GROUND ZERO RELIEF Email Excerpt From Kathy Anne Weir, LPN, HPP Medical Team Volunteer Tuesday, January 26, 2010
Hi Yve,
I am well and feel like in the 2 days we were here we really have made a contribution. It is sad but we feel very useful. In 24 hours we have seen a rough estimate of 200 patients counting inside the hospital and those in the hospital tents. Our first day: we went to tents-dressing open wounds or post op wounds, deciding who needs MD to evaluate for O.R. (for either debridement or amputation) And also making sure folks had antibiotics. Kathy Weir with wounded child at our partner hospital L’Hopital de la Communite
We worked inside the hospital in triage, pre-op, post op. The first day we arrived at the hospital at 9am and left the next day at 7:30pm, but I did sleep in the staff room for 2 or 3 hours. Now that Dave (another member of medical team) made sure there was no longer a shortage on night shift, there should be a more manageable schedule. Dave has become one of the hospital administrators and helps to run the hospital. As a whole the hospital has done mostly ortho surgery and delivered a few babies. Sadly we have a few of the deceased outside and their limbs; there is the issue of disposing of them as expected. But it’s not nearly as bad as at ground zero where there are many lined up. I’m not tryng to be gross or disrespectful or anything-just giving you a picture out OUR hospital in particular. We REALLY really really need nurses! Tomorrow if you can send them!! ) We are really really desperate for nurses so pls. post that also on the website. There are tons of docs doing surgery, etc but few nurses to do OR nursing, pre-op post-op, triage, wound care, vitals, give pain meds & antibiotics, IV fluids, etc.

OUR NEXT STEPS HPP is currently analyzing reports from Haiti and is in discussion with several existing and new partners to develop long-term initiatives. Haiti still needs help. While some international entities are leaving, Haiti is currently in a dilapidated state. The Haitian Professionals of Philadelphia cordially invites you to be part of Hati’s glorious rebuilding process. Everyone has a role to play. From the girl scouts of Hope Baptist Church selling cookies to raise money for Haiti, to the young man who will make Haiti his Bat Mitzvah Volunteer project, to the North Philadelphia Dream Center nonprofit agency seeking to directly re-build homes; we all can help uplift a country that should be praised for its substantial contributions to democracy. With goals of rebuilding Haiti and providing resources to the Haitian Community in Philadelphia, HPP is happy to announce that the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition (GPUAC) will be one it’s chief and key strategic partners. GPUAC & HPP has established a fund to support Haitian relief and rebuilding efforts. This fund will provide resources to organizations on the frontlines that are helping the Haitian people to rebuild their communities and lives. GPUAC unites government, business, neighborhoods, and individual initiative to improve the quality of life in the region, build wealth in urban communities, and solve emerging issues. With over 40 years of experience in the field, HPP is thankful for GPUAC’s support and guidance. The Haitian flag says “L’union Fait La Force” which means, “With Unity There is Power”. Never has our national motto been so important, as it invigorates the Haitian spirit and provides encouragement for a better Haiti. Continue to keep us in prayer and please visit our website www.hpphilly.org for information on: upcoming events, fundraisers, photos of our work in Haiti, how to become a member and partner of HPP, and mostly importantly how to celebrate the Haitian culture and its spirit of resiliency.

HPP HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF Mission Update
RESILIENT RECONSTRUCTION THROUGH SUSTAINABLE PARTNERSHPS In direct partnership with The Urban Affairs Coalition, HPP has established a fund to support Haitian Relief and rebuilding efforts. This initiative is the first of its kind and will be available to provide resources to organizations that are on the front lines in Haiti helping to create tangible and sustainable change. HPP has committed itself to ensuring that funds are spent to address five crucial redevelopment areas: L’HOPITAL DE LA COMMUNITE | Healthcare Cultivating relationship established during earthquake, it is our honor to support this community pilar in Haiti. Built in 1984, L’Hopital de la Communite has been managed by Haitian Health and Education Foundation Public Health programs. Currently they service a variety of outpatient clinics & sustain 75 inpatient beds for the community. L’Hopital provides care for upwards of 80,000 people annually serving most disadvantaged sections of Port-Au-Prince. Our relationship includes direct pipeline to Hospital administrators and serving as a conduit for medical supplies and personnel. FONKOZE | Socio-Economic & Education Haiti’s largest micro-finance institution was founded in 1994 by Haitian Catholic Priest Father Joseph Philippe. His vision was to provide the means for all haitians, even the poorest, to participate in the economic development of the country. Since it’s inception Fonkoze has developed an effective model with 10,000 new clients. Their anchor twoyears financial literacy program has solidified direct investments into the local economy. HPP and Fonkoze will engage in direct program collaboration and financial contribution to aid more local citizens provide a mean for their families. Haitian Educational Reconstruction | Education With Haiti taking steps towards rebuilding the country and its systems, one of the most important programs to revamp is Academics. Dr. Creutzer Mathurin is a senior leader in the Haitian Ministry of Education and alongside Dr. Sharon Ravitch from the University of Pennsylvania, the Haitian Professionals of Philadelphia has identified strategic collaborating areas. Ravitch is a widely recognized expert in international applied development research, and will be announced as the Senior International Advisor to the Haitian Ministry of Education for its Educational Reconstruction Plan. With the muscle of a prestigious institution such as Penn and the efforts of a determined Diaspora, the Haitian Ministry of Education hopes to mobilize its academia and create a sustainable long term system.
