brush up ON NAIL ART
W
ell groomed and polished nails are often the perfect finishing touch to an outfit, but what can you do to take your file and polish to the next level? We asked Lucy Goodwin at Beauty Temple to show us how they recreate some of the key catwalk trends in the salon. To create Spring/Summer nail collections we chose to use Bio Sculpture as it is really popular with our customers. This is an exceptionally durable gel treatment which not only nurtures, protects and strengthens the natural nail but gets beautiful results!
Pretty in Pastels Pastels are a key trend this season so we opted for a pretty pale yellow. We chose to use Bio Sculpture #156, Brigitte yellow, as the base colour on three nails on each hand and created complimentary nail art on the other two. The daisies were created using a polka dot tool dipped into the Bio Sculpture gel and the graphic design was created using silver nail art tape and a fine brush.
12 nottingham #fashion48
Aztec Print We also created a nail art look based on the exotic prints found on the catwalk and chose to use a nude base colour to create a demure look and also complement the models skin tone. For some of the designs the manicurist used tape to ensure straight, angular lines, however for some of it she worked freehand which takes a lot of talent!
Et Voila! A Bio Sculpture manicure can last for up to two weeks on overlays and up to three weeks with extensions, but there are a couple of things you can do to ensure you get the most from your manicure, such as using a cuticle oil to keep the nails well-conditioned.

Spring is the perfect time to have a style makeover ready for the new season trends, and we sent Rachel, a PR assistant from West Bridgford, for a day of pampering and a wardrobe consultation. HAIR AND MAKEUP by Jess at KH Hair
THE OUTFIT by Karen at Jigsaw
“I lifted the colour using three shades of blonde highlights to warm up her skin tone and cut her hair into a classic midi bob shape with long layers to create movement and make styling easier. The loose curls were created with a GHD wand, and I used Wella and Sebastian products throughout styling. For the makeup I used a range of products to complement Rachel’s skin tone and used natural tones to create an understated smoky eye look.”
“We chose an outfit from our Spring Summer 2015 collection which we felt suited Rachel’s new style – dressed up feminine daywear with authentic worn and loved washed denim. We used soft, light layers beneath a simple textured jacket which ties the whole look together. These everyday pretty separates can be mixed and matched to create great weekend looks and are all key pieces for the new season.”

FA BRIC FLOWER BROO C H What you need: An old neck tie, a needle and thread, safety pin or brooch back, glue to attach brooch back. 1. Take the small end of the tie, and roll it up tightly in a sausage. 2. Now you need to fold the tie outwards from the centre, the fold needs to be at an angle, then wrap this around the bit you have already rolled up. 3. Next you need to wrap a little bit more of the tie around and repeat the last step, folding the tie outwards at intervals. 4. Once you have nearly folded all of the tie, leave the last section and turn the rose over carefully holding it all in place. 5. Stitch the back part of the rose, making sure all layers are well secured. 6. Fold the end you have left loose over the top of the part you have just stitched, covering up the messy stitching. Look at the rose from the front and arrange it so you are happy with it then put some stitches through to hold this in place. 7. Attach your chosen fixing to the brooch back, such as a safety pin or clip. You can use hot glue to attach this, or any glue suitable for metal and fabric.

The Scene SETTING
This year’s catwalk showcases the best of Nottingham’s fashion – everything that’s seen in the show…it’s in Nottingham! As well as the fashion, it also features the event highlights of the year in the city. Here we take a look at some of the Nottingham events that have set the scene and inspired the catwalk.
NOTTINGHAM RIVIERA Summer in the city is all about the Nottingham Riviera, a beach in the city’s Old Market Square complete with Beach Bar, rides, activities and stalls for plenty of family summer fun. Clash this season’s hot jungle prints and vibrant colours as seen in this scene for a seriously beach worthy outfit! www.nottinghamriviera.co.uk
SPLENDOUR FESTIVAL A date firmly in the diary of Nottingham music lovers, Splendour music festival takes place every year at Wollaton Hall and previous year’s performers have included Jake Bugg, Tom Odell, Dizzee Rascal, Calvin Harris and many more. Inspired by festival favourites, see how vibrant prints can be worn to create an effortless easy style. www.splendourfestival.com 26 nottingham #fashion48
WOLLATON HALL As far as Nottingham buildings go, few are as iconic as Wollaton Hall. Not only was this building used as Wayne Manor, home of Batman in The Dark Knight Rises, but it is also the backdrop for our wedding scene, showing you how pastels and botanicals can be styled into ultimate wedding guest chic!
GAME CITY Described as the ‘Sundance of the video game world’, Game City is an independent games festival held right here in Nottingham. The annual event will soon have a year round presence in Nottingham’s Creative Quarter with the opening of the National Videogame Arcade on Carlton Street later this month – the perfect place to rock the stripe and check trend which you will see in this scene. www.gamecity.org
LIGHT NIGHT On the first Friday of February Nottingham comes to life with illuminations and activities through the evening leading into the night, and the bright lights have influenced the vibrant colour clashes seen worn in this scene, perfect for a fun and fabulous night out ensemble!
SPORTING EVENTS No year in Nottingham is complete without the annual sporting fixtures which take place around the city. With annual events such as the Milk Race in the City centre and the Robin Hood marathon at the Victoria Embankment, Nottingham has plenty of opportunities to proudly wear the Spring/Summer Sports Luxe tailoring. nottingham #fashion48 27

Alison, who is getting married in October, is searching for her perfect fairy tale wedding dress so we headed to Dress Place, a wedding boutique which came to life after owner Helen found the service lacking when taking her three daughters shopping for their own wedding dresses. “We begin by having a consultation with the Bride and enquire about the venue and theme of the wedding, as well as what the bride has in mind. SURE TO BE A HAPPY AND JOYOUS OCCASION, MAKE SURE YOU LOOK YOUR BEST WITH OUR TOP TIPS.
Work from the Bottom Up The first thing to consider when shopping for your outfit is getting the base right. Well fitted underwear is key as not only will it help to create a strong silhouette but it can also give you a confidence boost. Choose something that will create the perfect base shape but is also beautiful, meaning you will enjoy wearing it time and again. M&S Collection Body £27.50 • Marks and Spencer
Talk it Through
It is traditional for the Mother of the Bride to choose her dress first and then let the Mother of the Groom know what has been chosen so she can choose something complementary. While this practice may be somewhat outdated, discussing your outfits with the rest of the bridal party can make decisions easier down the line. Colours should be complementary to the wedding party, but not too similar to the bride or bridesmaids. If in doubt, opt for a neutral shade which complements your skin tone. Debut Dress • £79 • Debenhams

Focus on the Fit
Fit is as important as colour, and when choosing a style of dress or suit it is important to think about the areas of your body that you most want to emphasise. For example, if you have shapely legs then a midi dress finishing on the knee will draw the eyes to this, and if you have a defined waist then a dress that nips in here will flatter your figure. Bermuda Dress • £149 • Monsoon
No.1 Jenny Packham Dress £140 • Debenhams
Debut Floral Dress • £70 Debenhams
Comfort is Key
Dickens & Jones Blue Polka Dot Dress £150 • House of Fraser
When choosing footwear bear in mind that weddings involve a lot of standing, walking and dancing and you don’t want your heels to hold you back. Opt for a mid-heel for optimum glamour and comfort and keep the wedding venue in mind, stiletto heels and grass is a recipe for disaster!

HOTHAIR
THIS YEAR’S AWARD SEASON IS UNDERWAY AND THE A-LISTERS HAVE ONCE AGAIN BEEN GRACING THE RED CARPETS. WITH CLASSIC OLD-SCHOOL GLAMOUR STEALING THE SHOW, SIMON, ARTISTIC STYLIST AT ZULLO AND HOLLAND, SHOWS US HOW TO RECREATE THIS LOOK AT HOME. Our most requested hairstyle is definitely a loose, glamourous wave. Done in-salon, it’s perfect for a special occasion, but it’s simple enough for a groomed everyday look that can be achieved at home. For best results, style on second-day hair, though if you do have to wash and dry your hair beforehand, use Volupt Spray by Sebastian to add texture and grip and make styling easier.
1
Take 2-inch sections of hair and curl each section using straighteners. Clamp the hair in the straightener and, instead of pulling it flat, rotate the straighteners half a turn and pull the hair through. This technique can take some practice but the results are worth it.
2
Once the hair is curled, twist each section around two fingers to create a round curl and grip this to the head.
3
Repeat until all the hair has been curled and pinned, leaving the front section loose.
ZULLO AND HOLLAND 26 UPPER PARLIAMENT STREET, NOTTINGHAM NG1 2AD 0115 950 4635 38 nottingham #fashion48
TOP TIP
Invest in a Mason Pearson natural bristle brush. They may be expensive, but I swear by them for creating the perfect finish!
4
Curl the front section as before, but instead of pinning in place, use your fingers to shape curls to frame the face.
6
5
Leave to cool for five minutes, then remove the grips and brush through gently.
The more you brush out the curls, the looser the final waves will be. Once you have achieved the desired texture you can either leave this loose or use a few hair grips to create a classic style. Simply brush the hair over one shoulder and hold in place with a couple of grips. Use your fingers to push hair back over the grips to cover them. Alternatively, twist hair from behind one ear toward the other, grip in place and leave the ends loose for effortless elegance.
Rub an oil or serum through the hair using your finger tips to add shine and hold to the waves. I used Wella Professional Oil Reflections. Not only does this create a glossy and healthy finish, but you only need two or three pumps, so one ÂŁ15 bottle will last for ages.
