THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY
Our last Meeting for the year 2014, was a huge success in so far as our Speaker was Mr. Mike Leonard and his subject was “An Irreverent Approach to Political Correctness”. For nearly one hour Mike speedily took us through a vast number of quotations and expressions (quite a few of which we were totally unaware existed)! Mike had collected Quotations from Newspapers covering the past year. When undertaking speaking to Clubs etc., he kept fastidiously to current News which from our point of view, was truly amazing considering the amount of data he had amassed in such a short time. On a daily basis we were all guilty of expressions we had grown up with over the years and thought nothing of any possible “incorrectness or offence” that could have been misconstrued. The absurdity of many Quotations gave rise to immense incredulity from the audience to the point that we felt there was no hope for many of us to change our ways, One might become
more aware of trying not to hurt anyone’s’ feelings, but as to minding one’s “Ps and Qs” in all situations only thought up by the “Powers that be” -well, that would be another matter!!. The interaction from the audience and the laughter that ensued, not to mention the many contributions, added up to a very happy Meeting, concluding with our customary cups of tea and biscuits. Our next Meeting will be on JANUARY MONDAY 12th at 2.15 pm, when we hope to see old and NEW Members. Please give us a chance to welcome you in the New Year, to a very warm and friendly Club. Any information required please ring 0116 2363467. In the meantime may I wish all Readers a very Blessed and Festive Christmas, followed by a very Healthy, Happy New Year.
Ann Farndon.
Your dog can give blood Like human donors, dogs can save lives by donating blood. The whole process involving the collection of blood is very easy and the team are very good at putting the owner and donor at ease. To start off there is a 10 to 15 minute health check followed by a similar period donating 450 ml of lifesaving blood. Just like humans there is a 5 to 10 minute rest period with refreshments and a doggy bag. Pet Blood bank is the only charity that provides a canine blood bank service for all veterinary practitioners across the UK. To be a a donor, your dog needs to be fit and healthy, between one and 8 years old. Weigh more than 25kg, have a good temperament, never travelled abroad, vaccinated and not on any medication.

Charnwood District Adventure Weekend Nearly 300 Beavers and over 70 Cubs and Scouts went to Oaks in Charnwood Scout Campsite for a weekend of exciting adventures. The Beavers were there for an action packed fun day, taking part in a fantastic range of activities, from parachute games to the Black Hole. Aleck from Rothley Beavers said “I loved the black hole, it was pitch black and I just went round and round."

Going through various checkpoints and facing the various different challenges along the way, such as making a capital T out of blocks, passing through a hoop without touching the sides and map reading. Max from Barrow Scouts said “We had to try and go through the hoop without touching the sides, it was hard to do, but it was fun!” Once all the activities had finished the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts had a camp fire, and 54 Beavers where invested into the movement. The Scouts also had the opportunity to cook their own dinners on open fires. To read more about the weekend and see the photos and video visit the website: www.charnwoodscouts.org.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Rothley & Mountsorrel areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get
from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Say NO to more Houses in Rothley Over 300 households have joined forces to oppose a housing development for 175 homes on a greenfield site off Westfield Lane, Rothley. The application has now been submitted and can be viewed on Charnwood’s Planning Explorer by searching for P/14/2083/2. We will be transporting our many letters of objection to Charnwood Borough Council on one of the heritage trains of the Great Central Railway, at 10.15 on Friday 21st November leaving from the Grade II listed Rothley Station, a short distance from the proposed development. Residents have serious concerns over the pressure the scheme will place on already congested roads, the newly built Rothley Primary School and parking for the village shops. There is no GP surgery in Rothley so residents already have to travel to Mountsorrel or Birstall to see a doctor. Almost 650 houses have permission to be built in the village already but have yet to be constructed. Can you imagine the effect that the cars and people from these estates alone will have on village life, let alone adding 175 more houses to the equation? I think it’s highly likely we will be seeing more serious accidents like the crash between a bus and a tractor on North Street last January. The provision of an entrance onto Westfield Lane would involve the felling of beautiful mature trees in the Rothley Ridgeway Conservation Area. Villagers also have serious concerns about the safety of the location of
the entrance as it is in a dip and near a sharp bend. Junctions for Woodgate, Templar Way and Rothley Cricket Ground are all in very close proximity, adding to the hazard. The site is opposite the oak tree lined parkland of Rothley Cricket Ground and the Grade 1 listed Rothley Temple. Only 2.5% of listed buildings are given Grade I status and Rothley Temple is of international importance due to its connections to the Knights Templar, William Wilberforce and the abolition of slavery. The architecturally significant conservation area of Rothley Ridgeway adjoins 2 sides of the development site. An area so rich in heritage must be preserved for future generations. So many people living in the surrounding Charnwood villages will be affected by this development, not just those living in Rothley.
A MUSICAL BOX OF SURPRISES AND DELIGHTS by BARRY COLLETT
Saturday 22nd November 2014 10.30-16.30 The Old School Rooms, School St., Rothley The works of most great composers contain forgotten corners, unknown or overlooked pieces, or uncharacteristic works, many of which shed new and unexpected light on the composers’ reputation. The morning session will introduce many of these intriguing works. The afternoon will take the opposite course, and look at brilliant and exciting music written by composers too readily written off as second rate, one work composers, or even totally forgotten composers who deserve a better fate. Come and enjoy some unexpected and delicious musical surprises. Barry Collett was Director of Music at Rutland College, founded the Rutland Sinfonia in 1975, made 11 recordings both as conductor and pianist and is

TIME CAPSULE SEALED AT ROTHLEY SCHOOL A Time Capsule, capturing life at Rothley Primary School, has been sealed during an Assembly attended by the whole School. Pupils, teachers and Governors, along with village and church representatives, all placed items in the capsule. Designed to capture the essence of the school, both today and from the School’s past 112 years on its present site, the Capsule included a whole range of different artefacts. These included letters from pupils in Year 5 to pupils of the future, a school report from a past pupil, Ofsted and National Curriculum documentation, School Newsletters and Reports, a school food menu, photographs, items of school uniform, building plans, key historical legal documents, local newspapers and items from each of the churches in the village along with the Parish Council.
‘this Assembly was a piece of history in the making and will provide an abiding memory for the all the children and adults present. I am sure the contents of the Time Capsule will be fascinating to those who open it in years to come and will give a real insight into school life in 2014. Placed, in the school foyer in the new school, it will provide a unique bridge connecting the rich and varied history of the school over the past 112 years to the next exciting chapter in the life of the school in its new building.’ The Sealing of the Time Capsule accompanied an Exhibition detailing the history of the school whilst on the Mountsorrel Lane site. Terry Sheppard, local historian of the Rothley Heritage Trust and Exhibition Coordinator, commented ‘the interest in the exhibition has surpassed all our expectations and the
memories shared and school friendships rekindled has been a privilege to capture. The contents of the Time Capsule will, hopefully, be a source of enjoyment and historical interest when it is opened many years from now.’ Kate Croden, School Foundation Governor, past teacher at the school and Joint Co ordinator of the School Exhibition, added: ‘The interest and memories of those who attended the Exhibition – many of whom have captured them in the Memories Book has made the whole Exhibition extremely worthwhile and added to the collective knowledge of the school. I hope the Time Capsule will generate a similar level of interest when it is eventually opened by a future generation’.
1902 Rothley School with lead Infants Teacher Miss Lilian Haywood & Assistant Miss Morley
Everyone then witnessed John Barratt, a local Cabinet Maker, seal shut the English Oak Capsule. The capsule will be placed on view in the wall of the new school building on the site of Brookfield Farm, off Hallfields Lane. Mrs Fiona Parr, Head Teacher commented –

ROTHLEY PARK GOLF CLUB Help for Heroes Charity Golf Day at Rothley Park A D-Day Landings theme was used for a fund-raising event held on Sunday 12 October at Rothley Park Golf Club. 40 golfers played in teams of 4 in a cross- country competition, and over 30 more members came to give their support and joined in the fun. Dress for the occasion included the Walking Wounded, Evacuees, GI’s, American Navy, WAF, Land girls, Home Guard and many more. The competition was played over an 8 hole course specially designed for the day. This meant teeing off on one hole and putting out on a different hole, having played over unmapped terrain designated as mine fields. (e.g. 1st tee to 2nd green, 3rd tee to 4th green etc). Tea and home-made cakes were served half way round at the NAAFI, courtesy of Tom and Leanne. Anyone taking longer than 3 hours to complete the competition was to be arrested as a POW. Everyone enjoyed an excellent lunch afterwards accompanied by music of the era, and followed by the prize presentation. The beautifully decorated prize table had a theme of war time rations, and included rarities such as eggs and preserves all donated by members. First prize went to brothers James and Simon Green and their two sons. The afternoon concluded with Rule Britannia, Churchill’s Victory Speech and Land of Hope and Glory, which didn’t leave a dry eye in the house. The proceeds from the day including donations, raffle and auction resulted in a magnificent donation of £1027 for Help for Heroes from the day. A very successful day conceived and organised along the lines of a military operation by Mrs. Pat Martin, a past Lady President of the Club. Her team of helpers included Robert and June Hallam, and Anna Wykes. For more information contact loupreedy@gmail.com

Entrance £5 per person. 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Tea and coffee interval included in the price, followed by a Q&A session. End around. 9.30 pm. Rothley CCA.

Leaf some green stuff in the garden The clocks have gone back, and we will be putting our gardens to sleep for the winter. But this autumn, when you tidy up, do not tidy away too much. Many insects and wild creatures will be relying on some ground cover or hideaway to call ‘home’ for the winter. Several piles of twigs or prunings, left around your garden in discreet places, will provide great winter ‘snugs’ for toads, grass snakes and other small garden inhabitants. ‘Spent’ seed heads provide cover and food for birds over the winter.
