Back by popular demand, our Spring 2019 season begins with the highly acclaimed homegrown mining drama, Wonderland. After all the fantastic reviews and great audience reactions we’re excited to see it back on the main stage where it will open here in Nottingham, before its transfer to Northern Stage in Newcastle. If you missed it the first time around, now’s your chance to see it. This is followed by a stage adaptation of the Whitbread Children’s Book of the Year, David Almond’s Skellig, which follows on from the success of Holes last spring, and then the modern classic, Shelagh Stephenson’s comedy drama, The Memory of Water. We finish with a knockout punch in Kemp Power’s One Night in Miami…, which will take you to a downtown Miami motel room with Cassius Clay, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown. Spring also sees the return of Gecko and their show Missing and the incredible dance company Lost Dog with Juliet & Romeo.

What’s On

WED 12 DEC 2018 – SAT 5 JAN 2019

The kind shoemaker and his wife are very poor and only have one piece of leather left to make some shoes to sell. The shoemaker carefully cuts out the pieces of leather before going to bed, so he can make them into a pair of shoes in the morning. The next morning... what’s this? The pieces of leather are gone and, in their place, is the most beautiful pair of shoes in the world. The shoemaker and his wife sell the shoes, buy more leather, cut out the pieces ready for the next day and the same thing happens again... another pair of exquisite shoes. But who is making them? And what might they want in return? The Elves and the Shoemaker is a magical, festive retelling of the much-loved Brothers Grimm fairytale about kindness and the joy we get from helping each other. Following in the traditions of previous productions The Princess and the Frog and Town Mouse and Country Mouse, expect a show filled with fun and warmth as well as music, singing and plenty of chances to join in. FRI 8 FEB – SAT 23 FEB 2019

THE UNMISSABLE HIT OF 2018 IS BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! Nottinghamshire, 1983. Two 16-year-olds wait nervously at the pithead. Guided by a veteran miner, they descend into the brotherhood, banter, searing heat and liquid blue light of Welbeck Colliery. Meanwhile in London, an American CEO known as The Butcher is brought in to reform King Coal. Pits close and a strike is called. A Tory MP tussles with his leader’s hard line ideology, whilst an eccentric dandy is sent undercover to break up the strike. Cracks appear on all sides as the embattled miners are torn apart trying to protect their livelihoods and families. Nothing will be the same again. Wonderland is the spirited and uplifting drama written by the daughter of a Nottinghamshire miner. Expect dark humour and tension in this 360° look at the miner’s strike and the time leading up to the event. Three sisters arrive at their remote childhood home on the eve of their mother’s funeral. Having grown apart, the siblings argue and joke as they sort through their mother’s belongings and gradually confide about the realities of their own adult lives. But it’s when they move on to childhood recollections that they discover they remember things differently, leading to a series of dramatic and devastating revelations. The Memory of Water is a hilarious and heart-breaking drama about what we fear most – losing someone both in life and death. A play about family, grief and the unreliability of memory. BEFORE THEY WERE ICONS THEY WERE FRIENDS. 25 February 1964: Cassius Clay is crowned the new heavyweight champion of the world and celebrates with three of his closest friends – activist Malcolm X, American football icon Jim Brown and soul star Sam Cooke – in a downtown Miami motel room. That much we know is true. What follows is an imagined account of a fabled real-life event. Kemp Powers’ tough-talking, in-your-face drama speculates on what might have happened in that room that night. Over music, whiskey and two tubs of vanilla ice cream, the men wrangle with the change that’s gonna come. What will emerge are four legends that would define an era. Directed by Matthew Xia (director of 2018’s acclaimed production Shebeen), One Night in Miami... is a play about prejudice and brotherhood, and asks us: on which side of the fence do we stand when hard choices need to be made? Lost Dog presents

JULIET & ROMEO Lost Dog’s new show reveals the real story of Romeo and Juliet. It turns out they didn’t die in a tragic misunderstanding, they grew up and lived happily ever after. Well, they lived at least. Now they are 40ish, at least one of them is in the grips of a mid-life crisis, they feel constantly mocked by their teenage selves and haunted by the pressures of being the poster couple for romantic love. They have decided to confront their current struggles by putting on a performance – about themselves. Their therapist told them it was a terrible idea. With Lost Dog’s blend of dance, theatre and comedy this duet, directed by Olivier Award-nominated Ben Duke, takes on our cultural obsession with youth and our inevitable issues with longevity.

“Superb. Devastating realism and dark humour.”

Gecko presents

MISSING

★★★★★ The Stage

“Insightful, funny and rich. Smoulders with equal parts lust and loathing.”

Missing is a deliciously warped journey into the depths of the human psyche. Follow Lily, a woman whose soul appears to be decaying. She is very successful in life and love but something is missing... Amit Lahav’s production invites the audience to experience a series of extraordinary images, jaw-dropping choreography and a tantalising multilingual vocal landscape. The shadows of Lily’s past invite her, along with each audience member, to consider how far they have strayed from who they are and where they come from. Missing is a truly universal theatrical experience. Since 2012 it has toured to Russia, China, Georgia, Malta, Colombia, Mexico and across the UK.

★★★★ Time Out

“Squirmingly funny and no less heartbreaking.” ★★★★ The Times

EVERYTHING’S GONNA BE ALRIGHT A few years ago, it seemed unlikely that the UK would vote to leave the EU; we had a reasonable opposition to the Tory Government; Donald Trump was a buffoon who surely wasn’t going to beat Hilary Clinton and Mark was living the married suburban ideal, since then it’s all gone to absolute shit! But don’t worry as Mark thinks Every Little Thing’s Gonna Be Alright.

IT’S FUN TO PRETEND Viral sensation Rachel Parris, star of BBC’s The Mash Report, presents a comedy show packed with stand-up, song, sketches, and inevitably a sideways swipe at society. In this tour show she showcases some of her best bits, from her trademark comic anthems, to her all-too relatable, bittersweet stand-up, alongside brand new material looking at the insane events of this year. “A gifted performer”
