BRIGHT STARS IN THE CREATION FIRMAMENT
Creation on the cool-climate Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge near Hermanus was established in 2002 by husband and wife team, JeanClaude (JC) and Carolyn Martin. Having overcome many an obstacle, these latter-day wine pioneers now proudly uphold the Old and New World wine traditions of their respective grandparents. JC’s grandparents, Jules and Ida Martin, painstakingly established the family winery on the steep banks of Lake Bienne in Switzerland way back in 1935. Carolyn’s wine pedigree dates back to 1947 when her South African grandparents, Maurice and Eleanor Finlayson, purchased the farm Hartenberg on the slopes of Bottelary Hills in the Stellenbosch region. While proud of their wine roots, the Martins of Creation are also dedicated to constant innovation. “In our little piece of paradise every dawn brings an exciting new challenge and innovation is a way of life,” says an enthusiastic Carolyn. This trendsetting spirit has shaped their vision and led to many an accolade as reflected in their ever-growing list of awards. Among the latest achievements are two gold medals won by the Creation Reserve Pinot Noir 2012 and 2013 respectively at the 2014 Mondial des Pinots in Sierre, Switzerland. A coveted Platter five star rating confirms the outstanding quality of the 2013 Creation Reserve Pinot Noir. This superbly balanced wine shows magnificent flavours of dried fruit, raspberry and spice and is a prime example of cellarmaster JC’s Pinot panache. It was furthermore allocated a whopping 90 points by the influential US wine critic, Robert Parker. According to the Swiss-trained JC, who honed his skills on Pinot Noir, the 2013 Reserve vintage is one of his best ever, only to be rivalled by the Creation The Art of Pinot Noir 2013, a limited release wine boasting an impressive Robert Parker score of 92. Complex and utterly enchanting, this wine rewards with opulent layers of cherry and plum mingling with earthy flavours of mushroom and an elegant sprinkling of spice. “Our recently released The Art of Creation range features a single-vineyard Pinot Noir and a single-vineyard Chardonnay, with every wine the ultimate expression of its terroir,” explains JC. And speaking of Chardonnay … The Art of Chardonnay 2013 was allocated 93 points by Robert Parker, positioning it among the world’s most outstanding wines. This elegant wine is described as “exquisitely balanced … with rich vanilla pod and peach kernel contrasted by vivacious pear and bracing minerality.” Truly irresistible, as is the gorgeous 2013 Creation Chardonnay which Robert Parker deems worthy of a terrific 91 points. Renowned for their excellent balance, elegance, distinction and finesse and due to the refreshing natural acidity that cleanses the palate, all the wines in the Creation portfolio are exceptionally food-friendly and versatile. International recognition for wines produced on your doorstep! Seven Springs Vineyard produces just five wines and already celebrates Gold and Bronze Decanter World Wine Awards, Silver and Bronze International Wine Challenge Awards as well as two 4* Platter ratings….. Why would a British husband and wife team invest so much time, money and energy into the production of wine when they could be taking it easy? Speaking with Tim Pearson it is clear to see the passion they have is to produce the best wine they can from what they feel is one of the very best wine regions in South Africa. Buying land in 2006, planting in 2007 and 2008, harvesting in 2010, and here they are a few years later winning international awards; but Tim says “whilst the awards are great, and praise from the critics positive, they simply help put you on the wine map. It is the feedback from our customers that is and always will be the most important to us. Our vision is to continue to produce wines of quality that over deliver for their price point.” Believing in building a strong team, Tim and his wife Vaughan work with closely with Riana Van der Merwe as their winemaker and Peter Davison as vineyard manager, to produce a range of five wines. Each is a single varietal produced to reflect old world characteristics with new world fruit. Tim goes on to say “Our winemaker, Riana, is a very talented young lady and we are delighted to work with her, supporting her approach in the winery: one of minimal intervention. With her light touch she allows the fruit to give of its best and it is this hands-off approach which is so highly praised by the critics who talk of lingering minerality and steely precision”.
Peter Davison has been a part of the Seven Springs team since day one; overseeing the planting and care of the vines. His attention throughout the year is responsible for the production of top quality fruit and gives Riana a head start on the road to producing the 70,000 bottles each year. The Seven Springs wines: two reds (Pinot Noir and Syrah) and three whites (Sauvignon Blanc, oaked Chardonnay and unoaked Chardonnay ) are currently available at a number of local restaurants in and around Hermanus including The Marine, Grootbos Nature Reserve, Burgundy Restaurant, Fisherman's Cottage, Lemon Butta and Moggs. They are also enjoyed in the UK, Canada, Denmark, Germany and Mauritius. In the US the wines are re-branded Over The Mountain to reflect the region of origin and next year they will be exported to Belgium, Netherlands and Sweden. To run this vineyard remotely, from the northern hemisphere, makes this whole venture one which is unique in the wine world. Tim and Vaughan maximise the opportunity afforded by electronic communication: “Without the internet, Skype, email and social media etc. etc. it would simply be impossible to do what we do. Keeping track of the accounts is a challenge in itself but when you sit in your UK office and watch your computer being worked by the accountant sitting in Stellenbosch, you have to wonder what more will be possible in the future” says Vaughan. Tim is well known in the world of social media and has opened up national and international markets by his innovative use of technology. Excited about the future of Seven Springs, Tim and Vaughan are currently seeking additional investment for the building of the Seven Springs winery and tasting room. The stunning position and awesome plans for the build will ensure the R320 highway continues to attract visitors to the Overberg for some time to come. AWARD WINNING OLIVE OILS OF SOUTH AFRICA
Oh!-ne-rik; (adj.) “What dreams are made of” Pronounced Oh!-ne-rik it is a name worth remembering. Tucked away in the Kogelberg Biosphere is the exquisite farm that is Oneiric. The name Oneiric comes from the Greek meaning "to dream" and the farm and the wines are both that. A visit to Oneiric often leaves our guests speechless. With rolling hills, trout dams, picnic areas, a tasting barn and gift shop; guests often pop in for a tasting and end up spending the day. With wines which have received points in the 90's and which have received awards at numerous top wine shows around the world it is no wonder that in just 22 months Oneiric has become a firm favourite of the wine drinking community. Playing on a copper theme, with the families roots in mining, the labels all center around this theme bringing together a very metallic looking label, with each label playing on a different copper derivative.
Oneiric Wine Review August 2013 “One piece of good news is Oneiric, a new producer in the valley. The name refers to dreams and this is a wet dream in red velvet pants. The three wines tasted: a Shiraz, Cabernet and Bordeaux blend have a delicious berry-dense character. They are dreams from the bed of Mexican film director Guillermo del Toro whose Pan’s Labyrinth could have been filmed in Elgin. These are wines of character and well worth waking up for". From the article: Pink Ladies or Pinot Noir? last year on August 31st by Neil Pendock

Our Paleo lifestyle journey has been filled with the most amazing food from various sources. The ease at which I have been able to maintain the lifestyle and achieve the success I have so far is all to do with the food. I as a diabetic have tried unsuccessfully to get my daily sugar readings under control following traditional Diabetic diets, some of which were recommended by professionals both medical and nutritionists. They just did not work and I was pumping more and more insulin every 6 months after each check up. I year later on Paleo I am insulin free, still on oral meds but that will change. My health has never been better and to crown it all I am down 28 kilos. Read my full story on our website Click paleoliving.co.za Food recipes from 4 fantastic bloggers follow on the next pages.
