Explore! Educate! Enjoy! Born on tiny, remote Nantucket Island, Massachusetts twenty-eight miles out to sea in the early nineteenth century, a young girl with a love for mathematics and a keen interest in assisting her astronomer father would help to open the doors of science and education to young girls and women. Her legacy of learning-by-doing lives on today, as does the legacy of her work and her beliefs in equality as those threads have passed down through generations. Maria Mitchell did not realize that her work and her life would serve as an inspiration for perhaps millions and would still continue to this day, two hundred years after her birth. It's a very special year. The Maria Mitchell Association celebrates Maria Mitchell's 200th Birthday in 2018. And as you might imagine the MMA is celebrating this milestone with special programming and events throughout the year. The highlight of the summer will be the 200th Birthday celebration on August 1 on Vestal Street, right in front of the home where Maria was born. If you are on island, you won't want to miss this historic family event. I encourage you to take some time and carefully review this program guide. I am certain you will find a program or event that will spark your interest, excite your passion for science and history, and make you smile. Enjoy!
