JOIN THE FIGHT AGAINST HEART DISEASE IN LEICESTERSHIRE Live in Leicestershire? Have been affected by heart disease? Want to join the fight against heart disease? Not sure how ? Read on to find out more Around 107,000 people in Leicestershire are fighting their daily battles with heart and circulatory disease. Heart and circulatory disease kills nearly 2,300 people each year in Leicestershire – nearly a quarter of them before the age of 75. The nation’s heart charity is calling on people across Leicestershire to take heart and join the fight against heart disease by becoming part of their local fundraising group and raising vital funds for heart research. Carrie Seaton, BHF Fundraising Manager for Leicestershire and Northamptonshire, said: “Heart disease is heartless. Too many lives are lost each year, and we’re determined to do everything we can to protect more families from this devastation. “Our fundraising groups are the face of the BHF in their local communities. From running fundraising events through to supporting schools and local businesses, or organising collections, they are a fantastic way to support our vital work and help people locally. Any time that you can give will be invaluable, because every pound raised will help fund vital research and identify new treatments that could help save lives. BHF research has helped halve death rates from heart and circulatory disease over the past 50 years, but there is still a long way to go. Through the public’s generosity the BHF will fund half a billion pounds of new research by 2020.
We need your help to save the lives of people you love and care about.

Mountsorrel to Skegness 16th September 2017

Bob’s bike ride was created in memory of Robert Stevens who very sadly passed  away on 19th May 2017 after battling against Prostate Cancer. Bob worked at Mountsorrel Quarry for 38 years and was well known across the large site. Colleagues from the quarry, together with family and friends were bought together to pay tribute to Bob by cycling from Mountsorrel to Skegness covering approximately 85 miles. This was something Bob longed to do himself but unfortunately due to illness this was never achieved. It is no mean feat when it comes to cycling from Mountsorrel to Skegness! Particularly as most participants were complete novice cyclists, some not even owning a bike until the event was organised. The response from cyclists, sponsors, volunteers and people donating has been phenomenal. The target was to raise £3000 for LOROS but as it stands now this has been raised to £7,000! The amount received can be seen on Bob’s page: justgiving.com/rememberbob. The cycle ride brought together many new friendships and personal achievements. Cycling through rain spells and gusts of wind in the Linconshire area were certainly challenging at times! However, knowing that they were doing this for Bob and to raise as much money for LOROS pushed them through all adversities to reach the Clock Tower in Skegness. Medals were presented to cyclists and a silver keyring/bottle open presented to all support volunteers.

Self-access libraries set for roll-out
Birstall and District Art Society Annual Exhibition 2017
'Smart' libraries are set to expand across the county, after a successful trial
For the first time this year, our Exhibition will take place over two days, Saturday 4th November and Sunday 5th N o v e m b e r, rather than the three days of pre vious years. The Exhibition will be formally opened by Cllr Ann Marshall, Chair of Birstall Parish Council. She will also be presenting the 'Mary Houghton Rose Bowl' in the Abstract & Experimental category (Mary's favourite genre), which has been generously donated by the Parish Council in memory of the late Mary Houghton, who was a well known and highly respected Councillor and active member of the community. Exhibitions and Dates for Diaries 4th & 5th November – Birstall & District Art Society: Annual Exhibition at the Village Hall, Birstall Road, Leicester, LE4 4DH. Open 9.30am-5.00pm Sat & Sun. Free admission, wheelchair access, refreshments, free parking to the rear of the village hall. Visit: www.badas.co.uk
Self-access technology is due to roll out to 15 libraries across Leicestershire as part of wider plans to save £1.3million. People who’ve registered to take part would use their library card to access the buildings, in order to borrow, return and renew items or use the public computers, wifi and printing and copying facilities. The move could increase opening hours and follows a successful trial at Syston library. Self-access technology makes it more convenient for people who work during the day or on shifts, plus parents who want to take their children to the library on the way to school. During the four-month trial in Syston, opening hours increased by 30 hours a week and a number of people enquired about using the venue for community activities. “We have a good track record in delivering libraries differently. Despite the financial pressures, the roll-out enables us to extend the benefits seen in Syston to thousands of residents. Councillor Richard Blunt, cabinet member for communities and wellbeing ‘Smart’ library technology would be rolled out at 15 of the 16 market town libraries: Ashby, Blaby, Birstall, Broughton Astley, Coalville, Earl Shilton, Glenfield, Hinckley, Loughborough, Lutterworth, Melton, Oadby, Shepshed, Syston and Wigston Magna. This would save £230,000. The collections hub would house archives, museums collections and educational resources, replacing five current venues – a report would be brought back to cabinet in early 2018. The £1.3m savings are due to be made by 2020/21.

Kind-hearted individuals are being asked to step forward and become foster parents for vulnerable children and young people in Leicestershire. Leicestershire County Council is running two events next month to try and encourage people to open up their homes to children in need. The informal evenings, set to be held from 6.15pm to 8pm on Wednesday, 25 October, at County Hall in Glenfield, will provide prospective foster parents with an opportunity to meet and talk to carers, as well as the council's fostering team. Before embarking on the fostering journey, many prospective fosterers will no doubt have a number of questions. "So, at the event, our fostering team will be on hand to explain why fostering is a hugely rewarding role, as well as offer the support and information needed, no matter how far along people are in their journey. Ivan Ould, cabinet member for children and families Find out more about fostering with Leicestershire County Council by visiting www.fosteringleicestershire.com, calling 0116 305 0505 or emailing fosteringandadoption@leics.gov.uk

Thanks to Kia garage in Mountsorrel Our cat Bob went missing from our village in Mountsorrel on Wednesday 13th September. The Kia garage in Mountsorrel have been so helpful and calling and making contact every day. My husband couldnt sleep and we were devastated as we thought we wouldnt see him again, we put up missing posters everywhere and we were loosing hope! They called us on the Saturday to say Bob was stuck in the engine of one of their show room cars. We were so relieved they have been brilliant and I wanted to recognise their efforts and say a big thank you.

THE ROTHLEY HERITAGE TRUST PRESENTS A ONE DAY EVENT
Mountsorrel Poppy Appeal 2017 In the aftermath of the First World War people wanted to remember those who had given their lives for peace and freedom. The poppy, the only thing which grew following the devastation on the Western Front in Flanders and Picardy, was chosen as the emblem of remembrance and to coincide with the third anniversary of the Armistice on 11 November 1921 poppies were sold to raise money for the ex-Service community. Ninetysix years on and that tradition continues with the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The Appeal benefits service people and their families from all the campaigns from the 1st World War to today – remember there has only been two years since the end of 2nd World War when a British Service person has not been killed on active duty somewhere across the world. The long term legacy of support that is needed for our service personnel and their families as a result of operations in Afghanistan alone is stark. There, between 2003 and 2015, we suffered 454 dead and several thousand wounded in action. The Royal British Legion, with your support, and in co-operation with partner charities including Help for Heroes and individual Service and Regimental charities is leading the way in delivering that support. Nationally the Poppy Appeal raised over £44 million last year but we spend at least £1.7 million every week of the year on our longstanding welfare support initiatives which include: • Running our Care Homes and Break Centres
“CAMILLE SAINT-SAENS” HIS LIFE AND MUSIC BY BARRY COLLETT
SATURDAY OCTOBER 28th 2017 10.30-16.30 THE OLD SCHOOL ROOMS, SCHOOL ST., ROTHLEY The French composer Saint-Saёns (1835-1921) was not only one of the leading composers of the day, but he was a brilliant pianist, organist, orchestrator, editor of early French composers and critic and philosopher as well. He also excelled at much else-he was a published poet and playwright, astronomer, scientist, botanist and a world traveller much concerned with ‘green’ issues. Unfortunately, this glittering career masked an unhappy personal life which made him, in later life, a reclusive and bitter man. But his music is wonderful and today we will examine his prolific output in almost every form of music. COURSE FEE £8 (includes morning and afternoon refreshments) EARLY ENROLMENT BY POST ESSENTIAL Cheques payable to The Rothley Heritage Trust and sent to Brenda Sutherland, 4 North St., Rothley, Leicester LE7 7NN. Please include name(s), address, ‘phone number and e-mail (if applicable) so that details of the day can be sent to you. Further information from Marion Vincent 0116 2375156 vincent.mbe82@yahoo.co.uk or Brenda Sutherland 0116 2302766 - The Rothley Heritage Trust is a Registered Charity No. 1145397

This year’s Appeal will be launched with a talk entitled “The Battle of Mount Sorrel 1916” to be given on the afternoon of 28th October at St Peter’s church, Market Place. Entry to the talk is free of charge but donations to the Appeal will be appreciated and Poppies will be available as they will from locations across the village from the same day. Christmas craft fair will raise vital funds for local charity On Sunday 12 November 2017, local charity the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust will be holding their annual JHMT Christmas craft fair. The event, at the Rawlins Academy in Quorn, will run from 11.00am-4.30pm and will be a chance for Christmas shoppers to choose from a range of unique gifts made with skill, love and care by talented local artisans. We will have a wide range of beautiful items for sale such as jewellery, shabby chic furniture, home wares and accessories, paintings and artwork, glassware, candles, cards and even children’s books written by a local author. Angie Humphries from the Trust said: “The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust was formed out of the tragic loss of our amazing son Joe, a fun-loving, Rothley lad who was a talented artist. “After the success of last year’s craft fair, the demand for stalls has been so huge that we’ve had to move to a bigger venue. We are delighted so many talented local crafters and producers are so keen to showcase their talents in aid of Joe’s Trust ( JHMT). “The chasm which was left by Joe’s tragically sudden death can never be filled, but Joe’s legacy is the fabulous work of the Trust created in his name. “Thanks to the amazing work of Joe’s army of helpers and volunteers, we have achieved so much in a short time. But there’s still so much to do, and by coming along to our Christmas craft fair, you too can help us a little further along our journey.” The craft fair is free to attend and everyone is welcome. All proceeds will go to the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust. For more information on the work of the Trust, visit www.jhmt.org.uk

Seasonal Issues - Latest News From Hedgehogs and minibeasts: Why not try to have a go at making a hide for a hibernating hedgehog too?! Gardeners tend to tidy their gardens in the autumn but please don’t be too tidy as hedgehogs and the minibeasts they feed on like longer grass and places under hedges.
Well we are heading into autumn and now is the time to think of the animals and wildlife that share our world as they start to increase their reserves to ensure that they survive the winter months. With a little time and effort we could all make a difference to the wildlife that might visit our gardens at this time of year.
Don’t forget to store all materials for burning away from the bonfire site and then move the material to make a safe bonfire a small distance away.
Feeding the birds: Why not make or buy a variety of foods to help the wild birds to survive the autumn and winter months? Bird cakes are quick to make and there is the added advantage of you being able to clear out your cupboards.
Moving the materials will ensure that hedgehogs, frogs, toads, newts and a myriad of minibeasts are not killed when the bonfire is lit.
Lard is the best fat to use for this (as a vegetarian I don’t tend to buy this except Fireworks: Talking of bonfires leads to the for bird cake making but we’ve tried the subject of fireworks. the flashes. Leave a TV or radio on if you are going out. Remember, don’t overwhelm your pet - as hard as it may sound, ignore their behaviour and be as normal as you can – don’t feed their fear by cuddling them tightly, or feeding them rich food treats as they have not eaten their tea. Do give them space and a chance to hide. Now is also the time to check that dog coats still fit and are in a good state of repair. Why not also check the batteries on any of the lights on collars to make sure they don’t let you down when you need them most! Check hutches and other housing to ensure that they are draught free and watertight – It won’t be long before the dark nights and the weather turns autumn into winter and our pets and wildlife deserve to be considered.

Classic Car Run for Rainbow’s Hospice This was the third year for this run which is becoming ever more popular with classic car owners. Thirty six drivers from all the surrounding counties and Leicestershire came, some travelling considerable distances before tackling the actual run which covered about 79 miles! The ages of the cars ranged from the 1920s to modern day classics. This year the route went from The Gate Hangs Well, Syston along country lanes through the Charnwood Forest eventually arriving in Derbyshire at the Barton Turns Marina for a comfort stop and refreshments for those who fancied a bacon butty or even full English breakfast! Then it was on to Calke Abbey, once again along minor roads some with spectacular views, including Breedon Church and, in one place, a tepee. A special area was set aside for the cars to enable other visitors to enjoy the sight. Sadly, there was no sunshine but, thankfully, there was only a small amount of rain towards the end.
Parents with children due to start at secondary schools in Leicestershire next year are being encouraged to apply for places at their preferred schools by Tuesday, 31 October. They are being signposted to the county council's website at https://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/admissions to find out more and to start the process. “Last year, 97 per cent of Leicestershire parents submitted an online application and we encourage people to use this approach. We also want to remind parents that there is no automatic entry to any school so it is very important for applications to be submitted before the closing date of 31 October” Councillor Trevor Pendleton, county council support member for children and families To further support parents in reviewing schools and making their shortlist, a new interactive ‘Your Guide’ to education has also been launched - again available on the schools admissions page of the website - to help them focus their search and make the right decision. Schools also hold open evenings for parents to view their facilities and speak to teachers. These can be useful in helping parents to determine the best school for their child. Parents should contact a school directly to find out more information about the evenings.
We would like to thank the proprietor of The Gate Hangs Well for allowing us to use his car park and facilities, Howard Midgely for photographing all the cars as they left the car park and of course all the participants who helped us raise a record amount of £765 for the Rainbow’s Hospice.
