It has been an exciting year for Rothley Primary school as the new school building has finally started. The foundations have been laid and as you can see from the pictures the school structure is beginning to appear. Every week there is progress on the building and it is really great seeing all the changes.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Rothley & Mountsorrel areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get

from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Birstall Gala

A Beautiful Local Garden is Opening to the Public A beautiful local garden is opening to the public again in July under the National Gardens Scheme to raise money for several worthwhile NGS charities. Last summer, during two Sundays, Mike & Liz Newcombed welcomed 500 visitors to their Newtown Linford garden and were able to raise £2500 for the NGS charities. The interest in and the enjoyment of this garden has resulted in several local groups, including gardening clubs, arranging private visits to the garden this summer. The Newtown Linford Gardening Club will also, once again, use this venue for their Summer Party on Tuesday 22nd July.

Saturday 28th June & Sunday 29th June 2014 This year’s Gala will be held over the weekend of 28th & 29th June, and once again, by popular demand, we will be accepting bookings for stalls for both the Saturday and Sunday, in fact bookings are already being taken.

The 2-acre SW facing garden has stunning views across Charnwood countryside. Near the house are patios, water features, flower and shrub beds, fruit trees, greenhouses and vegetable plots. Lawns then slope down to a gravel garden, a large wildlife pond with waterfall and three small areas of woodland, with pleasant walks through many species of trees. The lower two thirds of this garden has been created since 2004, with over 160 conifers and deciduous trees planted. There are several places to sit and relax around the garden.

In previous years we have had over 70 private and charity stalls, and so if you or your organisation would like to have a stall, stand or some space to promote your business, or charity please contact the Parish Council offices for the appropriate forms and any further information you may require by telephoning: 0116 267 6191 or you can contact us by email: admin@birstllpc.org.uk.

Light refreshments will be available. There will also be plant sales, a book stall and a craft stall, selling jewellery, scarves etc. Admission for adults is £3.50, children are free and dogs on leads are welcome with well-behaved owners. PLEASE COME AND JOIN US.

Or you can download the forms from our website: http://birstall.leicester shireparishcouncils.org/

The full address is – ‘Mountain Ash’, 140 Ulverscroft Lane, Newtown Linford, LE6 0AJ.

Not sure whether you want a stall or not? Take a look at last year’s Gala photographs to help you make your decision, a brilliant weekend was enjoyed by all and the feedback was superb from members of the public and stall holders for both days.

On both Sunday 6th and Sunday 13th July the garden, which is situated halfway along Ulverscroft Lane between Newtown Linford and Ulverscroft, will be open to the public from 11.00am – 5.00pm.

For further details and some photographs of the garden see the NGS website – www.ngs.org.uk – put either Mountain Ash or LE6 0AJ into the garden finder. Amongst the many charities supported by the NGS are Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices, Carers Trust and, this year, Parkinsons UK.

Swithland Show... The hugely popular Swithland Flower and Vegetable Show will be held on Saturday 6th September at The Griffin Inn and the village school in Swithland. Last years show was another rousing success and raised a whopping £5,700.00 for Rainbows, LOROS and other local charities. The standard of entries was extremely high with strong contenders shown in the ever popular vegetables arena. Of equal standard were exhibits in the baking and crafts categories with many prizes won on the day. The ever popular afternoon auction was very well supported with lots of deep pocket digging by all the generous bidders. Why not take part this year? Start planning your entries now in the vegetables, fruit, flowers, baking and craft categories. It’s great fun for all the family and raises valued funds for deserving local charities. ALL the money raised by the show goes directly to Rainbows, LOROS and other local charities. For information on how to enter and take part please email Duncan Keates at duncan.keates@ sky.com or Sally Garner at sally.garner667@gmail.com

Upward trend in adoption continues The number of adoptions in Leicestershire is continuing to reflect an upward trend. Last year, the County Council found new homes for 58 youngsters last year - this was an increase of 38 per cent compared to the previous 12 months. There was also a 40 per cent increase in the number of adopters, but the council wants to recruit more adopters as well finding an extra 100 foster carers following a six per cent rise in the number of children in care over the past 12 months. Ivan Ould, Cabinet member for children and families said: "The figures are really encouraging and the biggest shift seems to be people’s ability to accept that adoption is for them. Much of that is down to the work which has been done to bust myths about who can adopt. “There’s also been a keen national focus on adoption, and our awareness events in the county have also helped achieve these good results. “We want to recruit more people and we are very keen to hear from anyone who feels they can make the commitment to support the children.” The next open evening for potential adopters is being held on Monday, June 30 at County Hall in Glenfield from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Anyone can be considered as an adopter - whether you are on your own or in a relationship, working or not working, regardless of your race, religion or sexual orientation. THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY

“June is bursting out all over” as the song goes, at long last except for the odd showers of rain short and sharp, it felt more like Summer has arrived. It certainly felt that way within the Membership which was buzzing with news of recently taken holidays and those to come, not to mention the eagerly awaited next month’s Strawberry Cream Tea at the “Blue Bell Inn”, in Rothley Continuing on after the club’s “Business” we experienced a very special moment – a presentation to Mrs. Diana Whatton in gratitude for eleven years of faithful service running the

“Bring and Buy” table and supplying for every conceivable occasion, quantities of beautifully made cakes and especially, cream meringues!! I think the inserted photograph says it all, taken by fellow member Mrs. Gill Jefferson, our resident photographer. Our entertainment then followed, provided by four Members of the Leicestershire Speakers club. Three ladies and one brave gentleman, told a total of eight stories on which the membership had to decide whether they were “true or false”. We all had cards on which, after each story, we had to mark our conclusion, which took a great deal of concentration. The end result was given by each speaker and prizes were presented not only to the highest points, but down throughout. Very worthwhile prizes were gratefully received. After all this pleasurable hard work, the membership then tucked into a multitude of cakes to consume with refreshing cups of tea. Any enquires concerning information regarding the activities of this club, please contact me on 0116 2363467

Ann Farndon.

Your dog could die this summer When it comes to leaving your dog in the car in the summer months, DON’T. Just 20 minutes in a hot car can kill a dog, even if you leave a window down. The Dogs Trust warns it is an agonising death, as the dog is slowly roasting alive. (Dogs can only sweat through panting.) The Trust warns: “People think that opening a window or leaving their car in the shade is fine, but we know that it is absolutely NOT the case. If you are going somewhere where you know you cannot take your dog, then leave it at home, because a dog can die in as little as 20 minutes.” Sadly, while a survey found that 28% of people are willing to risk their dog being left in a car, only 10% would ever dream of leaving their mobile phone in a car.

Chased by Cows? If you are out in the countryside this summer and end up in an unknown field, here is what to do: STOP, LOOK and LISTEN. Keep to paths and be prepared for cattle to react (aggressively?) if you have a dog with you. Move quickly, quietly and calmly. DON’T hang on to your dog if you are threatened – dogs can run much faster and reach safely quicker if you let them go. DON’T panic or run. If cattle follow you, just walk on quietly. NFU Mutual, the insurer who has given out the guidelines, says that about 500 people have been attacked and injured by cows in the past eight years. “Be aware of your surroundings,” urges NFU Mutual. “This is a working environment.”

“I don’t see the point in measuring life in time any more. I’d rather measure life in terms of making a difference” - Stephen Sutton

WILL YOU BE ‘A BIT MORE STEPHEN’?

M

Being treated alongside others their own age can make a huge difference.

any of us have heard of Stephen Sutton, the teenager with terminal cancer who shot to fame with his bucket list. The country seemed to pull together to help him achieve his dreams; from breaking a world record, to hugging an elephant and having a tattoo! But his most famous item on the list was to raise funds for The Teenage Cancer Trust, he has now raised over £3.7 million pounds, the largest single amount raised on any Just Giving Page! He managed this by having fun, organising events for others to enjoy and not giving up or withdrawing from society.

• Teenage Cancer Trust empowers young people to take control of their health and speak up when something changes. Their pioneering Education team deliver positive and interactive free cancer awareness sessions in schools, colleges and universities on the signs of cancer, cancer treatments and prevention as well as healthy living.

I’ve decided to take a closer look at the Teenage Cancer Trust in Leicestershire and wonder if we could each be ‘a bit more Stephen’ and push ourselves to raise funds for charity?

• Between them these units support 125 young adults with cancer. The running cost of the Leicester unit alone is over £120,000 per year.

• Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for the seven young people aged between 13 and 24 diagnosed with cancer every day. • They build specialist units within NHS hospitals bringing young people together to be treated by teenage cancer experts in a place designed just for them. They want every young person with cancer cess to this to have access specialist support, no here they live. matter where onally • Traditionally ongside treated alongside children or elderly patients at the end of s, young their lives, an feel people can extremelyy isolated atment, at during treatment, er some never meeting another young person with cancer.

• Our Teenage Cancer Trust unit is    with the next nearest being Nottingham City Hospital.

• They rely on donations to do their vital work and are always looking for support from the local community to organise fundraising events. Stephen sadly passed away on the 14th May but was fundraising up to the week of his death. I hope he has inspired many people to think about what they could achieve for the many charities that need our support. If The Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity that you would like to support please contact heather. bowen@teenagecancertrust.org alternatively there are many other charities featured in this month’s magazine so please see if you can   I know I’m going to try and be ‘a bit more Stephen’ are you?

Kevin Costner stars as Ethan Renner, a high profile field agent who has given his life’s work to the CIA. After he is diagnosed with a terminal illness, Renner finds that his priorities have changed and decides to retire from his dangerous lifestyle, to enjoy spending time with his estranged family. The CIA has other plans, offering him an in-demand experimental drug which could save his life, if he accepts one final, extremely dangerous mission. In order to acquire the life-saving drug, Renner must seek out a deadly terrorist whilst also taking sole responsibility for his young daughter.

The Fault in Our Stars Based on the bestselling novel by John Green, The Fault in Our stars tells the heart-warming love story of two teenagers who meet at a cancer support group. Hazel and Gus share a similar sense of humour and a mutual boredom for everything ordinary, conventional and predictable and this is the story of their unforgettable journey together.

Today, a man knocked my front door. He said he was collecting for the local swimming pool... So I gave him two buckets of water.

ROLLS-ROYCE RETIRED EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION

Teenage Cancer Trust 10 mile walk

The members of the Rolls-Royce Retired Employees Association spent an enjoyable day at the Malvern Spring Show and despite the heavy showers on the way there, they had a rain free afternoon with warm sunshine. Most of the members arrived home with plants and garden accessories The Walk & Talk's May walk was held on May 6th and everyone met at Ticknall Village Hall Car Park, 32 walkers took part in the walk that ventured into the Calke Abbey Estate and then into the old Tramway Tunnel. and then down to Staunton Harold Reservoir then back into Calke passing through the woods with the Bluebells in glorious colour. After the walk the majority of the walkers went to "The Crewe & Harpur at Swarkestone for lunch. The “This That and the Other” Group have spent two sessions making bracelets and necklaces from paper and all have been amazed at the results of their work. These will go towards the Shoebox Appeal which the group are supporting.

President Peter Jones together with members of the Rotary Club of the Soar Valley completed a 10 mile walk to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust which is the President's chosen charity. The walk started and finished at the Waterside Inn, Mountsorrel and was organized by Rtn. Graham Cooper. When all the sponsorship money is received it is anticipated to raise over £900 for this worthy cause.

Once again there will be an Open Gardens event in the villages of Thurcaston and Cropston this summer. This will take place on the weekend of 28th and 29th June. All money raised from the Open Gardens event will go to charity. This year we are raising money for LOROS. We hope to have a number of different gardens for you to visit across the two villages; some large, some small, some immaculate, some very much less so! But all for you to enjoy. The wet weather at the start of this year meant that many gardens were slow to get going, but now that Spring is really here they are bursting into life. Gardens will be open from 2pm – 6pm on both days; tickets will be £4 each (accompanied children and wheelchair users free) and will be valid for both days. They can be purchased on the day from any of the Open Gardens and in advance. Look out for further details nearer the Open Garden weekend. For more information about this event please have a look at our web site www.tcog.org.uk or contact Linda on 0116 2363872 or email Linda@tcog.org.uk Why not put the date in your diary now, then come along with your family and friends, and support this great community event, and help us raise money for a very worthwhile cause. We look forward to seeing you!

of services at the heart of local communities.

Councillor Pam Posnett, chair of the Leicestershire Rural Partnership, said: “Rural services such as shops and post offices are crucial to communities and we want to help these local businesses to thrive. Improvements such as new chillers and display units can improve the range of stock, as well as the appearance and layout of the store.” For further details, see http://www.kerchingretail.com/vss
