First Testday for Novabike 03
»
“The difference between theory and practice in theory is much less than the difference between the theory and practice in practice” (Randal L. Schwartz) Since NovaBike stands for implementing innovative ideas into practice, it is of high importance that tests are scheduled, this to see if our modifications and developments are performed in a correct manner. This can be performed in our own facilities by performing a dyno-test. However nothing beats the real thing. It is for this reason that whenever it is possible we choose to hit the road and test on the circuit itself. On Thursday 29th of September a test day was scheduled at the circuit of Park Zandvoort … the first test organized and performed by the new team. This also meant that it was the pilot session for our new test driver, Malte Verleg … the first chance of riding the NovaBike02. Under a clear blue sky, seven sessions of approximately 20 minutes each were scheduled. However

a few adaption’s had to be made to meet the local regulation of the circuit. Due to the more strict noise restrictions a lower noise-system was developed. This decreased the level of 102 dB to 94 dB. Also new carbon fairing was produced and installed, this to avoid the risk of endangering our painted and stickered body work . A lot of valuable information is obtained, this also thanks to the data logger from Race Technology. This data will be used in further development and progress but also the driver itself can learn a lot of this resource. One aspect that came clear when analyzing this information is the fact that Malte should be able to brake more powerful. As conclusion it can be said that everything went according to plan and the new team had the chance to familiarize itself with the customs and operations that will have to be performed during the competitions.

TU DELFT OPEN DAYS
MOTORFREAKS KICXSTART
Âť
On Friday the 14th of october NovaBike was tested by two journalists, this all happened on the circuit of the royal police academy (fortunately for us NovaBike did not had to be road legal for this venture). The weather was very nice ... which is not really obvious in this later stage of the motorcycle-season ... no single cloud in the sky. After short instructions the first test driver, the one of the largest online motorcycle magazine of the Netherlands, motorfreaks.nl, could hit the road. After a few warm-up laps the second driver, of Kicxstart, had also the chance to perform a few laps. Due to the required noise limitation the motorcycle was equipped with some dB-killers, these reduced the sound-level but had also, unfortunately, a rather large impact on the performance of the NovaBike. However there was still plenty of power left to enjoy the short and windy track. Of course we are not allowed to already tell you something about the opinion and driving experience of the test drivers. For this you will have to keep an eye on the upcoming articles of motorfreaks.nl and Kicxstart Magazine ... in our opinion there was certainly no lack of interest.

Friday the21th of october and monday the 24th the annual open days of the technical university at Delft were held. Of course NovaBike was also present to promote our unique project. We received a lot of positive and enthusiastic comments and a many fellow-students showed great interest in the team and their possible participation. We had a stand at several faculties. At Aerospace engineering we received the most prominent place which was obviously very beneficial for our exposure. Here we held some demonstrations; we revved up the engine and performed some accelerations. It was nice and rewarding to hear the enthusiastic and laudatory comments, a lot of interest was shown for the technical and innovative features of the bike ... even the esthetics of the bike were numerously praised.

My name is Marijn De Bie and I am a 3rd year Aerospace Engineering student. Because of the enthusiasm of last year’s team at an interest drink, I felt myself challenged and excited to join Novabike. After this I decided to do my minor at Novabike, this means that I will be working fulltime at Novabike. My job within Novabike is chief Bodywork, this means that I am responsible for the observation of the planning within the bodywork department and it also means that I have the final responsibility of everything that has something to do with bodywork.

My name is Ron de Vries, 4th year aerospace student at the TU Delft. When I heard about NovaBike for the first time, I was immediately excited about the project. In the next week I contacted the NovaBike team, to see if I could join the team and what I could contribute to the team. My task for this year is to design a better bodywork for the NovaBike. Since I am an aerospace student my focus will be on analyzing the aerodynamics of the motorcycle. This will be done by doing a windtunnel experiment and making use of a CFD-program, which simulates the flow around an object. In this way I try to reduce the drag on the bike, by which the top speed will be increased. I am also responsible for the NovaBike website this year. With the team we are thinking of adding extra features to the website, in order to make it more interactive. These will become visible in the coming months. Finally I hope that we as the new NovaBike team, will take the project to the next level. Of course this can’t be done without the support of our sponsors!

For my minor I will optimize the air intake and the airbox. So we could gain in power and torque without an additional weight.

KTM or Kronreif & Trunkenpolz Mattighofen is an Austrian motorcycle company since 1953. To a large extent focus has been on the off-road segment … this with great success. From this segment a couple of very impressive and great engines were developed. Of course is this not the only category of motorcycles wherein KTM is active. The road-motorcycles are equally astonishing and are another proof of the quality and durability of these awesome motorcycles. The company has an unique appearance, this by combining esthetical value together with great engineering. The company is easily recognized; this by the orange color. NovaBike, as motorcycle, would be nothing without our KTM engine, this reliable and powerful engine has the name LC4 and has proven itself more than once. This year we received the R-conversion kit by KTM. The R-block of KTM, coming from a Duke R, will give us a larger stroke resulting in a more powerful engine. This engine has a large one cylinder with 690 cc of volume, and is known for its durability and sportive character. Of course is this engine and the management of it completely adjusted to race on bio-fuel … the trade mark and vision of NovaBike. It is for this reason that we would like to sincerely thank KTM and we hope that this cooperation may last for a long time.

TenCate is a multinational company that combines textile technology, chemical processes and material technology in the development of functional materials with a wide range of applications. These applications can be divided into several main categories. First there is the one of safety and protection. The purpose of this range is to protect the various professionals who have to work in occupations that have a multitude of dangers. They have to provide protection at every level and at every level of comfort. Secondly there is the concern to provide composites and fibers for the world of aerospace engineering. As third category there is the application of infrastructure and environment and last but not least products are made that can be used for sport and recreation. In these several domains, TenCate has proven itself many times and are at many aspects world leaders. One of these leading positions concerns the production of several fibers and composites. It is with these materials that TenCate supports our team, these products are essential since our whole bodywork is made of carbon fiber, which are produced by “TenCate Advanced Composites”. It can be seen as obvious that without this support, the development and production would not be possible. This is way we would sincerely like to thank TenCate for the opportunity to learn how to implement and process these highly innovative products. We hope that this cooperation may last for a long time
