WELCOME We’re delighted to present Nottingham Playhouse’s Autumn programme of events, which this year features a deliciously dark season of Sweet Vengeance. Murderous grudges, deep‑seated bitterness and gnawing guilt are played out across a trio of very different plays, with very different consequences. In Sleuth, a lover of tricks and games makes sport with his wife’s new partner – expect mind-boggling twists that will leave you guessing until the very end. In Darkness, Darkness, the criticallyacclaimed Nottingham crime writer John Harvey has adapted his own Resnick novel for the stage, as the detective is pulled back in from the edge of retirement to help solve one last case. Then the team behind 2015’s gloriously opulent production of The Duchess of Malfi return with The Revenger’s Tragedy, which sees one man enact his vengeance on a corrupt court with gleeful brutality. We are promising plenty of festive fun with this year’s panto, Aladdin, where we will travel to faraway lands on a magic carpet ride. As always you’ll be treated to songs, fabulous sets and sparkling costumes from the show that The Guardian called “a Midlands institution”. We’re also thrilled to announce a very special production for 2017. Stephen Lowe’s Touched received its premiere at Nottingham Playhouse in 1977. On its 40th Anniversary, the play returns to our stage with the BAFTA-award winning Nottingham actress Vicky McClure in the lead role of Sandra. This season promises to be an exciting few months we do hope you’ll join us.

BY ANDY BARRETT
An old man sits in a room faced with a collection of recording devices that he has collected over his long and eventful life. He opens a drawer, takes out a pipe, unscrews his flask and pours himself the first cup of tea of the day. For more than fifty years he has been recording everything that has happened to and around him and, as the years have passed, so the burden of this documentation has grown. And today he has decided to make his last tape. Based on the diaries of Tony Benn, one of Britain’s most respected, divisive and celebrated politicians, this critically‑acclaimed play returns to Nottingham Playhouse prior to a national tour. ajtc & Nottingham Playhouse present
An adaptation by Nick Wood of Mick Jackson’s award winning novel A life of fascination, obsession and deep scientific curiosity. William Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck is an eccentric Nottinghamshire aristocrat whose imagination and curiosity know no bounds. This deceptively simple man struggles to come to terms with a world that is teeming with new knowledge, ill-founded opinion and gossip. Why does he hide himself away? What is his fascination with tunnels? Will he ever unearth the secrets hidden in his memory? In a sequence of events that are often curious and frequently hilarious he reveals moments of surprising perception and wisdom. Nottingham Playhouse and ajtc have combined their talents to co‑produce a stage adaptation of Mick Jackson’s Booker Prize shortlisted novel. The result is a free-flowing, innovative performance which features live music and a specially commissioned score. The Underground Man is a delectable blend of fact and fiction in which the intriguing details of a complex life are richly explored through the vibrant imagination of a gentle soul. Director

Tales of revenge have been gloriously imagined in works of fiction for centuries. Why are we so fascinated by them? The drama in these stories comes from a blend of opposites; a mixture of good motives (desire for justice) and wicked means (violence). The opening show of our season: Anthony Shaffer’s Sleuth is an expertly written satire of the classic crime genre in which two characters fight mercilessly for power over one another through carefully calculated game play. First staged in 1970, Sleuth has won
numerous awards both here and in the US for its bewitching cunning, twists and turns. Revenge can take time, as John Harvey’s Darkness, Darkness shows; the past cannot be buried or forgotten. In this World Premiere stage production, DI Resnick is closing in on retirement when the body of a woman who went missing 30 years earlier is discovered. Vengeance can no longer wait and, in turn, Resnick has no choice but to confront the past. Despite the justice of the cause, revenge takes its toll on the

revenger in Thomas Middleton’s Jacobean play The Revenger’s Tragedy. Middleton’s black comedy explores the inevitable consequences of taking the law into your own hands. If you turn to violence, aren’t you just as immoral as the person who ‘deserves’ to die? Whether you prefer your vengeance as cunningly playful as Sleuth, as brutally brilliant as The Revenger’s Tragedy, or as haunting and poignant as Darkness, Darkness, you’ll find something to love in our Sweet Vengeance Season.

The ultimate game of cat and mouse, Sleuth is a Tony award‑winning thriller by Anthony Shaffer where nothing is quite as it seems. Andrew Wyke is a rich and successful mystery writer whose obsession with playing games is in danger of losing him everything. Luring his wife’s lover Milo to his country pile, Andrew persuades him to take part in a specially created challenge. Before long their power struggle descends into a sinister and deadly duel of wits, where nothing is off-limits. Investigating a Missing Person, Inspector Doppler attempts to untangle fact from fiction, deception from truth and murderer from victim. In Sleuth, Shaffer creates one of the most witty, suspenseful and ingenious plays of the 20th century.

8 NOTTINGHAMPLAYHOUSE.CO.UK | 0115 941 9419
Charlie Resnick, one of the most famous detectives in British crime fiction, makes his stage debut in John Harvey’s adaptation of his own bestselling novel Darkness, Darkness. Resnick is on the verge of retirement when DI Catherine Njoroge convinces him to take on one more case following the discovery of the body of Jenny Hardwick, a young woman who disappeared during the bitterly-fought miners’ strike 30 years earlier. As Resnick and Njoroge’s investigation unfolds, old wounds sustained on the Nottinghamshire picket lines are re-opened and memories of broken relationships resurface. Resnick, too, must confront the ghosts of his past and guilt for his own role in policing the strike. Darkness, Darkness displays award-winning novelist John Harvey’s ‘great gifts for sharp but compassionate characterisation’ (The Telegraph). His tense, contemporary crime thriller promises to be a poignant and compelling production at the Playhouse. Imagine a world without justice, where the rich and powerful do what they like and get away with murder. The Revenger’s Tragedy takes us behind the scenes in this world of glamour, riches and celebrity, into a seedy underworld of sex, drugs and rock and roll. Entering this lawless world, Vindice thirsts for justice and plans a dazzling revenge for the murder of his sweetheart. As he is drawn further and further into the dark heart of this group, is he in danger of becoming just as bad as the amoral people he despises? Fast-paced and irreverent, The Revenger’s Tragedy is a black comedy - the Tarantino version of Hamlet. This bold new production, brought to you by the same team behind The Duchess of Malfi, brings a contemporary edge to a timeless tale of trying to be good in a very bad world. Starring BAFTA award-winning actress, Vicky McClure (This is England, Line of Duty and Broadchurch). “The world's changing. It's not going to go back to the way it was." Stephen Lowe’s Touched is a powerful and poignant World War II drama set during the 100 days between VE and VJ Day, and centred on the lives of a family of working‑class Nottingham women. The promise of a brave new world has arrived with peace in Europe and the election of the first ever Labour government. But the fighting is not yet over. With her husband away at war and having lost her son in a tragic car accident during the blackout, Sandra is torn apart by grief. Meanwhile, her sisters – the brash Joan and naïve Betty – are brimming with hope for the future and the possibilities of new lives ahead for all of them. Directed by Matt Aston (Diary of a Football Nobody), Touched is a modern classic, celebrating the 40th anniversary of its premiere at Nottingham Playhouse.

THU 17 NOV 2016
SAT 28 JAN 2017
In March 2016 Billy Bragg and Joe Henry, guitars in hand, boarded a Los Angeles-bound train looking to reconnect with railroad travel culture and the music it inspired.
Back by popular demand, the UK’s number one celebration of Johnny Cash re‑creates the essence of what it was like to be at a real Cash show.
Winding along 2,728 miles of track over four days, the pair recorded classic railroad songs in waiting rooms and at trackside while the train paused to pick up passengers.
Taking you from the 1950s right up to 2002, all the greatest hits are included, along with songs from the latest album Out Among The Stars, accompanied by evocative screen images and shots from Johnny Cash’s life.
