WELCOME A Nottingham icon, a Pulitzer prize-winning novel, a global smash hit rock opera, a Tony® award-winning musical and a landmark British comedy are just some of the highlights in our vibrant Spring/Summer 2017 season. Touched was first produced at Nottingham Playhouse in 1977 and we’re proud to bring you this 40th anniversary production, starring Vicky McClure. Following our record-breaking production of Of Mice and Men, we are reviving Frank Galati’s brilliant adaptation of Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath in a bold new production. Tommy, The Who’s classic rock opera, now takes to the stage in its thrilling regional premiere. It is the second touring production made in association with Ramps on the Moon – a consortium of theatres across the UK that are committed to driving change in their organisations. East is East – Ayub Khan-Din’s gloriously funny, surprising and moving play is a contemporary comedy that hilariously examines perennial family strife. As part of our visiting highlights – Rent celebrates 20 fabulous years and we welcome world-class contemporary dance from Motionhouse, BalletBoyz, Mark Murphy, Lost Dog and Jasmin Vardimon. Don’t forget that Aladdin is running until 21 January 2017, welcoming back some old friends, including Dame Extraordinaire John Elkington, Rebecca Little as the Slave of the Ring, Jasmine White as the appropriately-named Princess Jasmine, Kevin McGowan as Abanazar, with Danielle Corlass as Aladdin. Next year’s pantomime, Cinderella, is also on sale so book your tickets now to get the best seats in the house. We do hope you’ll join us.

Starring BAFTA award-winning actress, Vicky McClure (This is England, Line of Duty, Broadchurch and The Secret Agent). “The world’s changing. It’s not going to go back to the way it was.” Stephen Lowe’s Touched is a powerful and poignant World War II drama set during the 100 days between VE and VJ Day, and centred on the lives of a family of working-class Nottingham women. The promise of a brave new world has arrived with peace in Europe and the election of the first ever Labour government. But the fighting is not yet over. With her husband away at war and having lost her son in a tragic car accident during the blackout, Sandra (Vicky McClure) is torn apart by grief. Meanwhile, her sisters – the brash Joan (Aisling Loftus, War and Peace, Mr Selfridge) and the naïve Betty (Chloe Harris, Call The Midwife, The Village) – are brimming with hope for the future and the possibilities of new lives ahead for all of them. Directed by Matt Aston (The Diary of a Football Nobody), join us to celebrate the 40th anniversary of this modern classic at Nottingham Playhouse. Cast also includes Sarah Beck Mather, George Boden, Esther Coles, Luke Gell, and Ian Kirkby. ‘One of the greatest of the great American novels.’ The Guardian 100 Best Novels of all time

‘A majestic adaptation... makes Steinbeck live for a new generation.’ The New York Times

Frank Galati’s ground-breaking adaptation of John Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The Grapes Of Wrath is an epic story of unity, community and survival against the odds. It is the height of the Great Depression and the Joad family are desperate. Along with thousands of others, they leave the Oklahoma Dust Bowl travelling west to California in search of work and a new life. Investing everything in the journey, driven as much by fear as by hope, will California really be their Promised Land? The Grapes of Wrath is a towering testimony to the integrity, strength and perseverance of the human spirit. A Nottingham Playhouse and Northern Stage co-production

A brand new production of the Olivier Award-winning comedy that went on to become a BAFTA-winning film sensation. Chip shop owner George has his work cut out as head of the Khan household. Back in George’s homeland, Pakistan, a father rules the house; but in 1970s Salford, as Britain evolves and rebels, his teenage children are proving quite the challenge. Sajit still has his ‘tickle-tackle’ and refuses to take his parka off. Saleem is meant to be studying engineering but is in fact drawing nude women as part of a Foundation Art course. And Abdul and Tariq are doing everything they can to avoid marrying the wealthy Mr Shah’s… hefty… daughters. Amidst chain-smoking and rounds of tea, George’s English wife Ella tries to keep the peace between the man she loves and the children who are desperately trying to find their own way in a rapidly changing world. Will Sajit ever come out of the coal shed? Can curry powder really hide the smell of contraband bacon? And what has really happened to George and Ella's eldest son, Nazir? This modern comedy classic shares the joy, chaos and love of family life. Director

FRI 10 MAR 2017 Lost Dog presents

PARADISE LOST (LIES UNOPEN BESIDE ME) Part of Dance4’s Nottdance festival

A one-man staging of Milton’s epic Paradise Lost that combines theatre, comedy and movement. This is a journey through the story of creation condensed into 75 minutes, beginning with Lucifer’s rebellion and ending with Adam and Eve’s expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Lost Dog’s Artistic Director Ben Duke plays all the characters, creates all the scenes and, despite his best efforts, falls a little short of perfection.
