A Message to Our Members
I would characterize 2023 as a year when the Trust took a deep breath, got its hands around several recent initiatives, and laid the ground work for a break out 40th Anniversary this year.
On the staffing front, Betsy Grubbs stepped down following a decade of excellent stewardship as Executive Director, and Julie Ruddick Meade took over as the new ED. At the same time, I stepped into the role as head of the board, following on the very successful tenure of Clement Durkes.
Significant landscape restoration work was completed at the new Gully Road property, repopulating the beautiful dunes with native grasses and plantings, and preparing for future generations to enjoy beautiful vistas and access to a public beach.
The Trust also navigated its way through its first year as a missiondriven landlord, successfully coordinating workforce housing for both the ’Sconset Market and Claudette’s at the new Aldrich House property.
A sub-committee of the board led a major effort to complete our first strategic planning review in a decade. Over a period of four months, more than 400 Trust members and the community provided valuable input to this process, leading to four key directives for the organization: 1) continue to pursue open land conservation, 2) work to preserve Sankaty lighthouse, 3) expand efforts to protect the commercial center, and 4) move with increased urgency to sustain the village.
With a clear mandate coming from the strategic plan, the Acquisitions Committee went to work identifying and prioritizing key properties for potential protection or purchase, and initiated discussions with owners and other island conservation groups to explore creative solutions for advancing the Trust’s mission.
As 2023 came to a close, the Trust staff and board looked back feeling good about the updated strategic plan and mission, the broad-based support from the community, the progress on several new properties, and the preparations in place so we could hit the ground running and make some significant moves in 2024 to celebrate our 40th anniversary.

The weather paid some professional courtesy to the 6th Jog in the Fog, providing the requested fog for the start of the event. Showcasing the best of both worlds, the fog cleared by the finish at Sankaty Lighthouse, providing a cool and photogenic cloud cover to the celebrations at the winner’s circle.
In true Jog in the Fog (and ’Sconset) tradition, the winner’s circle included, of course, everyone at Sankaty Head on the morning of July 29, 2023. More than 34 families and 50 individuals ran from Ruddick Commons (4.05k) or walked from Butterfly Lane, congregating some 200-strong to share water and treats at the Lighthouse.
The community’s enthusiasm has made this a fun and familyoriented tradition in ’Sconset. The Trust is grateful for the leadership of founding chairs Eric and Anne Baurmeister, champion co-chairs Ashley and Benjy Ghriskey, and all the volunteers who ushered participants along the way to Sankaty and hosted the celebration. Thanks to all for making this a signature event for ’Sconset and the Trust.
