Hermanus Charity It is the season for giving, so let us all give to those who really need it most. Whale Talk's annual Hermanus Charity Christmas Wish list has become a wonderful way of making many local charities and non profit organisations' Christmas wishes come true. The response from previous years has been simply sensational! We have once again approached various charities in Hermanus and asked them for their wish lists for Christmas and their goals for the New

Year. These organisations work tirelessly to improve the lives of those in need and they really need our help to continue their inspiring work. We implore you to please have a look

CAMPHILL SCHOOL HERMANUS Dear Father Christmas … For most of the children at Camphill School, Christmas has no meaning. There will be no Christmas presents, no new clothes, no Christmas dinner. More than 80% of the intellectually disabled children at Camphill come from severely disadvantaged families in the greater Hermanus area. Their parents are able to pay little or nothing towards school fees, let alone luxuries. Because many of the learners have multiple disabilities, the school offers them a range of therapies. Camphill School always has many needs, but for those who wish to put us on their gift list this Christmas, here are a few ideas: Bathing costumes for boys and girls, aged 6 to 19; knitting wool; glue sticks; powder paints and brushes; pencils and erasers, for arts and crafts; educational games, toys and books for the classrooms; seeds, seedlings and compost for the school's vegetable garden. Maintenance of the ageing buildings and extensive property is an ongoing struggle and the School is in need of a small tractor, a petrol hedge trimmer and a petrol garden blower. Funding and/or materials are desperately needed for painting, repairing and maintaining the school buildings and the children's house. The biggest and most expensive item on the list would be a new school bus. The children are fetched from their individual homes each morning and delivered back there in the afternoons and the school's current buses are rapidly reaching the end of their lives and costing the School a great deal in maintenance. So, dear Father Christmas, I don't know if a sleigh would work for us, but a reindeerpowered bus would be just perfect. For more information contact Elaine Davie at 028 312 4949 or email: school@camphill-

IZIBUSISO FOSTER HOME FOR ABANDONED AND ABUSED CHILDREN In Zwelihle, Hermanus, there is a small house which eight abandoned, abused and neglected children call home. This little home is called Izibusiso (the House of Many Blessings) and is a joint venture between the United Church in Hermanus and Hermanus Child Welfare. The children are cared for by a loving House Mother until permanent arrangements can be made to place them in “forever” homes. Izibusiso is in its 5th year of operation so the house is obviously fully operational with all the equipment in place needed to care for small children (they are mostly under 5 years of age). We do, however, continue to need assistance from the public to help cover the financial costs associated with running the house, so our Christmas wish list would include: Cash donations, nappies for babies aged 5 months to 2 years (Huggies or Pampers), Gift vouchers for stores where we can purchase shoes (Ackermans, Pep or Jet) and educational toys for children up to age 6. Our banking details : Izibusiso Foster

BAGS OF LOVE HERMANUS ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY What an exciting and challenging year we have had at Animal Welfare as we finally saw our own clinic / hospital become reality. In addition, we renovated a large part of our premises to provide more kennels in the section for small dogs and created a better outdoor area for the cats. We continue under trying times to accommodate the everexpanding dog population and rely totally on public generosity and donations. Thank God for those "angels" who love animals as much as we do and make our work easier by supporting us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and "paws". Our wish list never ends and as we move into 2014, we put out an appeal again, please: Food for dogs and cats (anything – preferably quality dry food), building supplies to enclose and expand our kennels for large dogs (bricks, sand, cement, roof sheets etc.), air-conditioning units for the new hospital, a vibracrete wall to separate runs for dog training, plastic dog "baskets", and plastic dog kennels, dog leads, preferably the cotton sliprope leads without choke chains (available at Naturally Animal), tough chew toys / balls for bigger dogs, as well as toys for pups and kittens, small food bowl for cats, roll of "sheepskin", washable material for our hospital cages (available at Vets), bookcases, wooden planks for shelves & storage crates for our Charity Shop and lastly volunteers for dog walking PLEASE! Thank you all and many blessings for the season. For more information please contact Judy Miller on 028 312 1281 or visit them at 18 Mitchell Street, Hermanus.

Our wish for this year is quite a simple one. We are hoping that, with your help, we will be able to add a little Christmas cheer to the poorest of the poor in our community. The BAGS OF LOVE campaign was officially launched by the mayor, Nicolette Botha-Guthrie on 1 November. The project is a community-wide endeavour supported by the churches, Rotary and many generous donors in their individual capacities. This is done by either filling a bag or donating money. The aim is to distribute more than a thousand bags to the poor in Zwelihle, Mount Pleasant, Hawston, Stanford and Kleinmond this Christmas. The bags containing basic food items will also include extra treats to brighten up their Christmas day. A basic bag costs about R120 to fill. The recipients receive the bags with joy and gratitude which makes the effort that much more pleasurable. Please support our cause, the banking details are: SVDP-Bags of Love, ABSA Bank, Hermanus branch, Account

Christmas Wish List DYER ISLAND CONVSERVATION TRUST

OVERSTRAND HOSPICE All people, regardless of their social or economic situation, have a right to receive high-quality care during serious illness, to a dignified death free of overwhelming pain and to bereavement support in line with their spiritual and religious needs. Overstrand Hospice strives to provide and promote this in the whole of the Overstrand area. Based in Hermanus, the Hospice provides FREE palliative home-based care to patients suffering from life-threatening end-phase illnesses such as cancer, progressive neurological disorders, organ disease and AIDS. Most studies have found that around 75% of respondents would prefer to die at home. Palliative care grows from the understanding that every patient is a unique individual with a unique story, relationships and culture, worthy of respect. This is by and large a neglected topic in South Africa, where hospices do not receive any government funding or support. The cost of care provided by Overstrand Hospice amounts to an average of R15 000 per patient. Overstrand Hospice's wish for Christmas and 2014 is that all of those who need our services should be referred early enough to fully benefit from what we have to contribute towards their care. We should also like to have no worries about finances to provide this FREE service. We need your donations. We need people willing to leave us money in their wills. We need you to buy our 600 Club tickets and stand a chance of winning in monthly draws. We need you to support our fundraising events and our Hospice Shop by donating goods and buying what others have donated. Save a penguin, support a great white shark or help us keep our beaches clean. The Trust conducts invaluable research on marine species such as great white sharks; it takes part in conservation practices to save the endangered African Penguin; and it is the key contact for marine bird and animal rescues, including whale disentanglement. Christmas is a wonderful time of year, there is no better gift than the gift of hope to an animal in need. •Give a penguin family a home at R400 (a natural breeding habitat of the African Penguin has been decimated. Artificial nests provide shelter from the elements and predators - other sea birds eat African Penguin eggs and chicks). •Help us research great white sharks at R150 (our research highlights the importance of these sharks to marine eco-systems and supports conservation efforts to protect this iconic species). •Help us keep our coast free from fishing line at R350 (marine pollution kills hundreds of thousands of marine animals and sea birds every year. Bins provide a platform for shore-based anglers to discard their fishing line responsibly). For further information, please contact Alouise Lynch at 082 907 5607 or via email at office@dict.org.za – please also visit our website at www.dict.org.za for further information on our projects.

OVERSTRAND ASSOCIATION FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES is a nonprofit organization delivering social services to people with all kinds of disabilities. In 2011 a social worker was appointed to provide social services and great success has been achieved ever since. Under the auspices of Western Cape APD, new programs and projects were introduced, e.g. the Partners for Life Project and the Parent Supporter Project, which aims to improve the lives of children with disabilities. Another big success was the Disability Week, held from 3 to 6 December 2012. More than 100 people with disabilities attended a Health Day, Kids Day and a Christmas lunch. It was a week that provided people with disabilities not only with the opportunity to speak to health professionals about their needs. Besides these wonderful events, home visits are done on a day-to-day basis. Our regular group sessions act as skills development and recreation for our clients. Our Christmas Wish List is: Volunteers, Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists, Contract work from businesses, Gifts for our Christmas party and stationery Please contact Overstrand APD Tel: 028 315 2610

CAMPHILL FARM COMMUNITY HERMANUS Has offered a unique, caring community for adults with intellectual disabilities since 1978. 58 adult residents enjoy a safe and supportive home and work structure, which focuses on their abilities rather than their disabilities, in an inclusive environment. Our profound belief is that all disabled people have the right to happy, dignified and purposeful lives. Therefore we strive to provide every one with the means to fulfill his or her potential within the safety of the community. Some higherfunctioning residents are also supported to work in local businesses in Hermanus. About one quarter of our residents are indigent. They have very little if any financial means and some have no family at all. On-going fundraising ensures that we can continue providing for the various needs of these vulnerable people. Wish list: Crockery, mattresses and lounge furniture for residential homes. One laptop and four smartphones for volunteer use. THE ROTARY CLUB OF HERMANUS Rotary is an organisation of business and professional men and women united worldwide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world. The Club has been responsible for, or involved in, everything from major infrastructural projects in Hermanus such as Rotary Way, the Cliff Path, NSRI and the Provincial Hospital. The Club's current two most important fund-raising events are the Wines-2Whales Mountain Bike Race, where assistance is given with marshalling and manning refreshment stations along the route and the annual Fine Wine & Art Auction. Our Christmas Wish List for this year is:– to have as much funds as possible to invest in training and educating the youth of Hermanus, from pre-primary to tertiary levels; to obtain 15 road bikes for distribution among the marshals who assisted us during the Wine-2-Whales Races, who have indicated that they would like to start riding but don't have funds to purchase the bikes.
