As this year’s search for Nottingham’s best independent business gets under way, we look back on the diverse venues that made our prestigious Top 15 list in 2014. From specialist shops and high end restaurants, to traditional eateries and live music hubs, last year’s competition to find Nottingham’s favourite independent business put a spotlight on the very best the city has to offer.

OF THE

BEST MEMSAAB • MAID MARIAN WAY

The gourmet Indian restaurant triumphed against some stiff competition (see our story on page 3).

WIRED CAFÉ BAR • PELHAM STREET

This quirky feel-good coffee bar received a highly commended award from our judging panel.

THE CHEESE SHOP • FLYING HORSE WALK

Featuring a wonderful delicatessen and specialist cheese counter, this longestablished city favourite was also highly commended by our judges.

In fact, the public vote was so tight, the unprecedented decision was made to increase the shortlist from the usual 10 to 15 businesses in order to ensure the final decision was as fair and accurate as possible. Nearly 5,000 votes were cast via Twitter, Facebook, email, the It’s in Nottingham website, printed vouchers in The Nottingham Post and in person at independent stores throughout the city. And in the end, the following great businesses went through to the judging stage:

THEA CAFFEA

COOKIE SHAKE • UPPER PARLIAMENT STREET

The popular bar offers a range of tasty milkshakes by day, whilst at night the menu changes to cocktails and shots.

BODEGA • PELHAM STREET

CHOCOLATE UTOPIA • FRIAR LANE

PAGE 45 • MARKET STREET

This superb graphic novels and comic store never fails to do well in our annual competition, with an amazing range of products to choose from.

STUDENT

E D I U G With two of the country’s leading universities on our doorstep, it’s a wonderful life for students coming to Nottingham. Whether you’re after world-class entertainment, cutting-edge fashion or lively restaurants, pubs, clubs and bars, there’s never been a better time to be a student in Nottingham. There’s a diverse range of brilliant venues for young people just waiting to be discovered – with special offers and dedicated student nights adding to the top quality, seven-days-a-week mix. And don’t forget the city has been awarded Purple Flag status, recognising it as a safe, well managed and pleasant environment after dark.

NOTTINGHAM PLAYHOUSE

LIVE MUSIC, FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT Enjoy some of the best acts in the world at renowned music venues such as the legendary Rock City on Talbot Street, or see brilliant theatre, comedy and dance at Nottingham Playhouse, Wellington Circus and The Royal Centre, Theatre Square. There are also amazing gig and club nights at Rescue Rooms, Goldsmith Street, and Bodega, Pelham Street.

SOBAR

No self-respecting Notts student would miss a night or two at eatery and funhouse Rum House, Broad Street, while you can eat to your heart’s content at the great value buffet restaurant May Sum. And if you’re after the latest movie releases with a laid back, indie focus, head to the wonderful Broadway Cinema, Broad Street.

CLUBS If you want to enjoy Nottingham’s famous clubbing scene, don’t miss a night out at Stealth, Goldsmith Street (conveniently adjoined to the Rescue Rooms bar) playing host to a mix of dance, garage, R’n’B, live music and DJs. The Forum, at The Cornerhouse, also has fantastic regular club nights as well as comedy and live music, while the Wednesday student night at Coco Tang, Bridlesmith Gate, is an unmissable part of the Nottingham itinerary.

PUBS

BARS You’re literally spoiled for choice when it comes to lively and unusual bars in our vibrant city centre. Das Kino, Fletcher Gate, is Nottingham’s only bar, restaurant and – wait for it – ping pong venue, while Cucamara, Hurt’s Yard, has a reputation for quality cocktails and shots at some of the best prices in town.

Suede Bar, Heathcoat Street, is another excellent value night out and don’t forget, if booze isn’t always your bag, try Sobar, Friar Lane – Nottingham’s first alcohol-free bar and music venue. And if it’s a special occasion, there’s nothing to match a cocktail or three at the mysterious and enigmatic Boilermaker, Carlton Street.

DAYS OUT Treat yourself to a range of fun days out right here in the city centre, with so much to choose from including a world first in the shape of The National Video Games Arcade, Carlton Street.

You can also take a peek at the underground world of the City of Caves, Broadmarsh Centre or enjoy indoor themed fun at The Lost City Adventure Golf, The Cornerhouse.

There is no shortage of atmospheric and historic public houses in the city. Why not try The Dragon, Long Row West or The Orange Tree, Shakespeare Street for starters? Meanwhile The Salutation Inn, Maid Marian Way, has a rich heritage stretching back to medieval times.

CAFES Choose from an unrivalled range of established favourites such as Wired Café Bar and Homemade, both on Pelham Street, and The Malt Cross, St James’ Street. Alternatively, why not try a newcomer such as 200 Degrees Coffee, Flying Horse Walk, where coffee is king and the in-house Chief Roaster oversees the process from bean to cup for the ultimate caffeine boost.

SHOPPING 200 DEGREES

Check out vintage fashions at Baklash, Market Street or get your hands on rare comics at nearby Page 45. If you’re a skater boy or girl head to Forty Two, Victoria Street, for all the latest gear. And make sure you check out the Hockley area for a range of brilliant fashion boutiques and alternative stores, including Braderie, Pelham Street, Ice Nine, Goose Gate and Void Clothing, Carlton Street.
