WELCOME Don’t miss our adaptation of the popular novel, Holes, by Louis Sachar. This heart-warming story is perfect for everyone and stars Kacey Ainsworth (EastEnders, The Worst Witch, Grantchester) and panto favourite John Elkington. We then invite you to party at Pearl and George’s shebeen in 1950s St Ann’s. Against the backdrop of the race riots, this is a story of ambition and love and is written by local playwright, Mufaro Makubika. Shebeen also won the Alfred Fagon Best New Play award even before being produced. In the Neville Studio we present the world-premiere of Lava by acclaimed young playwright, James Fritz, with our associates, Fifth Word. We also host our first AMP Night; showcasing the very best of work by local artists as part of our new programme, Amplify. Looking ahead to autumn, we have Sweet Charity, starring incredible fast-rising talent Rebecca Trehearn (Show Boat), a revival of the modern classic, Kindertransport and Alan Bennett’s epic costume drama, The Madness of George III, starring Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, League of Gentlemen). The BBC recently chose George III as one of the unmissable theatre shows of 2018. We are thrilled by the response to Adam’s first season as the new artistic director and want to thank you for your generous support in this exciting time of change at Nottingham Playhouse.

A new theatrical version of the multi-award-winning novel by Louis Sachar that went on to be a big screen smash-hit. Starring Kacey Ainsworth (Little Mo in EastEnders, The Worst Witch, Grantchester) and John Elkington (Cinderella, The Cherry Orchard, Forever Young, Noises Off). Stanley Yelnats can’t catch a break. Born into a family cursed with bad luck, it comes as no surprise when he finds himself accused of a crime he didn’t commit. Sent to a labour camp as punishment, he is tasked with digging one hole, five foot wide by five foot deep, every day. He’s told it is to build ‘character’. But the tyrannical Warden is definitely hiding something. How will Stanley and his fellow inmates deal with her demands, her two cronies, plus the fearsome rattlesnakes and yellow-spotted lizards? Will Stanley and his new friends unearth what’s really going on? Expect live music, scary puppets and breath-taking scenery. This off-beat and quirky adventure romp is perfect for adults and children aged 8 and up. ‘Do you think dreams are wasted on people like us?’ It’s a hot and humid summer in 1958 St Ann’s, Nottingham. Tempers are flaring and Teddy Boys are on the march. Jamaican couple Pearl and George (Martina Laird, Casualty Karl Collins, The Bill and Hollyoaks) are helping Caribbean migrants to cut loose by hosting a forbidden party - a Shebeen. Pearl has dreams of opening a restaurant on the Wells Road. George, a retired boxer, has hung his dreams next to his gloves. A young interracial couple are falling in love and figuring out how to be together. As tensions mount on a night filled with rum, calypso and dancing - and with the Shebeen under threat from the police - everyone is forced to confront the uncomfortable truths their relationships are built upon. Shebeen invites you to the greatest party you never knew existed. Written by winner of the 2017 Alfred Fagon award, Mufaro Makubika (How to Breathe), this story shines a light on a community under siege and the sacrifices made for love. Boy meets girl. Boy can’t talk to girl. Girl takes in the survivor of a natural disaster. A small asteroid has hit the capital city. Thousands have been displaced. And in a town far away, a young man called Vin is finding it hard to talk. The only person who seems to notice is Rachel, who resolves to find out what’s troubling him and help him find his voice again. But when Rach’s family take in the articulate and charismatic survivor of the asteroid incident, Vin’s silence is no longer her first priority. How does it feel when the suffering of others seems more legitimate than our own? Written by award-winning playwright James Fritz (Ross & Rachel, Parliament Square), LAVA rocks with raw emotion and sharp humour in this timely play about grief, masculinity and the power of expression. “James Fritz’s work is current without straining for topicality. His plays have a knack of anticipating the zeitgeist, becoming more rather than less relevant over time.” The Guardian Director

“Didn’t it ever occur to you that I might have wanted to die with you. Because I did. I never wanted to live without you.” 1930s Germany: a young Jewish girl flees Nazi persecution on a train bound for England. Finding herself in a strange country and unable to speak the language, she must shed her past in order to survive an uncertain future. 1980s England: a woman sifts through the attic as she prepares for her daughter to leave home. Memories are unearthed among the boxes and questions must be answered about a life long-buried. When thousands of Jewish child refugees were uprooted from mainland Europe and sent to England in the months leading up to World War II, they left their parents behind to an uncertain fate. In its 80th anniversary year, Kindertransport tells a raw and poignant story about the past’s powerful hold over the present. If you had survived the horror of war, what lengths would you go to protect yourself from its painful memories? Director Designer

Starring Olivier award-winner Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, The League of Gentlemen, Doctor Who, Wolf Hall, Gunpowder).
“I’ve always been myself, even when I was ill. Only now I seem myself. And that’s the important thing.” 1786. King George III is the most powerful man in the world. However his behaviour is becoming increasingly erratic as he succumbs to fits of lunacy; his mind unravelling at a dramatic pace. As the Queen and Prime Minster attempt to hide the King’s illness from his subjects, royal doctors hopelessly squabble over the correct cure, subjecting him to torturous medical treatments. Ambitious politicians and the scheming Prince begin a power struggle, endangering the stability of the crown. A play about power and identity, examining the fine line between a King and a man. The Madness of George III is an epic, multi-awarding winning drama, familiar from stage and screen. Expect grand costumes and royal pomp alongside nail-biting tension in Nottingham Playhouse’s brand new production of Alan Bennett’s moving and funny masterpiece. BEING OLD FILM SCREENING
What’s it like being old? What do you do all day? What happens to your body? We know the stereotypes: cardigans, fluffy moccasins, a dodgy hip, the blue rinse, but what is it really like being old? Being Old gets to the heart of the question, examining the good and the bad of this very human experience. This verbatim piece will shine a light on the experiences of the elderly, through the charm of a child’s-eye view, in a beautifully insightful and funny film directed by Fiona Buffini.
