Marie Curie Counts on Collection Volunteers With only 6 weeks to go, Marie Curie is appealing for local volunteers to help at their Christmas Collections. Collections are an integral part of the Marie Curie fundraising calendar and without them it would not be possible to provide the necessary nursing care for our terminally ill patients and their families in Leicestershire & Rutland. The local Marie Curie fundraising team are seeking collectors to help at collection days in supermarkets, stores and towns. Whilst everyone else will be preparing for Father Christmas to arrive this Christmas Eve, our nurses will be starting their night shift. Last year, one of our nurses was quizzed by a young son of a patient as he was concerned Father Christmas would not visit as she stays awake all night to look after his Daddy. Sue, very quickly explained that Marie Curie has a special agreement with the big man himself, that our nurses can close their eyes when he arrives at the house so that she does not see him. The nurses do such things so that our families can be at home during the festive period where they feel most comfortable and with their loved ones. Claire Korsakovs, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser for Leicestershire & Rutland says “As a collector you’ll be able to raise vital money for people like Sue’s patient to spend their Christmas at home where they wish to be. Our collection slots are only two hours long and will most definitely leave you with that Christmas Cheer.” Whether you’re a seasonal fundraiser or a newcomer looking to get involved for the first time, the local Marie Curie fundraising office would love to hear from you. To become a Marie Curie Collector, you need to be aged 16 or over. Children are welcome to collect alongside a parent or guardian. For more information for how you can get involved, please contact Claire Korsakovs on 07595 087169 or claire.korsakovs@mariecurie.org.uk

Come and Sing Duruflé's Requiem – one day workshop in Loughborough – BOOK NOW! Charnwood Voices is delighted to invite you to its Come and Sing workshop on Saturday January 18TH 2020 at Trinity Methodist Church Centre in Loughborough. Registration will be at 10am and the day will end with a 5.30pm performance. Pre-booking is essential. It is open to all singers, whether you sing regularly with a choir or not. Many of the singers who come will not have sung the music before. It does help if you are able to read music to some degree and have listened to the piece before the day, but there are always some singers present who have done the piece before and lead the way. The day is hard work but great fun and very rewarding. We finish the afternoon with an informal performance to amaze our audience of friends and family with what we have achieved during the day. Our workshop leader, Charnwood Voices’ Musical Director Nicholas Scott-Burt writes, “The Requiem by Maurice Duruflé is one of the most beautiful examples of liturgical music from the 20th century. Strongly influenced by Fauré's famous setting of the same text, it is full of gloriously sing-able lines and magical harmonies. We have a whole day to master this work of such ethereal, heartrending magnificence. A wonderful work to sing: one or two tricky corners certainly along the way, but plenty of time for us to find our way confidently around those!” Our accompanist and organist will be Richard Dunster-Sigtermans. There are limited places and this workshop has booked up in the past, so BOOK NOW! The cost will be £15 per person and application forms are available to download from our website www.charnwoodvoices.org.uk Library copies of the music will be available on the day for those who request them on their booking forms. This will be a great opportunity to take part in this wonderful piece!

‘Making Christmas Special’ for Older people spending Christmas Day in What is Christmas Jumper hospital. Day and when is it?
Older people spending Christmas in one of Leicester’s Hospitals will once again receive a gift bag this year, donated by the generous local community.
Christmas Jumper Day is an annual charity event it is held on December 13th, with 100% of proceeds going to the charity ‘Save the Children’. Individuals and Organisations, businesses and schools, find their most festive jumpers and wear the jumpers to work for the day instead of normal clothes or uniforms, to raise funds through sponsorship. A cheerful and festive way or raising funds and awareness for Save the Children in time for Christmas. Often workers and students add to the fun by competing for the best festive jumper prize, some workplaces get very competitive and hold official competitions for the prize, while jumper-wearers, friends, families and co-workers sponsor the festive jumpers and thus the funds are raised for Save the Children. Money can be pledged via Save the Children’s Website, by text, by post and online. So far over 4 million pounds has been raised by this annual event, so it is certainly something to consider taking part in and adding it as a new tradition among your festivities. Save the Children has a fundraising leaderboard, showing the amounts that teams have raised, which is a good incentive, they also show photographs of some participants, as well as giving details of what the raised money is being used for. Christmas Jumper Day is a great photo opportunity for companies and teams to show their community spirit and advertise their company as an approachable and caring organization.
ST. JAMES MONDAY GROUP The funds raised for our charity for this year (Glebe House, Loughborough) were greatly boosted by an 'Open Bungalow Day' hosted by one of our members and well attended both in the morning and afternoon with appropriate (and delicious) foods and drinks and balloons (not delicious)! Glebe House (now based in the old Magistrates building opposite the Beehive car park), provides (and I quote) "Flexible services for people with learning disabilities". This Open Day raised a wonderful £300.00 to add to the eventual total. Our next years charity will be nominated by members in February 2020 at our usual meeting on the 2nd Monday of the month. Our December meeting will be our Christmas party, which is a chance to relax and talk to each other and give and receive a surprise present! The programme planning for 2020 is taking shape with diverse events, from our lunch in January at the British Legion to various speakers and outings. If you would like to join us we will be in the Day Centre rooms of the Village Hall at 7.30 p.m. on the 2nd Monday of every month.

‘Making Christmas Special’ is a collaborative campaign between Leicester’s Hospitals, Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland and Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT). Every year, there are patients too ill to leave hospital and spend Christmas Day with their loved ones. ‘Making Christmas Special’ aims to spread a little festive cheer to older patients who will be spending Christmas in one of Leicester’s Hospitals. Now in its seventh year, the campaign is encouraging the local community to donate a small gift bag that will be distributed by hospital staff and volunteers to older patients on Christmas Day. In 2018, the public of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland showed a fantastic amount of generosity by donating over 1,500 gifts. In past years, the campaign has been so successful that donated gifts exceeded the need in Leicester’s Hospitals and could be shared with some community hospitals. There are gift tags to download and packaging and gift guidelines on the Leicester Hospitals website. Tony Donovan, Executive Director at Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland, added: “This campaign makes an enormous difference to older patients who have to spend Christmas in hospital and the generosity of the community always brings a smile to their face. We’re delighted to be working with Leicester’s Hospitals and Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust to bring the Christmas spirit to what could otherwise be a lonely time. Our shops and resource centres will act as donation points across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland for anyone who would like to offer a small gift.”
So how can you donate? It’s really simple! Visit the website of Leicester’s Hospitals (www.leicesterhospitals.nhs.uk) or Age UK (www.ageukleics.org.uk) to download and print a gift tag. Write your message on the gift tag and tick whether the gift is suitable for a man, suitable for a woman, or suitable for anyone. Attach the tag to a small gift bag containing unwrapped gifts such as lip balm, hand lotion, slipper socks, bed socks, biscuits, sweets, cereal bars, hot chocolate or coffee sachets, pens, pencils, and puzzle books. The websites have a full list of what could be donated and what we cannot accept. Take your gift bag/s to the main receptions at the Royal Infirmary, General or Glenfield Hospital or to any Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland shop or resource centre in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Donations can be made throughout November and up until Friday 13th December 2019.

Friends of the Charnwood Forest On Monday 14th October Martin Speight of Severn Trent Water gave a talk to the Friends entitled “The Story of Charnwood Water Supply over the last 150 years” (but not quite). The importance of having a pure water supply was brought home by John Snow and the Broad Steet pump in 1854, during the cholera epidemic of the 1850’s in London. In an age when the theory of diseases was that they were caused by a miasma, and in the absence of the internet, news of his work did not spread all that fast. A miasma, or bad air, was believed to spread diseases through breathing. It was supposed to originate from rotting flesh and vegetable matter either spreading the disease through the air or changing the air in some way to cause the disease. The news of John Snow’s work spread relatively slowly, and the conservative nature of thinking caused it to be rejected time and again. It was not until the 1880’s that ‘science’ finally abandonned miasmas. The talk started with Henry Fearon, who was born in Ockenden, in Sussex, in 1802. He attended Cambridge University, and came to Loughborough as its rector in 1846. He it
was who championed a water supply in Loughborough – until his time each individual was virtually responsible for his/her supply, usually using a pump and ground water. Whether this was relatively pure or polluted was a matter of luck. His first efforts centred on the Blackbrook, where the dam of a reservoir for the Charnwood Forest canal had failed after 2 years, but this proved unacceptable to the local bigwigs. He finally settled on the Nanpantan reservoir, and a supply started on 31st August 1870. The reservoir was designed to hold 29 million gallons. It proved a success. The death toll fell. The result – more people, and a bigger demand. Original estimates did not include local industry, so this caused an even bigger demand on water. Clearly new sources were required. The problem then arouse that the city of Leicester was also looking for water, and so was competing with Loughborough to source it from Charnwood Forest. The city’s first reservoirs were sited at Thornton and Cropston. Loughborough finally got a supply from Blackbrook in 1906. As populations grew, so reservoirs had to be made bigger to hold
Dr D McNeil
more water. In the meantime Leicester had opened Swithland reservoir. After that the demand outstripped the ability of Charnwood to keep up, and supplies were sourced from Derbyshire in the Derwent valley. This source was shared initially by Leicester, Derby, Sheffield and Nottingham. Originally two relatively small reservoirs were constructed, but finally the Ladybower reservoir which was 3 times the size of either of the others. Still demand increase. Dove Valley, Staunton Harold and Foremark reservoirs follwed in the 1950’s, and Carsington was opened in 1989. These days water is also abstracted from gravel pits from beside the Trent. It was found that water seeping into the pits from that river was cleaned to some extent by its passage through the ground. Nowadays Charnwood Forest reservoirs have lost their importance; some are no longer used, whilst others have only a minor roll to play. Cropston still holds its importance as the main water works for the city. Martyn Speight touched briefly on the idea of a network of supplies from across the country, but that, he hinted, was mere speculation at present.

Council wins award for work with stray dogs Charnwood Borough Council has been recognised by the RSPCA for its outstanding work with dogs. The RSPCA PawPrints Awards cover five areas of service provided by the public sector that has an impact on animal welfare, including stray dog services, housing, contingency planning, animal establishments licensing and kennelled dog welfare. Each award has three levels – bronze, silver and gold – and Charnwood Borough Council has won gold for its work to look after stray dogs in the borough, in partnership with College Garth Kennels in Hathern. In the past year, the council has collected 114 stray dogs from across the borough, a 25% decrease on last year when 151 strays were collected. They are taken to College Garth Kennels and kept there for a minimum of seven days. If unclaimed, the dogs are made available for rehoming. Councillor Margaret Smidowicz, lead member for regulatory services at the council, said: “It was great to discover that we have been recognised by the RSPCA for our work with stray dogs. “The environmental health team, along with the College Garth Kennels, do a superb job of ensuring that stray dogs in the borough stand the best chance to be collected and returned to their owners as quickly as possible. The gold award is very much appreciated and deserved, and we will continue to meet the standards required to ensure the highest level of care can be given when dealing with stray animals. There will be an event held for all the winners at the RICS in Parliament Square in London on November 26. For more information about how the council looks after stray animals visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/animals_stray To find out about more about the kennels, visit www.collegegarthkennels.co.uk.

The Charnwood Gardener Give the Gift of Gardening
Winter is a tricky time for gardeners. The days are short, the weather is often miserable and the jobs that need doing are largely messy and unappealing (picking up leaves, turning the compost heap, pruning that spiteful rose). But in the bleak midwinter comes the respite of the festive season, and what better opportunity to spread the good word of gardening? If you have loved ones who are yet to be turned on to all that is green and growing, here are some gift ideas to make this Christmas one to remember: Packets of seed make great stocking fillers; if you track down unusual vegetable seeds, you can really capture the imagination of young and old. Have a look for walking onions, purple carrots or the rather bizarre ‘celtuce’ – a stem of celery growing leaves of lettuce that taste like peas! For newbies who are keen to have a go but don’t know where to start, think about putting together a starter kit of essential garden tools. A good pair of secateurs are worth their weight in gold, while plastic leaf-grabbers are not only cheap but incredibly handy for all sorts of tasks. And there’s nothing they’ll use more than a decent hoe, which makes regular weeding a breeze. Winter is the time to plant bare-root soft fruit. Raspberries, currants and gooseberries will always be a welcome gift, or you could go for something more unusual (but just as delicious!) like jostaberries or loganberries. Forget a white Christmas - your recipient will be dreaming of their own summer-ripened fruit!
Happy Hoe-lidays!
DECEMBER TIP: Do you have an old apple tree that looks a bit of a mess? Remove all Dead, Diseased and Damaged branches, plus any that touch. Then start thinning and reducing – old apple-grower wisdom states that the branches should form a goblet shape (i.e. open in the centre) and have enough space between branches for a crow to fly through the canopy!

Amazing assistance dog charity close to finishing ‘centre of excellence’ in Osgathorpe OSGATHORPE based national charity, Canine Partners, is in the final stages of developing the first centre in the midlands for training assistance dogs. The charity, which trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with physical disabilities across the UK, is working hard to complete a brand new kennel block, which could help the charity to train and partner three times as many dogs. “The end is in sight to complete the new kennel building, which will house up to 40 dogs in training and will also include a veterinary room, kitchen and outdoor runs, giving us space to allow our dogs to rest between training sessions, says Richard Smith, Director of Operations at Canine Partners. “We are the only charity in the UK with a Midlands Training Centre providing assistance dogs for people with physical disabilities and the new kennels will enable even more life-changing partnerships to be formed. Canine Partners trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with disabilities, boosting their confidence and independence. The dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks including picking up and fetching items, opening doors and helping to undress a person. They can even help to load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency. “We are proud to be building this centre of excellence so that we can provide even more specialist training here in the Midlands. It will give the opportunity for more local people to apply for a canine partner where in the West Midlands alone, there are more than 13,000 people registered as disabled, says Richard. “By supporting and donating to our ‘Raise the Woof’ kennel appeal, you are helping us to move our amazing dogs in to their new kennels in the Spring of 2020 so that we can transform more lives for years to come.
