By Beverly D. I am a relatively new designer living in The Fair City of Perth, Scotland. I love to work with colour and particularly like to knit Fair Isle and stranded projects. I can be inspired by the colours of an object, the scenery around me or manhole covers in the pavement, quite literally anything. I am delighted to have won the Jamieson and Smith Winter KAL two years running. I find knitting to be a very soothing and therapeutic pastime and knit every day.

y Maven O n E ts Patterns
CRAFT SUPPLIES, PATTERNS & TUTORIALS
By Sharon M. After a long stint in the fashion industry I was disillusioned with the high turnover of fashion and the endless need to buy new - it didn’t reflect the life I was living. Maven Patterns was founded in 2015 with the principle of making sewing patterns that could be used to create garments that would be loved to give years of wear. Not the stuff of teenagers, but of the woman who knows what she likes and wants to wear it, to make it, love it and cherish it. And make it again. I like to think of them as quiet clothes. Clothes that will become part of daily life. Clothes that reflect their maker and her choices. There’s such a joy in the process of creating and a value and integrity to the final garment. We draft each pattern by hand, still at Granny’s old kitchen table, to create a balanced and considered garment – so you will want to re-use and re-create them again and again. That is, after all, the point.

‘I am a self taught artist / designer. I first became inspired to customise and upcycle my own clothing during my teenage years... I found this to be a perfect way in which I could combine my love for creating and experimenting with my own personal self expression. I live in South West Wales and work from home, creating clothing, bags and accessories using recycled pre-loved cashmere, wool vintage skirts and denim jeans to create my one of a kind designs. I make my designs in a playful style... including an element of quirkiness with a unique twist, which I feel gives each of my designs a personality of it's own... ‘

The Watercress Queen On Etsy By Lucie
x
These Hankies have been one of my most popular sets. They were made from a double duvet cover which was rescued from my local charity shop. When selecting textiles to turn to hankies I close my eyes and spend time feeling the fabric, it needs to make me smile to touch and then again when I open my eyes. I want everyone to be able to use real hankies. These were a pair of curtains, they were no good as curtains, but make wonderful hankies. The top part has been used for another set of curtains, meaning there was no waste at all.
x
My work as The Watercress Queen is a way of helping support our Aquaponic farm, working with home educated children, stroke survivors and anyone who needs us.
HANKIES
I am 49, I home educate two boys, and am a stroke survivor myself. I have been sewing since I was a child and being able to get back to sewing helped me discover the new me.
As with every product I make nothing new is used, all my threads come from charity shops reducing demand for new. I truly believe for now we have enough textiles in the world - we just need to use them better.

HANKIES When I saw this duvet cover in the charity shop I knew before I touched it that it would make the most wonderful colourful hankies. I dedicate all my hankies to my mum who spent her life with a hankie in her hand. Hankies should make us smile, not harm our biosphere and be affordable to all.

Reusable Cloth Pads
VIEW ON ETSY
These pads are the sustainable alternative of disposable lady pads. The move to Reusable Cloth pads dramatically increases quality-of-life of ladies, got used with the disposable: HEALTHY – The cotton pads prevents skin irritation, itchiness and rash; They are ventilating, “breathable”, hypoallergenic and comfortable to use. Frequently, the period is shorter by 1-2 days after move to reusable. Controversary, disposable contains plastic, blocking natural skin ventilation and often causes painful rashes. The synthetic over-absorbing fibres in disposables absorb all moisture, effectively disturbing the microflora balance and hence causing severe pains and infections especially during whole-day use over the week. SAFE – The premium or organic cotton textile is OEKO -TEX® certified – No toxic chemicals - pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, dyes, etc. are used in the production and processing of the cotton. While disposable contains whole range of toxic chemicals - plastics, artificial fragrances, dyes, deodorizers, adhesives, chemical gels, industrial cotton, contaminated with dioxins; which toxins are often non-biodegradable, accumulate in our bodies and cause severe side effects, like allergies, hormonal disorders, reproductive problems and gynaecological diseases. SUSTAINABLE – The long-time durable cloth pads drastically reduces the global waste: After 3-5 years of typical use, cloth pads can be recycled or composted and biodegrades in 1-2 years. Controversary, the plastic used for disposable, needs hundreds of years of degradation. In North America alone, more than 20 billion disposable tampons and pads are wasted every year! CHEAPER in long run – Reusable pads have higher initial cost, than disposable, but they last much, much longer! With good care, 3-5 years on average. The Reusable Cloth Pads are made of Premium 100% Cotton fabric: a gentle, soft cotton flannel topper, solid multi-layer flannel absorbent core, tiny waterproof layer and stylish beautiful pattern on the back. E ts y n O Emvironmental I have just moved from Bristol to Malmesbury, Wiltshire, where I live with my partner Jack. After graduating with a degree in Biomedical Science in July 2017 I decided to focus on being more environmentally conscious in an attempt to live a more sustainable and ethical lifestyle. Despite studying a science discipline, I have always had a passion for creativity. I began to make items for myself for use around the house, which then led to setting up my own Etsy shop. I now work closely with my mum, who is admittedly more skilled on the sewing machine than I am! I really enjoy what I do and find that managing my own routine and time allows me to better look after and prioritise my own mental wellbeing. We have a long list of ideas for future products, with some exciting releases to come in the near future!
These pads and Iiners are collaboration between myself and my mum who is much better on the sewing machine that I am! We often buy our materials from individual craft stores rather than chains to help support local businesses and communities. Some of the materials used, for example brush cotton in this particular example, is up-cycled and often second hand bed sheets, pillowcases and sometimes blankets which have been washed and cleaned. This is more sustainable compared to buying completely new materials everytime. We also try to avoid using synthetics and plastic based materials, although this isn’t always possible when using up-cylcled items, but everything is a balance!

I come from a long line of seamstresses and menders, using the skills taught by my grandmother who never wasted anything and a Haute Couture sewing Mum. I have created an eclectic mix of unique make's and re-make's. Inspired by what I find and salvage. My little rebellion against a fast, throw away, plastic world, never using brand new when so much is wasted and never wasting what I have.
bags and pouches A large furnishing fabric sample book was the main source of material for this collection of hand makes. Finished with preloved fabrics from my extensive stash and the legs of 4 pairs of jeans a client had asked to be turned into shorts.

The style of bags and pouches are simple and practical allowing the fabrics to speak. I like to make items to my preferences, like longer handles so I can sling it over my shoulder, lighter colours for the lining ( cause I hate not being able to see inside) or loops on zipped pouches to make it easy to open.

ts y E n O Lowen Fibre Arts I, Charly Derham-Ball am a textile artist living in Cornwall, UK. I can usually be found wandering the South West clifftops, parks and local woods looking for potential materials for naturally dyeing fabric, embroidery floss and yarn. I use these materials I dye to knit, weave and stitch items for my online shop.

Recently I have become smitten with indigo dye and have been using reclaimed cotton fabric to make hand embroidered/reverse appliquÊ bags and purses. I aim to make my business as sustainable and earth friendly as possible – recycling items and being conscious of the packaging I use.
SMALL BAG

This is a small bag which would be perfect for a small knitting project bag/cosmetic bag . I used reclaimed cotton fabric (from a local charity shop) and dyed it with indigo - it has had several dips in the indigo vat to achieve this vibrant blue. The interior of the bag is a calico fabric, which was also reclaimed. . The tree design on the bag has first been sketched by me and then hand stitched onto the front of the bag using hand dyed, reclaimed embroidery flosses (dyed by me with red onion skins, tea and red cabbage). The positive affirmation 'strong' has been stitched onto the bag. . The bag has a sturdy canvas fabric bottom with boxed corners. . A YKK metal zip has been installed into the bag using concealed zip edges. It has a zipper pull with wooden beads dyed by me with pomegranate, madder & tea. . Mother and son Liz and Alex started Lets Be Cats Jewellery a few years ago making unusual, alternative designs. Alex is now studying Textiles at Nottingham Trent and has created a range at Alex Vincent Textiles using upcycled fabric and plastic bags. Liz has continued Lets Be Cats Jewellery. specialising in using recycled materials including haberdashery, 1902 sheet music, vintage maps and computer parts. We live in a world with a throw-away mentality - so many items are thrown into landfill. Lets Be Cats jewellery like to think outside the box and think... how can that be re-used or upcycled into something completely different.
FABRIC APPLIQUE BADGES These fabric applique badges show a bird in flight and is the ideal little shot of colour to wear on your jacket or shirt. Each bird pinback is handmade and features upcycled fabrics which have been combined with free embroidery to create a unique design made by Alex Vincent Textiles.

ZERO WASTE ON THE BLOG... Why Mending Matters with Katrina Rodabaugh When I was 17, I went to an interview for a place on a Foundation Studies Art course at my local college. A mAGAZINE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL CRAFT MOVEMENT Why the name “No Serial Number”? Because nature and craft share a common characteristic, they are not made in series. They are both the result of an organic, slow process of growth and development. Not one leaf is the same, nor is a handmade creation. Crafts remind us that our hands and minds can work in tune with our natural environment to make things that are useful, or simply beautiful. As a society, we are in urgent need to slow down and preserve our collective environmental and artisanal heritages from unsustainable production practices and corporate greed. No Serial Number Magazine is a humble attempt to explore how human creativity, nature and activism intersect in contemporary society. Who is it for? artists, artisans, casual makers, craftivists, and conscious citizens Topics textile arts • natural colours • traditional trades and crafts • creative upcycling and salvaging • slow fashion • zero-waste lifestyle • biodiversity • kitchen chronicles • grassroots environmental movements INDEPENDENTLY PUBLISHED BY NO SERIAL NUMBER
