Rothley Parish Church

Let us know      about your   World War One   events  

Refurbishment of the Roll of Honour The restoration of the Roll of Honour during the centenary year of The Great War was the wish of the late John Sheppard DCM, who attended the church regularly and did much voluntary work for Rothley over many decades. The wooden memorial is located near the West Door (Tower).

Charnwood Borough Council will be supporting  a series of events on Sunday November 11 to   mark 100 years since the end of World War One.

In addition to the annual remembrance  parade in Loughborough, a Charnwood Heritage Plaque will be unveiled in Loughbor  ough Market Place as a lasting reminder of the soldiers who gathered there before going to war.

John Sheppard consulted the Parochial Church Council in September 2014. The PCC agreed to go ahead with the work. John died on 26th February 2015 and Frank and Marion Whitby took over the project. The Roll of Honour in Rothley Parish Church is dedicated to 292 men from Rothley village who served in The Great War 19141918. It is unusual in that it records the names of all the Rothley men who served and this provides additional information for local families and researchers. The 28 names of those who died are recorded in gold lettering in the centre panel and the lettering for the 264 names on the folding wings of the memorial is in red. Over the years the lettering on the memorial has deteriorated and in some places it is difficult to read. Both the red and gold are in need of attention. There is additional wording at the head and foot of the frame. The timber frame, centre panel and wings also need repairing, cleaning and protecting for the first time since it was presented by Catherine Broadhurst of Rothley Temple. Eight companies were approached for quotes to carry out the refurbishment. After site visits and much thought, it was decided to ask BELGRAVE CONSERVATION from Derbyshire to undertake the work. This company, which specialises in fine and decorative art conservation, is accredited by ICON (The Institute of Conservation). Work such as this requires a Faculty (or Permission) from the Diocese of Leicester. Preparing the Faculty Application papers started in spring 2017. On Monday 23 July 2018, Claire Ridley ACR and Dr Campbell Norman-Smith of Belgrave Conservation began work on the memorial. The work took 5 days. The aim of the restoration is to carry out a complete and sympathetic refurbishment which does service to this beautiful and unusual memorial. Rothley Parish Church (LE7 7PD) is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday during the summer months if you would like to see the Roll of Honour.

Other events in the town centre include a live showcase event supported by a big screen in the Market Place, a tea dance and exhibition at Loughborough Town Hall, Century of Stories at Charnwood Museum and a procession of a life size model of Songster Charnwood’s very own warhorse which will be covered in poppies handmade by local school children. There will also be a lighting of a beacon in Queen’s Park at 7pm as part of a nationwide beacon lighting scheme. If you’re hosting a remembrance Sunday parade or are planning on lighting a beacon, please contact the Business Support Team on neighbourhoods.communities@charnwood.gov .uk or by phone on 01509 634710.

The Council will then add the information to its dedicated World War One commemoration webpage www.charnwood.gov.uk/WW1. The Council is also currently part way through a £280,000 conservation project on the Carillon Tower in Queen’s Park in Loughborough which will be completed in time for November 11.

Rothley Vineyard wins two medals Carillon and a trophy Lace and Handicraft Group Liz Robson, vineyard proprietor at Rothley Wine Estate, left the impending grape harvest for a day to attend the Mercian Vineyards Association Awards. King Richard is the flagship wine, which took a silver medal and the rosé Battle Royal attained a bronze.

We are a group of ladies and one man who meet once a month, usually the first Saturday of the month to work on our various crafts. These include bobbin lace, cross-stitch, quilting, beading, knitting and there is always time for some chitchat.

Liz Robson, said “I am so pleased with these results, because the 2017 vintage had been very challenging with the May frost wiping out most of the shoots on the Siegerrebe vines. Siegerrebe is combined with Solaris to make the King Richard wine. We had to use Madeleine Angevine to substitute most of the Siegerrebe loss. This resulted in a more full bodied wine, but lost the Gewertztraminer characteristics especially the lovely elderflower aroma. I nearly did not enter the wine, but am so glad that I did with this wonderful result. There was only one gold medal awarded in the entire competition, so for my wine to gain silver is tremendous. I am so pleased.”

We meet 10 am to 4 pm at Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall.

Then the trophies were awarded and there was another surprise in store. Liz was awarded the Henry Robson Trophy for the wine personality of the year. David Bates, the competition secretary praised Liz for her hard work, enthusiasm and team work as she motivates others within the association. In particular her work as honorary editor of the MVA Grapevine magazine came in for high praise.

The cost is £20 per year or £2 50 per session/part year. Bring a packed lunch, tea/coffee is provided. Free car park/street parking.

Liz joked “I should not be awarded this trophy because I gave it in the first place!” The trophy is in memory of her father, the late Dr. Henry Robson who was one of the early pioneers of the Sports Medicine movement who was credited with bringing Sports Medicine to Loughborough.”

Bring sites starting to be removed across the borough The process to remove bring sites across Charnwood has started in a move which will save taxpayers around £20,000 a year. The Council announced plans earlier in the year to remove 79 glass and aluminium recycling banks at a number of locations. The recycling banks are no longer necessary as the materials can be recycled in the Council’s kerbside scheme. A number of recycling banks have already been removed and the rest will be taken away throughout September and October. The plans do not affect charity recycling banks which often collect clothing, shoes and books or the household waste and recycling sites operated by the county council. The move will leave 34 bring sites with recycling banks for textiles, glass and some other items. Matt Bradford, head of cleansing and open spaces at the Council, said: “The reality of the situation is these recycling banks simply duplicate the kerbside recycling service so we are confident there will not be any impact on recycling levels in the borough. “To retain them means using taxpayers’ money to pay for something we do not really need and they were introduced 20 or 30 years ago when council recycling services were much more limited.”

NEW LADIES CHAMPION AT ROTHLEY PARK GOLF CLUB Rothley Park Golf Club’s new Ladies Champion is Jo Mayfield. Jo only joined the club two years again so was delighted to pick up the trophy: Jo says: “Becoming the 2018 ladies club champion is a real achievement considering we have such a strong ladies section, including some very talented junior girls. The final round ended in a tie but after a three hole play off I eventually won by one shot.” Well done also to runner up Maz Sharpe and all the ladies who took part in and organised the day. Rothley Park has one of the largest ladies sections in the county with an excellent competition and social calendar. There is currently a waiting list for full time membership at the club but next spring will see the start once again of the successful mixed Rothley Park Academy, where beginners and ‘returners’ to golf can spend six months under the guidance of Club Professional Katie Tebbet improving their game, hopefully with a view to becoming a member. The Academy runs from April to September. More information can be obtained on the club’s website or by ringing Katie at the Pro Shop.

Full steam ahead for Charnwood Community Lottery People are being urged to take a chance and make a difference by supporting Charnwood Community Lottery which launched recently.

Girl Guides to learn about money

Tickets for the lottery, which is being run by the borough council are now on sale and will help raise money for good causes, charities and voluntary organisations.

GIRL GUIDES are to learn how to look after money, after the introduction of a new ‘saver’ badge.

For every £1 ticket, 60p will go towards helping a good cause and players can win up to £25,000. The lottery was launched at Great Central Railway in Loughborough which has kindly donated an extra prize for the very first draw. Chris Traill, strategic director for neighbourhoods and wellbeing at the Council, said: “We are absolutely delighted to launch the Charnwood Community Lottery as it will help raise money for lots of good causes in the borough who do great work for the benefit of residents. “The lottery also means people can choose to help a specific group, perhaps one that’s close to their hearts, and possibly win anything up to £25,000. We hope the lottery is empowering for the organisations involved and for ticket buyers. As we’ve said, people can take a chance and make a difference “We would like to thank the groups who have signed up so far but I would encourage the many other fantastic organisations in Charnwood to consider getting involved. Simply visit the lottery website for more information. “The Council decided to set up a lottery to further support the local voluntary and community sector.” A number of groups have already signed up to be involved including: • Loughborough Leggo Youth Group • Marios Tinenti Centre • Peter Le Marchant Trust • Quorn Local History Group • Coping with Cancer in Leicestershire and Rutland • Shepshed Toy Library • Anstey Community Library • Gorse Covert Community Centre • Citizens Advice Charnwood • Go-Getta CIC • Loughborough Wellbeing Centre CIC Ltd • Living Without Abuse • Above & Beyond • Grange Park Centre • Falcon Support Services • Glebe House (Charnwood) Ltd • Shepshed Dolphins Swimming Group Caroline Darrall, chairperson at Loughborough Leggo, said: “We are pleased to join the Charnwood Lottery as it is a creative and effective way to raise much-needed regular funding, during difficult financial times. The money raised will help our young people with special needs to reach their full potential.” The first Charnwood Community Lottery draw takes place on September 29, 2018. To mark the occasion, the lottery has two additional prizes, an iPad and a dining experience for two at Great Central Railway worth over £100. To buy a ticket, please visit www.charnwoodlottery.co.uk where you will be asked to create an account. When a participant chooses to support one of the registered charities or good causes, the organisation will receive a 50p donation, with 10p going towards a central community fund. If no charity is chosen, all 60 pence goes to the community fund. The council will use the community fund to support local projects and good causes through its grants scheme. Lottery management company, Gatherwell, has been appointed to run the scheme, having already launched similar lotteries in places such as Melton Mowbray, Corby and Mansfield. Gatherwell's managing director Ben Speare said: "We are really pleased to see Charnwood Community Lottery being launched to the public and look forward to the organisations involved selling tickets to their supporters and raising the funds they need."

Girlguiding UK has created the badge with the aim of improving financial literacy among teenagers. The girls, aged 10 to 14, must prove that they can manage cash efficiently, budget effectively and put aside money for the future, in order to win the badge. The badge has been created in cooperation with the insurer Legal & General, and was felt to be important as money management is a skill they will need all their adult lives.

Numbers of bags plummet CONGRATULATIONS! We are using many fewer plastic bags. On average, we now use about 19 a year – as opposed to 140 a year. The number of disposable carrier bags issued by the seven biggest supermarket chains has declined by 86 per cent since the charge was introduced in 2015, according to statistics from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Michal Gove, the Environment Secretary, has said it is vital to reverse the ‘rising tide of plastic waste finding its ways into our rivers, seas and oceans, and the catastrophic impact this is having on our marine environment.’

GCR CANAL BRIDGE APPEAL REACHES £250,000 Work set to go ahead on historic structure this winter The Great Central Railway's appeal for funds to repair a Victorian bridge in Loughborough has reached the quarter of a million pounds mark. It’s expected work work will go ahead over the coming winter.

LEICESTERSHIRE parents and carers with children due to start at secondary school next year are being encouraged to apply for places at their preferred schools before October 31. They will also find an interactive ‘Your Guide to education’ online to help focus their search and shortlist up to three preferred schools.

The rapid climb from the previous total follows a successful national campaign in major magazines raising awareness of the project. Repairing the canal bridge to carry steam and diesel heritage trains is part of the bigger reunification scheme, which will bring together two halves of the Great Central Railway to create an eighteen mile whole GCR, running across the East Midlands. Already, millions of pounds has been invested building a new bridge over the Midland Main Line in Loughborough. “We are grateful to everyone who continues to respond to our appeal,â€? said the Great Central Railways Managing Director Michael Gough. “During our national campaign we attracted many new donors from across the UK, but it is extremely humbling to still be receiving donations from the railway’s friends in the community.â€? The work on the bridge needs to take place in the winter months to avoid major disruption to pleasure boat traffic on the canal. No date has yet been set for work to begin, while arrangements with contractors are concluded. The appeal has a target of four hundred and seventy five thousand pounds. Beyond the appeal for the bridge work, funds will then need to be raised for the design work and preparation of a planning application for the remainder of the reunification scheme - one of the largest projects ever undertaken by a UK heritage railway. “The reunification project is a long term aim, but we believe when complete it will be a benefit to the East Midlands economy and a significant national attraction,â€? continued Michael. “The canal bridge is the next part of the jigsaw. The support of everyone including our stakeholders is so encouraging. Meanwhile, as we plan the expansion, vital work is also continuing on our existing facilities and infrastructure to ensure the railway is something we can all be proud of.â€? To find out more about the canal bridge appeal, the reunification project AND to make a donation online, head to www.gcrailway.co.uk/unify Donations to the appeal through the post can be made with a cheque (payable to 'DAVID CLARKE RAILWAY TRUST' with Crossing the Canal written on the rear) sent to, DCRT, Lovatt House, 3 Wharncliffe Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 1SL.

Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and families, said: “Last year 96% of Leicestershire parents submitted their application online and we encourage people to use this approach. “We also want to remind parents to maximise their opportunities by applying for three schools, including their catchment school. There is no automatic entry for any school, so it is very important for applications to be submitted before the closing date. Open evenings held at schools, for parents and carers to view facilities and speak to the teachers, can be useful in helping determine which school is best for their child. Schools should be contacted directly, from the start of term and before the closing date, to find out more. Parents unable to apply online may download a form from the website (www.leicestershire.gov.uk/ education-and-children/schools-collegesandacademies/school-admissions), fill it in and post it by the closing date. Alternatively they may call the Customer Service Centre on 0116 305 6684 and request a form to be sent out.

Whether you run for the enjoyment of it or sponsored for charity, both runs are suitable for all abilities and are entirely off-road along woodland pathways and bridleways although only the 10K includes hill climbs. There is also the possibility of 4 friends running together as a relay team where no-one runs more than 3K but the team covers the whole 10K. Christmas craft fair will raise vital funds for local heart charity On Sunday 4 November, local heart charity, *the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT) will be holding their annual Christmas craft fair. Now in its 3rd year, the event will be held at the new Mountsorrel Memorial Centre, and will be open from 10.30-4.30pm. The JHMT Christmas Fair will be a chance for Christmas shoppers to choose from a range beautiful gifts from a range of uniquely crafted items made with skill, love and care by talented local artisans. Items will include jewellery, shabby chic furniture, home interiors and accessories, paintings and artwork, glassware, candles, cards, craft gins, local fine wines and delicatessen goods all with the emphasis on quality products which are not available on the high street. Angie Humphries from the Trust said: “The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust was formed out of the tragic loss of my amazing son Joe who collapsed and died aged just 14 after a run with one of his best friends. “Joe was a victim of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS), a heart condition which causes sudden, unexpected death in young people and can often go undiagnosed. The void which was left by Joe’s tragically sudden death can never be filled, but Joe’s legacy is the fabulous work of the Trust created in his name (www.jhmt.org.uk) “By coming along to our Christmas craft fair, you can buy unique eclectic and beautiful gifts, have a piece of homemade cake with a cuppa and help to save young lives in the process.” The craft fair is free to attend – although a discretionary donation on entry would be very much appreciated. All proceeds will go to the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust. For more information on the work of the Trust, visit www.jhmt.org.uk

Lace is making Bradgate Park Calendar Official               a come   back               Launch Evening               

Has anyone else noticed that lace is  ladies    in the   a comeback and children’s fashion industry? The lace may be printed, embroidered, woven or machine lace. The lace may be in the form       of a motif, an edging, part or the entire   There is a craft still in current   garment.  usage that only a few people may be aware of that is bobbin lace. This craft is slowing becoming a popular craft      again due to the popularity of the fashion  industry.

making 

The Bradgate Park Calendar had its official launch  Stamford Arms,  Groby,   Leicester night  at the on 8th August, and was received with much anticipation from all the members of The Bradgate Rotary   Club  and   Peter Tyldesley  (Director   of Bradgate Park and Trust).

 

The calendar, now in its third year, has raised over £7000 for the Bradgate Park Trust, a charity which relies on voluntary support and donations as well as projects such as this one to help run and  maintain Bradgate Park. Bradgate Rotary Club have organised this wonderful project to provide a beautiful product to sell within the Bradgate Park shop, and in their online store, which along with the sponsorship of local companies will provide much needed income for the Trust. The calendar was commissioned by Bradgate Rotary Club, who support and help many local charities and community events, and was designed by Summer Designs a newly set up freelance Graphic designer who is passionate for work within the local community. The Rotary Club wish to give special thanks to the Leicester Forest Photographic Society who provided the photos for the calendar, they welcome anyone interested in their work to visit their Annual Summer Exhibition, or to one of their open evenings, more information at www.lfps.org.uk. Also a big thank you to Groby Allotment Society who provided the calendar with recipes of the month, all inspired by the locally grown produce fresh from the allotments. Copies of the calendar can be purchased from the Bradgate Park Shop and their online store (www.bradgatepark.org/shop) shortly and would make excellent gifts. The money raised from the sale of the calendars will go to the Bradgate Park Trust.

There is an opportunity to learn the craft yourself. Classes are being held at Groby Village Hall LE6 0DJ on Wednesday mornings. We begin again on September 12th 10 am to 12 30 and run for 30 weeks. You are welcome to attend a taster session where you will be introduced to the craft. Basic equipment may be borrowed for the first few weeks; the Tutor has Beginners Kits for sale if required. You may already be a lacemaker and looking for further help or join to an established group for social contact. Groby Lace Class has been running for over 15 years and a wonderful way to explore a new craft.
