Hermanus FynArts is privileged to bring you an art exhibition in this historic local landmark. This, the first shul in Hermanus, was opened in 1930. Rev Chaim Fialkov was the only full time leader of the community for 50 years until he retired. With a dwindling community and irregular services, the old shul closed down and for many years the doors remained shut. During this time a group of concerned holiday home-owners decided to resurrect the congregation and repair the old shul under the guidance of Rabbi Moshe Silberhaft, spiritual leader to the Country Communities. Despite sustained efforts by locals to resurrect the congregation and improve their lot, this was not to be. With the changes to the Hermanus Main Road, the Jewish community decided to find a new home. On Sunday 7 September 2008 the new synagogue and Jewish centre, on the corner of Jose Burman Street and Lord Roberts Road, was consecrated. The old synagogue building is now privately owned. Hermanus Tourism is deeply grateful to the owners for allowing us to host an exhibition in this beautiful and authentic space for our first FynArts. The exhibition has been curated by Ilse Schermers of IS Art and will include works by local artists.
