Renata performed for us last November at the inauguration of our new piano at Markfield Methodist Church. The recital was an evening few of us will forget. Renata was a student of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and thrilled the full house with her programme of Chopin and Liszt, producing a spontaneous standing ovation at the end. Quite simply, Renata was breath-taking, with a staggering technique and depth of musical maturity. Added to that was her lovely, gentle manner. Cabaret show will raise funds for The White Horse Wishing Well based in Quorn On Saturday 10 November the #HappyDayCabaret, an evening of music and dance from local amateur and professional performers, will be held to raise money for The White Horse Wishing Well based in Quorn. This local organisation helps people and projects in the Charnwood area if they are going through a tough time, by arranging different experiences for them. This can be from a day out, a family holiday or help with a home improvement project. Amanda Westell, who lives in Mountsorrel and is involved in organising the show, directly benefitted from the TWHWW with a family trip to Disneyland Paris this year. Amanda said “It’s such a wonderful gift that has given us memories to share and I wanted to do something to ensure they can continue to help others.â€? So far, performers include: The Tap Chaps, Greg and Harrison Gent, Leicester Vocal Tech Academy, James Green, The Quirkz, Courtney King and Jessica Michelle School of Dance - who are all giving up their own time to support the show. There will also be a raffle for ‘Together Against Cancer’, another local charity that has supported Amanda over the past few months. Doors open to the #HappyDayCabaret at 6.45pm at The Palmer Tomkinson Centre, Birstall – tickets are ÂŁ15 for adults and ÂŁ12.50 for children (3-11 years). For more information and bookings please email happydaycabaret@outlook.com. Updates on performers are on our Facebook page @happydaycabaret.

Mountsorrel, Christmas Tree Festival

Apply now for 2019 secondary school places

Visitors donations will support - Sorrel Youth Cafe.

LEICESTERSHIRE parents and carers with children due to start at secondary school next year are being encouraged to apply for places at their preferred schools before October 31.

Sorrel Youth CafÊ is a community charity project that offers reasonably priced food and refreshments in a safe space. However, it’s a lot more than a cafÊ, offering a social meeting place for the lonely and isolated; a social education environment for young people and adults with special educational needs, a training ground for young people and a hub for community engagement and development.

They will also find an interactive ‘Your Guide to education’ online to help focus their search and shortlist up to three preferred schools. Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and families, said: “Last year 96% of Leicestershire parents submitted their application online and we encourage people to use this approach. “We also want to remind parents to maximise their opportunities by applying for three schools, including their catchment school. There is no automatic entry for any school, so it is very important for applications to be submitted before the closing date. Open evenings held at schools, for parents and carers to view facilities and speak to the teachers, can be useful in helping determine which school is best for their child. Schools should be contacted directly, from the start of term and before the closing date, to find out more. Parents unable to apply online may download a form from the website (www.leicestershire.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools-collegesandacademies/school-admissions), fill it in and post it by the closing date. Alternatively they may call the Customer Service and request a form to be sent out.

Christmas craft fair will raise vital funds for local heart charity On Sunday 4 November, local heart charity, *the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT) will be holding their annual Christmas craft fair. Now in its 3rd year, the event will be held at the new Mountsorrel Memorial Centre, and will be open from 10.30-4.30pm. The JHMT Christmas Fair will be a chance for Christmas shoppers to choose from a range beautiful gifts from a range of uniquely crafted items made with skill, love and care by talented local artisans. Items will include jewellery, shabby chic furniture, home interiors and accessories, paintings and artwork, glassware, candles, cards, craft gins, local fine wines and delicatessen goods all with the emphasis on quality products which are not available on the high street. Angie Humphries from the Trust said: “The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust was formed out of the tragic loss of my amazing son Joe who collapsed and died aged just 14 after a run with one of his best friends. “Joe was a victim of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS), a heart condition which causes sudden, unexpected death in young people and can often go undiagnosed. The void which was left by Joe’s tragically sudden death can never be filled, but Joe’s legacy is the fabulous work of the Trust created in his name (www.jhmt.org.uk) “By coming along to our Christmas craft fair, you can buy unique eclectic and beautiful gifts, have a piece of homemade cake with a cuppa and help to save young lives in the process.” The craft fair is free to attend – although a discretionary donation on entry would be very much appreciated. All proceeds will go to the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust.

For more information on the work of the Trust, visit www.jhmt.org.uk 8

INVESTING IN FESTIVE CELEBRATIONS Loughborough will be shining brightly at Christmas thanks to new £100,000 festive lights being installed by Charnwood Borough Council.

The new decorations are part of the Council’s continued investment in the town centre and events to attract people to Loughborough and make it a great place to visit. Around 35 new light installations will be unveiled at the big Christmas lights switch-on event on Sunday, November 25. Cllr Jenny Bokor, lead member for Loughborough, said: “I can’t wait until the new lights are up and casting their festive warmth over the town centre. “Every year thousands of people pack Market Place to see the lights being switched on and I am sure they will appreciate our new collection. “While Christmas for many is about family time and fun, it is also a crucial time for our town centres and the businesses in them. “That’s why it’s important we continue to invest in the town centre and help create an inviting place that people want to spend time in, for both the retail and leisure experience.” The Council has appointed Lancashire-based LITE Ltd to provide its new festive lights. The new lights will include: • Two four-metre high giant bells weighing 100kg each in Market Place • Projectors which will cast images on to the front of Loughborough Town Hall • A 60-metre light curtain to hang above Church Gate • Three four-meter high 3D chandeliers in Bedford Square • New lighting will be placed in Market Street, Market Place, Cattle Market, Town Hall, Devonshire Square, Wards End, Bedford Square, Town Hall passage, Biggin Street, Church Gate andWarners Lane The LED lights will be on display from November 25 until January 7, shining brightly for a total of 567 hours. Savvy Savers Gearing up for a Bonus as LISA Arrives in Rothley, Shepshed Loughborough and Syston The much talked-about Lifetime ISA (LISA) savings account is now available for Loughborough, Rothley, Shepshed and Syston savers aged 18 to 39 looking to buy their first home or planning for retirement as The Nottingham launches exclusively in branches.

“Our society was built on the founding principle of helping people put a roof over their head and we understand the many challenges facing first-time buyers saving a deposit in a competitive and crowded housing market.

Dan Spendlow, Cluster Manager of The Nottingham’s branches in Loughborough, Rothley, Shepshed and Syston, commented:

With a 25%, tax-free cash bonus available for savers every year, it’s no surprise there have been over 170,000 Lifetime ISA accounts opened since it was launched by the government in 2017. The Nottingham is now one of just two providers to offer the cash LISA, and the only one that allows customers to open the account face-to-face. The account was created for those aged 18 to 39, who are either saving for their first home or retirement and later life (post-60). Account holders are able to save up to £4,000 tax-free every year, with a 25% state bonus being paid annually until the account holder turns 50.

The society recently became the first in the UK to offer the government-backed savings account in-branch. Thanks to savers receiving bonuses of up to ÂŁ1,000 a year the account has hit national headlines, however only those aged 18-39 can take advantage as it can be used for first homes or retirement only. It comes as new research from The Nottingham1 highlights that one in three (32%) people saving to buy their first home in the next five years have not heard of helpful accounts such as the Lifetime ISA, meaning they are potentially missing out on thousands in bonuses. Savers aged 18 to 24 are the least likely to know about the financial benefits of schemes including LISA and Help-to-buy ISAs that are available, with 44% admitting they were not aware.

comparison at our branches to find our members the right mortgage for them. This service will be free to Lifetime ISA savers* and further demonstrates our focus on helping home buyers looking at the prospect of their first mortgage.

As the account also rewards those saving for retirement, it fits with the society’s focus to build long-term relationships and reward savers who do the right thing to plan for and protect their financial future.

“Saving into a Lifetime ISA will either help first-time buyers save their deposit quicker, or put down a larger deposit. We are further supporting first-time buyers in the region by offering whole of market mortgage

Dan continued: “The Nottingham has a responsibility to help our members save and plan for their long term future, and as we are all living longer in retirement, a Lifetime ISA is another simple way that our members can boost their retirement savings. We’ve had lots of customers asking about the LISA so are looking forward to helping customers boost their savings and benefit from this fantastic opportunity.

Welcome to the Jungle They say never work with children or animals, so what have Charnwood Scouts done? They have taken 130 Cub Scouts to Paradise Wildlife Park in Broxbourn for a sleep over. The young people from across Charnwood, including Anstey and Woodhouse, travelled down the motorway to the wildlife park. It was wet but everyone was full of excitement as they arrived for their exclusive VIP tour. During the tour the Cubs got to see the penguins, camels and a range of reptiles. After the tour they got to meet some more animals up close including a snake and a bearded dragon. The young people had the opportunity to talk to the rangers and learn more about these animals. Dylan, 9, asked “What colour does it [the bearded dragons beard] change into? Which gave a fascinating answer from ranger Hannah “When they are angry the beard goes black as a warning to keep away, but when the male finds a girlfriend it turns orange and he dances. Later on in the evening the Cubs gathered in the huge marquee and had a film night watching The Jungle Book and The Greatest Showman. As dawn broke they awoke with great excitement for the upcoming day of exploration. We asked Alfie, 8, which animal he was looking forward to seeing most. “The Lions sleeping on the rocks. The day started wet but soon the sun came out and with it all the animals. Each group explored the park and saw the rest of the animals including the white lion, tigers and jaguars. Some of the Cubs even got to see the penguin feed and talk which Isaac, 10, thought was “amazing! “I loved seeing the penguins all running and swimming, it was epic.

Q: Why are ghosts so bad at lying? A: Because you can see right through them! Q: When is it bad luck to be followed by a black cat? A: When you’re a mouse. Thank goodness for Halloween, all of a sudden, cobwebs in my house are decorations!

Rothley Vineyard Quadruples Grape Harvest with a Bumper Crop due to Sunshine Summer

HIGHCLIFFE AMATEUR THEATRICAL SOCIETY (HATS) PANTOMIME 2018/19.

Vintner was dashing around county shops buying up homebrew carboys

“Babes in the Wood” by Paul Reakes, presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd. January 10th, 11th, and 12th 2019. Well, here we are again. “Oh yes we are”. As you can see from the dates, owing to circumstances beyond our control we have had to rearrange our usual dates of performing to you in November. This is due to our recent move to the Birstall Social Club, who had a prearranged booking that coincided with our usual dates. Of course the Social Club are honouring their booking, a clear indicator of their professionalism, this is a sure sign of what we know will be a good working relationship with HATS.

Last year the Rothley Vineyard’s harvest resulted in 3 tonnes of grapes being picked resulting in 2,400 bottles of wine. This year the 1,000 mature grapevines produced a staggering 12 tonnes which should result in about 9,000 bottles. Put simply the production has quadrupled, which is mainly attributed to the good weather since the spring giving ideal vine growing conditions. Vineyard proprietor, Liz Robson, said “We started harvesting the Siegerrebe grapes 17 days early, and needed to conduct three selective picking on that rather temperamental vine alone. When I realised how much juice was being produced I ordered two additional small tanks in time for the rest of the harvest. Thank goodness I did, because as we harvested Solaris, Madeleine, and Fruhburgunder we used every tank we had and had to get plastic carboys out of the attic. Still not enough so we were dashing out to the homebrew counters of main shops. We started harvesting the red wine grapes of Rondo and Regent two weeks ago and finished on Monday. Once again, the wine tank capacity was critical so a medium sized tank is now on its way from Italy. Main question is where to put it? The boutique winery is so full that we are doing the first stage fermentation of the Rondo grapes outside (red wine is fermented using whole grapes and their skins, then this is “pressed” after a week and the fermentation continues taking a few more weeks) Thank goodness our Orion grapes went off to Halfpenny Green Vineyard to be made into sparkling wine, otherwise I would have had a serious space problem! I would like to pay tribute to my marvellous band of volunteers who kept coming back again and again to harvest grapes as I had to put on more picking dates. Towards the end of harvest one of the volunteers wives, Dora Henderson, came to my aid in the kitchen and cooked lovely soups and chilli dishes. Grape picking is a very physical activity and it is important to feed the volunteers well.” Weather conditions have been near perfect. Firstly, the warm spring produced a lot of young shoots, and we were mercifully spared a May frost. Then the wet May allowed good root growth and water uptake by the vines, and then the wonderful period of sunshine allowed the grapes to develop amid a hearty canopy of leaves. The wine estate is small, but determined to succeed in producing fine quality wines with a distinctive Leicestershire identity. Seven wines are sold under the company name of Rothley Wine Ltd and can also be purchased from local retailers, wine bars, hotels and at Ragdale Hall. Their flagship wine King Richard recently won a silver medal. See website www.rothleywine.com

Babes in the Wood, how exciting is this promising to be. There will be the Babes of course, they can be a little mischievous at times, but that just adds to their charming personalities, but they can also be vulnerable. They do have a nurse, but she is no-one like you have ever seen before. The story involves the nasty Sheriff of Nottingham, once again trying to create bad feeling amongst the townsfolk, cheating them out of their money, and making them feel worthless. In addition he has his eyes set on Maid Marion as his future wife. Is he her knight in shining armour, or is there someone else waiting to capture her heart? If you shout loud enough and often enough, you might be able to assist in changing things and overturn the Sheriff. If you want to find out what happens, then make sure you book your tickets and come and see our fine cast, in their fine costumes, at our fabulous new Panto venue, Birstall Social Club.
