THE ROTHLEY HERITAGE TRUST PRESENTS A ONE DAY EVENT

The Inner Wheel Club of the Soar Valley The Inner Wheel Club of the Soar Valley saw its first Charity event of their year 2017-18 with a small open garden on Sunday, August 13th hosted by President Doreen Lilley in aid of “Dementia UK raising funds for Leicestershire’s first Admiral Nurse.

“CAMILLE SAINT-SAENS HIS LIFE AND MUSIC BY BARRY COLLETT

SATURDAY OCTOBER 28th 2017 10.30-16.30 THE OLD SCHOOL ROOMS, SCHOOL ST., ROTHLEY The French composer Saint-SaŃ‘ns (1835-1921) was not only one of the leading composers of the day, but he was a brilliant pianist, organist, orchestrator, editor of early French composers and critic and philosopher as well. He also excelled at much else-he was a published poet and playwright, astronomer, scientist, botanist and a world traveller much concerned with ‘green’ issues. Unfortunately, this glittering career masked an unhappy personal life which made him, in later life, a reclusive and bitter man. But his music is wonderful and today we will examine his prolific output in almost every form of music.

Despite the worries of the previous weeks of unsettled weather the day dawned bright and clear and everyone who attended was able to enjoy the day, with the magnificent amount of ÂŁ384 being raised for the charity.

COURSE FEE ÂŁ8 (includes morning and afternoon refreshments) EARLY ENROLMENT BY POST ESSENTIAL Cheques payable to The Rothley Heritage Trust and sent to Brenda Sutherland, 4 North St., Rothley, Leicester LE7 7NN. Please include name(s), address, ‘phone number and e-mail (if applicable) so that details of the day can be sent to you.

The success of the event was helped by kind donations from Waitrose, Mountsorrel Branch, Rothley fisheries and Od’thorpes CafÊ in Quorn and of course a big thank you to all who attended.

Cricket club leading the way in being heartsafe thanks to training from local charity A LOCAL cricket club has taken part in CPR and defibrillator training to make sure as many of its members as possible know what it means to be heartsafe.

We all need to be prepared.”

including supplying a £600 grant for the defibrillator box, so that it’s accessible to the local community 24/7. “I was delighted to deliver the free, hands-on CPR and defibrillator familiarisation training as part of the heart awareness In Cricket programme. Providing this sort of advice, expertise and support is exactly what the JHMT is all about.” The JHMT offers free training to sports clubs across the city and county, in an effort to ensure that as many people as possible know how to save a life if an emergency occurs.

Rothley Park Cricket Club, one of the leading advocates of the Leicestershire Heart Awareness in Cricket programme, invited specialist volunteers from local charity the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT) to come and deliver the training to players and club staff.

It also works to promote awareness of sudden heart deaths, after the death from sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) of Rothley lad Joe Humphries, in 2012, aged just 14.

Steve Thomason from the club added: “We’ve had a defibrillator available for more than a year now, and we are proud to be ambassadors for Heart Awareness in Cricket, which is encouraging other Leicestershire cricket clubs to get defibrillators and learn how they could help to prevent sudden heart deaths.

Heart Awareness in Cricket is a collaboration between Leicestershire County Cricket Club, JHMT and Heartwize, and aims to provide all Leicestershire Everards Premier League clubs with dedicated support, advice and guidance so that they can access funding to secure a defibrillator, external cabinet and training to help prevent sudden heart deaths. Those learning the vital life-saving skills included former England, Leicestershire and Lancashire county cricketer Philip DeFreitas, who is head coach for the Rothley club. Philip said: “It’s really important that all players have the knowledge and understanding to provide CPR to other team members should it be required – even though hopefully, it won’t be needed. “All players, whatever their age, should know the drill – that you contact the emergency services, use a defib and commence CPR.

“Over the winter, we’ve had a new pavilion built, so we now have the defibrillator located on the outside of this. The extra space provided by our new facilities also gave us the ideal chance to do some training. We hope to have even more training on offer for coaches and other players later in the year.” The thriving club – which has more than 100 youngsters in its junior section – has strong links with the JHMT, as the charity is based in the same village. Over the past few years, the cricket club has raised money for the JHMT through its annual Party in the Park community fund-raising event. This year’s Party in the Park takes place at the club on Sunday 27 August, from noon, with free admission. JHMT medical lead and former intensive care consultant Dr Mike Ferguson, who delivered the training, said: “JHMT has been working closely with Rothley Park Cricket Club to help them set up their public access defibrillator,

REVIVAL 2017 The Mountsorrel REVIVAL confirmed as an outstanding success in its 4th successive year. Even the sun came out to play.

The sun began to shine through the clouds as the residents of Mountsorrel opened the curtains to the forth REVIVAL ‘Old Style Village Fete’. By 7.30 the village was buzzing with volunteers putting up bunting, erecting signage and marking out pitches for the over 90 stalls, food outlets, activities and attractions. By 9.30 the village Green was energized with stallholders registering and being directed to one of the many areas situated throughout the village. With attractions being located more centrally this year, visitors could reach every part of the event more easily. The formal opening of the day was marked by a traditional street parade at 12 noon. With the main road closed and led by a fun run, the Parade brought back memories of the old Mountsorrel Gala for some onlookers. Pat Neal of the Mountsorrel Heritage Group told us: The sight of a parade coming up the village led by a band brought back memories of the 1970's/1980's. It gets better every year. Well

done all of you and thanks again

Mixing the traditional with the modern, the Parade set the atmosphere with music from the Syston Scouts and Guides Band and the excitement of the crowd, all accompanied by the bells of the Morris Dancers, the twirling of hoops and the sound old agricultural and steam driven vehicles. Bringing us up to date we had a special appearance from Pepper Pig and SpongeBob SquarePants. The variety of stalls, activities and attractions increased for 2017, ensuring that there was something for everyone, not matter their age, interest or ability to move around. The Chair of Mountsorrel Community Team (MCT) Debbie MacRae told us: Of course we included all the old favourites such as the SoapBox racing, have-a-goarchery and the street parade, but we wanted to provide much more this year. We want every Mountsorrel resident and REVIVAL visitor to feel welcome and included. One of the new additions this year was the introduction of the TARMAC Stage situated at the old Buttermarket. Again the traditional and the modern came together to offer a full programme of music and singing. Alongside

the Rothley Gospel Choir and the Mountsorrel Ukuleles, young people and members of the public took to the microphone to sing and play their favourites. On the Memorial playing fields, Castle Park and the village Green, stalls and attractions selling quality products and food, catered for all tastes and interests. Many local businesses, including cafes, the Working Men’s Club and local shops and services, entered into the community spirit REVIVAL aims to promote. As in previous years the Soapbox Race attracted big crowds, but this year REVIVAL was celebrating something special. The MCT were proud to welcome the winners of the London 2017 Red Bull Soapbox Race. The team not only displayed the winning Soapbox, but also managed the day’s races. As the day came to a close and the contented visitors made their way home, the team of weary volunteers set about packing up and a village clean up. Feeling satisfied with a job well done and still immersed in the warm village welcome given to an estimated 3000 people, the team were pleased to find that most people had used the bins provided or taken their rubbish home. With live music, attractions, entertainment and a variety of places to eat and rest, REVIVAL 2017 was truly a fun day out for all the family.

The Quarry Team, TARMAC (a CRH Company), is fundraising for LOROS

The year the MCT has received some incredible support from its team of volunteers and local sponsors. Special thanks needs to be given to all those who worked hard to make REVIVAL 17 a fantastic success and to TARMAC, MOSS Solicitors, Signature Care Homes and The Rothley & Soar Valley Lions for the sponsorship.

Bob’s Bike Ride is an event created in memory of Robert Stevens, formerly a colleague of Tarmac. Bob sadly passed away in May 2017 after a battle against Prostate Cancer.

The MCT are already planning the 2018 REVIVAL, if you wish to take part or can spare some time as a volunteer with the MCT, please visit the website: the-mct.co.uk for more information.

Bob worked at the Mountsorrel Quarry for 38 years of his life so he was well known across the large site. Colleagues, family and friends have decided to come together and pay tribute to Bob by cycling from Mountsorrel Quarry to Skegness covering approximately 91 miles. The money raised will go to LOROS, the Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice who gave Bob quality and compassionate care.

GOT AN ARTICLE TO SEND US?

Bob wanted to take part in a charity bike ride to Skegness some years ago, prior to becoming ill. Sadly the event was never organised, so when his colleagues at work talked about doing something special to remember him, it seemed that organising such an event on Saturday, 16th September would have met with his approval. As a nice gesture, Bob’s bike will be ridden on the day by his very proud daughter’s boyfriend, Lewis Morton.

We are always on the lookout for local news. Please send articles to: yourlocal@ openboxpromotions.co.uk

This is going to be a real challenge as most of the participants are complete novice cyclists, some not even owning a bike until this event was organised. There will be approximately 40 cyclists taking part as well as support team members volunteering to help. Your support in raising money for LOROS would be very much appreciated. You can donate via this particular event by going to: www.justgiving.com/rememberbob

Coping with Cancer: Time Out

Rolls-Royce Retired Employees Association

So what is Time Out? - In some respects, Time Out can be whatever you wish it to be - it is a chance to talk to those who understand completely, a place to seek advice and reassurance and to share experiences with others in a really relaxing environment.

Rolls-Royce Retired Employees Association is rapidly coming to the end of another very successful year of events and trips. The foreign trip this year is to Croatia with visits to Omis, Krka National Park,Mostar and Dubrovnick.

And then there are the therapies. As well as the emotional support given, complementary therapies are offered to relieve stress and discomfort and encourage a feeling of well being. Kirstie, a qualified nurse, advises “we work with a person as a whole, it is a very holistic approach; complementary therapies can simply make you feel better. Coping with Cancer offers Aromatherapy, Reiki, Reflexology, Indian Head Massage and Swedish massage. Anyone up for aromatherapy? Delicate aromas drift in the atmosphere and gentle music surrounds. Perhaps a massage would be nice? There are lots of choices. Time Out for Anita - Anita already knew of C-W-C through sharing her aunt’s experiences when she herself succumbed to a seemingly never-ending series misfortunes, some of them life threatening. An exceptionally brave and inspiring lady, Anita risked her own life to save that of her unborn baby but her many troubles were only just beginning to mount up. Fortunately C-W-C was there to help her through. Time Out gave comfort, help and understanding.

Time Out for Marilyn - Double tragedy struck when terminal cancer struck Marilyn’s daughter and then her husband not long afterwards. Distraught and feeling alone, C-W-C was recommended to her by another cancer care organisation (and also by the NHS). Counselling was offered and Time Out was then suggested. Welcoming and supportive through both illnesses, lasting friendships developed at Time Out. Marilyn still visits Time Out eight years later and appreciates the opportunities to share her experiences with others. For Marilyn, Time Out is a place for comfort and reassurance, a chance to chat and a chance to listen. “Sometimes we simply swap our favourite recipes; there aren’t any rules she says “I don’t think there’s anywhere else like this If you would like to visit a Time Out session close to where you live, simply visit our website for the address and details of our timetable. Visit www.c-w-c.org.uk or call 0116 223 0055

Latest News From Animals Are Amazing!

We are all aware of a dog’s keen sense of smell which is thousands of times more sensitive than a human’s.

I share my home with three cats. Not only does each one look different, they also have different likes and dislikes. Each one has a favourite place to sleep. Two of them prefer the outdoors. One is very affectionate, another dislikes being picked up. One is outgoing and sociable, another is nervous. They like different food and each has his or her unique personality. However I know for certain that if I accidentally tread on a paw or tail the response will be the same. They yelp and run away and hide because they have been hurt and it is painful.

The heaviest weight lifted unaided by a human is 460kg. A gorilla can lift 2,000kg (as heavy as 30 humans). But the record has to go to the dung beetle which can pull 1,141 times its own body weight. This is equal to an average person pulling six double deck buses full of people!

For many years people believed that animals couldn’t feel pain. They thought that animals were not conscious and therefore were unaware of anything that happened or was done to them. If animals yelped in pain people thought it was a mechanical reaction, like a clock striking at certain times. People thought that all animals were dumb or stupid and had no physical or emotional feelings.

The examples of animal skills I have given are physical and can be measured. Animal sentience however can’t be measured but can be observed. There are hundreds of true stories that illustrate this which will be the topic of another article.

However in the last forty years interest in animal behaviour increased and with the help of modern technology scientists have made many discoveries. Not only are animals capable of skills thought to be unique to humans, but they also experience physical pain and pleasure and a wide range of feelings such as happiness, sadness, boredom, distress and excitement. Such feelings are called sentience and this means that animals are conscious and are aware of their surroundings and what happens to them. What they experience matters to them as much as our experiences matter to us.

A quotation attributed to Albert Einstein seems appropriate, “Every body LV D JHQLXV %XW LI \RX MXGJH D Ć“VK E\ LWV DELOLW\ WR FOLPE D WUHH LW ZLOO OLYH LWV OLIH EHOLHYLQJ LW LV VWXSLGĹ?

Humans have a massive effect on the lives of billions of animals. Our superiority has resulted in ignoring their individuality, their feelings and their needs. Increasing our knowledge of animals is crucial in improving their lives. They are not stupid, unfeeling mechanical objects, here only for our use and exploitation. They all deserve our compassion, respect and understanding. Elizabeth Allison RSPCA Woodside vice- president

A landmark discovery about animal behaviour was their ability to use WRROV D VNLOO SUHYLRXVO\ WKRXJKW WR EH XQLTXHO\ KXPDQ 7KH\ FDQ Ć“QG objects to enable them to carry out tasks and modify objects to make them more useful. Tool use has been observed in many animals including chimps, orang-utans, dolphins, elephants, otters, crows, rooks parrots and octopuses. Other abilities previously thought to be uniquely human include planning ahead, learning by watching others, having a sense of right and wrong and looking after each other. Some animals play tricks on one another and have a sense of fun.

GALA CONCERT

Animals communicate with one another, not necessarily by sounds but also by touch, smell and body language. What we now know means that the difference between animals and humans is not as great as previously thought. It is unlikely there will ever be the equivalent of a Leonardo da Vinci, Beethoven or Shakespeare in the non human animal kingdom. YOU LOVE your smartphone. Of course you do. But is it harming your relationship with your children? Research has found that children behave worse when parents spend too much time on their smartphones. Children who are trying to interact with their parents, only to be suddenly ‘dropped’ without warning, while the parent engages instead with the smartphone, show their frustration in a variety of unsophisticated ways. They may whine, sulk, have tantrums or show signs of hyperactivity or restlessness. A child behaviour expert at the University of Michigan advises: ‘Setting boundaries can help parents keep smartphones and other mobile technology from interrupting quality time. We know that parents’ responsiveness to their kids changes when they are using mobile technology, and that their device use may be associated with less than ideal interactions with their children.” But she added that it is indeed difficult for parents to cope with both “important and attention-grabbing information” coming in via the devices, and at the same time with social and emotional information coming in from their children – and to process both effectively.

25,000 reminders to be sent out over electoral register Charnwood Borough Council will be delivering around 25,000 reminder forms to properties which have not responded to the annual check of voter details. Every year the Council must check its electoral register is up to date and letters are sent to all households asking people to confirm the details or inform the Council of any changes. So far, 47,000 people have responded to the letters, called household enquiry forms. Geoff Parker, the Council’s Electoral Registration Officer, said: “Firstly I’d like to thank everyone who has already responded. “For those who receive a reminder form, please ensure you reply to us either to confirm that the details are correct, or to let us know about changes such as people who have moved away or new people who need to be added to the voters register. “Responses can be made by phone, online or by post using the pre-paid envelope provided. “Details of 16 and 17-year-olds can also be added now so that they can vote as soon as they turn 18. “It is a legal requirement to respond, and dealing with the form promptly will avoid us having to visit your property and door-knock to get the required details.” The Electoral Registration Officer needs the information to be able to publish a complete and accurate Electoral Register on December 1 each year. Having your details on the Electoral Register will: • Allow you to be able to vote • Improve your credit rating • Make it easier to access council services

She will also be presenting the 'Mary Houghton Rose Bowl' in the Abstract & Experimental category (Mary's favourite genre), which has been generously donated by the Parish Council in memory of the late Mary Houghton, who was a well known and highly respected Councillor and active member of the community. There should be a will, and there is a way! For some years now, local charity Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland has campaigned to reduce the 7 out of 10 people who die without a will. To that end this year, more than twenty offices of local Solicitors have generously agreed to reduce their Will Writing charges for older people to only £35 + VAT for a single uncomplicated Will. Whilst this is a huge reduction of around £100 with no strings attached, in earlier years some people have chosen to recognise needy local older people by leaving a greatly appreciated legacy to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland or making a donation, where the need is great especially in these difficult times. There is just a week to go before this year’s offer is available from 1st September until 31st October. Hundreds of people took advantage of this superb, low - cost deal last year in what proved to be a very successful initiative by the charity. Details are available from 0116 2992233 or www.ageuk.org.uk/leics Commenting, the Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, Tony Donovan said, “Most people appreciate that it is extremely important to make a Will, but either never get round to it or continue to put it off on the basis that they are too young and it is something that they will do when they are much older. Unfortunately 7 out of 10 people die without sorting it out, in spite of the clear benefits. By making a Will you take the pressure off those nearest and dearest to you who will receive your money and property, rather than it being left to the rules of law to decide.” “Even if you have made a will, perhaps it was so long ago that it is time to consider whether it needs revising. Don’t miss this opportunity to put matters straight!”

INDOOR BOWLS FUN DAY SATURDAY 30th September from 12 till 4pm Charnwood Indoor Bowls Club invite everyone to their Family Fun Day. Entry is free and there will be a variety of fun bowling games to try with prizes to be won! There will also be a licensed bar, hot and cold food, trade stands and craft stalls and a bowls treasure hunt. The club is situated in Browns Lane Loughborough just to the left of the Leisure Centre. Indoor bowls is a unique sport that can be learnt in minutes. It does not depend on strength or aerobic capacity, making it a wonderful sport for families to enjoy together.

Park and Ride fares to change this month The cost of using the city and county’s Park and Ride service will change this month. Leicestershire County Council and Leicester City Council will be reducing the cost of a longer-term season ticket for commuters to encourage more motorists to use the service and help to reduce congestion on the roads. From Monday, 4 September, people buying a 52-week ticket from September will see the cost of their ticket drop from £420 to £320. Those who decide to purchase a 26-week ticket will pay £160 instead of £230, while the price of a 13-week ticket will be reduced from £130 to £80. In what will be the first significant changes made to fares on the service since 2009, the cost of other Park and Ride tickets will increase. The cost of a day ticket will rise from £3 to £3.50, with a group day ticket – for a car and up to 5 people – increasing from £3.50 to £4. Meanwhile, fares for concessionary tickets are also changing. The Park and Cycle scheme will also see drivers taking part paying £50 per year to park their cars and complete their journey to the city centre by bike. All of Leicester’s Park and Ride services – operating from Enderby, Meynell’s Gorse and Birstall – are provided jointly by Leicestershire County Council and Leicester City Council. Councillor Adam Clarke, assistant city mayor for the environment, said: “We know that cost is a key factor when people decide how to make their journeys, so we’ve looked at how we can make our Park and Ride services more attractive to those who regularly drive into the city centre. “Under the proposed new, simpler pricing structure, a season ticket holder who commutes to the city centre five times a week would pay just over £1 per day to leave their car in our secure car parks and travel into the city centre on a comfortable bus, in designated bus lanes, with free WiFi. “Compared to the costs of all-day parking in the city centre, this clearly represents good value for money, and we hope that it will encourage more commuters to switch to Park & Ride.”

Indoor bowls is a sport that often gets overlooked but is inexpensive and suitable for all ages from 9 to 99! Indoor bowls is also ideal for people who live alone. The social side of the sport offers the opportunity to chat to other bowlers in the friendly, welcoming atmosphere of our newly refurbished lounge area. The club looks forward to letting as many people as possible try this inclusive sport. All equipment, for both children and adults, will be provided and,of course, this free event is not weather dependent! Alzheimer’s Society seeks volunteers to help make a difference to the lives of people with dementia Alzheimer’s Society in Leicestershire and Rutland is looking for volunteers to support people with dementia keep doing the things they love. The charity has launched a recruitment drive for ‘Side By Side volunteers’ to work across both counties. The service involves people with dementia and volunteers doing things such as visiting the gym, walking or visiting places of interest together. There are 12000 people living with dementia in Leicestershire and 600 people with dementia in Rutland, and that number is expected to rise. Suna Tilley, Alzheimer’s Society Side By Side Coordinator for Leicestershire and Rutland said: “The sad reality is that people with dementia can often become isolated and find it difficult to remain part of their community. Taking part in hobbies or activities they previously enjoyed can seem too difficult. This is what Side by Side aims to change. We currently have 36 volunteers in Leicestershire and Rutland and we need to double that number. It's a flexible way to give your time and you really can make a huge difference to someone's life.’ Volunteers are given training and are reimbursed for expenses. Anyone interested in finding out more about volunteering for Alzheimer’s Society’s in Leicestershire and Rutland should contact Suna Tilley Side By Side Coordinator on 0116 2311113
