WELCOME Welcome to Nottingham Playhouse and a season of stories that celebrate Nottingham’s designation as a UNESCO City of Literature. Two significant local stories – one of national importance and one giving voice to people living on the margins of society right here in Nottingham – will be premiered on our stages this Spring. Any Means Necessary tells the story of the police working in deep cover at Ratcliffe-on-Soar and the women whose lives they invaded. Kings by Nottinghamborn playwright Daniel Hoffman-Gill explores the chaotic lives of a group of men living in a Nottingham hostel. Noises Off is one of the funniest plays ever written and beautifully demonstrates how many things can go wrong on the journey from script to stage. We’re celebrating both local and international writers this season. One of the 20th century’s finest storytellers was Tennessee Williams and The Glass Menagerie is as searing and moving today as when it was first written. Nikolai Gogol’s The Government Inspector mirrors Any Means Necessary – but this time the people are fooling the government in this classic satirical comedy. Can’t decide what to see? With a Backstage Pass you can make great savings on multiple bookings. We’re so excited to share this season with you – to welcome you back if you’re an old friend or to greet you for the first time if new to Nottingham Playhouse.

NOTTINGHAM PLAYHOUSE THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS

ANY MEANS NECESSARY BY KEFI CHADWICK ‘Once you’ve opened the door to an impossible truth, everything else becomes unstable. What’s real and what isn’t becomes impossible to tell.’ When Mel meets Dave at a protest, she believes she has met her kindred spirit. Dave soon becomes central to her life and her activist friends. But is he who he appears to be? An emotionally compelling drama that explores love, betrayal, secrets and lies and exposes the brutality of a police policy that used any means necessary to undermine political protest. Based on a true story, Any Means Necessary centres on the events surrounding a group of environmental activists and the 2011 court case which charged them with trespass at nearby Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station. This real-life event set in Nottingham uncovered a national scandal that has led to a full police apology and an admission that their officers’ behaviour was an abuse of the women’s human rights. A major public inquiry begins in early 2016 and is expected to run for three years. Director Giles Croft Designer Sara Perks Lighting Designer Chris Davey Sound Designer Adam P McCready Sponsored by

‘I am the opposite of a stage magician. He gives you illusion that has the appearance of truth. I give you truth in the pleasant disguise of illusion.’

An evocative and deeply personal play, heartfelt and passionate, from one of the 20th century’s most celebrated playwrights, Tennessee Williams.

The Glass Menagerie is seen through the memories of Tom Wingfield, a poet and a dreamer. Constrained by his life working in a warehouse and his tenement apartment, he rebels against the strictures of his controlling mother, Amanda. He escapes through the movies, fulfilling his dreams through the Hollywood greats of the 1930s. Amanda lives by her charm and the steely gentility of her Deep Southern roots, her purpose centred on finding a gentleman caller for her shy and reclusive daughter. But Laura has long since shunned the real world for one of fantasy and escapism – her menagerie of glass animals. One of the most powerful plays of the 20th century, The Glass Menagerie is a tale of love, loss and the disparate hopes and dreams of a family at odds. SAT 9 - SAT 30 APR

Riotous, raucous, hilarious, tears-rolling down-the-face, can’t-breathe-it’s-so-funny, ridiculous, perfectly glorious comedy bliss. Join us for Michael Frayn’s legendary multi-award-winning comedy Noises Off and take a trip behind the scenes as everything that could possibly go wrong… does. As a touring troupe desperately try to hold their shambolic production of ‘Nothing On’ together, and with under 24 hours to go until curtain-up, it’s downhill all the way through their dress rehearsal. Backstage antics, forgotten lines, notso-secret romances, hilarious malfunctions and a tin of sardines threaten to result in a disastrous first performance. Tony, Emmy, Critics’ Circle, twice Olivier and six times Evening Standard award-winning writer Michael Frayn’s plays include Donkey’s Years, Alarms and Excursions, Democracy and Copenhagen. Noises Off was awarded both the Olivier and Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy when it was first presented. Director Designer Lighting Designer Sound Designer

KINGS NOTTINGHAM PLAYHOUSE THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS

by Daniel Hoffmann-Gill

‘Do you know what we are mate? We are kings. We are something very bloody special indeed mate, very special and I don’t mean special bloody needs, I just mean special.’ Kings is a new play brimming with black humour, celebrating the strong friendships of a group of men living in a Nottingham hostel. One of the residents, Wayne, is finally moving into his own flat, forcing his friends to examine their own lives over Jaffa Cakes, Special Brew and a bit of a sing-song. Kings, by Nottingham-born playwright Daniel Hoffmann-Gill, bursts with the energy of the chaotic lives lived by the group and shows how friendship and dignity can thrive in the most unexpected places. WED 4 - SAT 14 MAY Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company, in association with Ramps On The Moon, present

BY NIKOLAI GOGOL

ADAPTED BY DAVID HARROWER

‘It’s not good, gentlemen. That’s why I’ve gathered you all here. An Inspector is coming…a Government Inspector!’

The Mayor is in a cold sweat. News has reached him of an imminent visit from a Government Inspector. His fear is well-founded as he has been somewhat lacking in his official duties. The hospital’s a health hazard, the school’s a war zone, the soldiers don’t have trousers to march in and he never quite got around to building that church! Surely the only possible solution is bribery; it seems to have resolved many a sticky situation for the Mayor and his team in the past! But a simple case of mistaken identity leads matters to spiral hysterically out of control. Could it be that they have met their match in the complicated business of deception? Gogol’s satirical masterpiece is a riot of corruption, lies and greed that has lost none of its original bite. Ramps On The Moon is a ground-breaking touring project that signals a step change in disability arts provision in the UK. Bringing together seven major theatre companies, it will change the way theatre made by and for D/deaf and disabled people is seen. These companies are committed to: putting D/deaf and disabled artists and audiences at the centre of their work; to accelerate positive change, and stimulate awareness of disability issues within arts and culture. COAL

‘All of us owe the comparative decency to poor drudges underground, blackened to the eyes with their throats full of coal dust, driving their shovels forward with arms and belly muscles of steel’ George Orwell (1934) Marking the 30th anniversary of the end of the 1984/5 British miners’ strike, award-winning choreographer Gary Clarke proudly presents COAL, a riveting dance theatre show which takes a nostalgic look at the hard-hitting realities of life at the coal face. Strong, powerful and emotive, COAL explores the darker underbelly of the mining industry, unearthing the true nature and body-wrecking demands of a working class industry now almost forgotten.

WAR AND PEACE

A new, live video performance based on the novel by Leo Tolstoy. ‘There was once a War that lasted so long that everyone thought that it was Peace.’ Set in a fictional time, in a fictional place, a group of artisans gather round a kitchen table to contemplate a real book and a real story called War and Peace by an author who once really lived. The performers place themselves somewhere between real life war and fictionalised wars as portrayed on the silver screen, inspired by Tolstoy’s desire to blur history with fiction. Proximity, notions of freedom, privilege, safety and the individual

versus community are discussed through the ordinariness of day-today life, in a modern-day attempt to address one of Tolstoy’s concerns: how should one live a moral life in an ethically imperfect world?

THE COMPLETE DEATHS

Co-production with Brighton Festival and Royal & Derngate Northampton

Directed and adapted by Tim Crouch

There are 75 onstage deaths in the works of William Shakespeare. From the Roman suicides in Julius Caesar to the death fall of Prince Arthur in King John; from the carnage at the end of Hamlet to snakes in a basket in Antony and Cleopatra. And then there’s the pie in Titus Andronicus. Spymonkey will perform them all. The four ‘seriously, outrageously, cleverly funny clowns’ (Time Magazine) will scale the peaks of sublime poetry, and plumb depths of darkest depravity. It may even be the death

of them. A solemn, sombre and sublimely funny tribute to the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.

A NIGHT OF FOOD AND AGONY Observer restaurant critic for over 15 years, Jay has learnt that what readers really love are reviews of bad restaurants. He examines our love affair with lousy reviews, describes his most excruciating nights out and reads the worst reviews his own work has ever received. In the second half his ensemble of top flight musicians perform tunes from the Great American food and drink songbook, accompanied by fascinating anecdotes from his life.

THEATRE FOR CHANGE In 1994, in just one hundred days, over one million people were killed during the genocide. Nottingham Playhouse Associate Director Fiona Buffini spent three months in Rwanda in 2011 working with people from all ethnic groups to produce a theatre piece challenging racist stereotypes. This is part of The Rwandan Stories of Change Project led by Dr Nicki Hitchcott at the University of Nottingham and is supported by the Aegis Trust.

THE TANNAHILL WEAVERS

This dynamic quartet play Scottish traditional music at its best. The band’s potent mixture of traditional ballads and fiery instrumentals leaves their audiences spellbound. As tight and versatile as any band in the Celtic music scene, the Tannahills can summon rock-’n’-roll intensity or haunting introspection.

‘An especially eloquent mixture of the old and the new.’

The London Gay Men’s Chorus is no ordinary choir. It started life in 1991, when nine friends sang Christmas carols at Angel Underground Station to raise money for the Terrence Higgins Trust. This once-small band of singers now calls itself the London Gay Men’s Chorus, has over 200 members and is the largest gay choir in Europe. The Chorus entertains, inspires and educates through song – performing a diverse range of music and regularly playing to sell-out crowds at the Southbank Centre, Cadogan Hall and the Roundhouse. They have also worked with artists Mark Ronson, Elton John, Lesley Garrett, Dolly Parton, Simon Callow and Sandi Toksvig.

The UK’s number one celebration of Johnny Cash, fronted by awardwinning singer/songwriter Clive John, re-creates the essence of what it was like to be at a real Cash show. Featuring Jill Schoonjans as June Carter, Amanda Stone and Louise Masters as the Carter Sisters and the ‘JC Horns’, the show takes the audience from the 1950s right up to 2002 and all the stops in between. All the greatest hits are included, along with songs from the latest album Out Among The Stars, accompanied by evocative screen images and shots from Johnny Cash’s life.

The Threepenny Opera, 2014

“There are around 11.9 million disabled people in the UK; this is roughly 19% of the population.” Everyone is welcome at Nottingham Playhouse and accessibility, of all kinds, is at the heart of everything we do. Over the years we have worked hard to achieve this - commissioning projects like White Peacock for teenagers with PMLD, extensive improvements to our building, increasing Accessible and Relaxed performances and our inclusive Participation work which includes a full Work Experience programme for young people with disabilities. We are delighted to present an exciting new project, Ramps on the Moon, which builds on the success of last year’s The Threepenny Opera. The Threepenny Opera was a fully integrated production which used live audio-description, a creative combination of BSL interpretation and captioning and a cast of disabled and non-disabled performers. With five partners across the UK, Ramps on the Moon is a groundbreaking touring project that will welcome more talented D/deaf and disabled people on our stages,

in our audiences and in our workforce. Spring brings the first play to come from the project, the hilarious satire The Government Inspector, opening at Birmingham Rep before its run at Nottingham Playhouse in May. See pages 10 and 11 for more information. Ramps on the Moon builds on our commitment to make work that reflects the diversity of our community. Kings, by Nottinghamborn playwright Daniel HoffmannGill premieres in the Neville Studio and chronicles the sometimes chaotic life in a Nottingham hostel lived by a group of men, many of whom have a disability. We are delighted to be working with Amy Trigg, a wheelchair user who will be playing Laura in The Glass Menagerie. We’re also elated to welcome Backstage in Biscuit Land, the hit of the Edinburgh Festival, which brings Jess Thom’s unique perspective on life with Tourettes to the Neville Studio. Our mission is to create world class theatre here in Nottingham that is as diverse as the community. #rampsonthemoon
