Holiday at Home event for Senior Citizens at Ratby Church Rooms
For 3 days the church rooms in Ratby and the church were alive with a variety of activities for our senior citizens in and around Ratby. This is the second year we have held this and everyone who attended informed us that they all had a wonderful time and enjoyed the variety of activities on offer as well as all of the food. We have to thank the Co-operative society for their generous donation which enabled us to provide great food for all who attended during the 3 days and Charles Geary for providing us with lovely bread. Duiring the three days we cooked and served around 90 meals and at the end of the 3 days we finished with a film show in the church and a delicious afternoon tea. I would like to give my sincere thanks to Pamela, Tony, Sophie and Sandra (the dream team) Poppy Flower arrangements made at Holiday at home for their time and commitment to make this week special for everyone and to those who attended to lead sessions. One of the big events of the week was the poppy project in which partipants helped in the making of poppies and beautiful flower arrangements for the church for the 100th anniversary in November. The church will be open on the 10th November for the public to visit to see the results of their work . Joan Hawkins

KIRBY MUXLOE LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY HUB The Blue Potts Cafe We have been running a competition for a name for our cafe. There were many entries and the winner is Graham Beck with his suggestion of The Blue Potts Cafe. Blue Potts Lane once ran the length of what is now Kirby Lane, Station Road and Hedgerow Lane. There was a Blue Potts farmhouse and alehouse which took its name from the colour of its chimney pots. So this name for the cafe provides a nice historical connection to the village. Many thanks to all who took part, and many congratulations to Graham.
APPEAL!!! We have been open for 18 months now, supported by our small army of volunteers, who have been absolutely splendid in keeping this facility available to the village. Inevitable, there has been some drop-off in the number of volunteers, for entirely legitimate reasons. If you were one of the original volunteers and would now like to resume, please do – you will receive a very warm welcome and, if you feel that you cannot remember how to do things, we will make sure that you are paired with an
experienced volunteer. Equally, if you would like to be a new volunteer, do come in to the Library and talk to us. As we have said before, it can be immensely rewarding to feel that you are contributing to the well-being of your community, and it is a chance to make new like-minded friends. By the same token, we need new joiners. Much has been written about the value of Libraries to the community, in so many ways. It is so much more than just a Library. You get access to the county’s extensive book stock and to various websites such as Which? and Ancestry. You can relax in a warm and friendly environment with a cup of coffee, use the computers, browse magazines, get local information, play board games and chat with friends. It would be a great shame if we were unable to keep it running and your support, by way of joining the Library, will help to avoid this. Equally, as a community-managed facility, we need to raise some £8,000 per year to remain open. Quite a lot of this is generated by the cafe, but by no means all. Your help in supporting events that we mount, by donations, by ideas and by general help is really important. A lot of people are giving a good deal of their own time to maintaining the Library’s presence and support from the
community itself is both needed and valued. In brief, the old adage of use us or lose us is very pertinent in this context. We look forward to seeing you!
Wriggly Readers We are hoping to double the amount of Wriggly Reader sessions from monthly to fortnightly. In order to do this, we need volunteers who are experienced with young pre-school children and/or enjoy working with them through singing, story-telling and reading books. If you are interested and feel that you have something to offer, we can train you. The time commitment is only 45 minutes per session and you can help with as many or as few sessions as you want. You would always be working alongside an experienced volunteer. Again, drop in and talk to us if you are interested.
Forthcoming Events We are planning a quiz night in October or November, and a book sale in October. Watch this space for more news about these. Our next cake and coffee morning at The Blue Potts Cafe is on Saturday 22nd September from 10.00 – 1.00. We look forward to seeing you then!
Macmillan Coffee Morning at Ratby Parish Church Rooms, Church Lane, Ratby The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer. Macmillan Cancer Support ask people all over the UK to host their own Coffee Mornings and donations on the day are made to Macmillan. Last year alone the coffee mornings raised millions of pounds and this year they are aiming to raise even more. Our coffee morning this year will be held on the 29th September in the Church Rooms. Your support will be very welcome so come and catch up over a cuppa, enjoy and bacon bap and some other some gorgeous treats – and the money we raise will help us make sure no one has to face cancer alone. There will be an opportunity to purchase cakes and other goodies. Please support this worthy event. Any offers of cakes or raffle prizes would be very welcome Thank you Joan Hawkins

County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com Dear john.smith@hotmail.com This is just a quick confirmation that you added a new email address (ewib*******@yahoo.com)
New Foot/Cycle Path Sacheverell Way Opposite Laundon Way Groby I updated residents in June regarding the new footpath/cycle path that runs from Sacheverell way to the Ivanhoe line. The path is being installed on behalf of Wilson Bowden Properties, this is part of a planning condition from the Optimus Point development in Glenfield. This will no doubt improve the footpath links between Groby and Glenfield. However I was made aware that both sides of the fence had barbed wire running along the top section. I made enquiries with officers at the County Council as this is not ideal for children and cyclists using the path. Officers have spoken to the contractors and I have been assured the barbed wire will be removed.

HMRC Scams I have been made aware from residents of two Scams over the past couple of weeks that two scams are circulating. The first is concerning. HMRC Telephone Scam Two residents have received telephone calls from a female purporting to be from the HMRC. The female told the victims of the call that they needed to call 02071936823. She told the victims that they had paperwork. The victims were told to ring back as a matter of urgency or they would send someone round with a warrant for their arrest. You can imagine how distressing this was to the residents which I visited and put their minds at rest HMRC would never make calls to you. They would put any debt or credit in writing. I have passed these details on to trading standards who I work closely with and they are investigating all these scams. HMRC Email Scam This is an automatically generated email. Stay Tuned to Fraud During August, Action Fraud have launched a campaign urging the public to #StayTunedToFraud, as recent published figures show that £6.5 million has been lost to gift card fraud. Fraudsters contact victims, usually the elderly and vulnerable, purporting to be from organisations such as HMRC. They frighten victims into paying non-existent debts with iTunes cards, which can be bought at most local retailers. Fraudsters are using online store gift cards to collect money from victims because they can be easily redeemed and sold on. The fraudsters don’t need the physical card to redeem the value and will instead use tactics to persuade victims to purchase gift cards in large amounts and read out the serial code on the back over the phone. More recently, fraudsters are requesting Steam Cards as a way of gaining upfront payment. How to protect yourself from gift card fraudsters: • Gift cards, including App Store and iTunes gift cards can only be used to purchase goods and services from the retailer named on the card. Never provide the numbers on the back of iTunes Gift Cards to someone you don't know. • No genuine organisation will ask you to pay taxes, bills or fees using iTunes Gift Cards, or any other type of voucher. If you’re contacted by anyone that asks you to do this, you’re very likely the target of a scam. • Always question unsolicited requests for your personal or financial information in case it’s a scam. Even if someone knows your basic details (such as your name and address), it doesn’t mean they are genuine. • Genuine banks or other trusted organisations won't pressure you to make a financial transaction on the spot. If some thing feels wrong then it’s usually right to question it. • If you think you have been a victim of fraud, report it to Action Fraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040. • Although this is a national campaign, this is an issue that is significantly affecting vulnerable people in Leicestershire and so

it would be much appreciated if you can raise awareness where you can. I will be looking to promote to other partners and networks but thought that this would be good information for you to have at hand when working in the community.
Banking Refunds part of investor Compensation Last week I visited an elderly couple who received had received a letter from the above company asking them for their bank details in order to claim banking charges back. What did concern me was the fact they had the full names address and date of births for both occupants. On checking the details they appeared to be another company trying to make a profit out of claiming back bank charges which any resident could do free for themselves. I have referred the details to trading standards. Please be careful who you pass your bank details to.

COPS is a UK registered charity dedicated to helping the families of police officers who have lost their lives whilst on duty. We aim to ensure that survivors have all the help they need to cope with such a tragedy, and that they remain part of the police family as they rebuild their lives. Only another survivor can fully understand what new survivors endure, that shared experience is the basis for our peer support programme. COPS enables survivors to help survivors, the extent of help provided will always be controlled by the new survivor. Sometimes an
understanding listener is needed. Sometimes more practical help is required. Whatever the need, COPS will be able to put survivors in touch with those who truly understand. COPS is independent of the police service and was founded in March 2003 by Jim McNulty and Christine Fulton (MBE). Jim was a retired police officer from Strathclyde Police. Christine is the widow of PC Lewis Fulton who was murdered on duty in Glasgow in 1994. Christine's experience of that tragedy gave her a unique understanding of the overwhelming grief and confusion that is encountered by new survivors. COPS makes contact with the survivors of every officer who loses their life on duty, explaining what COPS does and inviting them to make contact when they are ready for such support.

We are gettting an increasing number of car drivers actually asking us for permission to use the car park which we appreciate. Of course the park is still private property but enquirers are pointed towards the donation box in the library or the green box in the chip. This will be particularly helpful for the upkeep of the car park and surrounding grounds so your donations will therefore be very welcome.

Library, St Bart’s Tea Shop (Church Hall, Main St., Tuesdays 2:30-4:30pm) and Castle Opticians on Main Street. Price £6. Read all about the fallen in WW1, the work of the Air Raid Protection Wardens in WW2, the fundraising and rebuilding of the Free Church after the bombing of 1940 and finally – more tales from village folk long ago. PLEASE NOTE: our next meeting will be on Tuesday September 18th when the subject will be “Significant and Unusual” – an Iron Age Feasting Site at Kirby Muxloe. Speaker: John Thomas.
Kirby’s first National School (later Parson’s Farewell)
In the first half of the 19th century, education in Kirby Muxloe took place at a number of small schools run by a variety of people, including Mrs Elizabeth Chesterton, wife of the village blacksmith. A Church School was established in 1854. Then in 1858, Major J.B. Winstanley instigated the building of a new National (i.e. Church of England) School at the corner of Ratby Lane and Glenfield Lane.
was used as an Infant’s school, run by Mrs Mitchell. Mrs Ethel Howitt née Chesterton, who was born in 1898, wrote in her memoires that the original vicarage was a building on Glenfield Road. This later became a cattery, but is long gone, since the route of the road to Glenfield was changed many years ago. Mrs Howitt remembered Kirby’s Main Street being no more than a dirt track with fields on either side. She also mentions going to school at the Zion chapel at 3 years of age, then on to the National school and finally to the new school on Barwell Road. Ethel left school at the age of fourteen. In 1898, the school was repaired and improved, a contribution of £10 being made by the Railway company, since several of the railway servants’ children attended the school. A new headmaster, Harry Holmes, joined the school the same year. He then moved with the school to the new premises in 1910, when the fledgling Kirby Muxloe Primary School opened on Barwell Road. The old school was used as a Sunday School and also as a private house until 1922. It then became a Parsonage and home to the village curate. By 1930, the village had become a parish in its own right and the house was converted into the ‘Vicarage’. The architect was George Nott and the cost was £1700, a large amount of money! It is said that the builder, Albert Davey, who carried out the building work, perhaps trying to work too fast, injured his leg when a brick wall fell on top of him. During WW2, a very popular vicar was in residence, the Reverend Gerald SimmsReeve. The vicarage became one of the
Report Posts for Air Raid Protection Wardens in the village, with the vicar himself being one of them. He would often be seen riding around the village on his bicycle, complete with tin hat, whistle and gas mask. He took great pride in visiting his parishioners as often as possible, especially the elderly or infirm. He was known to have a prodigious appetite for tea and consumed pots of it every day! After 1947, the house once more became a private residence, as the vicarage moved to a more central part of the village, on Station Road. Three families lived in the house, in succession, over the next 20 years, until 1968, when the Osband family moved in. The family changed the name of the house from Oakengates (so called as it originally had gates made of oak) to Parson’s Farewell. The deeds of the house stipulated that the name could not have any direct reference to the past use of the house as a parsonage/ vicarage. From 1984 until 2002, the family ran the very successful Parson’s Gallery, a tea shop and gift shop, much enjoyed by villagers of the time. By 2012, the Osbands decided to move house and when the new occupants moved in, they renamed the property ’The Old School House’. Some of the information above has been taken from ‘Old Kirby Muxloe’ by Jonathan Wilshere. Thanks also to John Osband for additional information.
The architect was William Butterfield of London and the style was reminiscent of the ‘Swiss Style’ of building, popular in the 1800’s. This was a fairly unusual project for Butterfield, as he was known predominately for his Gothic Revival architecture. The first headmaster was Thomas Mitchell, who remained in that position for almost forty years. Over the years, Thomas, who also became church organist, was the subject of a certain amount of controversy. There were complaints that he accepted “personal gifts” from tradesmen with whom he dealt, that he was absent from school without permission and that he was, on occasions, what newspapers would later describe as "tired and emotional" when they wanted to avoid the libellous term “drunk”! Nevertheless, he managed to win his critics over sufficiently to be able to continue in his work. For several years after 1896, in order to accommodate the growing number of pupils, the Zion chapel, which is now the Scout Hut,

THE JOE HUMPHRIES MEMORIAL TRUST Three local sports clubs raise their game to create a heartsafe sporting environment THREE local sports clubs have joined the growing number of grassroots organisations working with local charity The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust to become ‘heartsafe’. Kegworth Town Cricket Club, Kibworth Cricket Club and Kirby Muxloe Sports Club have all invested in defibrillators and had CPR training with the support of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT). Financial assistance has come from JHMT and the Everards Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket League. Last year, the Everards Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket League’s premier division made it a league requirement for all premier league clubs to sign up to the Leicestershire and Rutland Heart Awareness in Cricket (HAC) partnership. As part of the requirements, all clubs must have a defibrillator at their grounds and provide CPR and defibrillator training for the membership of each club, including players, coaches and officials. The HAC programme has recently received a further boost, with two more premier league clubs – Kegworth and Kibworth – becoming heartsafe. Nigel Wain from Kirby Muxloe Sports Club said: “The JHMT has been very helpful throughout the project. They came in to do the original training, facilitated a very competitive discounted price for the defib and also funded the cabinet. Our sports club members, coaches and players are very supportive of our new defib. This is a must for multi-sports club like ours.
The JHMT also runs the Inspire Awards, a small grants scheme that supports young people to fulfill their ambitions in sports, art, community work or entrepreneurism. Steve Humphries, chair of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust, said: “We are delighted by the efforts of all those clubs who have been working alongside JHMT to help create a heartsafe sporting and community environment. This will also give added reassurance to parents of young people that these clubs are better prepared should the worst happen and someone falls victim to a cardiac arrest. “All of these clubs play in the Everard’s Leicestershire and Rutland cricket league, where almost every club in the premier league now has a defib. We hope this will inspire other clubs in the Everard’s League and those across the wider sporting family in the city and county to take the necessary steps to bring about this level of heartsafe excellence and practice. Andy Hibberd, Leicestershire County Cricket development officer for clubs and leagues, said: “I’d like to congratulate Kibworth, Kegworth and Kirby Muxloe for leading the way in the Heart Awareness in Cricket project. Whilst these clubs are great examples of what can be achieved, there is still lots of work to
do to ensure the Everard’s Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket League is a heartsafe league. Clubs which are interested in becoming heartsafe should not feel alone, there is a raft of support available including funding, procurement and training, so please do not hesitate to get in touch. A cardiac emergency can happen to anyone of any age, including seemingly fit and healthy young people taking part in physical activity. The physical exertion of sport can sometimes trigger underlying heart conditions like SADS. Access to a defibrillator within eight minutes – and someone who knows CPR – will drastically increase a victim’s chances of survival. To find out more about the work of the Trust, apply for training and support, or to help out with the charity’s work, visit the website at www.jhmt.org.uk You can also follow the Trust on Facebook at facebook.com/JHMTorguk and Twitter @JHMTorguk .
The JHMT was set up after the tragic death of Rothley teenager Joe Humphries, aged just 14, from sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS), while he was out on a training run. The charity campaigns tirelessly for greater awareness of SADS and sudden heart deaths, and helps grassroots sports clubs to get the equipment and training they need to help save a life. The principles of the charity include mandatory CPR training as part of the support of providing a defibrillator.

Patient Participation Group - Ratby Surgery We are a small group of Patients registered at Ratby surgery and we form the Patient Participation Group (PPG). These groups are not set up to be a ‘forum for moaners’ but nor are they ‘doctor fan clubs’. They are a route for patients to advise and inform the Practice on what matters most to patients and to help identify solutions to problems. The Patient Partnership Group l works in partnership with the Practice . What do Patient Partnership Groups do? • Improving communication by assisting in the production newsletters or leaflets that provide patients with information about their health and how to access services. •
Acting as a ‘critical friend’ to the Practice, by helping it appreciate and understand what patients are thinking and are saying about issues, such as, opening hours, telephone systems, requests for home visits, delays in being taken for appointment, repeat prescriptions and the range and type of services provided within the Practice.
•
Influencing the services that are provided, and where they are provided, by taking part in consultation to ensure that services can be developed in the way that is best for patients.
ew Goode •
Undertaking appropriate survey or research to find out what matters to patients and discussing the findings with the Practice. We also take a proactive part in promoting health campaigns.
We have meetings with the GPs regularly and at our last meeting we were very pleased to welcome Dr Asim to the practice. He has joined Dr Ogle and Dr Rema as a partner and his appointment will enable the practice to maintain its good access record as the patient list continues to grow. We feel very lucky that we have a young vibrant team of doctors who between them have a wide range of skills and knowledge.

Lace is making Bradgate Park Calendar Official a come back Launch Evening
Has anyone else noticed that lace is ladies in the a comeback and children’s fashion industry? The lace may be printed, embroidered, woven or machine lace. The lace may be in the form of a motif, an edging, part or the entire garment. There is a craft still in current usage that only a few people may be aware of that is bobbin lace. This craft is slowing becoming a popular craft again due to the popularity of the fashion industry.
making
The Bradgate Park Calendar had its official launch Stamford Arms, Groby, Leicester night at the on 8th August, and was received with much anticipation from all the members of The Bradgate Rotary Club and Peter Tyldesley (Director of Bradgate Park and Trust).
The calendar, now in its third year, has raised over £7000 for the Bradgate Park Trust, a charity which relies on voluntary support and donations as well as projects such as this one to help run and maintain Bradgate Park. Bradgate Rotary Club have organised this wonderful project to provide a beautiful product to sell within the Bradgate Park shop, and in their online store, which along with the sponsorship of local companies will provide much needed income for the Trust. The calendar was commissioned by Bradgate Rotary Club, who support and help many local charities and community events, and was designed by Summer Designs a newly set up freelance Graphic designer who is passionate for work within the local community. The Rotary Club wish to give special thanks to the Leicester Forest Photographic Society who provided the photos for the calendar, they welcome anyone interested in their work to visit their Annual Summer Exhibition, or to one of their open evenings, more information at www.lfps.org.uk. Also a big thank you to Groby Allotment Society who provided the calendar with recipes of the month, all inspired by the locally grown produce fresh from the allotments. Copies of the calendar can be purchased from the Bradgate Park Shop and their online store (www.bradgatepark.org/shop) shortly and would make excellent gifts. The money raised from the sale of the calendars will go to the Bradgate Park Trust.
There is an opportunity to learn the craft yourself. Classes are being held at Groby Village Hall LE6 0DJ on Wednesday mornings. We begin again on September 12th 10 am to 12 30 and run for 30 weeks. You are welcome to attend a taster session where you will be introduced to the craft. Basic equipment may be borrowed for the first few weeks; the Tutor has Beginners Kits for sale if required. You may already be a lacemaker and looking for further help or join to an established group for social contact. Groby Lace Class has been running for over 15 years and a wonderful way to explore a new craft. For further information contact Susan Marlow, 0116 2365789 or email susanmarlow47@btinternet.com

Exercise referral scheme expands to Enderby
Popular money course to run again
A partnership between Blaby District Council and Everyone Active will see the expansion of the successful Exercise Referral Scheme offering pool-based classes.
Popular money course to run again as people say they need tactics to cope with the age of austerity.
The 12-week scheme offers people who are currently inactive have a medical condition the opportunity to participate in exercise and benefit from physical activity under the guidance of qualified professional. After previously only being hosted at the Pavilion Leisure Centre, Everyone Active’s involvement will see the Referral Scheme and specialist classes made available at Enderby Leisure Centre. The beginner classes in Enderby will include an exercise circuit, gym workout and swimming. Toni, the specialist Aquatic in Health Instructor leading the ‘wet programme,’ said: “We’re delighted to be launching the Exercise Referral Scheme at Enderby Leisure Centre and hope it will help to encourage more people to lead healthier lifestyles. “Those who are referred onto the scheme will be given all the support and guidance they need from our expert teams to help them along their journey. Swimming activities are the ideal introduction to being more active and are lots of fun too!” Councillor Iain Hewson, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Regulatory Services, said: “We are extremely proud to offer the Exercise Referral Scheme for residents of the district who need it. The positive impact it makes on people’s lives is nothing short of incredible. “Our partnership with Everyone Active will ensure those who can benefit most from water-based exercise will get the chance to use the pool at Enderby Leisure Centre to start their journey.” Anyone who feels they are physically inactive and would like to be referred onto the scheme needs to be referred through their GP. For more information on Exercise Referral, call 0116 272 7523 or email exercise.referral@blaby.gov.uk.

Girl Guides to learn about money GIRL GUIDES are to learn how to look after money, after the introduction of a new ‘saver’ badge. Girlguiding UK has created the badge with the aim of improving financial literacy among teenagers. The girls, aged 10 to 14, must prove that they can manage cashefficiently, budget effectively and put aside money for the future, in order to win the badge. The badge has been created in cooperation with the insurer Legal & General, and was felt to be important as money management is a skill they will need all their adult lives.

HEALTHMATTERS COLDS AND FLU As the days are getting shorter and average temperatures have dropped, it marks that summer is coming to an end. It is around this time where the hay-fever season stops and we approach the cold and flu season. Everyone has experienced these conditions at some point in their lives. Colds and flus affect 15 million people each year in the UK. Often people make unnecessary trips to their GP when they should be resting at home. This creates a massive burden on the GP’s time when they could be dealing with more serious conditions. Colds and flu share some of the same symptoms (sneezing, coughing, sore throat), but are caused by different viruses. Flu can be much more serious than a cold. If you're generally fit and healthy, you can usually manage the symptoms of a cold or flu yourself without seeing a doctor. Look after yourself by resting, drinking non-alcoholic fluids to avoid dehydration and avoiding strenuous activity. Painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can relieve aches and pains. A cold is a mild viral infection of the nose, throat, sinuses and upper airways. There are around 200 viruses that cause colds. Symptoms of a cold include: • Runny nose, beginning with clear mucus that develops into thicker, green mucus as the cold progresses • Blocked nose
•
Sore throat
• Sneezing
•
Cough
• Cold symptoms come on gradually and affect just your nose and throat. The symptoms are fairly mild so you can still get around and are usually well enough to go to work. Whether you have a Cold or Flu, there is usually no need to see your GP as they can be treated symptomatically at the Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe. Because these infections are viral, prescribed antibiotics will not work. However, you should see your GP if your symptoms have lasted longer than 2 weeks, are 65 or over, are pregnant, have a long-term medical condition such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, kidney or neurological disease or have a weakened immune system. This could mean that flu can be more serious for you, and your doctor may want to prescribe antiviral medication. Antiviral medicine can lessen the symptoms of flu and shorten its duration, but treatment needs to begin soon after flu symptoms start for it to be effective. So it would be wise to see your GP straightaway. The best way to protect yourself from getting flu is by having the flu vaccine. The vaccine stimulates your body’s immune system to make antibodies to attack the flu virus. Antibodies are proteins that recognise and fight-off germs, such as viruses, that have invaded your blood. If you catch the flu virus after you've had the vaccination, your immune system will recognise it and immediately produce antibodies to fight it. It may take 10-14 days for your immunity to build up fully after you have had the flu shot. The antibodies that protect you from the flu will then gradually decrease over time. The flu strains can also change from year to year. Therefore, you need to have a flu jab every year to ensure that you have the best protection against the latest strain of the virus.
People with a cold may also suffer with a mild fever, earache, tiredness and headache. Symptoms develop over one or two days and can last for up to two weeks. Usually it's a self-limiting infection – this means it gets better by itself without the need for prescription treatment and no need to see your GP.
During October each year a flu vaccine is available free on the NHS. The NHS targets certain ‘at risk’ groups and vaccinates them for free. These groups are: • Anyone over the age of 65
Flu is a highly infectious and common viral illness. It's not the same as the common cold. Flu is caused by a different group of viruses and symptoms tend to be more severe and last for longer. You can catch flu – short for influenza – all year round, but it is especially common in winter, which is why it is also known as 'seasonal flu'. Flu causes a sudden high temperature, headache and general aches and pains, tiredness and sore throat. You can also lose your appetite, feel nauseous and have a cough. Flu symptoms can make you feel so exhausted and unwell that you have to stay in bed and rest until you feel better.
• Children and adults with an underlying health condition (particularly long-term heart or respiratory disease)
A third of the population think flu is just a bad cold, but each year thousands of people die of complications following flu. So it is worth knowing the difference between the two. The symptoms of flu and the common cold can be very similar. Here's how to tell the difference: • Flu symptoms come on quickly and include fever and aching muscles. They also make you feel too unwell to continue your usual activities
• Pregnant women
• Children and adults with weakened immune systems If you fall into one of the groups above it would be wise to book in for a flu jab, this is now available FREE from pharmacies as well as GP surgeries. So please book in for a flu jab. If you would like to make an appointment simply call us on 01162387353. So during the next few months if you develop any symptoms of Cold or Flu, make your first port of call the Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe, where our highly trained Pharmacists will help you to treat your condition, and if needed refer you to your GP appropriately. If you would like any information about anything mentioned above please call in to the Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe or call us on 01162387353 Your Local Pharmacist
