CRAFT SUPPLIES, PAT
Majnouna

By Joumana Medlej
I forage the main ingredient in the woodlands around where I live, heat-treat it and pound it to powder. The other components are partly sourced from a specialized art shop (and divided up/pounded/prepared as necessary) and partly reclaimed. This is one of the original ancient ink recipes; it is based on tannic acid that is derived from oak trees, and is not harmful to the environment (unlike the petroleum-based inks that are commercially available). The kit is studied so that the ingredients come packaged in the jars that will be used to then stock the ink, except for the iron salt which is packed in a paper envelope. The other tools, a bamboo stirrer and butter muslin, are reusable but ultimately compostable. The large jar is itself a reuse of a food jar that’s been cleaned and sterilized. The only plastic is the lid of the small jar (which is a quality product meant for a lifetime of use) and no plastic at all is used for packing and shipping. On the user end, boiling water is the only energy-consuming process required to prepare the ink.
“Make Your Own Ink” Kit for calligraphy or brushwork Ditch the petroleum-based commercial inks and make your own with this easy kit based on one of humanity’s oldest recipes. I have been making my own ink for a while and I forage the main ingredient (oak galls) in my local woodlands. This kit was put together to allow you to experience the alchemical process of working from nature. You will be making a year’s worth of ink, at a fraction of its price in specialized shops and with minimal footprint (plastic-free, no waste that is not compostable, no use of energy other than boiling water). Oak gall ink or iron gall ink was the medium used in all cultures to write on parchment, before paper brought carbon inks to the fore. It is thinner than Indian ink, with a wider range from deep black to transparent grey depending how much liquid is deposited on the paper; exposure to air darkens it as it dries. It is suitable for use with any dipping instrument: bamboo/ reed pens, metallic nibs (but they should be rinsed thoroughly after use to prevent corrosion over time), quill pens, watercolour brushes... Completely waterproof once dry and safe to paint over with watercolour or other.

Wool Couture on Etsy Wool Couture came about when founder/co-owner, Claire, swapped a high profile, pressured life of NHS Director to pursue her stress-relief passion for knitting and soon invested her business acumen into her burgeoning venture. Claire’s love for knitting and crocheting rapidly grew into the successful enterprise it is today. Originally inspired by giant knitting and crocheting, including arm-knitting, more crafts were added into the mix and became part of the Wool Couture offering, with a twist of macramé and the wonder of weaving. What Claire is to wool and yarn crafting, Ali is to woodturning. Ali, co-owner of Wool Couture, turns her creative hand to fashion out all our knitting, crocheting and weaving tools from wood (only sourced from FSC forests) in the workshop in Yorkshire – completing the natural love affair between Wood and Wool. And it makes us just a little bit distinctive in the world of wool and yarn craft, which is rather novel.
Weaving Loom Kit Designed by makers for makers, the Woolly Mammoth loom is the weaving loom of all weaving looms! It’s so versatile that it allows the weaver to create designs in either landscape or portrait, as well as giving the option as to whether to make one giant weaving or several smaller patterns. Combine the Woolly Mammoth loom with Wool Couture’s ‘Thick Roving Yarn’ for that extra special touch. So, when you’re making that wall hanging or cushion you really can create a unique design for that striking statement piece! Laser cut by the team of artisans and hand finished in the Yorkshire studio with strong 9mm FSC certified laser plywood. Wool Couture is passionate about the worlds environment and the FSC ensures responsible management of our world’s forests.

Lincolnshire on Etsy Fenn Crafts
By Sandy Mulley
WORKSHOP:
My love of crafts started as a young child and whilst at a craft fair 6 years ago I met a felting artist. I was captivated by what could be created with a felting needle and a handful of wool and, once discovered, I never looked back. I had found my craft!
Needle Felted Nordic Gnome Workshop 13th and 27th October Black Smith Shop Crafts Foggathorpe, Yorkshire, UK
With my new-found passion I embarked on my own needle felting journey. Combining my love of the Lincolnshire landscape (home for 15 years) our British woodland animals and a desire to share this fabulously addictive, and highly sustainable craft, I set about designing my own creations, award-winning needle felting kits and blog. I regularly hold workshops and talks.
This workshop is equally enjoyable for novices to needle felting and to those who are more experienced at this fascinating craft. No tricky patterns. No sewing. No wires. No expensive fancy equipment! All you need to bring is the enthusiasm! All materials will be provided. CONTACTS:
It is a well-known fact – and one that I believe in passionately - that crafts of any kind can help ease the mind and provide a welcome and important distraction from the ‘noise’ of our daily lives. This is especially true with needle felting because it appeals to every age, gender and skill level. All you need is enthusiasm. As an added bonus, crafts of any kind naturally create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly mindset. Thy allow us to focus on the things we really enjoy rather than what a consumer led society leads us to believe we need. Baby steps…
www.blacksmithshopcrafts.co.uk
Needle felting mat It is made from quality tight weave Hessian/Burlap and is completely biodegradable, eco friendly, organic and can be used time and time again. When you have eventually finished with it (only if you are making many flat felted pieces) you can preserve it by putting a piece of flat felt on top of it or (after removing the rice) add it straight to the compost bin. I have been using mine for 3D felting, and some flat felting, for almost a year and it is still good to go.

All made by hand at my Lincolnshire home studio. It’s just carded wool and a felting needle; doesn’t really get any simpler than that. Wool, as a fibre, is about as sustainable as a material gets. Amberhound on Etsy By Kim Marshall Amberhound started out making dog bandanas and tote bags but when a friend and fellow small business owner asked if we could collaborate on a plastic free project, things changed! We still make dog items and bags but we've also branched into reusable and sustainable products, ranging from coffee filters to locally sourced beeswax food wraps.
DIY Beeswax Wrap Kit As plastic free products grow in popularity so does the need for DIY money-saving solutions, and as a beeswax food wrap producer, I've found that there is a lot of interest in how beeswax wraps are made. In this kit, I've put together the essentials needed to create three beeswax food wraps allowing those interested to have a go without investing in lots of beeswax or fabric. Of course, making a kit without waste is also important which is why it is in an easily reusable glass jar instead of cardboard. Full instructions are provided.

By Hailey S. Phelen
The Traveling Bee all started when my passion for beekeeping left me with excess beeswax and I created my first beeswax wrap. I never planned to turn that into a business but soon fell in love with them and knew that others would too. Being eco-friendly is always something I have been deeply passionate about and bringing great products to those that wish to become less reliant on plastic and our throw-away culture is my life’s dream. Considering my passion for the environment and the nature of my products, every single item you purchase from The Traveling Bee is guaranteed to be 100% made with compostable and biodegradable materials. Even down to the packaging and shipping materials. As a woman small business owner and entrepreneur, a wife, and a mother, it is my greatest pride to create quality products for my customers. Products that fill the need.

Beeswax Wraps - Kids Lunch Set Beeswax wraps are the perfect substitution for plastic wrap and baggies. I make each beeswax wrap by hand: infusing 100% cotton with a mixture of organic beeswax, pine tree resin, and organic coconut oil. Using the heat of your hands you can cover dishes, wrap cut produce to keep it fresh, wrap a sandwich for lunch, or take a snack on the go. Each wrap is 100% compostable and biodegradable, meaning everything they are made from comes from the Earth and can return back to it. They are also reusable and last around a year. This set of beeswax wraps for kids is perfect for heading back to school! Each set comes with one small wrap, two child sized snack bags, and one sandwich wrap. They’re the perfect way to be eco-friendly while also teaching your children how to make conscious decisions about the products we use and the plastic we rely too heavily on. They’re made to fit little hands perfectly and come in fun patterns to encourage children to take care of them.

ORGANIC DRESS By Antonella Dress in Proteine Rose Fiber with belt in bamboo The Rose’s fiber derives from a renewable protein present in cereals. We can consider it as the only “active” fiber as its 18 amino acids have beneficial effects on skin and health. This fiber is distinguished from the others for its ability to absorb humidity, for the sensation of softness and for its beneficial properties on skin.

In translation from our native Belarusian language the word “pavietra” means “air”. For us this is a symbol of lightness and freedom, with which we aim to fill our clothes. We want to give a sense of comfort and coziness to girls and women that wear our clothes. Also we want them to realize that all of us are special. We can’t but pay attention to the ecological component of our work as well. We strive for calling ourselves sustainable fashion brand. That’s why we use natural, eco-friendly materials, all our clothes are designed by hand at our small home-studio. We treat every detail with trembling and pay quite a great attention to it. Almost every piece of work has handmade stitches, which make our clothes special.

I design and sell crochet patterns, kits and finished items to share the joy of creativity and the handmade. My business is as environmentallysustainable as I can make it, from the gorgeous organically-farmed merino wool and cotton that go into my kits; to the 100% renewable electricity that powers my home and my business cards which I cut by hand from old cereal packets.

Beautiful handmade needle felted Shaped and decorated, using 100% pure un-spun wool, and Teeswater locks for embellishment. All made by hand at my Lincolnshire home studio. It’s just carded wool and a felting needle; doesn’t really get any simpler than that. Wool, as a fibre, is about as sustainable as a material gets. It does no harm to the environment, is fully sustainable and completely biodegradable. I use 95% British wool to reduce the carbon footprint and support British farmers and the family run businesses I purchase from.

FROM THE BLOG... So It Begins With Trash Talk It was if the world had stopped turning, just for a second, as I stood poised over the bin with the dishwasher tablet packet. The dead whale from Blue Planet 2 was there, judging me. This innocent looking plastic packaging wasn’t so innocent. It would outlive me, my children, my grandchildren and countless more generations. I felt helpless and lost as I released the plastic into the bin. Eaten by guilt I swore then and there things would be different. I knew I was part of the problem that killed that baby whale. I vowed to be part of the solution...

Exploring Wabi Sabi with Louise O’Hara When I first started following Louise O’Hara on Facebook, she still called her page Drawn to Stitch, and I would marvel at the tactile landscapes that took me away to my heart’s home in the Highlands of Scotland. The Craft of Basket Making with Rachel Evans “I started my basketmaking journey at the age of 21. After I graduated I worked in the outdoors, managing nature reserves and teaching environmental education to young people. After meeting a few colleagues that made baskets as a hobby, I was intrigued and went on a few day courses to learn how to make round baskets. I did some lovely courses at the Wyre Forest Discovery Centre, playing with natural materials gathered in the forest such as rush, plant dyes and willow.”...

Zero Waste and Eucalyptus – A Match Made in Heaven I am really excited about a new direction in my range of eco fashions! The catalyst was some merino and alpaca blanket remnants sourced from Waverley Woollen Mills in Launceston, Tasmania (about 1 ½ hours’ drive from here; established in 1847). I absolutely love how soft their fabrics are, but the biggest plus for me was the opportunity to use a quality waste product that is locally obtainable...

Part Two: Zero Waste and Eucalyptus – A Match Made in Heaven! In my last blog post, I hinted that I was exploring a new development in my eco fashions. I have a small stash of felted and/or damaged knitwear which I thought had possibilities! Their original purpose was to cut them up to make ‘tattered’ key hangers. I made a lot of these hangers over several years, but felt it was time to move on from that, even though I still had the raw materials...

FASHION REVOLUTION WEEK 2018 The Death of Fast Fashion – Slowing Down for a Fashion Revolution “Slow fashion“, is a phrase first used by Kate Fletcher, a pioneer in the sustainable fashion movement and Professor of Sustainability, Design and Fashion at London College of Fashion. In an article published by The Ecologist in 2007, she compared the ecologically/sustainable/ethical focus of those pushing against the mainstream fashion industry to the slow food movement.

Boro and Sashiko- The Japanese Art of Clothing Repair There was a time when a wooden darning mushroom would be an essential household item, used for darning holes in socks and patching trouser knees and shirt elbows. I have one that belonged to my grandmother, and probably her mother before her. It is soft, worn, and carries the presence of all the women whose hands held it before me to darn my ancestors socks and patch up their work clothes.

Second Hand News – Why Reusing Clothes is Back in Fashion I grew up in a family where hand me downs were the staple of our wardrobes. Everything I owed, clothes-wise, until I was 16 and earning, was at least second hand. Often third or fourth hand. My cousin’s jeans (that had been her brother’s before her), our elderly neighbor’s daughter’s pink striped cotton granddad shirt (oh how I loved that shirt!), the fluffy pink jumper I wore until it fell apart that came from a kindly anonymous charitable donation in the form of a black bag full of clothes, left in the porch one evening in the summer holidays.

She was absolutely, the height of fashion.

The Rise and Rise of Bespoke Upcycled Fashion Bespoke, up-cycled fashion is on the rise, and I really do have to bite my tongue and try not to say “about time!”. Festival of Natural Fibres 8th of September 2018 at Crafts Central, London, UK Organised by the Khadi Initiative Textile and fashion can be a force for good and a vehicle for change. Gandhi’s use of khadi for political and economic organisation in India’s nonviolent freedom movement was a masterstroke. Khadi helped create a new nationalist identity – neither the traditional hierarchical nor a colonial one which was coming into vogue in the early 20th Century. Alas, as we are witnessing today, textile can also be a force for destruction. Statistics presented by Ellen MacArthur Foundation show that If the present trend continues, the textile industry will add 22 million tons of microfibres to the ocean, will have a 26% share of the carbon budget and consume 300 million tons of oil by 2050. Scary! If we act now – this can change – textile can become a force for good. Nature has the answers – we just need to listen to them. An amazing array of fibres and dyes – and ways of using them for fabric in less harmful ways. Good for the environment, great for the global community of artisans and friendly for your skin.
COME AND JOIN US on the 8TH OF SEPTEMBER at an event at Crafts Central, a stunning venue for events and space for crafts studios – facilitated by Freeweaver SAORI Studio and organised by the Khadi Initiative in collaboration with a wide and growing network. An exhibit on the walls, which be a prominent feature of the event will be on display from 5th to 9th September. There will be practical crafts workshops on 9th September. . www.khadi.london/khadi-initiative

A mAGAZINE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL CRAFT MOVEMENT Why the name “No Serial Number”? Because nature and craft share a common characteristic, they are not made in series. They are both the result of an organic, slow process of growth and development. Not one leaf is the same, nor is a handmade creation. Crafts remind us that our hands and minds can work in tune with our natural environment to make things that are useful, or simply beautiful. As a society, we are in urgent need to slow down and preserve our collective environmental and artisanal heritages from unsustainable production practices and corporate greed. No Serial Number Magazine is a humble attempt to explore how human creativity, nature and activism intersect in contemporary society. Who is it for? artists, artisans, casual makers, craftivists, and conscious citizens Topics textile arts • natural colours • traditional trades and crafts • creative upcycling and salvaging • slow fashion • zero-waste lifestyle • biodiversity • kitchen chronicles • grassroots environmental movements INDEPENDENTLY PUBLISHED BY NO SERIAL NUMBER
