A Safe Place Annual Report 2024

Page 1

WITH GRATITUDE

Dear Friends,

As Board Chair and Executive Director of A Safe Place, we are pleased to share our Fiscal Year 2024 Annual Report with you. In the following pages, you will find highlights of our organizational accomplishments and a financial breakdown of our revenue and expenses. You are receiving this report because of the support you provided to our organization. We are grateful for every one of you.

A Safe Place, now in existence for 37 years, has had a year of tremendous success. Our Advocates remained available 24 hours per day for every crisis call-out to the Nantucket Police Department and Nantucket Cottage Hospital in the aftermath of domestic violence and sexual assault. This year, we provided survivor services to 359 survivors and their non-offending family members and prevention education to over 1200 children in the community. In comparison to just 5 years ago, we assisted 95% more survivors in our domestic violence program and 52% more in our sexual assault program.

We are also proud to announce that we have achieved not only all the goals and objectives of our 2020 Strategic Plan, but we are also starting a new strategic planning process this month. The end result will be another 3-5 year Strategic Plan, which will guide us into the foreseeable future and keep us focused on our mission

Our accomplishments are a direct result of all of you who have supported A Safe Place over the past year(s): funders, donors, community collaborators, in-kind providers, volunteers, and friends. Thank you.

Please know that we will continue to support and empower survivors; we will continue to build awareness throughout the community; we will continue to provide prevention education - all of which fulfills our vision and answers the question we are always asking of ourselves, “How do we help our clients and how do we make the greatest impact in our community now and into the future?”

Sincerely,

SURVIVOR PROGRAMS

FREE AND CONFIDENTIAL

Domestic Violence

Advocates are available around the clock to answer our 24-hour hotline, provide crisis support as requested at Nantucket Cottage Hospital, and assist with restraining orders at the Nantucket Police Department and courthouse. Depending on specific client needs, our services can include providing basic emotional support and individual or group counseling, supplying items such as food and clothing and, in extremely high-risk situations, making safe home arrangements for survivors as part of an exit plan.

Rape Crisis

Trained Rape Crisis Counselors (RCCs) are available 24 hours a day to provide support and resources no matter when an assault occurred Our RCCs offer in-person support and advocacy at Nantucket Cottage Hospital for survivors undergoing medical exams in the aftermath of sexual assault, provide on-going support and counseling (individual or group sessions) to survivors and their family/friends, and are available for continued support for survivors who enter civil or criminal court proceedings.

Trauma Therapy

A Safe Place's trauma therapy program is designed to improve the coordination of and access to services for persons who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, exploitation, and/or have been a witness to violence. Trauma therapy services include, but are not limited to, mental health assessments, individual and group trauma therapy, advocacy, partnering with additional resources for case management, and facilitating referrals to other providers on and off the island as needed.

SURVIVOR PROGRAMS

AND CONFIDENTIAL

Supervised Visitation

The Supervised Visitation Program provides a secure and comfortable environment for children to maintain a relationship with both parents while attempting to isolate them from conflict.

A Safe Place offers a neutral environment for custody exchanges that prevents direct contact between parents/guardians, or the supervision of an entire visit between a child and a non-custodial parent or relative, where they can interact in a comfortable playroom setting while the visit is monitored by trained staff and on-site security.

Child Witness to Violence

Licensed clinicians support children and teens who have experienced or been witness to domestic, sexual or community violence, through individual and group counseling. Additionally, we currently run a youth sports and social skills group designed to improve peer relationships and teach interpersonal interaction skills that facilitate success in both the classroom and home settings. This program promotes confidence, organization, managing of emotions, healthy decision making, executive functioning, and improved peer relationships.

“The most helpful aspect for me has been the level of compassion that I have received. Feeling cared for while receiving care motivated me to keep showing up to improve my mental health.” -Local Survivor

PREVENTION EDUCATION

PREVENTION is the heart of our mission.

Prevention education is central to the mission of A Safe Place. Our public and private school classroom programs are developed using ageappropriate information and skill building. The material is also reinforced through creative projects during our ongoing collaborations with the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club. This year, we broadened our youth outreach by sponsoring a featured speaker at Nantucket High School. (See actor and author April Hernandez Castillo pictured above with NHS grades 9-12.)

Collectively, these initiatives aim to help youth build and foster healthy personal relationships while encouraging them to become mature peer and community advocates for relationships based on equality, non-violence, and respect.

WALK A MILE FOR A SAFE PLACE 2024

10th Annual Walk A Mile

In Honor of Linda Hoey

Linda Hoey began her years as a board member with A Safe Place in 2011. From 2019 to 2023, she served as Board President, bringing her vision, guidance, and compassion to our organization and its mission. She was our biggest advocate and Walk A Mile was an event she held near and dear for its ability to bring change through community connection.

Linda was a true leader with a big heart. She was honest and authentic. A no nonsense person. Two of her passions were prevention education and community outreach. She enthusiastically took on the “Walk A Mile” campaign to raise awareness of violence against women

In its early days, Walk A Mile (In Her Shoes) was a men ’ s walk – in women ’ s shoes. Colleagues remember Linda’s husband, Peter, teetering in high heels on those marches, and citing it as an example of his support for Linda’s passions. During our 2024 walk, Peter joined us once again in walking for awareness and change, while honoring our dear Linda in gratitude for the work she has done within the Nantucket community and beyond.

It could not be more appropriate that our tenth anniversary Walk A Mile For A Safe Place was dedicated to Linda Hoey.
