From The Executive Director Did you know, according to a new study on the Forbes Corporate Social Responsibility Blog, more than 88% of consumers think companies should try to achieve their business goals while improving society and the environment and that 83% of consumers think companies should support charities and nonprofits with financial donations? Here is your opportunity to form a relationship with one of the premiere science not-for-profits on Nantucket. Relationships are the key to success for any business. This is true for for-profit as well as not-for-profit organizations. Interestingly, in Nantucket’s highly competitive jobs market you know as well as I do that it takes a lot of effort to attract and retain quality and committed employees. Interestingly, in recent surveys and in this very tight jobs market, it is striking to learn that 73% of employees consider a company’s social and environmental commitments when deciding where to work. A relationship between the Maria Mitchell Association and your business can be beneficial for you and MMA. The Maria Mitchell Association, Nantucket’s Science Center, has been a force for positive change and understanding of our natural world for over one hundred years. Each year, thousands of children and adults participate in our science classes, gaining valuable insights, confidence, and a love of our beautiful island and the sky’s above. College students obtain valuable knowledge and experience in the fields of astronomy, natural history, biology, and history that will be with them for a lifetime. Our Aquarium and museums provide some of the most enjoyable experiences to thousands of visitors and residents alike. As a business sponsor you will be recognized at various events and in the media, as well as print and social media. We can also provide promotional materials for you to proudly display at your business regarding your support of the Maria Mitchell Association for your employees and customers to see throughout the year. This is the 200th anniversary of Maria Mitchell’s birth. Won’t you consider a business sponsorship of the Maria Mitchell Association during this year? Please call Shelley Dresser at 508-228-9198 or email me at dgagnon@mariamitchell.org, so that we can talk about a program that works for you.

About the Maria Mitchell Association
The Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) is a private, non-profit organization located on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts. The MMA was founded in 1902 to preserve the legacy of Nantucket native astronomer, naturalist, librarian, and, above all, educator, Maria Mitchell. After discovering a comet in 1847, Mitchell’s international fame helped lead to many achievements and awards, including an appointment as the first American woman Professor of Astronomy at Vassar College. Maria Mitchell believed in “learning by doing” and today that philosophy is reflected in the MMA’s mission statement, programs, research projects, and other activities. The MMA operates two observatories, a natural science museum, an aquarium, and preserves the historic birthplace of Maria Mitchell. A wide variety of science and history-related programming is offered throughout the year for people of all ages. Nantucket Today reader’s survey ranked our Summer Discovery Program as number one! In 2018, the Maria Mitchell Association will commemorate the 200th birthday of Maria Mitchell with a variety of programs, lectures and events. Visit mariamitchell.org for a complete list of events. Sponsor a MMA College Intern Each summer, the MMA offers three distinctly different natural science internship programs involving twenty-four undergraduate students from around the U.S. Each of the internships focus on science, education, and public outreach. It costs the MMA approximately $5,000 to provide a stipend, housing, and to train each intern. The Outdoor Environmental Education interns touch the lives of over six hundred children during the summer while they learn to become more effective teachers, scientists, and naturalists. The Aquarium Interns reach 8,000 people through the MMA's Aquarium and its programs. The Aquarium interns interact with and learn how to care for the aquatic animals kept at the Aquarium and they share that information and their knowledge with the many visitors to the Aquarium. The Natural Science Museum interns serve over a thousand visitors as they teach about the natural history of Nantucket Island and the life that inhabits the island's unique ecosystems.
