Highcliffe Amateur Theatrical Society (HATS). Paint the Town Red Wow. What a success. We tried something very different this time. We veered away from the traditional, at times alternative pantomimes, to bring you something new and exciting. Two of our cast worked hard to produce something that would capture your attention, whilst making you think about what might happen. The audience didn’t have the benefit of knowing the story, so could not predict what might happen.

Free trees to make Leicestershire green, Still time to apply Farmers, landowners and community groups are being encouraged to help improve the green areas of Leicestershire by applying for free trees. We have teamed up with the Woodland Trust to encourage farmers and community groups to provide a habitat for wildlife by planting trees across Charnwood, Hinckley and Bosworth and Blaby areas. Applicants can apply for:

The innovative journey of taking you back in time to the cowboys and the saloon bar certainly kept your attention to the very end. As with all pantomimes there was a good deal of audience participation, and yes as predicted in our promotional article, this was something for the adults to relive from their childhoods. So, who was the loudest in the audience, the children? “Oh not it wasn’t”. The adults “Oh yes it was”. The gleam in the adults eyes as they saw the cowboys on stage, enjoying it to the full, whilst pretending they were there only there to accompany their children/grandchildren. But hey, as predicted, lots of unexpected characters including, a nun, a Scottish family, an Indian squaw, medicine man, drunk, comedy couple, dame and the nasty cowboys. Booooooo. Not forgetting Santa, who was kidnapped, had the children’s presents stolen and got tied up in a cave. But it all came good in the end, Santa was set free and the children had a good time. There was even some romance going on. As the saying goes “a good time was had by all”. Here is a selection of reviews left on our face book page by some of our audience. “I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Lots of laughs the whole night through. Loved it” Gareth Watson “Good fun was had by all, special mention to the dynamic duo Geek and Gonk, they bounce off each other like a married couple” Joe William “All in all you have entertained us with a smashing performance” Helen Bauer So thank you all for supporting us, hopefully see you at our next production. Watch this space.

Plans are being drawn up to increase fees paid to foster carers joining our team. The proposals would see first time foster carers - and those currently at the lower end of the payment scale - receive up to £40 per week more.

The proposed changes are part of a longer term strategy to strengthen the support given to our children and young people in care, bolster fostering recruitment and improve training for existing carers. The move would cost £260,000 and is part of wider plans to save £3 million by recruiting more in-house foster carers, ensuring that Leicestershire’s children in care can remain in the county. Placing a child with an independent fostering agency costs around £15,000 more than with an in-house carer. While we know that prospective foster carers are motivated by the desire to help children and young people rather than money, we also recognise that fostering needs to be financially viable for people. Councillor Ivan Ould, cabinet member for children and families said “We have set ourselves some tough recruitment targets in foster care recruitment this year, and in order to make sure we’re attracting the foster carers of tomorrow, we’re proposing to increase the rates that a first time foster carer receives, and make sure that our current carers at that level also receive an uplift in their fees. The wider plans would aim to strengthen support to vulnerable children in care (and those that could be taken into care) alongside a further developed package of support and training for foster carers. The proposals have been put together following consultation with other local authorities, comparisons with independent fostering agencies and discussions with current foster carers about the fees, support and training they receive. The proposal will be discussed at cabinet on 9 January. If given the go ahead, the next step would be to consult with foster carers and members of the public on the planned fee changes. Prospective foster carers can visit www.fosteringleicestershire.com or call 0116 305 0505 for more information and an informal chat with the council’s fostering recruitment team.

Call to smokers: Be a quitter and get fitter! Smokers set to benefit from range of healthy incentives to encourage them to give up Smokers in Leicestershire are set to benefit from a range of healthy incentives to encourage them to break the habit in the New Year. The county council’s QuitReady stop smoking service has teamed up with borough and district councils to offer January quitters the opportunity to try out - for free - local leisure facilities and exercise classes . . . if they stay smoke free for four weeks or more. Smokers who wish to take advantage of the New Year fitness offer should contact QuitReady, who also provide 12 weeks of free support, advice and stop smoking treatment by visiting www.quitready.co.uk, calling 0345 646 6666, or texting “ready” to 66777. Pam Posnett, county councillor - “It’s great that we have been able to link up with district and borough councils and their leisure facilities as the New Year is the most popular time of year for people to quit smoking. It’s a chance to make those New Year resolutions stick as the support offers people the best chance of quitting smoking for good and developing healthy habits which last a lifetime

Details of the sessions will be available to view at www.shuttlewood-clarke.org in the New Year. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis – For more information please call Helen Baxter on 01530 244914 or email helen@shuttlewood-clarke.org

Enderby couple Nick and Heidi can already say they have gone from being quitters to becoming fitter. The couple contacted QuitReady, and successfully quit with the support of their advisor and use of e-cigarettes. They have both been smoke free for more than 12 weeks.

Heidi said: “I’ve joined a gym and started exercise classes and I feel so much better exercising now I don’t smoke. I’ve got so much more energy and I can run without my chest hurting.”

Nick said: “The kids were getting on at us to stop, and I’m not getting any younger, so I thought it was time to start looking after myself and get a bit fitter. I’ve started running a couple of times a week and we’ve also taken up badminton.”

Newtown Linford Choral Society: A Concert For Peace As everybody knows, the year 2018 marks the centenary of the end of the First World War. All previous wars were eclipsed by the scale of its destruction, and in the decade that followed it became known as ‘The War to end all Wars’ - sadly that has not been the case. The Choral Society’s concert on Friday 2 and Sat 3 February 2018 in Ratby Church will reflect hopes that have been expressed for a lasting peace in the world. Orchestral accompaniment will be provided by the Fortissimo Quartet and virtuoso cellist Maxine McGinnes. There will also be a professional soprano soloist Bethan Williams, and Choral Society soloists Clive Hilton and John Williams. One of the works to be performed will be ‘Eternal Light’, which is a Requiem composed in 2008 by Howard Goodall.. He has stated that his aim in composing this lovely piece of music aim was to provide solace for the grieving. In addition to winning plaudits for his classical compositions Howard Goodall has also won many awards for music that he has composed for TV and radio, including The Vicar of Dibley, Blackadder, and Mr Bean!

7th-25th FEBRUARY

Other music to be performed at the concert will include the Prayer of St Francis (by Allen Pote), Thou Wilt Keep Him in Perfect Peace (Wesley), extracts from The Armed Man (by Karl Jenkins), and two anthems by John Rutter.

Welcome to Leicester Comedy Festival – the official comedy party for the UK! THE MONDAY CLUB CROPSTON AND THURCASTON

The year 2017 has been tinged with sadness since the loss of some of our longstanding members, but new ladies have joined over the year and we move on positively, having enjoyed a full programme, with interesting speakers and pleasant social events.

GONE WITH THE WIND; the lost Windmills of Leicestershire

On Monday 11th December, members and their guests gathered at Birstall Golf Club for our annual Christmas lunch. Our meal was of the high standard we have come to expect from the catering staff at Birstall Golf Club and was appreciated by all.

TALK BY Mark Temple

In January, for the first meeting of the year, we had been entertained very well by Felicity Austin with her rousing “Story of the Music Hall”, so decided to invite her back to provide some after lunch entertainment in December. Aptly on this occasion, we heard about “An Old Fashioned Christmas”, an atmospheric mix of fact, poems, games with audience participation, songs and stories about Christmas past and the traditions that have developed over many years, including the major influence of the Victorians.

MONDAY 19th February 2018 WOODHOUSE EAVES VILLAGE HALL at 7.30pm

At one time every family’s diet included bread which relied on a constant supply of fresh flour. So virtually every village had a mill of some sort, a watermill if there was a suitable stream, or if not, We now look forward to 2018 with a new programme of speakers and events, as follows: a windmill was placed on an elevated position January 8th Speaker: Graham Jackson – “The Cottage Garden Year” where its sails could catch the wind. At their peak At one time every family’s diet included bread which relied February 12th Annual General Meeting & in-house entertainment in 1835 there were believed to be 152 mills in March 12th Speaker: Sandra Moore Leicestershire, and many were locally such as f “Living Memories – Characters from Belgrave Cemetery” Woodhouse Eaves, Markfield, Mountsorrel, Shepshed etc. Mark has tried to gather together April 9th Speaker: Roy Wood – “How to Enjoy a Healthy & Wealthy Retirement” all the photographic images that have survived May 14th Outing to be arranged and has also made a collection of milling stories. June 11th Speaker: Gwyneth Milner – “Holidays Home & Abroad for the Blind” He knows of the existence of many mills but as far as he knows their images have been lost. July 9th Strawberry tea to be arranged August 13th

Speaker: Anne Halsey – “Egypt – the Ancient Land of the Pharaohs”

September 10th

Speaker: Adele Fricker – “Indian Head Massage & Demonstration” Plus, sale of Harvest produce

FUTURE EVENTS Monday 19th March 2018 brief AGM followed by a 1970 film “Leicestershire a Heritage at Risk”, at Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall at 7.30pm. You will not be surprised that most of the issues raised are still the same today. It is a delightful film as it brings back memories of familiar sights 48 years ago of rural Leicestershire and Charnwood Forest. The meeting will conclude with a brief discussion of the issues raised led by the CPRE. For further information contact Dick Howard or look at our website www.focf.org.uk Visitors welcome £3 on the door. Dick Howard 01530 245373
