotine and carbon monoxide levels in your blood are reduced by half and oxygen levels return to normal, • In 24 hours carbon monoxide gets eliminated from your body and your lungs start to clear out mucus and other debris, Being the month of October I thought it would be appropriate to write about stopping smoking in line with the current campaign where thousands of people across England are taking part in what’s called “Stoptober” which is an exciting 28 day challenge to stop smoking. There are approximately 10 million adults in Britain who smoke cigarettes. Research suggests that those who successfully give up for four weeks are five times more likely to stay smoke-free. The NHS said that last year more than 160,000 people managed to stop smoking for the month of October with the Stoptober campaign. The campaign cost £5.7 million but was considered a success. So far nearly 200,000 people have pledged to take part this year. Since 1974 there has been a decline in cigarette smoking, but 20 per cent of Britons still smoke. Roughly five per cent of British men smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day and seven per cent of pregnant women continue to smoke. In the UK, around 114,000 people die every year from smoking-related illnesses and it remains one of the biggest causes of death and illness. Smokers lose on average 16 years of their life compared with non-smokers and 90 per cent of lung cancers are caused by smoking. Remember it is never too late to stop smoking. You can change your life and it is worth taking part in the stop smoking campaign.
• In 48 hours there is no nicotine in your body and your smell and taste improve. • In 72 hours later you will notice a difference in your breathing as the bronchial tubes in the lungs start to relax and your energy levels increase. • In 2-12 weeks blood circulation improves, • In 3-9 months your lung function increase by up to 10% • In 5 years the risk of a heart attack falls to half in comparison to someone still smoking. If you are interested in stop smoking this October along with thousands around the country call the Smoke free National Helpline on 0300 123 1044 or if you want to find out more call us on 01162387353. Consultation- Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Mainstream Home To School Transport Polices. Have your say on proposed changes to the Special Educational Needs (SEN) and mainstream Home to School Transport Policies Leicestershire County Council is currently undergoing a significant period of change. The council has to make £66m of savings over the next four years, this is on top of the £161m saved since 2010 – this means difficult decisions about services in all areas of the council’s work. Currently, we provide transport to nursery and school/college for approximately 400 children with SEN under five, and between the ages of 16-19. We do not have a statutory duty to provide this in the same way we do for children aged 5- 16. The proposals we are considering: • Reducing the level of discount available to children and young people from low income families for transport to nursery and post 16 education. • To stop offering council arranged taxis and minibuses to transport SEN students to post 16 education and offer a Personal Transport Budget instead • To stop providing transport to post 16 education for eligible mainstream post 16 students We are not proposing any changes to the Home to School Transport Policy for children aged 5-16, or the eligibility criteria. No decisions about these proposals have yet been made. We are committed to a wide

Arriva Time Table Changes 4th November 2017. I have been made aware that Arriva have submitted time table changes to the Traffic Commissioner I have asked officers at County Hall to look into the changes to see how they affect residents. This is a commercial decision of Arriva all of these routes are commercial routes none of which are funded by the County Council. The following is a summary of any alterations. 26 - No Change 27 - Minor timetable change. One weekday journey is changed by 7 minutes (07:32 journey brought back to 07:25 M-F from Leicester – Ratby) 29/29A/29X - The 05.59 29A journey from
Leicester M-F has been removed. A 06:22 journey has been introduced and now operates under 29X, however it does not serve Groby or Markfield. This means that the earliest time that Groby will be served by service 29 will be at 06:50 by the journey departing Leicester at 06:32. There has also been the addition of a second 06:32 journey (due to high demand) from Leicester M-F which terminates at Amazon. No journeys into Leicester have changed and there are no route changes proposed. - The 23:15 journey from Amazon to Leicester has been retimed to 23:45 to accommodate shift times, and now operates under 29X. - There are also some slight timetable changes by no more than 10 minutes. There are no route changes the impact on residents should not be significant. I will collect the new bus timetables when they are ready and make sure they are distributed to the Post Office. Parish Council offices and shops in the village.

Borough Councillors Report Cllr Ozzy O’Shea Tel 0116 2394336 or 07808585825 Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com
Anti-social Behaviour. We have been receiving reports of crowds of youths playing ball games on the green on Ash Close in Ratby. This has caused concern to local residents as the green has a no ball game sign on it and is under the control of HBBC. Residents who asked the youths to move on were initially met by foul language. We have identified some of the youths involved and explained that they cannot play ball games on this piece of land and it was upsetting some of the neighbours. To their credit, two of the youths involved have knocked on the doors of the residents involved and apologised for the distress caused. Whilst we fully support the younger members of the village trying to engage in sporting activities, the parks are the best place for this. We are also aware of late night car meets taking place in the garages at this location which also involves alcohol and loud music. These details have been passed onto the police. Furthermore, we have received complaints from other residents that overt drug dealing is taking place in cars on Whittington Drive in Ratby by the end of East Walk. Residents have taken details of the cars involved

Cllr Chris Boothby Tel 0116 2388301 or 07880 711 222 Email chris.boothby@hotmail.com
including descriptions of the occupants and again the police have been informed. Again, Ratby seems to be at the forefront of van break-ins with thieves targeting vans to steal power tools. A week last Sunday, 6 vans were broken into overnight on the Markfield Road area. We are assured that CCTV is available and as usual we are liaising with the police to try and apprehend those responsible. This sort of crime is steadily on the increase and we urge van users to remove their work tools and not leave them in the van overnight.
Go Wild Camping. Myself and Ozzy, along with officers of the Council have visited this site called the old woodlands which backs onto the paintball site and another farm because of various complaints of over use under permitted use and access issues. This site, which is privately owned, but fall within the National Forest is being used as a go back to nature campsite and advertised on a national website. Users camp there to get away from daily life and have access to fire pits and it is believed that they use permitted firearms to shoot local wildlife such as muntjac deer and rabbits and birds. We do not believe that residents are in
any danger put we would like to point out that the National Forest Organization have pointed out that a woodland management programme is being carried out which involves felling of trees and re-planting and also the public right of ways through this are are no longer public as this was only temporary. Officers at HBBC are working with the owner to establish the amount of use of the site and othe issues.
Remembrance Sunday. Chris , as Parade Marshall , is pleased to announce that the village of Ratby has been graced with the presence of a Deputy Lord Lieutenant for it's annual parade. Ratby is blessed to have such a parade and we are always overwhelmed by the public support given by residents who turn out in their hundreds. It is still not clear, however, if we will have any police support to halt the traffic so we are asking again if anybody would like to volunteer to assist with marshalling then please get in touch. Best Regards
Chris & Ozzy. Working For You.

Start applying now for secondary school places Secondary school Closing date for preferred choices is October 31 Parents with children due to start at secondary schools in Leicestershire next year are being encouraged to apply for places at their preferred schools by Tuesday, 31 October. They are being signposted to the county council's website at https://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/admissions to find out more and to start the process. “Last year, 97 per cent of Leicestershire parents submitted an online application and we encourage people to use this approach. We also want to remind parents that there is no automatic entry to any school so it is very important for applications to be submitted before the closing date of 31 October” Councillor Trevor Pendleton, county council support member for children and families To further support parents in reviewing schools and making their shortlist, a new interactive ‘Your Guide’ to education has also been launched - again available on the schools admissions page of the website - to help them focus their search and make the right decision. Schools also hold open evenings for parents to view their facilities and speak to teachers. These can be useful in helping parents to determine the best school for their child. Parents should contact a school directly to find out more information about the evenings.

Taking the first steps to a healthier lifestyle A NATIONWIDE campaign encouraging adults to get more active by building just 10 minutes of brisk walking into their daily lives is being backed by Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council. The One You campaign is encouraging adults to start improving their health by walking briskly for 10 minutes each day and to help, people are being encouraged to download the ‘Active 10’ app. This free app shows how much brisk walking they’re doing, when they can increase their pace and how they can fit more brisk walking into their day. It also sets goals and provides hints and tips to keep people going, and has been endorsed by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). Over 50,000 people have already downloaded the app, which can be found by searching ‘Active 10’ online. Chirag Ruda, the Borough Council’s Health Improvement Officer, said: “I would encourage people to take the first steps towards a healthier lifestyle by downloading this app. Over time, brisk walking can help to lower the risk of serious illnesses like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.” For more information contact Chirag on 01455 255913, email chirag.ruda@hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk or visit www.hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk/info/200102/walking

Self-access libraries set for roll-out 'Smart' libraries are set to expand across the county, after a successful trial Self-access technology is due to roll out to 15 libraries across Leicestershire as part of wider plans to save £1.3million. People who’ve registered to take part would use their library card to access the buildings, in order to borrow, return and renew items or use the public computers, wifi and printing and copying facilities. The move could increase opening hours and follows a successful trial at Syston library. Self-access technology makes it more convenient for people who work during the day or on shifts, plus parents who want to take their children to the library on the way to school.
Charity Night 14th October Ratby It is a pleasure and an Honour to be the Mayor of Hinckley and Bosworth. I have decided to support two charities during my Mayoral year they are MNDA Motor Neurone Disease and The Gurney Fund that helps Police Widows and Dependants two Charities very close to my heart.
During the four-month trial in Syston, opening hours increased by 30 hours a week and a number of people enquired about using the venue for community activities. “We have a good track record in delivering libraries differently. Despite the financial pressures, the roll-out enables us to extend the benefits seen in Syston to thousands of residents. Councillor Richard Blunt, cabinet member for communities and wellbeing ‘Smart’ library technology would be rolled out at 15 of the 16 market town libraries: Ashby, Blaby, Birstall, Broughton Astley, Coalville, Earl Shilton, Glenfield, Hinckley, Loughborough, Lutterworth, Melton, Oadby, Shepshed, Syston and Wigston Magna. This would save ÂŁ230,000. The collections hub would house archives, museums collections and educational resources, replacing five current venues – a report would be brought back to cabinet in early 2018. The ÂŁ1.3m savings are due to be made by 2020/21.

Flytipper pays the penalty
7.30pm at St Philips and St James Church, Church Lane e Ratby
A resident who flytipped two fridges on a village pavement has been given the first flytipping fixed penalty notice by Blaby District Council’s Environmental Health team.
Tickets ÂŁ8 8 Concesssions ÂŁ6
The two fridges were dumped on Moores Lane, Enderby, back in May. A vigilant resident came forward to offer a witness statement after seeing the offence take place. After investigation from the Council’s Environmental Health officers, the flytipper was bought in for an interview under caution and admitted the offence.
Sheralyn y Newman Ratbyy Brass Band Te el 0 0116 2386954
A ÂŁ400 fine was issued in what is the first penalty of its kind in the district since new powers were given to tackle small scale flytipping within the district. Fixed penalty notices are seen as an alternative to taking some flytippers to court. Councillor Iain Hewson, Portfolio Holder for Health Improvement, Leisure & Regulatory Services, said: “We hope this news gives confidence to residents to come forward if they witness any offences take place, and also emphasises just how seriously we take flytipping. “These fridges could have been disposed of legally less than two miles away at Leicestershire County Council’s Whetstone Tip. Instead the flytipper has paid a ÂŁ400 fine for his selfish actions.â€? Residents who witness flytipping can report is online by visiting www.blaby.gov.uk/flytipping, emailing environmental.health@blaby.gov.uk or calling 0116 272 7555.
