Macmillan Coffee Morning at Ratby Parish Church rooms THERE ARE now 2.5 million people in the UK living with cancer. By 2030 it will be 4 million and Macmillan want to be there for all of them. The reality is that more than one in three of us will get cancer. For most of us it will be the toughest fight we ever face. And the feelings of isolation and loneliness that so many people experience make it even harder. But you don’t have to go through it alone. The Macmillan team is with you every step of the way. Nurses and therapists can help through treatment, advisers can talk through which benefits are available and volunteers give a hand with everyday things. There is no easy way to deal with cancer but Macmillan are there every step of the way. Almost all of their work is possible only through the generosity of donations. In 2016 over £29.5 million pounds was raised nationwide. We held our very first Macmillan coffee morning in Church last year and this year we aim to do it all over again .Our coffee morning this year will be held on the 16th September in the Church Rooms. Your support will be very welcome so come and catch up over a cuppa, enjoy and bacon bap and some other some gorgeous treats – and the money we raise will help us make sure no one has to face cancer alone. There will also be a raffle and an opportunity to purchase cakes and other goodies. Any offers of cakes or raffle prizes would be very welcome Thank you Joan Hawkins

Kirby Muxloe Parish Council will remove them to a place of safety until 31st October 2017, during which time they may be claimed. The above actions are in the interest of maintaining our Cemetery as a safe tranquil and dignified environment for all of the community to pay respects to their loved ones. It is not our intention to cause any upset but we accept that some Deed Holders may find our actions difficult to accept, but would respectfully request that they think of other friends and family of the bereaved visiting the Cemetery.

For some years now, local charity Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland has campaigned to reduce the 7 out of 10 people who die without a will.

7.30pm at St Philips and St James Church, Church Lane e Ratby

Tickets ÂŁ8 8 Concesssions ÂŁ6 Tick i e ets can be obtained btained fro om the following wing locations:

To that end this year, more than twenty offices of local Solicitors have generously agreed to reduce their Will Writing charges for older people to only £35 + VAT for a single uncomplicated Will. Whilst this is a huge reduction of around £100 with no strings attached, in earlier years some people have chosen to recognise needy local older people by leaving a greatly appreciated legacy to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland or making a donation, where the need is great especially in these difficult times. There is just a week to go before this year’s offer is available from 1st September until 31st October. Hundreds of people took advantage of this superb, low - cost deal last year in what proved to be a very successful initiative by the charity. Details are available from 0116 2992233 or www.ageuk.org.uk/leics

I would like to invite residents to experience the perfect sounds of the Ratby Co-operative Brass Band.

Commenting, the Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, Tony Donovan said, “Most people appreciate that it is extremely important to make a Will, but either never get round to it or continue to put it off on the basis that they are too young and it is something that they will do when they are much older. Unfortunately 7 out of 10 people die without sorting it out, in spite of the clear benefits. By making a Will you take the pressure off those nearest and dearest to you who will receive your money and property, rather than it being left to the rules of law to decide.

I have arranged a Charity Night on Saturday 14th October 2017 – 7.30pm At St Phillips and St James Church, Church Lane, Ratby. Refreshments and a raffle will also be available on the night. Tickets can also be purchased on the night.

“Even if you have made a will, perhaps it was so long ago that it is time to consider whether it needs revising. Don’t miss this opportunity to put matters straight!

Ratby Library with Crow Pie Cafe Summer Reading - Animal Agents In the last edition I hoped that we would exceed the number of childrenwho joined the Summer Read last year which was 72. Well I’m delighted to say that we have, with a total of over 107. The children’s faces when they were presented with their Certificates and Medals have been an absolute picture. Of course the support of their parents has played a great part in this success story, so welldone to you all,Parents and children.

Free WiFi Whether customers use one of our 4 Laptops   or use their own equipment to go ‘online’ there is no cost at all. We are pleased to think that   we are providing a valuable service to people who may be having difficulties with their own equipment, printers etc. Some customers made me aware that they had printed their Boarding passes for holiday flights. But many others were involved in personal correspondence. You may ask what does the library get out of it. Well, we are happy to provide a service, but If inclined, a donation can be left in the Book exchange box or a drink and something to eat, purchased from the Café. Book exchange Many donations of books are being received

for people to take as an exchange or taken in return for a donation. We are really greatful for the additional revenue that this is creating. It is well known that in a few years libraries like ours will have to be financially self supporting. This is for the building itself with the library still the responsibility of the County Council. A new departure in donations is a number of jig saw puzzles, which we are happy to receive. Apart from the financial benefit, it is encouraging to receive this support from our customersand we will continue to provide all that we can to make a visit to the Library pleasant and rewarding. Quiz  The next Quiz will be held on Friday 15 September and will start at 7.00. Numbers are increasing And the prize for the winning team well worth the effort. Stephen Roche remains our resident Quiz Master and provides an interesting mix of questions. If you don’t know the answers at least you can learn something. Book Club The next meeting will be held on Monday 18th September at 6.30pm. The book to be discussed is To the Lighthouse by Virginia Wolfe. Wendy Deeping is the Leader of the Group and can be contacted on 0116 2390 227 if you wish to make enquiry about joining. The Membership fee is £1 per meeting and refreshments will be available to purchase Wriggly Readers Wriggly Readers will reopen on Thursday 21st September and thereafter on alternate Thursdays from 1030 to 1130. There is no charge for this but the purchase of drinks etcf rom the Café will beappreciated.

September Tea party Annette Roche has agreed to organise a tea party again this year on Saturday 16th September from 11.00am to 3.00pm.There will be a fine variety of stalls together with a number of animals that will have their life styles explained and the children an opportunity to touch or hold them. Hire space in the library for Meetings and Events I would be pleased to meet with anyone requiring a venue for an activity or a meeting, to discuss requirements, layouts etc. Volunteer recruitment Temporary difficulties are causing some volunteers to withdraw their services for short or medium terms. So we are continualy in need of replacements. Please get in touch with me for a chat and I can explain just what is involved.

LFE Film Evenings

with Cancer: Time Out

LFE Film Evenings will be showing on Thursday 5 October “Viceroy’s House”. Category: Period drama. UK 2017, 1hr 50min.

So what isY Time Out? - In some respects, Time Out can be whatever you wish it to be - it is a chance to talk to D those who understand completely, a place to seek advice and reassurance and to share experiences with others in a really relaxing environment.

New nations are rarely born in peace . . . India, 1947: Lord Mountbatten is dispatched, along with his wife Edwina, to New Delhi to oversee the country's transition from British rule to independence. Mountbatten arrives hopeful for a peaceful transference of power.

And then there are the therapies. As well as the emotional support given, complementary therapies are offered to relieve stress and discomfort and encourage Kirstie, a qualified nurse, advises “we work with  a feeling of well being.  a person as a whole, it is a very holistic approach; complementary therapies can simply make you feel better”. Coping with Cancer offers Aromatherapy, Reiki, Reflexology, Indian Head Massage and Swedish massage. Anyone up for aromatherapy? Delicate aromas drift in the atmosphere and gentle music surrounds. Perhaps a massage would be nice? There are lots of choices.

The setting is the resplendent Viceroy's House in Delhi, where the Mountbatten family and their 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants lived.

Time Out for Anita - Anita already knew of C-W-C through sharing her aunt’s experiences when she herself succumbed to a seemingly never-ending series misfortunes, some of them life threatening. An exceptionally brave and inspiring lady, Anita risked her own life to save that of her unborn baby but her many troubles were only just beginning to mount up. Fortunately C-W-C was there to help her through. Time Out gave comfort, help and understanding.

But ending centuries of colonial rule in a country divided by deep religious and cultural differences proves no easy undertaking. As Nehru, Jinnah and Gandhi came to discuss independence, conflict erupted. The consequences of the decision to divide the country reverberate to this day.

Anita’s baby daughter is now a teenager and Anita herself became a C-W-C befriender. No-one is better placed to understand and share anxieties of others than she is. Says Anita, “I am a firm believer in the power of positive thought and the strength that can result from simply choosing to be happy. Laughter? That can be the strongest of medicines.” Time Out for Marilyn - Double tragedy struck when terminal cancer struck Marilyn’s daughter and then her husband not long afterwards. Distraught and feeling alone, C-W-C was recommended to her by another cancer care organisation (and also by the NHS). Counselling was offered and Time Out was then suggested.

Welcoming and supportive through both illnesses, lasting friendships developed at Time Out. Marilyn still visits Time Out eight years later and appreciates the opportunities to share her experiences with others. For Marilyn, Time Out is a place for comfort and reassurance, a chance to chat and a chance to listen. “Sometimes we simply swap our favourite recipes; there aren’t any rules” she says “I don’t think there’s anywhere else like this” If you would like to visit a Time Out session close to where you live, simply visit our website for the address and details of our timetable. Flag Raising of the Merchant Navy Day Flag at Ratby The ceremony was carried out by the Mayor and Mayoress of Hinckley & Bosworth, Mr Ozzy O’Shea and Mrs Jenny O’Shea, both of whom reside in the village of Ratby. Mr O’Shea is a County Councillor, Borough Councillor and also a Parish Councillor and Mrs O’Shea is Vice-Chairman of the Parish Council. On raising the flag the Mayor stated “We owe a great debt of gratitude to the men and women who supported our sailors, troops etc., during the course of WWII and it is only fitting that we acknowledge their dedication to duty and the sacrifices some ultimately paid.” “WELL, it only lasted 24 hours!! The flag raised on Friday, 1st September in honour of those who served in the Merchant Navy during WWII, some of whom gave their lives supporting our servicemen, was unceremoniously taken down before Sunday, 3rd September, the official Merchant Navy Day. It’s such a pity that some mindless people do not have the courtesy to allow those of us who do care and remember what these brave people did. The Parish Council will continue to honour those people who gave their lives in service of this country so that we could live in freedom. It is hoped that this mindless action will not recur in the future.”

Bored, lonely, nothing to do on a Wednesday afternoon? We can offer fellowship, friendship, outing activities and the ever welcome cuppa. The Ivy Club has been meeting on Wednesdays for the last sixty seven years (yes that’s right 67 years) originally at the St Mary’s Hall (a wooden building), but now at the Braunstone West Community Centre still on St Mary’s Avenue. Our outings are for amenities or to a garden centre for tea and cake, approx every six weeks. ď Ž

Quizzes, bingo, beetle drive, dominoes and even a snakes and ladder competition are amongst the things we do. We have visits from Terry Locke, plus keyboard with a varied selection of tunes. Michael and Peter keep us clothed and shoe with their selection of merchandise. At Christmas, Easter and Harvest Festival, the vicar and his wife come to join us in a service. So don’t be lonely, come and try us. A warm and friendly welcome awaits you. We meet on Wednesdays from 1-45pm until 4pm at the B.W.C.C, St Mary’s Avenue, LE3 3FT.

Fire Safety in Council Dwellings Following the tragedy at Grenfell Tower in London, HBBC has carried out a fire risk and safety management assessment on it's Housing Stock, Sheltered Housing, Hostel Accommodation and all other council owned buildings. This was in regard to wether any of the above were insulated with the ACM cladding that was used at Grenfell. Following the assessment, our stock does not have ACM cladding and we do not have any stock over 3 storeys high. Further regard was given to our sheltered schemes. On the advice of Leicestershire Fire and Rescue, we are not at this time required to fit sprinklers in individual rooms. Details of Tenants and any mobility issues have been recorded and are on hand to the emergency services should a fire break out. We do, however have to fit smoke alarms in the general housing stock and it is the tenants responsibility to check and replace the battery.

Council Housing Satisfaction Survey All Council Tenants were sent out this survey at the end of 2016 and we had a response rate of 32%. We asked about questions on repairs, new tenancies, neighbourhood rents and sheltered housing. These questions were about satisfaction or dissatisfaction. Across the board, the overall opinion was an average improvement in terms of satisfaction of 18%. Tenants are now far happier with how the Council listens to them, carries out repairs, rent increases and above all feel that their area or community is a happier and safer place to live than when the last survey was carried out in 2013.

Cllr Chris Boothby Tel 0116 2388301 or 07880 711 222 Email chris.boothby@hotmail.com

Developing Communities Fund Once again we are asking Community Groups in the area to consider applying for this new fund to improve their local community with larger scale projects. Although we already have the Parish and Community Initiative Fund of up to £12,000, the DCF is much larger with a 3 year budget of £1.4million. Last year HBBC had 13 expression's of Interest from 11 Parishes. Four were from Community Groups and seven from Parish Councils. So get your thinking caps on, further details are available from HBBC.

Remembrance Day Parade This years Remembrance Sunday is on Sunday 12th November. As usual, Ratby will be having it's Parade and Chris (as Parade Marshall) is expecting the usual large turnout. Unfortunately, as Mayor Ozzy will be in Hinckley and Mr Lee Moult has kindly stepped in to do the flag raising duties. Chris has also requested the presence of a Deputy Lord Lieutenant to attend and is awaiting confirmation.

the local Authority can order a temporary road closure notice. Volunteers with high-viz jackets and using barrier signs from LCC can be used. This may not be needed but if you would like to help should there be no cover then please get in touch. Best Regards

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group generally meets 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which usually take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Main St., Kirby Muxloe and start at 7.30 pm. They are normally on either a Thursday or Tuesday.

medicines, as in the early years pre-packed medicines did not exist. The chemist’s dispensing area would be full of bottles of tinctures and medicines, a pestle and mortar, different sized bottles, jars and corks, and white paper to hold powder medicines.

Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe library, as well as on our new website, at: www.kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org Everything that relates to our heritage is here, from archaeology to 20th century recollections. We are always looking for old pictures, slides, newspaper clippings, documents, etc. relating to Kirby Muxloe’s past. Do you have any that we could borrow to copy or transcribe? Even “modern” events of the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are of interest. Were you a pupil at Kirby Muxloe Primary School in the 1940’s or 50’s? Do you still have any of your class photographs? If so, we would love to see them and take a copy. These memorabilia need to be saved! When they’re gone they’re gone? You can email us at info@kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org or telephone Judith on 0116 2393767 or Mike on 0116 2386026. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 19 September, when there will be a talk entitled ‘Medieval Manor Houses in Leicestershire’ – speaker Peter Liddle, MBE, former County Archaeologist and well-known for his appearances on “Time Team”.

A Walk Down Main Street In this series of articles, we take a stroll down Main Street, Kirby Muxloe, and a walk into the past. Each article will feature a shop or business on Main Street. Do you remember it or know anyone who might?

Wilson Tew’s chemist shop on Main Street before the bombing of 1940. Courtesy of the Will Walker collection Fast forward to 1928, when Arthur, at the age of 52, together with his wife Edith and her son Jim Lucas, are living in Kirby Muxloe. Arthur was looking forward to a few quiet years before retirement, or so he thought! During the bombing of the village in 1940, the chemist’s shop was badly damaged and

had to be demolished. This was due to its proximity to the Free Church, which was razed to the ground by the bombs. The Tew family then went to live with the Wilshere sisters (Olive and Marjory) at Guillet Close on Gullet Lane, until alternative accommodation could be found. Jonathan Wilshere in his memoires remembered going to the chemist’s shop on the Saturday after the bombing and helping to clear the stock – he was allowed to keep the soap (Wright’s Coal Tar), which lasted the rest of the war. After the bombing the Junior football pavilion was moved from the Recreation ground to the now cleared Main street site, and was used as a temporary chemist’s shop, until 1949, when the Tew’s house and shop were rebuilt. Mr Tew is remembered fondly by one late resident as a “nice little man, who was sceptical about new drugs”. He is also remembered for having a basket on the scales in his shop, ready to weigh any baby that was brought in. As part of his services as the village chemist, Mr Tew developed most peoples’ photographs. He was a keen photographer himself and had a number of albums in his shop which people could look at whilst waiting for their prescriptions. Mrs Tew is remembered for handing out honey sandwiches, a treat for boys who were mainly brought up on dripping! Mr Tew eventually retired in 1963, aged 87. He celebrated his 100th birthday in 1976, dying the following year. For many years after his retirement, Kirby Muxloe did not have a village pharmacy. In 1999, a new pharmacy opened, to be taken over in 2006 by the very popular “Village Pharmacy”.

If there is anything else about this, or any other business on Main Street, that you can tell us, please contact us using the email or telephone numbers above.

Arthur Wilson Tew – chemist, 9, Main Street Kirby Muxloe Arthur Wilson Tew was born in Warwick in 1876, one of five siblings, four boys and one girl. His father worked as a Gas Works manager and two of Arthur’s brothers, at least, followed their father to find employment at the Gas Works. Arthur had set his sights on a different path and we find him in the 1901 census living in South Audley Street, in London’s Mayfair, and working as a Chemist’s drug assistant. Soon Arthur became a member of the pharmaceutical society (M.P.S.), holding that qualification for over 60 years. The life of a village “chemist” was very different to the life of the village pharmacist today. Generally, the chemist was responsible for mixing up

Alzheimer’s Society seeks volunteers to help make a difference to the lives of people with dementia Alzheimer’s Society in Leicestershire and Rutland is looking for volunteers to support people with dementia keep doing the things they love. The charity has launched a recruitment drive for ‘Side By Side volunteers’ to work across both counties. The service involves people with dementia and volunteers doing things such as visiting the gym, walking or visiting places of interest together. There are 12000 people living with dementia in Leicestershire and 600 people with dementia in Rutland, and that number is expected to rise. Suna Tilley, Alzheimer’s Society Side By Side Coordinator for Leicestershire and Rutland said: “The sad reality is that people with dementia can often become isolated and find it difficult to remain part of their community. Taking part in hobbies or activities they previously enjoyed can seem too difficult. This is what Side by Side aims to change. We currently have 36 volunteers in Leicestershire and Rutland and we need to double that number. It's a flexible way to give your time and you really can make a huge difference to someone's life.’ Volunteers are given training and are reimbursed for expenses. Anyone interested in finding out more about volunteering for Alzheimer’s Society’s in Leicestershire and Rutland should contact Suna Tilley Side By Side Coordinator on 0116 2311113

Scheme to stop HGVs going through Leicestershire village Work is nearing completion on an £8,000 scheme to stop HGVs illegally travelling through the centre of a Leicestershire village. Leicestershire County Council has installed three bell bollards and is set to put up new signs in High Street, Desford, in a bid to stop HGVs using the main route and keep pedestrians safe. The bell bollards have been placed on the footpath in High Street at the B582 roundabout, while the standard bollard at the junction of High Street and Peckleton Lane is set to remain. The road already has a 7.5 tonne weight restriction which has been in place for more than 20 years, but the council is introducing the additional measures after residents expressed concerns that the restrictions were being ignored by some drivers. The traffic calming scheme, run in partnership with Desford Parish Council and Neovia, which has contributed to the initiative, was drawn up following a safety review of the village. The report found that HGVs were mounting footpaths, damaging properties and getting stuck on the local roads. The installation of the safety measures is taking place during the school holidays, to minimise disturbances for local residents, as four way traffic lights were required at the roundabout to install the bollards. It is expected that the all of the work will be complete by September.

Year 6 production of ‘A Big Green Adventure’ Near the end of term, all of Year 6 did a production called “A Big Green Adventure” about animals living in the forest and how we humans can care for the environment better. Although it was hard work learning our lines and practising the songs, it was a good experience for us and we all enjoyed it. We had amazing costumes, especially Finlay as he was a can of corned beef! We all giggled because on Tuesday at the end of the  production, Mrs Jones said she definitely would not go to Toby for a car! We got complemented on our singing by everyone, even though we are one of the smallest Year 6 groups ever! It was a wonderful show to finish off our time in Year 6.

HEALTHMATTERS As the days are getting shorter and average temperatures have dropped, it marks that summer is coming to an end. It is around this time where the hay-fever season stops and we approach the cold and flu season. Everyone has experienced these conditions at some point in their lives. Colds and flus affect 15 million people each year in the UK. Often people make unnecessary trips to their GP when they should be resting at home. This creates a massive burden on the GP’s time when they could be dealing with more serious conditions. Colds and flu share some of the same symptoms (sneezing, coughing, sore throat), but are caused by different viruses. Flu can be much more serious than a cold. If you're generally fit and healthy, you can usually manage the symptoms of a cold or flu yourself without seeing a doctor. Look after yourself by resting, drinking non-alcoholic fluids to avoid dehydration and avoiding strenuous activity. Painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can relieve aches and pains. A cold is a mild viral infection of the nose, throat, sinuses and upper airways. There are around 200 viruses that cause colds. Symptoms of a cold include: • Runny nose, beginning with clear mucus that develops into thicker, green mucus as the cold progresses • Blocked nose

Sore throat

• Sneezing

Cough

People with a cold may also suffer with a mild fever, earache, tiredness and headache. Symptoms develop over one or two days and can last for up to two weeks. Usually it's a self-limiting infection – this means it gets better by itself without the need for prescription treatment and no need to see your GP. Flu is a highly infectious and common viral illness. It's not the same as the common cold. Flu is caused by a different group of viruses and symptoms tend to be more severe and last for longer. You can catch flu – short for influenza – all year round, but it is especially common in winter, which is why it is also known as 'seasonal flu'. Flu causes a sudden high temperature, headache and general aches and pains, tiredness and sore throat. You can also lose your appetite, feel nauseous and have a cough. Flu symptoms can make you feel so exhausted and unwell that you have to stay in bed and rest until you feel better. A third of the population think flu is just a bad cold, but each year thousands of people die of complications following flu. So it is worth knowing the difference between the two. The symptoms of flu and the common cold can be very similar. Here's how to tell the difference: • Flu symptoms come on quickly and include fever and aching muscles. They also make you feel too unwell to continue your usual activities • Cold symptoms come on gradually and affect just your nose and

COLDS AND FLU throat. The symptoms are fairly mild so you can still get around and are usually well enough to go to work. Whether you have a Cold or Flu, there is usually no need to see your GP as they can be treated symptomatically at the Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe. Because these infections are viral, prescribed antibiotics will not work. However, you should see your GP if your symptoms have lasted longer than 2 weeks, are 65 or over, are pregnant, have a long-term medical condition such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, kidney or neurological disease or have a weakened immune system. This could mean that flu can be more serious for you, and your doctor may want to prescribe antiviral medication. Antiviral medicine can lessen the symptoms of flu and shorten its duration, but treatment needs to begin soon after flu symptoms start for it to be effective. So it would be wise to see your GP straightaway. The best way to protect yourself from getting flu is by having the flu vaccine. The vaccine stimulates your body’s immune system to make antibodies to attack the flu virus. Antibodies are proteins that recognise and fight-off germs, such as viruses, that have invaded your blood. If you catch the flu virus after you've had the vaccination, your immune system will recognise it and immediately produce antibodies to fight it. It may take 10-14 days for your immunity to build up fully after you have had the flu shot. The antibodies that protect you from the flu will then gradually decrease over time. The flu strains can also change from year to year. Therefore, you need to have a flu jab every year to ensure that you have the best protection against the latest strain of the virus. During October each year a flu vaccine is available free on the NHS. The NHS targets certain ‘at risk’ groups and vaccinates them for free. These groups are: • Anyone over the age of 65 • Pregnant women • Children and adults with an underlying health condition (particularly long-term heart or respiratory disease) • Children and adults with weakened immune systems If you fall into one of the groups above it would be wise to book in for a flu jab, this is now available FREE from pharmacies as well as GP surgeries. So please book in for a flu jab. If you would like to make an appointment simply call us on 01162387353. So during the next few months if you develop any symptoms of Cold or Flu, make your first port of call the Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe, where our highly trained Pharmacists will help you to treat your condition, and if needed refer you to your GP appropriately. As part of this, we need to determine what the new services should offer so that they meet the needs of the people who use them.

Remember if in doubt I am always available and willing to give you advice.

This consultation is about ‘integrated sexual health services’. This includes contraceptive services and prevention, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections. These services can be used by people no matter where they live. It does not include the HIV treatment and care services that are provided by University Hospitals of Leicester.

East Midlands Rail Franchise Consultation The Department of Transport are seeking your views on the future of the East Midlands rail franchise to ensure the new franchise delivers the best railway for: • Passengers • Communities • Businesses The purpose of this consultation is to: • Explain the planned process and timescales for awarding the rail franchise • Provide information about the current franchise services and our aims for the new franchise • Seek your views on all aspects of the rail service so we can ensure the new franchise delivers the best possible railway for passengers, communities and business • Below is a link to the Department for Transport website. www.gov.uk/ government/consultations /future-of-east-midlands-rail-franchise Public consultation events Leicester Thursday 21st September 2017 African Caribbean Centre Maidstone Road, Leicester, LE2 0UE

Sexual Health Services Consultation Sexual health services are currently jointly commissioned by Leicester City, Leicestershire County and Rutland County Councils. These contracts end on 31 December 2018. As a result, sexual health services need to be re-procured across all three local authorities.

Why We Are Consulting The contract for our current sexual health services for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland ends next year and so we would like your views to help determine what the new services should offer and how they will work. In addition we also want to highlight future sexual health services available in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and how people will be able to access them. We need to understand how people might be affected by any proposed changes to how we run our sexual health services. This is why we are asking members of the public, services users, staff and partner organisations to comment on the proposed changes. The proposed changes will be described in more detail in each section of this consultation. A summary of the proposed changes is also available on the first summary page of the questionnaire. The consultation continues until Monday, 16 October. To view the consultation, visit: https://consultations.leicester.gov.uk/ communications/sexual-health-servicesreview/ I would like to thank residents and councillors for your continued support. Juggling smartphones and children YOU LOVE your smartphone. Of course you do. But is it harming your relationship with your children? Research has found that children behave worse when parents spend too much time on their smartphones. Children who are trying to interact with their parents, only to be suddenly ‘dropped’ without warning, while the parent engages instead with the smartphone, show their frustration in a variety of unsophisticated ways. They may whine, sulk, have tantrums or show signs of hyperactivity or restlessness. A child behaviour expert at the University of Michigan advises: ‘Setting boundaries can help parents keep smartphones and other mobile technology from interrupting quality time. We know that parents’ responsiveness to their kids changes when they are using mobile technology, and that their device use may be associated with less than ideal interactions with their children.” But she added that it is indeed difficult for parents to cope with both “important and attention-grabbing information” coming in via the devices, and at the same time with social and emotional information coming in from their children – and to process both effectively.

After making a hugely successful debut last year, LOROS is pleased to announce that Full Steam Ahead is returning for 2017. The Hospice is once again teaming up with The Great Central Railway for the event, giving participants the chance to take a walk through the beautiful Leicestershire countryside before riding a train from Rothley Station. Bookings are now being taken for the event, which is taking place on Saturday 1st October but with ticket numbers limited and last year’s event selling out within weeks, people are being urged to secure their slot as soon as possible. LOROS Fundraising Co-ordinator Dave Nicklin said: “Last year’s Full Steam Ahead was without a doubt a huge success, so it was a no brainer when we decided to bring it back for a second year running. “We’re making it bigger and better this time round, with a range of short and long distance walks for participants to choose from.” More than 200 people took part in the event last year, with that number set to triple this time round, with 600 tickets up for grabs. Those taking part this time round, can choose to walk five, eight, nine or 10 miles, each of which will end with a complimentary hog roast. “This event is one for all the family, with dogs more than welcome to come along too; they’re even allowed to ride the train,” added Dave. “We raised £5,000 from last year’s Full Steam Ahead and we’re hoping to raise that amount once again, plus more.” Adult tickets for this event, which is sponsored by Western Power Distribution, start at £8, for the nine mile route, which is a walk only and no train ride. For all other route options, adult tickets cost £18, with under 12’s £12 and under 3’s free. For more information or to buy tickets visit loros.co.uk/steam

Park and Ride fares to change this month The cost of using the city and county’s Park and Ride service will change this month. Leicestershire County Council and Leicester City Council will be reducing the cost of a longer-term season ticket for commuters to encourage more motorists to use the service and help to reduce congestion on the roads. From Monday, 4 September, people buying a 52-week ticket from September will see the cost of their ticket drop from ÂŁ420 to ÂŁ320. Those who decide to purchase a 26-week ticket will pay ÂŁ160 instead of ÂŁ230, while the price of a 13-week ticket will be reduced from ÂŁ130 to ÂŁ80. In what will be the first significant changes made to fares on the service since 2009, the cost of other Park and Ride tickets will increase. The cost of a day ticket will rise from ÂŁ3 to ÂŁ3.50, with a group day ticket – for a car and up to 5 people – increasing from ÂŁ3.50 to ÂŁ4. Meanwhile, fares for concessionary tickets are also changing. The Park and Cycle scheme will also see drivers taking part paying ÂŁ50 per year to park their cars and complete their journey to the city centre by bike. All of Leicester’s Park and Ride services – operating from Enderby, Meynell’s Gorse and Birstall – are provided jointly by Leicestershire County Council and Leicester City Council. Councillor Adam Clarke, assistant city mayor for the environment, said: “We know that cost is a key factor when people decide how to make their journeys, so we’ve looked at how we can make our Park and Ride services more attractive to those who regularly drive into the city centre. “Under the proposed new, simpler pricing structure, a season ticket holder who commutes to the city centre five times a week would pay just over ÂŁ1 per day to leave their car in our secure car parks and travel into the city centre on a comfortable bus, in designated bus lanes, with free WiFi. “Compared to the costs of all-day parking in the city centre, this clearly represents good value for money, and we hope that it will encourage more commuters to switch to Park & Ride.â€? More information on the Park and Ride service, including current timetables and fares, is available by visiting www.leicesterparkandride.co.uk

BAG A BABY BARGAIN AT NCT LOUGHBOROUGH NEARLY NEW SALE Savvy parents and parents-to-be in Charnwood can find top quality baby and children’s clothes, toys and equipment at the next NCT (National Childbirth Trust) Nearly New Sale. NCT Loughborough Branch Nearly New Sale is on Sunday 17th September at Loughborough Students’ Union from 11.30am to 1.30pm (11am entry for NCT members only). Please note that this is a change of day from previous sales, which have been held on Saturdays. Entry to the sale is £1 per adult (children free) and this money goes directly to the NCT charity. Parents can get more details online at www.nct.org.uk/lougborough.

NCT Nearly New Sales offer excellent quality used baby and children’s items, with clothing up to age 14. Baby products on the high street can be pricey but shoppers at the NCT sale can save up to 75% on the price of most goods. What’s more, the Loughborough sale is laid out by department so shoppers can easily find what they are looking for and compare similar items from different sellers without needing to go around lots of different stalls. Departments include clothing (arranged by gender and age), shoes, books, bedding, pushchairs, travel, toys and games. 

Families with baby and toddler items they no longer need can ensure they go to a good home through the sale. They’ll make some cash too as   sellers keep up to 70% of the proceeds. Please check the website for more information on registering as a seller and whether or not spaces are still available; spaces usually fill up well in advance of the sale. One way in which the NCT charity is helping families locally is through the Loughborough branch’s community fund. This sees over ÂŁ500 of vouchers given away for each sale to families in need, distributed through midwives, health visitors, schools, nurseries and other local organisations/ professionals. The deadline for applications for the September sale is the end of August and the branch would welcome any applications. In order to apply, please email lougborough@nct.org.uk, stating how many families you are applying for vouchers for and some information on their situation, for example the number and ages of children; this helps the branch to determine what value of voucher would be appropriate. Alternatively, health and social care professionals can apply to spend the money on behalf of families they work with if they may be unable to attend the sale themselves. Michelle Hamilton, Joint branch coordinator for NCT Loughborough, says: “We have been delighted with the impact our community fund has had over the last few years and it is a wonderful way of our branch helping families on a very local level. It allows vulnerable families to spend the vouchers on the items they really want and need. Our volunteers ensure that the quality of the goods at our sales is excellent so these families and all our other shoppers can bag some real bargains. Whether you’re buying, selling or both you can be sure you’re helping to support other parents in the Loughborough area by funding NCT’s vital work.â€? Nearly New Sales are open to everyone, not just NCT members, and there are over 600 held annually in the UK. The income generated from these sales helps the charity support parents, fund helplines, provide breastfeeding counsellors, train antenatal teachers and offer many more services. Latest News From Animals Are Amazing!

We are all aware of a dog’s keen sense of smell which is thousands of times more sensitive than a human’s.

I share my home with three cats. Not only does each one look different, they also have different likes and dislikes. Each one has a favourite place to sleep. Two of them prefer the outdoors. One is very affectionate, another dislikes being picked up. One is outgoing and sociable, another is nervous. They like different food and each has his or her unique personality. However I know for certain that if I accidentally tread on a paw or tail the response will be the same. They yelp and run away and hide because they have been hurt and it is painful.

The heaviest weight lifted unaided by a human is 460kg. A gorilla can lift 2,000kg (as heavy as 30 humans). But the record has to go to the dung beetle which can pull 1,141 times its own body weight. This is equal to an average person pulling six double deck buses full of people!

For many years people believed that animals couldn’t feel pain. They thought that animals were not conscious and therefore were unaware of anything that happened or was done to them. If animals yelped in pain people thought it was a mechanical reaction, like a clock striking at certain times. People thought that all animals were dumb or stupid and had no physical or emotional feelings.

The examples of animal skills I have given are physical and can be measured. Animal sentience however can’t be measured but can be observed. There are hundreds of true stories that illustrate this which will be the topic of another article.

However in the last forty years interest in animal behaviour increased and with the help of modern technology scientists have made many discoveries. Not only are animals capable of skills thought to be unique to humans, but they also experience physical pain and pleasure and a wide range of feelings such as happiness, sadness, boredom, distress and excitement. Such feelings are called sentience and this means that animals are conscious and are aware of their surroundings and what happens to them. What they experience matters to them as much as our experiences matter to us.

A quotation attributed to Albert Einstein seems appropriate, “Every body LV D JHQLXV %XW LI \RX MXGJH D Ć“VK E\ LWV DELOLW\ WR FOLPE D WUHH LW ZLOO OLYH LWV OLIH EHOLHYLQJ LW LV VWXSLGĹ?

Humans have a massive effect on the lives of billions of animals. Our superiority has resulted in ignoring their individuality, their feelings and their needs. Increasing our knowledge of animals is crucial in improving their lives. They are not stupid, unfeeling mechanical objects, here only for our use and exploitation. They all deserve our compassion, respect and understanding. Elizabeth Allison RSPCA Woodside vice- president

A landmark discovery about animal behaviour was their ability to use WRROV D VNLOO SUHYLRXVO\ WKRXJKW WR EH XQLTXHO\ KXPDQ 7KH\ FDQ Ć“QG objects to enable them to carry out tasks and modify objects to make them more useful. Tool use has been observed in many animals including chimps, orang-utans, dolphins, elephants, otters, crows, rooks parrots and octopuses. Other abilities previously thought to be uniquely human include planning ahead, learning by watching others, having a sense of right and wrong and looking after each other. Some animals play tricks on one another and have a sense of fun. Animals communicate with one another, not necessarily by sounds but also by touch, smell and body language. What we now know means that the difference between animals and humans is not as great as previously thought. It is unlikely there will ever be the equivalent of a Leonardo da Vinci, Beethoven or Shakespeare in the non human animal kingdom.
