WELCOME Normally this introduction would be from Stephanie Sirr and myself but, as this will effectively be my final contribution, I am flying solo. I have had a wonderful time as the Artistic Director of Nottingham Playhouse and it has brought more thrills than I had any right to expect (and far fewer spills). This brochure contains what will be both my final season (with one show missing) and my final production and I couldn’t be more pleased with the programme; a generous helping of great titles and classic stories livened up with contributions from writers and directors whose work I admire enormously. I am also delighted that we are able to announce that the brilliant Sara Pascoe is working with the equally brilliant Emmy The Great and Susannah Tresilian on what will be the funniest and funkiest Pride and Prejudice that one could imagine. I am excited to be directing my first ever Chekhov in Simon Stephens’ extraordinary version of The Cherry Orchard. Complementing this work is a veritable cornucopia (two words I’ve always wanted to use) of delights, from the return of both the award‑winning Coal and the remarkably talented Debris Stephenson to the excitement of the Nottingham Youth Theatre Takeover and the Jasmin Vardimon Company. I hope to see you here (more than once) through the year. I do hope you’ll join us.

‘A majestic adaptation... makes Steinbeck live for a new generation.’ The New York Times
Frank Galati’s ground-breaking adaptation of John Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The Grapes Of Wrath is an epic story of unity, community and survival against the odds. It is the height of the Great Depression and the Joad family is desperate. Along with thousands of others, they leave the Oklahoma Dust Bowl travelling west to California in search of work and a new life. Investing everything in the journey, driven as much by fear as by hope, will California really be their Promised Land? The Grapes of Wrath is a towering testimony to the integrity, strength and perseverance of the human spirit. This vital new production from Abbey Wright (Nuffield Southampton Theatres’ Associate Director) features a community chorus with live music from Matt Regan (Greater Belfast). A brand new production of the Olivier Award-winning comedy that went on to become a BAFTA-winning film sensation, starring Vicky Entwistle (Janice Battersby in Coronation Street) and Sabrina Sandhu (Nottingham Television Workshop and Sheep Soup). Chip shop owner George has his work cut out as head of the Khan household. Back in George’s homeland, Pakistan, a father rules the house; but in 1970s Salford, as Britain evolves and rebels, his teenage children are proving quite the challenge. Sajit still has his ‘tickle-tackle’ and refuses to take his parka off. Saleem is meant to be studying engineering but is in fact drawing nude women as part of a Foundation Art course. And Abdul and Tariq are doing everything they can to avoid marrying the wealthy Mr Shah’s… hefty… daughters. Amidst chain-smoking and rounds of tea, George’s English wife Ella tries to keep the peace between the man she loves and the children who are desperately trying to find their own way in a rapidly changing world. Will Sajit ever come out of the coal shed? Can curry powder really hide the smell of contraband bacon? And what has really happened to George and Ella's eldest son, Nazir? This modern comedy classic shares the joy, chaos and love of family life. The most famous love story our country has ever produced, yet the women don’t work, the servants don’t speak, and who cares how filthy rich Mr Darcy is when he is so arrogant and RUDE? Georgian England was a world where men had property whilst women had smelling salts and piano lessons. Lucky them. Elizabeth Bennet is witty and clever, has terrible manners and muddy shoes. But with no independence, is her ending actually happy? Or have we been distracted by Colin Firth and frilly shirts? If you've always heard people saying “Austen is so funny” and you never got it - you will now! In a brand new comic-adaptation by stand-up comedian Sara Pascoe with an original score from Emmy the Great and directed by Susannah Tresilian (Posh) prepare yourself for a playful, truthful and occasionally disrespectful* take on this brilliant novel. *Don’t be uptight about it, it’s what she would have done.

Anton Chekhov’s last and greatest play, The Cherry Orchard, tells the story of a family on the edge of ruin and a country on the brink of revolution. When Ranevskaya returns to her country home - with its famous orchard - she is torn between its past and the future. By turns tragic and funny, this new version by Olivier Award‑winner Simon Stephens (A Doll’s House, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time), is both dynamic and profound. Giles Croft has chosen this masterpiece as his final production – and first Chekhov – as Artistic Director. Leaving an incredible legacy of productions including Polygraph, Rat Pack Confidential, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Ashes, Arcadia and The Kite Runner, don’t miss Giles’ final bow at Nottingham Playhouse.
