Maybe this is just the start? It is likely that this proposal, and the recently approved West Cross Lane development, are just the beginning of a large scale plan to fill the fields between Rothley and Mountsorrel with housing. Unfortunately, nearly all of these fields are owned by building companies. If we can stop this proposal, it may save the remaining fields from further speculative applications.

If you do care, you need to make your voice heard. Another application for 200 more houses on fields adjoining the Ridings, Westfield Lane, Templar Way and Breech Hedge is currently under consideration. David Wilson homes plan to submit an application in the coming weeks.

Most of the activities are suitable for children of all ages and families are welcome to come and watch and even take part in a number of events. Wild Card discounts are available for all activities and some sessions are free. The October holiday programme follows two very successful summer programmes, from the Council and its Leisure Centre partner, Fusion Lifestyle, that saw more than 2,500 children enjoy a host of summer fun. Over the summer holidays children took part in aerial trekking, canoeing and wheelchair basketball, before letting off steam and making friends during den building and treasure hunts. Sport was also brought to communities, with Mountsorrel, Loughborough and Thurmaston welcoming the Council’s Sport and Active Recreation team for hours of fun and games in the park. Councillor Stephen Hampson, Charnwood Borough Council’s cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “Fusion’s activities at Loughborough and Soar Valley Leisure Centres were also given the thumbs up, with more than 2,000 children taking to the pool, trampoline or sports hall. “I am very proud that in partnership we have been able to deliver a sporting summer suitable for children across the borough and look forward to seeing the October half-term programmes.” Nathaniel Leney, Sports and Community Development Manager for Fusion, said: “Giving young people something to do during the school holidays is vital to the community, whether it's providing child care so parents can work, giving young people their first experience of a new sport, or just giving them somewhere safe to go with their friends. “We are committed to getting and keeping people active and our school holiday programmes are just one of many things on offer at the leisure centres." For more information on half-term activities being run by the Council visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/holidayprogrammes or call 01509 634673. THE TH E GREAT G R EA T BIRSTALL BIR STA LL
BAKE BA K E OFF O FF The flour dusting has settled on 2014's Great Birstall Bake Off and Macmillan Coffee Morning, and with over 50 entries and more money raised it was bigger and more successful than ever. All categories were superbly supported, with both genders and all ages competing for the most prestigious prize in Birstall's bakery calendar. Meringues and Florentines aplenty, the judging panel of Kath Wright, Maxilyn Geary (WI) and her granddaughter kitty, Mr and Mrs Allen from Allen’s family Bakery, and our previous winner judges Faye North, Meg Roach and Laura Florence. All were astounded by the selection and the standard; in particular the 'Savoury' category which was better represented than ever before. And an exceptional mention must go to the Under 16's category who mustered more than 10 entrants and two winners.
But the competition did not seek to eclipse the real motive of the day; £1023.82 was raised for the Macmillan Cancer Trust - a truly staggering figure. The cakes were sold on the morning of Sunday 28th September in the resplendent garden of the White Horse in Birstall; the sun shone, the crowds flocked, and the coffee and cake flew out in record time to smash last year's total to smithereens. In fact, the combination of late September sun and cake was so inviting to most that by midday they had decided that a slightly stronger tipple was required to accompany the cake! The bunting and carthorse themed raffle stand was also a grand success and helped to create a wonderfully rustic British village aesthetic, with several people going home with a prize or two. Our thanks go to the following for their exceptionally kind contributions and donations; Amy Harrison - Graphic Designer, Purple Pear, Glenwood's, Café on the Corner, North's Delicatessen, Hannah's, Rawlins Community College, Tesco, Co-Op, Peppercorns, Greenacres, Lily & Grace, Wilkinson's, Brakes, Trust Inns and Matthew Clark. Special thanks must also go to the judging panel and to our regular Rob for his kind contribution.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Rothley & Mountsorrel areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get
from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The Leicestershire Advice Service for Social Care Providing Advice on Social Care issues and services for all Adults and Older People of Leicestershire The Leicestershire Advice Service for Social Care is a new service commissioned by Leicestershire County Council. LCPT (formerly Leicestershire Community Projects Trust), in partnership with The Carers Centre, is delivering the service. The service which is free, independent and confidential is for adults of all ages who are residents of Leicestershire and are in need of information and advice relating to social care. The request for information can be for yourself, a relative, friend or neighbour or if you are a professional the request for information can be for someone you are supporting. The service consists of two teams, one for people who identify themselves to be of working age and one for people who identify themselves as an older adult. When you contact the service you will be put through to the team best suited to deal with your enquiry. The need to access social care services is often something very new to families and it can be a daunting prospect trying to find out what help, support, activities, etc. are available and how to access these. The Leicestershire Advice Service team can take the pressure off you by carrying out any research relating to what is available to you and how to access whatever is available. This can include things like how to get a Community Care Assessment, how to get an Impact of Caring Assessment, and finding out about the different services and activities offered by the local authority, voluntary organisations and businesses. If we don’t have the answer immediately available we will investigate for you. Advice is normally offered by telephone; however, the team recognise that this isn’t always the best approach and alternative arrangements will be made when the telephone is not a suitable option. If you need information on: • What services are available for adults in Leicestershire • How to access services • Identifying relevant help • Maintaining maximum choice and control Then contact the Leicestershire Advice Service by: Telephoning 0116 2229555 or Text 07585975701 or Email info@lcp-trust.org.uk

Royal British Legion Poppy Charnwood BRAS Appeal and Remembrance in Training Course for Volunteers Mountsorrel 2014 On 25th October the 2014 Poppy Appeal will be launched. The Appeal benefits service people and their families from all the campaigns from the 1st World War to today – remember there has only been one year (1968) since the end of 2nd World War when a British Service person has not been killed on active duty somewhere across the world. The long term legacy of support that is needed for our service personnel and their families as a result of operations in Afghanistan alone is stark. There, since the start of operations, we have suffered 353 killed in action and a further 51 have died subsequently from wounds. In addition we have several thousand wounded in action many of whom will carry wound and disabilities for the rest of their lives. The Royal British Legion, with your support, and in co-operation with partner charities (including, Help for Heroes and individual Service and Regimental charities) is leading the way in delivering that support.
Nationally the Poppy Appeal raised over £34 million last year but we spend at least £1.7 million every week of the year on our longstanding welfare support initiatives which include: • Running our Care Homes and Break Centres • Providing a Benefits and Money Advice service which has helped over 11,000 individuals to date; • Making direct Grants totalling £24 million awarded to 42 organisations;
Following the success of the volunteer training programme completed in May, Charnwood BRAS are pleased to announce that they have some spaces available on the next training course for potential peer supporters. The 12 week training course will begin on 31st October and will run for 2 hours per week (with crèche facilities provided if needed). The only requirement for selection is that you have breastfed a child and are passionate about increasing breastfeeding rates across Charnwood by helping other mums to reach their feeding goals. If you are interested then please email charnwoodbras@hotmail.co.uk for an application form. To find out more about this friendly, dynamic group then please visit our website (www.charnwoodbras.co.uk) or Facebook page. We would encourage you to attend some of our workshops or events to find out more about what we do, talk to existing volunteers and consider if you can help us. Please only apply if you feel you can commit to being an active member of our group.
• Making individual grants totalling £18 million to over 22,000 beneficiaries. More detailed information about the work of the Legion can be found at http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/about-us/who-we-help If you would like to help with this year’s appeal please contact johncdoyle@talktalk.net Mountsorrel has a proud tradition of generously supporting the Poppy Appeal and the 2013 Appeal has to date raised £4238 please continue that support, give generously and wear your poppy with pride. We will be launching the village 2014 Appeal at the Sorrel Youth Cafe on the Green with a Coffee and Cake morning on 25th October at 10:30. This coincides with one of the Youth Cafe’s regular Coffee and Book Sale mornings so please come along and support both charities. The annual Remembrance Parade will take place on Sunday 9th November leaving the Green at 14:30 for a Service at St Peter’s Church at 15:00 and on 11th November there will be a short service at the Peace Garden on the junction of Sileby Lane and the Market Place at 11:00. Throughout the period of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day the Parish Council have arranged for the Castle Hill War Memorial to be floodlit as a mark of respect.

FILMREVIEW The Equalizer
Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) is a man of many mysteries. His career as a black ops commando came to an abrupt end when he faked his own death in favour of a quiet life in Boston, but this new, peaceful existence is merely the calm before the storm. When he encounters a troubled young girl in desperate need of help, he instinctively comes out of retirement in order to assist her. McCall quickly finds his taste for retribution awakened, and he is soon embroiled in a dangerous battle with an army of vicious Russian gangsters. Equipped with an array of weapons and skills, McCall is back to doing what he does best – helping the helpless seek justice, and wreaking havoc and vengeance upon the criminal underworld. Can he protect the peace whilst keeping his identity under wraps, or will he find himself face to face with his past?
Gone Girl Nick Dunne reports his wife Amy has gone missing on the night of their fifth wedding anniversary. A media storm begins and Nick finds himself thrust into the spotlight across the country. As the police investigation continues, his story begins to unravel. Confused stories, lies and his questionable behaviour cause the media and police to turn against him as the question is posed: did he kill his wife? Based on the massively successful novel of the same name, the author Gillian Flynn has adapted the novel for the screen, and with directions from David Fincher and acting talents from Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry, Gone Girl cannot be missed. This film contains a sequence of flashing lights which might affect customers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.

“MISS LIQUID SUNSHINE” Finalist in Britain’s Got Talent, International Star of the Concert Keyboard, “Miss Liquid Sunshine”, Jean Martyn, certainly lived up to her reputation when she entertained the ladies of The Chatelaine Luncheon Club with humour, and with the help of a huge keyboard, at their first meeting of the season. Jean told us about having a dream and never giving up on that dream and she took us on a journey to musical success, TV celebrity and royal appointments.
A MUSICAL BOX OF SURPRISES AND DELIGHTS by BARRY COLLETT
Recognised as a prodigy at the age of 9, at the time when she was playing her local church’s organ, she went on to gain two degrees for piano and organ for classical music from Trinity College and the Guildhall School of Music, after which she was tutored in jazz by the late Johnny Dankworth. Classical piano, electronic organ, Wurlitzer, church organs, jazz piano, big band, boogie, military marches, R&B, Dixie, Calypso, 60s beat, Easy Listening, West End musicals – she has done it all and it has led to performances all over Europe and America and in the presence of royalty here in the UK. “Miss Liquid Sunshine” was the apt title given to her by Simon Cowell when she shot to fame as a finalist in Britain’s Got Talent in 2011, chosen from 60,000 entrants and watched by 14 million viewers, and she is certainly very much in demand for her talents as well as her effervescent personality. The ladies of the Luncheon Club left Jean in no doubt about how much they enjoyed her talk and performance and left still singing and humming the music that had so entertained them. C The Club meets on the fourth Thursday of the month in The Belmont Hotel, Leicester, and is always happy to welcome new members For further details please contact Norma Grimes on 0116 2608412.

Saturday 22nd November 2014 10.30-16.30 The Old School Rooms, School St., Rothley The works of most great composers contain forgotten corners, unknown or overlooked pieces, or uncharacteristic works, many of which shed new and unexpected light on the composers’ reputation. The morning session will introduce many of these intriguing works. The afternoon will take the opposite course, and look at brilliant and exciting music written by composers too readily written off as second rate, one work composers, or even totally forgotten composers who deserve a better fate. Come and enjoy some unexpected and delicious musical surprises. Barry Collett was Director of Music at Rutland College, founded the Rutland Sinfonia in 1975, made 11 recordings both as conductor and pianist and is well-known for his recordings of lesserknown works by Elgar. Nicky visits Army Cadet Force in Barrow
Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan paid tribute to the Barrow upon Soar Detachment of the Army Cadet Force (ACF) when she paid them a visit at Humphrey Perkins School this week. The ACF is part of the UK’s oldest, and one of the largest and most successful voluntary youth organisation consisting of approximately 45,000 cadets based at over 1,700 local detachments and units across the country. The Barrow upon Soar Detachment forms part of the Leicestershire & Derbyshire Yeomanry (LDY) Squadron, Leicestershire Northamptonshire & Rutland Army Cadet Force (LNR ACF). They have been based at Humphrey Perkins, and have paraded over 80 cadets since they established themselves in January 2013. During the visit, Nicky was given the opportunity to inspect the cadets during a parade and view training sessions in first aid, rifle training, field craft and navigation. She also had the opportunity to speak with the cadets, as well as the detachment commander, Staff Sergeant Instructor Conan Soni. Following her visit, Nicky commented: “I was hugely impressed with the cadets here at Humphrey Perkins. As well as taking part in military based training, they also get the opportunity to further themselves in other areas such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award, the Cadet Vocational Qualification Organisation (CVQO) and BTEC qualifications in public services and music” “The opportunities for trying something new are absolutely huge. Today I have seen cadets rifle training and honing their navigation skills, but young people can also try skiing, climbing, mountain biking and many more” “It’s a great thing to be involved with, and I congratulate the volunteers who make it possible for young people to be involved with so many wonderful opportunities.” Staff Sergeant Conan Instructor Soni added: “The Army Cadet Force is a fantastic organisation for young people to do something different in their spare time. The number of opportunities available to our cadets are vast and the range of activities and qualifications we can provide will benefit them both socially and educationally whilst also providing them with key skills for life. There is something for everyone!” The Army Cadet Detachment runs every Wednesday evening from 6.30pm until 9pm in the Annex Building – the CTC (Cadet Training Centre) at the rear of the school. For more details in how to get involved, please ring: 01509 412385 (HPS), 0116 2643 919 (LNR ACF) or visit www.armycadets.com.
