A very special mile for Joe FAMILIES and young children turned out in force for the inaugural Joe's Jog, a mile-long fun run in memory of 14-year-old Joe Humphries. The jog, which was held prior to the recent Rothley 10k (on June 17), helped to raise funds for local charities including the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT), which was set up to raise awareness of sudden heart deaths. Joe fell victim to SADS – sudden arrhythmic death syndrome – whilst out on a training run in his home village of Rothley in October 2012.

On Sunday 10th August 2014, the Village of Mountsorrel in Leicestershire will; Roll, Rock, Shoot, Paddle, Drink, Eat, Throw, Sing, Dance & Strut it's stuff!… It's REVIVAL time! The REVIVAL is Mountsorrel's version of the traditional village fete – all the old fashioned fun served with a modern twist. Leading the field is Soap-Box Racing; remember when you were a kid, making a kart out of old pram wheels and some planks? Well, when Boys (and Girls) grow up (a bit) it gets a lot more fun. Everything from baby landrovers and airplanes to a Bugatti Type-35... and of course the 'old school' plank and pram wheels. Trophies are on offer for; Fastest Time, Best Construction, and Spirit of the Event. River Trips and Boat Hire will get you out on the beautiful River Soar to explore one of the most picturesque stretches of river in the country. Have-a-Go Archery takes over the field by the river, along with an Archery Demonstration and a 'Speed-Shoot' Tournament, or why not try Mountsorrel's bid for the next Olympics - “Gnome Lobbing” (if it really needs explaining, think “Welly Wanging” with a difference), with the winner's taking home half of the takings, serious money is up for grabs! Hot-Rods & Custom Cars will take over the Honda Dealership's forecourt, whilst the Vintage Cars rest in peace around the Buttercross. We haven't told them, that's where the live band is playing! A plethora of stalls and displays will be scattered along the length of the village street, with the Village Green at one end and Stonehurst Family Farm at the other. Every available space in between will offer you the chance to try anything from Throwing a
Pot to having your Face Painted – along with Art Displays, Tribal Drumming and a chance to restore your Mind, Body & Soul in the 'Healthy Life' suite. The Memorial Hall hosts the Teas with Ballroom & Swing Jive Music for dancing, along with Vintage Stalls and a chance to get your hair & make up done - 40's style! Watch the Burlesque show... or better still, join the workshop and learn to strut your stuff! Fancy a drink? Maybe a Real Ale? Or something to eat?... would we let you down! Mountsorrel's hostelries will be open for your every need. You can even be served afternoon tea on vintage china, by the river listening to Frank Sinatra. For the energetic amongst you - we have Canoes, Bell-boat Races, Bouncy Castles, and a Climbing Wall, or if you're feeling flexible why not enter the Hawaiian Limbo Competition and win some money! Whether you want to watch the American civil war re-enactors firing the cannon, marvel at the Motor Museum at the Farm, or sit in the 1950's Ice Cream Parlour Mountsorrel REVIVAL has something for everyone! Festival Parking is available, so you can arrive by foot, bus, car or boat (If you are coming by helicopter, ring us first!) What else can we tell you! - Oh yes – it's FREE! Check out all the details and photos on the website: www.mountsorrel-revival.co.uk or link with us on facebook
Wildflower grants available for green spaces Community groups and landowners are being invited to take advantage of a summer grants scheme to encourage people to create wildflower meadows. Each applicant can apply for up to £250 worth of seeds, bulbs and plugs to use in parks, open spaces and countryside areas under the Plugs for Bugs scheme. Andy Jackson, Project Manager at the county council based Stepping Stones project which is offering the funding, said: “Wildflowers can really brighten up your local community and improve the quality of green spaces for people and wildlife. “Wildflowers and long grasses are important as they provide much needed habitats for insects and butterflies. “Community groups and farmers as well as parish and town councils in the Stepping Stones project area can apply to the scheme. Unfortunately the grants are not available to be used for people’s gardens but we hope that people will be inspired to replicate the wildflower meadows and beds they see at home.” For more information and an application pack call: 0116 305 7221 or 7264. For more on the Stepping Stones project and the area it covers visit: www.leics.gov.uk/stepping_stones

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Rothley & Mountsorrel areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get
from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Commemorating Our Past In 1914, one hundred years ago, the population of Birstall and Wanlip was only around 700.. The “Great War” of 1914 – 1918 was regarded, by our grandparents and great- grandparents as a war to end all wars, and many local men joined the forces. Sadly, we know now that their hopes were not fulfilled, since we had a second world war only 25 years later. The slaughter in both wars was horrendous but almost all families in the UK had relatives who died or were injured in battle during the first world war. 21 of those local men did not return – their names are recorded on war memorials at the two villages. If your family lived in this area and you have the surname Adnitt, Bayliss, Davenport, Dawson, Endall, Fielding Johnson, Gladding, Greasley, Henson, Liquorish, Pritchett, Reed, Reynolds, Smith, Toon, Walton, Gascoigne, Goodey or Oxbury you may be a descendant of these soldiers. If you are one of those people, or if you also had relatives who were killed in the first world war, you are invited to a very special service on the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of war: Monday 4th August at 7.30pm at St. James, Church, Birstall. It will be a quiet service of reflection, remembering the sacrifice those men made to serve their country, and the tragedy and heartbreak of all families affected by the war. The Royal British Legion is co-ordinating the event with the Rector of St. James, Revd Vince Jupp, so if you have any information, photos or memorabilia to offer for an exhibition in the church, please contact 0751 516881 or e-mail www1centenary@outlook.com
Birstall St. James Church Garden Fete Monday 25th August - 2pm – 4pm on the Church Lawn, Church Hill (if wet, in the church) The annual Church garden fete will be raising funds this year for the church and for the local charity “City of Sanctuary”, which is based at Leicester Cathedral and supports refugees and destitute asylum seekers. As always, the organisers will be hoping for good weather, but the event has never yet been cancelled by rain, as the stall-holders move inside the church! There will be all the fun of the traditional garden party with games, raffle, tombola, stalls for cakes, plants, toys, bric-a-brac, cards etc. plus teas and light refreshments. It is not too late to volunteer to run a stall or game or to assist others, so if you would like to come along as a helper please ring Debbie on 0116 2673262 or Beryl on 0116 2674913. We look forward to seeing you all on Bank holiday Monday.

Swithland Show... The hugely popular Swithland Flower and Vegetable Show will be held on Saturday 6th September at The Griffin Inn and the village school in Swithland. Last years show was another rousing success and raised a whopping £5,700.00 for Rainbows, LOROS and other local charities. The standard of entries was extremely high with strong contenders shown in the ever popular vegetables arena. Of equal standard were exhibits in the baking and crafts categories with many prizes won on the day. The ever popular afternoon auction was very well supported with lots of deep pocket digging by all the generous bidders. Why not take part this year? Start planning your entries now in the vegetables, fruit, flowers, baking and craft categories. It’s great fun for all the family and raises valued funds for deserving local charities. ALL the money raised by the show goes directly to Rainbows, LOROS and other local charities. For information on how to enter and take part please email Duncan Keates at duncan.keates@ sky.com or Sally Garner sally.garner667@gmail.com

Almost there for Heritage Centre’s £56,000 funding appeal The public has taken to heart the proposal to build a heritage centre for the villages of Mountsorrel and Rothley. The Mountsorrel and Rothley Community Heritage Centre will be situated next to the recently restored Mountsorrel Railway, which itself functions as a heritage corridor between the Loughborough-based Great Central Railway and Stonehurst Family Farm and Motor Museum. In February, Lafarge-Tarmac’s Landfill Communities Fund awarded a £540,000 grant to fund the project, but the terms of the grant required that a further £56,000 be raised as matched funding.
plaque that will feature in the tearoom at the Centre. With only just over £6,000 still to go, the project is launching a final push to bring in the relatively small remaining balance. If you want to learn about the benefits the new centre will bring then go to: www.heritage-centre.co.uk
Mountsorrel, Leicestershire LE12 7EW (and write "Heritage Centre" on the back of the cheque). Below photo: plan of the proposed heritage centre George Overton (volunteer) 07999 589044
And if you want to make a donation to the appeal, please send a cheque to the David Clarke Railway Trust, c/o 112 Balmoral Road,
Donations have come in from not only local people, but from all over the country and abroad. After only four months £50,000 has been raised leaving only £6,000 still to be raised to release the grant. However, time is running out as the terms of grant mean that the heritage centre has to be complete by July 16th 2015, which in turn means that the remaining match funding must, realistically, be raised by the end of July this year as work cannot start until the match funding is in place! Project leader Steve Cramp commented “The response from the public has been superb. We are now within sight of the target we need to achieve in order to get work started. But it's essential that we succeed sooner rather than later. We have two old granite buildings to dismantle and reconstruct, stone by stone, as part of the heritage centre, within a year. This will be a tough ask but we are confident of success if we can start early enough.” To help raise this figure a “sponsor a brick" appeal was launched where the public can sponsor the bricks that will be used to combine, into one unified building, the different structures that will form the core of the Heritage Centre. The names of sponsors will appear on a large commemorative
Chased by Cows? If you are out in the countryside this summer and end up in an unknown field, here is what to do: STOP, LOOK and LISTEN. Keep to paths and be prepared for cattle to react (aggressively?) if you have a dog with you. Move quickly, quietly and calmly. DON’T hang on to your dog if you are threatened – dogs can run much faster and reach safely quicker if you let them go. DON’T panic or run. If cattle follow you, just walk on quietly. NFU Mutual, the insurer who has given out the guidelines, says that about 500 people have been attacked and injured by cows in the past eight years. “Be aware of your surroundings,” urges NFU Mutual. “This is a working environment.”

David Walliams calls on people to support Rainbows Hospice in its World Record attempt Comedian and author David Walliams wants people to help create the world’s biggest rainbow for the East Midlands’ only children’s hospice by adding a splash of colour. Mr Walliams, who is a patron of Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, wants people to celebrate the charity’s 20th birthday milestone by helping to smash a world record. To get involved, people can share a bright photo selfie online or write a birthday message on a special coloured postcard. The selfies and postcards will then be laid together to create the giant rainbow, which will be displayed later in the year at a venue in the East Midlands. The charity hopes to break the record for the world’s biggest postcard mosaic, which currently measures 453.37 m² and was created by students from The Camford International School in India.
a patron. So come on, get involved and help them create the biggest rainbow ever made up of selfies and postcards; it’s a fabulous way to celebrate 20 years of caring for children and young people. Let’s do something amazing for Rainbows.” People will be able to add their bit to the World’s Biggest Rainbow as it tours the East Midlands as part of a special roadshow and people will be able to take photos and write messages on birthday cards at those locations. Geoff Ellis, Rainbows chief executive, added: “This year we are celebrating 20 years of care
and we want to make as much noise as possible about it. We hope that by creating the world’s biggest rainbow, we will raise a lot of awareness about who we are and the work we do. We haven’t decided where we will reveal the rainbow yet as we just don’t know how big it is going to get. To join in, share a bright photo of yourself using backgrounds or accessories matching one of our special rainbow colours – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple or pink. Then, using the hashtag #RainbowsSelfie, post it onto Twitter or Facebook and nominate your friends. Or visit www.rainbows.co.uk/ birthdayrainbow to order coloured postcards.
Kicking off the World’s Biggest Rainbow campaign today, David Walliams said: “I’m very excited to be launching this fantastic appeal for Rainbows. The hospice is such an incredible place and the staff do a fantastic job making a happy environment filled with love and laughter. I am very passionate about the work the charity does and I’m proud to be

THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY
Our Members Meeting on 14th July, was our Annual Strawberry Cream Tea which was a resounding success with 30 members, family and friends attending. This year it was held at the “Blue Bell Inn” in Rothley. Recently refurbished, the Inn was attractively appointed and the Tea room was comfortably arranged for our benefit. On arrival we were supplied with either Tea or Coffee which was most welcome as the weather was beautifully hot – a real July Summer’s day. We were then more than generously plied with large scones, strawberry jam, copious amounts of Clotted Cream (so thick you could stand your spoon up in it!) and then came the strawberries, large and delicious. We then held a well supplied Raffle to the delight of all concerned. We owe a great debt of gratitude to our Deputy Leader, Sue Wakerley, for organising the occasion and also our thanks go the more than helpful and diligent staff of the “Blue Bell Inn” Restaurant..

Family event to remember Charnwood’s WWI heroes A MAJOR family event is being held in Loughborough to mark the centenary of World War I and to remember the 478 local heroes who died for their country. Charnwood Borough Council has organised the “We Remember” event in Queen’s Park between 3pm-6pm on August 9, 2014, to commemorate the start of the Great War which raged from 19141918. The park will be packed full of interactive exhibitions, actors in uniform telling real-life stories of fallen soldiers, family activities, a vintage tea party, live music and performances. Mel Gould, who manages the Loughborough Carillon Tower and War Memorial Museum, said: "By the end of the First World War nearly every family in the land had been, is some way, affected.
Fathers, sons, brothers and uncles, killed or damaged both physically and mentally. "They made that sacrifice in the belief that they were opposing tyranny and however some historians view the events of WWI we, their successors, have a sacred duty to honour their memory." Councillor Stephen Hampson, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said: “Nearly 500 local heroes were killed in the conflict and it is important that we never forget their sacrifice. “Our We Remember event is just the start of our commemorations in Charnwood over the next four years and we hope people will find it educational, interesting and interactive.” Details for the event are still being finalised which the Council will release soon.

FILMREVIEW
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes A decade after a devastating virus ravaged the Earth, wiping out millions, the human survivors step forward to challenge Caesar and his almighty ape army. With both sides hungry for superiority, the scene is set for an epic battle of man versus ape.
Milestone points the way towards the start of construction work The Great Central Railway is celebrating after planning permission was awarded by Charnwood Borough Council for a brand new bridge over the Midland mainline. The new structure is key to the aims to reunify two sections of the GCR and create an 18 mile heritage railway across the East Midlands. Volunteer experts from Network Rail are coordinating the build programme with the GCR committed to paying for the work.
Blaming the apes for causing the virus which killed his two sons, human leader Dreyfus is determined to seek vengeance for his loss. Filmed using cutting edge, motion-capture technology, combining real footage with CGI, the picture boasts strikingly detailed graphics that bring Caesar and his army to life in a way that has never been seen before.
Transformers: Age Of Extinction Based on Steve Moore’s graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars, Dwayne Johnson, better known as wrestler ‘The Rock’, stars as the Greek demigod in this hotly anticipated action adventure movie.
Bill Ford, Managing Director of the Great Central Railway said, “This is a real milestone in the progress of this decades old dream as it moves towards reality. We really have to thank the entire Network Rail team for their hard work. Without them we wouldn’t be making such incredible progress.” The conditional planning permission requires some small additional work before construction on the bridge can start. Two donated bridge decks (already partly refurbished) will be placed end to end, to create a single 36 metre long structure. It will be built over the Midland mainline, close to where the A60 road crosses the railway in Loughborough. In years to come, historic steam engines will cross the bridge hauling Great Central trains, while modern units on an electrified railway will hurtle underneath! Construction work itself is unlikely to start before Christmas to coincide with planned engineering shut downs on the national rail network. The Great Central Railway has set a target of raising one million pounds to pay for the work. Already just over £500,000 has been contributed by railway enthusiasts and well-wishers from across the whole UK - and abroad.
The film begins after Hercules’ successful performance of the legendary twelve labours. Having travelled to Greece to trade his sought after services in exchange for gold, Hercules must revert back to his old heroic ways when he unexpectedly called upon by the ruler of Thrace and his daughter to assist them in overcoming an unrelenting warlord. ANING SERVICE
DON’T REPLACE RESTORE
Planning Permission Granted for Great Central Railway Bridge Project
Bill continued, “The bridge will ultimately enable us to link with the Great Central Railway Nottingham who run trains from Ruddington to the north of Loughborough. We’ll be able to create an 18 mile heritage line. While there are other structures to complete besides the bridge, the vision has clearly captured the imagination and we are very grateful to the thousands of people who have contributed to the appeal. Fundraising is vital for success and we’d urge people who want to see this happen to contribute.” You can donate to the appeal by sending a cheque made payable to the David Clarke Railway Trust to Bridge Appeal, Great Central Railway, Lovatt House, 3 Wharncliffe Road, Loughborough, Leics, LE11 1SL. Alternatively donations can be made online using a credit or debit card at www.gcrailway.co.uk/unify

Summer Concerts at De Montfort Hall a huge success “Enchanting, captivating and thoroughly enjoyable” Over 3,000 children and young people and 90 schools from across the city and the county wowed crowds at Leicester-Shire Schools Music Service’s (LSMS) Summer Festivals at De Montfort Hall. Across three days and nights, young musicians and singers took to the stage to perform a dazzling variety of well-known and original songs and musical numbers in a diverse range of styles using an amazing variety of instruments. Brass ensembles, choirs, ukulele ensembles, steel pans groups, string ensembles, and even a Taiko Japanese drumming group, demonstrated their skills and talents, entertaining a packed hall of parents, grandparents, family members, friends, and teachers, and generated some brilliant feedback: • “Such talent from such young children” • “Amazing and spectacular” • “Great evening” • “Fab, epic, awesome” • “Superb and very well organised” • “Crystal clear and powerful” • “Best one yet!” • “Diverse, enjoyable, what a fantastic showcase of talent” • “Absolutely brilliant” • “A wonderfully entertaining evening” • “Inspirational, enjoyable, entertaining” • “Outstanding!! Amazing opportunity for children of all abilities.” In the same week that the current kings of the Leicester music scene, Kasabian, played a triumphant home-coming gig at Victoria Park, right next door at De Montfort Hall, Leicester’s future musical talent were strutting their stuff thanks to changes made in music education policy to ensure every child has an opportunity to take up an instrument or sing. Working in partnership with schools and music hub partners, LSMS have extended its Summer Festival programme to now include three matinee performances and three evening performances, involving children and young people of all ages to perform to packed crowds at this famous Leicester venue.

The Rotary Club of the Wreake Valley organised the fifth annual Watermead Challenge Charity Run at Watermead Park in early July. Although the date clashed with one of the football World Cup semi finals there were a record 275 plus entrants in the three and five mile runs. The event, this year in aid of the local Syston charity, Textellis.com, set up by Richard Page in aid of his son Ellis, attracted runners of all abilities around what is an attractive lakeside course. Race Director, Chris Battye, said: "We are delighted with the turnout and the overall success of the event. Money is still coming in but we hope the evening will have raised over £2000 for this worthwhile cause."
