Our main producer is based in China, which is specialized in the production, development and supply of stainless steel cutlery for the airline and railway industry. There is also a sister company specialising in the hotel, restaurant and cruise ship market. We have approximately 25 designs in our range. These are full sets, including table size, dessert size, cocktail size, teaspoons, cake servers, and soup spoons – the whole range. We have access to a huge warehouse in Europe from where most of our stock is held available for fast delivery. Although, for the airline industry, especially, it is becoming less economical to keep stock of product without logo, as the vast majority of our business is custom-made and manufactured on a project-by-project basis. As mentioned, there is some stock held, for emergencies, but this is minimal. We also offer a special range of what we call typical airline cutlery, which is smaller, thinner and in some cases of different quality steel. In most cases these designs are the starting point of an airline decision what design they want. Airlines always want to have a logo or some kind of identification mark. They also may want to have an item longer/shorter, etc. We have our own design team, so we can also work with the airline to develop something together. Although, as mentioned the 25 designs in our range can usually accommodate most tastes. The choice of design is the most important factor in our business. Anything else is our problem. We invite potential clients to kindly study our range and bear in mind that we can make it thinner, shorter, longer, add a logo, change material – the options are almost infinite and the costs of tooling for cutlery is cheaper compared to glass or china. Some other points to bear in mind when considering the way you store and handle your stainless steel cutlery:

Corrosion: It is common to see spots of rust on airline cutlery, especially for an airline which operates to a lot of holiday destinations, when it is common that the product remains on board for the return-to- base flight. That means that dirty cutlery stays on the aircraft for many hours before it is returned to the main catering station for washing. Or indeed, if it is washed at site, (e.g. in some remote coastal locations), where the atmosphere and humidity is quite salty and in an environment which is not conducive for stainless steel, corrosion is far more likely to occur, no matter what level of quality the cutlery is. This problem can be exacerbated for instance on the blade of a knife, in particular, if it was just poorly manufactured and polished, allowing moisture and dust to adhere to the surface and start to erode it. So – a physical check of the environment is always better. Safety: Commonly the knife used by airlines has a typical 6 cm blade and the tines of the fork are usually between 3.0 and 3.5 cm in length. These were the old safety margins in regulations set by the UK Department for Transport following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States. In fact, our factory was the first manufacturer to develop this typical kind of cutlery. Then about one and a half years ago the regulations changed to be more in line with the European regulations. There is now a lot of confusion about the regulations and it is quite vague on some websites and usually either out of date or some are even completely invalid. Since our factory is the advisor to the UK Department for Transport we can provide you with the reassurance and confidence you need, to prevent any uncertainty and misunderstanding about the current regulations.
