Count of rough sleepers carried out An annual count to establish the number of rough sleepers in Charnwood has been carried out by the borough council, with the support of local partner agencies. Four teams checked over 50 locations across the borough in the early hours of Wednesday, November 21. Three people were found during the operation. Two people accepted the offers of accommodation for the night and one person declined the offer of support. The count is to establish a picture of the number of rough sleepers within the borough on a typical night and followed guidelines set by Homeless Link, a charity which works with organisations involved in supporting homeless people. A verifier from the charity attended the count. The Council is required by government to provide either an estimate of the number of rough sleepers in the borough or carry out an actual count. The findings from the count contribute towards building a national picture of rough sleeping in the UK. Cllr Paul Mercer, the Council’s lead member for housing, said: “We are fully aware that throughout the year there are people sleeping rough in the borough as this is an issue facing all towns and cities. “The housing options team are focussed on supporting people in need of help on a day to day basis and trying to engage with those that decline help”.

“During the evening we discovered three people sleeping rough. We offered accommodation and two of the people took up the offer and one person declined. We offer advice and assistance but cannot force people to engage with services or take up the offer of accommodation. “The issues around the causes of rough sleeping are complex but our services are set up to help people facing problems who require advice and assistance in finding somewhere to live.” The support available to rough sleepers in Charnwood includes: Falcon Support Services has a drop-in service which provides food, clothing, washing facilities, advice and support to rough sleepers. https://www.falconsupportservices.org.uk/ the-drop-in The Bridge’s homelessness transitions team provides intensive one-to-one support to anyone aged 18 or over who is sleeping rough. thebridge-eastmidlands.org.uk/ homelessness-transitions-service The No Second Night Out scheme which provides somewhere for rough sleepers to stay while the homelessness transitions team help them to secure longer-term accommodation. There are three No Second Night Out beds across the region including two at the Falcon Centre in Loughborough The council’s housing options team can provide advice and assistance to people who are homeless and rough sleeping. If you are worried about someone who may be sleeping rough in Charnwood please call the housing options team on 01509 634567 or email housing@charnwood.gov.uk. Merry Christmas

and a happy new year Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon | | death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

JHMT helps local Scouts to become heartsafe A LOCAL heart charity is teaming up with the local Scouts to help make sure Scouting events and activities are ‘heartsafe’. Rothley-based charity the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT), which raises awareness of sudden heart deaths like SADS (sudden arrhythmic death syndrome), has been helping Charnwood Scouts to become heartsafe by offering specialist life-saving training in CPR and defibrillator familiarisation.

of the D of E award have to take many things into consideration including the physical abilities and health needs of the young people. This year during preparations it was identified that we should have a defibrillator in the event of an emergency. “Whilst trying to find a supplier for our own defibrillator, we came across the JHMT. After making contact with them we purchased two defibrillators. “Also with the support of the JHMT, Charnwood Scouts are becoming heartsafe. As well as the CPR training our leaders take part in, the JHMT has helped us with training in how to use a defib, and we are now working with the JHMT to develop a badge reflecting this, which our scouts will be able to achieve.”

With the support of the JHMT, CPR and defibrillator training will be made available to more than 200 adults, who will pass on the skills they learn to more than 1,000 young people in Scouting in Charnwood. And the Charnwood Scouts have recently bought two new defibrillators – one which has been installed at the local campsite Oaks in Charnwood, and one mobile defib which will be used for expeditions and events.

Dr Mike Ferguson from the JHMT said: “It’s great news that the Charnwood Scouts are becoming heartsafe, and that they are developing a badge for those Scouts who will have had CPR training and defibrillator familiarisation.

“We want to make sure as many young people as possible have these life-saving skills, so that it becomes the norm to have them. We’re delighted to offer the training that will help them to achieve this.” Steve Humphries from the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust said: “We are proud to be working in collaboration with Charnwood Scouts to help create a heartsafe environment. “Hundreds of young people and volunteers take part in a diverse range of learning and recreational activities as part of Scouting. It’s vitally important that this fantastic worldwide movement is equipped to deal with a cardiac emergency. “As we know, sudden cardiac arrest – including undiagnosed heart conditions like SADS – can strike fit and healthy young people without any warning. Having more people including young cubs, scouts, guides and leaders with CPR and defib skills can be the difference between life and death. Teamwork saves lives.’ As a result of the fantastic work between the JHMT and Charnwood Scouts, the rest of Leicestershire Scouts are getting defibs installed across their remaining five campsites and are looking at how to introduce these essential skills for life to more of their adults and young people. To find out more about the work of the JHMT and how you could get free CPR training for your club or community group, visit jhmt.org.uk

Through their association with the JHMT, the Scouts were able to buy the defibs at a competitive rate. An external cabinet for the campsite defib was donated by the JHMT. Paul Smith from Charnwood Scouts said: “As part of Scouting, we offer opportunities to young people in Charnwood, which provide them with skills for life, including the Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) award. “Leaders who supervise the expedition part

A Night to Remember Dementia UK has been selected as one of three charities being supported by Leicester Tigers during the 2018/19 season. This recognises the efforts and achievements of a local campaign, aimed at securing a specialist dementia Admiral Nurse for the community in Leicestershire. To celebrate this, a charity dinner will be held in the Premiership Suite at Leicester Tigers on Friday 8th March 2019. The ‘Night to Remember’ event will include a four-course dinner, magic, music and dancing. All proceeds will go to Dementia UK Leicestershire, to fund an Admiral Nurse. To date the Leicestershire Fundraising Group has raised in excess of ÂŁ60,000, and is now in talks with host partners to recruit Leicestershire’s first community Admiral Nurse, who will provide specialist dementia support to families across the county. The members of the Leicestershire Fundraising Group all have first-hand experience of caring for a family member with dementia. When they heard about Admiral Nurses and realised there weren’t any in Leicestershire, they established the group with the aim of raising enough money to fund a nurse. Gwyn Jones, chairperson of the group, says “We are delighted to have exceeded our initial target of ÂŁ50,000, and to learn that Dementia UK is starting the recruitment process for Leicestershire’s first community-based Admiral Nurse. But we can’t stop there! Enough money has been raised for one nurse for one year, but that is not enough to help the hundreds of families in the county facing the challenges of dementia. We must keep fundraising to fund more nurses to meet the growing need.â€? Anna Casswell, a member of the fundraising group, says “Everyone is invited to this fun event, so get some friends, relatives or colleagues together; dust off your glad rags, and come along to help raise vital funds - while enjoying a Night to Rememberâ€?. Dementia UK is a national charity with the sole purpose of recruiting, training and supporting dementia specialist Admiral Nurses. They work with families affected by dementia by giving them one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions. The unique dementia expertise and experience an Admiral Nurse brings is a lifeline – it helps families to live more positively with dementia in the present, and to face the challenges of tomorrow with more confidence and less fear. If you would like any more information about the Leicestershire Dementia UK Fundraising group or the Night to Remember event, you can email them at Leicestershirefundraisinggroup@gmail.com or find them on social media Facebook - Admiral Nurses for Leicestershire - Instagram - admiral.nurses.leicestershire - Twitter - leicsadmiral If you or a family member are facing dementia and need some support, Dementia UK’s helpline number is 0800 888 6678 where you can speak to an Admiral Nurse.

BIRSTALL AND DISTRICT ART SOCIETY 24th ANNUAL EXHIBITION - 4th and 5th NOVEMBER 2018 MARY HOUGHTON ROSE BOWL WINNER

Birstall and District Art Society held its 24th Annual Exhibition this year, which was formally opened by Cllr Ann Marshall, Chair of Birstall Parish Council.

BETTY CHAMBERLAIN ‘3 TULIPS’

Over 100 framed paintings were displayed, covering a wide variety of media and subjects; and again the standard was very high. Over 300 visitors attended over the two days, 189 on Saturday and 125 on Sunday. A variety of techniques were displayed, including watercolour, acrylics, oils, abstract, experimental and mixed-media, covering categories from portraits and figures, landscape, urban and rural life, animals and flowers. There was, literally, something for everyone to enjoy. A wide range of ‘mounted-originals’ were on view, supplied unframed in attractive mounts. Junior members (under the age of 18) were also represented and the standard of work was very high from all exhibitors. Entry was free to all visitors, who were asked to vote for the ‘Best Painting in the Show’. The result of this vote will be announced at the Annual General Meeting of the Society on 11th December 2018 and published in the ‘Birstall News’. A donation from catalogue sales will be forwarded to LOROS.

STUART JONES TROPHY WINNER GEMMA VISSANI ‘BEHOLDER’

This year the Mary Houghton Rose Bowl (donated by the Birstall Parish Council) for Abstract/Experimental work was presented to Betty Chamberlain for her painting entitled ‘3 Tulips’. Joe Crowther won the Water and Boats category, as well the Norman Sims Trophy for best painting, selected by the distinguished panel of Judges at the Preview Evening, for ‘Waiting to Sail’. Gemma Vissani won the Junior category and the Stuart Jones Trophy with her excellent offering, ‘Beholder’. NORMAN SIMS TROPHY WINNER JOE CROWTHER - ‘WAITING TO SAIL’

Plastic free Rothley A quiet revolution has started in Rothley. A group of local people have got together and joined 400 communities across the UK who are working towards becoming a plastic free community. Surfers against Sewage in Cornwall started the project, and the Rothley group is following their objectives in reducing the amount of single-use plastic in the village. They’ll be working with organisations, businesses and individuals across the village to help make a difference. Whether it’s taking a reusable cup with you when you’re out or about, turning down drinking straws, or carrying your bags with you when you shop, we can all do something to make changes. We can influence the big corporations who use them too. It’s easy to feel there’s nothing you can do. But this group is working to make a real difference. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 15th January – contact plasticfreerothley@gmail.com to find out details, go to the Facebook page, or phone 07764941574.

Newtown Linford Choral Society In 2019 the Choral Society will be celebrating the twentieth anniversary of its foundation. The Choral Society started as a small group meeting in a house in the village, and since then has grown into a very successful community choir of 73 singers. Its inspirational Musical Director throughout has been Dr Sue Ford.

Stay well this winter The NHS are running a campaign to keep you informed on how you can stay well this winter and stay out of hospital. Here’s some top tips to help you, your family and friends keep healthy and be well-prepared for the colder months. If you start to feel unwell, even if it is just a cough or cold, don’t wait until it gets more serious – get help from your pharmacist. If you have a long-term health condition like COPD, bronchitis, emphysema, diabetes, heart or kidney disease, or have suffered a stroke, get advice from your pharmacist or GP on how to keep well during the colder months. Remember to pick up your prescription before the Christmas holidays start. Many GPs and pharmacies will close over the holiday period. NHS 111 will help you get the right medical attention urgently or visit www.nhs.uk which can direct you to a local service that is open during the holiday period. Older neighbours, relatives, friends and other elderly members of the community are more vulnerable in the winter months and may need a bit of extra help this winter, so make sure you keep in touch. It is important to keep warm in winter, both inside and out as it can help to prevent colds, flu and more serious health problems, such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression. Leaflets from Anstey Surgery and the NHS website www.nhs.uk/staywell give more advice for people with long term conditions, people over 65 and people caring for relatives.

Calling all knitters

ROTHLEY/BIRSTALL BIRDWATCHING CLUB

Time to dig out those knitting needles for the Big Knit It’s the return of the Big Knit campaign and Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling on Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to join in and get knitting!

ROTHLEY/BIRSTALL BIRDWATCHING CLUB presents: Tuesday, January 8th. at 7.30 p.m. THE BIRDS OF SOUTHERN PORTUGAL by Carl Baggott

Whether a knitting ninja, purling pro, crochet connoisseur or just keen to have a go it’s time to get wild about wool and join the Big Knit. Now in its 15th year, the campaign is recruiting knitters to help create an impressive 1.6 million hats to adorn innocent smoothie bottles. For each be-hatted smoothie sold*, Age UK receives 25p, and that money helps the Charity support older people who are facing later life alone. Tony Donovan, Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland said: “We need local people to join us and help knit as many miniature hats as possible this winter to help us hit our huge 80,000 local target. It’s such a fun campaign to get behind and it does so much to help older people in our area.

A new destination for us to start our 2019 programme. Southern Portugal is probably one of the easier destinations to go to from the U.K. Carl will show us the countryside and different habitats along with an insight into the different species of birds to be found in this quieter corner of Europe. Could just be a place to add to your list in the Spring. The Rothley Centre, 12 Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley, LE7 7PR. Members are fee. Visitors ÂŁ2.50. New members and visitors are always welcome. Ample free car parking on site.

Christmas Services Rothley Methodist Church

“The money raised will make a big difference to the lives of older people by funding our hugely important services and classes. These services, which include Day Care, dementia support, Men in Sheds and befriending amongst so many others, give local older people the chance to come along and make friends, learn new skills and most importantly have fun. Last year alone, more than one million hats were lovingly created nationally, with designs including the hugely popular unicorn, grizzly bear, fluffy sheep and desert island.

Saturday 22nd December- 3-5pm Christmas Messy Church Party. Crafts, food and story time. All welcome

Bara Amouyal, innocent drinks, said: “The Big Knit has had such an incredible amount of support over the past 15 years and we are hugely grateful – we love seeing what miniature creations the nation can come up with! Through the Big Knit campaign, we want to do everything we can to make a difference to the lives of older people.

Christmas Eve 24th December 4pm All age worship with Christingles

For more information on The Big Knit contact Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland on 0116 2992233 or visit https://www.ageuk.org.uk/leics/get-involved/fundraising/ the-big-knit/. Please send completed hats to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland at Lansdowne House, 113 Princess Road East, Leicester LE1 7LA or hand them in at any of our 24 shops or Resource Centres.

Merry Christmas

Speaking about the event Zoe Edwards, Fundraising and Events Manager at Alex’s Wish said, “We are flabbergasted! This was our largest ever Ball and the most we have ever raised at our annual Ball. We just want to say a huge thank you to our lovely supporters who join us each year as well as those who came along for the very first time. “We held this year’s event in Nottinghamshire at The Village Hotel because we couldn’t find a venue big enough in Leicestershire to accommodate us all! We would like to thank The Village Hotel for sponsoring our pre-dinner drinks and for being amazing hosts, as well as B Audio Visual for sponsoring all of the audio visual and room theming, Corporate Motion for producing the video on the night and NEXT Plc for helping cover some of the costs. A huge thank you to everyone who donated prizes for our auction, raffle and win-a-holiday including Wonderland Memorabilia who organised our silent auction as well as managed our live auction on the night. Guests were welcomed to a Mardi Gras inspired event complete with Mardi Gras dancers. Andy Miller was the host for the evening and guests were entertained by singer Brendan Green and Likuid Blu. Emma Hallam, founder of Alex’s Wish and mum to Alex – after whom the charity is named – said, “This event has been a highlight of our year and our fundraising calendar for many years now and continues to be of huge importance to us. To see over 210 people enjoying themselves whilst raising vital funds for Alex’s Wish was just fantastic. Thank you to everyone who joined us and supported us. The funds raised will be invested into vital research into finding effective treatments and – ultimately – a cure for this horrible life limiting muscle wasting disease that is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

HIGHCLIFFE AMATEUR THEATRICAL SOCIETY (HATS) PANTOMIME 2018/19

Council staff donate gift parcels to local charity

“Babes in the Wood” by Paul Reakes, presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd. January 10th, 11th, and 12th 2019. Rehearsals are now in full swing, with Robin determined to challenge the nasty Sheriff of Nottingham, in more ways than one.

Staff members from Charnwood Borough Council have donated around 50 gift parcels to Living without Abuse. The charity supports people experiencing domestic abuse across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The more we practise, the nastier the Sheriff is becoming, he seems to think that he can win anything and anyone, just be raising his voice and ordering people around.

Nadia Ansari, chair of the Council’s staff forum, said: “Christmas is the season of giving so our staff forum wanted to support a local charity and create gift parcels for the women and families being supported by Living without Abuse over the festive period.

Well, as we all know, that never works does it. The townsfolk along with others will be hoping that someone will come along and sort the Sheriff out. I wonder who will be able to do that???? Have you any ideas? Can you guess? Your help will be needed to make sure that the “goodie” wins the day. So get your voices ready, lots of interaction is needed, shout and boo and jeer so the Sheriff gets the message that he is not the super duper hero of the Panto.

“We delivered the parcels to the charity which was really overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity and so grateful.” Geoff Parker, chief executive at the Council, said. “I’d like to thank all of the staff members who took the time to donate and help organise the delivery. What a fantastic team effort.”

For all of our regular audience members, see if you can identify the characters, clearly they are in disguise so it might take you a few minutes, but I am sure you will soon work it out. For our new audience members, I am sure that you will soon be coming back as much welcomed regulars and will also be able to identify people in a flash. Our scenery and costume crew are once again doing a fabulous job as you have come to expect, so a big thanks goes to them.

Donations in the parcels included essentials items such as toiletries, hats, scarves, gloves, festive gifts and chocolates. The gift parcels will be given to women and families staying at the charity’s refuse accommodation over Christmas.

So, to get you in the mood here are a few jokes. Here goes. 1.

What has two holes for the eyes and a slit for the beak? - A Robin Hood!

2.

What did the Sheriff of Nottingham say when Robin fired at him ? That was an arrow escape!

3.

Where did Robin's Merry Men go to buy their sweets? - The Friars Tuck Shop!
