the top 6 final was the German rider, Hannes Ackermann, who stomped his first ever Volt body varial to dirt in qualifying in 3rd position. Motivated by the preliminary round competition, Dany Torres showed some extra style and turned down his way to his victory in the LifeProof Best Whip Contest in front of Massimo Bianconcini and the other 4 starters. After the intermission, it was Italy’s Massimo Bianconcini who would exact revenge on Spain in the Maxxis Highest Air competition, narrowly beating Jose Miralles, even as both riders missed the bar at 9.5 metres. Bianconcini took the win from one less failed attempts at the 9.0 metre height.
HANNES JOINS THE HIGH VOLTAGE CLUB
The final six riders would light up the sky over the 15 million inhabitants of Shenzhen as they intensified their charge for the top of the podium. Dany Torres stepped up with an Oxecutioner to Double Grab backflip combination in his Double Up, however even after an almost flawless run, was relegated to 6th position. Adelberg’s thunder from down under was also not enough to get close to the podium, even after an impeccable run and finishing with a California Roll to No-hander lander combo. Coming into Shenzhen and sitting in second place in the overall World Championship rankings, Maikel Melero has won 4 from the past 8 events, but even with his experience and huge tricks he wasn’t able to make it to the podium. With some uncharacteristic errors and in 4th place, he showed a few chinks in his armour, when he had seemed almost untouchable at the start of the season and now puts a small damper on his second World

The final 6 started with Rob Adelberg, who was frustrated with the outcome of yesterday’s final. Today Rob had extra motivation to produce the cleanest run he could, and after extending every trick as perfectly as possible including the California Roll to finish the Double Up. With his extra push, it was enough for Rob to improve his position by 3 places to third place and reaching the podium. Petr Pilat opened with a solid run, however the Double-Double line would claim a victim in Pilat, when he hesitated on landing a side-saddle flip, and then putting extra pressure on the next jump when he made an uncharacteristic mistake of accomplishing only a Heelclicker to save an otherwise dead sailor. Brice Izzo was also unable to capitalise on his Top 6 final and couldn’t improve his position. After a setback on Friday in 4th position, the reigning World Champion,

Maikel Melero was able to battle his way back to close to the top spot with his Double Grab Flip and ‘Melero Roll’ to make 2nd place. But it wasn’t enough to fend off his main challenger to his title, David Rinaldo. After his luggage finally arrived in the afternoon, David was able to throw down a much better run than last night when he was borrowing parts and gear from a handful of his fellow competitors. With the California Roll, Volt and Double Hart Attack flip, Rinaldo secured his spot on the hot seat by only a few points. Hannes bend his clutch lever during the landing of this Volt With only one rider left who could crash the party, Libor Podmol was set to turn Shenzhen on fire after his previous night’s win. But as quickly as the hype was built for Podmol, the wheels fell off the wagon and he could only complete one trick before retiring due to mechanical problems. On his first jump of the run, as he stood upon his seat for the Surfer take-off to Tsunami Flip, his subframe cracked and wrecked any chance of repeating his win. David Rinaldo took the victory on the second night and now leads with 12 points with 172 points in total. Followed by the reigning FIM World Champion Maikel Melero with 160 points and Rob Adelberg in 3rd position in the overall standings. It won’t be until the 7th of November before the next World Championship points will be awarded, when the FMX riders will meet again in Caraguatatuba (Sao Paulo), Brazil to push for the final run at the overall World Championship title. <<
