Annual Report

2019/2020 Board of Trustees

2019 was an extraordinary year for the Community Foundation by any measure. Well over $2 million in grants were awarded through our nearly 100 charitable funds, assets increased by over $5 million, and we purchased an office to provide a permanent home for our team. There was very little time to celebrate, however, in the face of the 2020 pandemic, which overwhelmed our country and our Island. The Foundation acted quickly to create an Emergency Relief Fund, and within a very short period of time, we raised over $1 million. Immediate relief is being provided to our human service providers as they remain

FOR EMERGENCY RELIEF

in business to serve their clients. Our goal, which depends on increased fundraising, is to support many of our nonprofits through this fund as they realize devastating revenue reductions. Programs and fundraising events will be severely impacted during the summer season, and the Community Foundation will do everything it can to help.

In March 2020, the Community Foundation established the Nantucket Fund for Emergency Relief.

We are heartened by the support we received from the community during 2019 and grateful for the response to this recent crisis. Many

The goal of this fund is to sustain critical care and services during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are committed to collaborating and coordinating with all of Nantucket to ensure that we work together to serve those who are vulnerable during this time of great need.

recognize that the Community Foundation is uniquely positioned to respond to a community crisis. Community foundations across the country are working closely as trusted partners with community leaders and funders to address this global pandemic, ensuring that grants are awarded quickly and strategically. Nantucket will recover and emerge stronger than ever. New priorities will emerge, and some of our businesses and nonprofits may look different,

What a Year!

but we trust that the community spirit that is Nantucket will shine through. Your Community Foundation will be here to help. All of us at CFN thank you,

Endowing the Nantucket Fund

Nantucket Fund 2019 Contributors

Our strategic initiative to endow the Nantucket Fund began quietly in July of 2018. Through generous donors like you, this fund has grown from a modest sum to over $5.5 million, and we are well on our way to our $10 million goal. The generosity of our donors astounds us, and we are grateful for your confidence in us as we continue to address the most pressing needs in the community for both today and tomorrow.

The Nantucket Fund is a permanent endowment for our Island. Our annual grant making has become a vital resource to our Island nonprofits and the community. The 2019 grants included supporting an accessible children’s summer camp, helping replace roofs on year-round affordable rental homes, sailing excursions for our Island’s elders, transporting fresh food to the Island’s food pantry, and providing free warm meals for our Island’s homeless population.

Rising Tide Preschool

2019

Cornerstone Contributors Supporting the Foundation’s Operations $25,000+

In December of 2019, Nantucket Children’s Center (formally Wee Whalers) abruptly shut its doors. With our help, the staff and parents are creating a nonprofit to take its place, Rising Tide Preschool. Through the Community Foundation, they have opened a Field of Interest Fund to collect donations and process expenses until they obtain their nonprofit status. In addition, the Foundation awarded them a Nantucket Fund Grant to kick-start their journey to become a stable resource for our Island’s working parents and their children.

Leadership Conference

“

Scholarships

We established the Taunton Hill Fund with the Community Foundation as a way to support the Nonprofit community on-Island as well as provide invaluable educational opportunities for these community leaders. In the past two years,

In 2019, the Foundation awarded $64,000 in community scholarships to 28 local students. Each scholarship was established by donors for the purpose of helping younger generations of Nantucketers further their education through both graduate and undergraduate programs.

Margaretta and her team have expertly produced two full-day Nonprofit Leadership Conferences, which emphasized skill-building, collaboration, networking, and leadership. It has been most rewarding to work with the Foundation

2019 Contributors In December 2019, a beloved member of the community passed away. Marianne Hutton Felch was actively engaged in religious, educational, and social service pursuits on her beloved island. Her husband, CFN Trustee Bob Felch, chose to honor her legacy by creating the Marianne Hutton Felch Fund to support a group of local nonprofits that aligned with Marianne’s wishes. Many donations to this fund were made after the New Year; those donors will be listed in our 2020 Annual Report.

Community Foundation Reacts to COVID- 19

Community Foundation for Nantucket

New Office

FOR EMERGENCY RELIEF

The Nantucket Fund for Emergency Relief addresses immediate and long-term needs stemming from the COVID-19 crisis. Grants focus on providing operational assistance to our Island’s nonprofit human service providers. As of April 2020, we awarded $434,000 in grants to 15 Island organizations. To meet the ever-changing needs of many Nantucket residents during the pandemic, the Foundation designated funds within the Nantucket Fund for Emergency Relief specifically for food. The Food Initiative encourages nonprofits to partner with local restaurants to order meals for their constituents. In turn, the Foundation reimburses the nonprofits for the cost of the meals. This initiative has funded an average of 900 meals to our community.

In April 2019, we moved into our permanent home. Since opening our doors, 9B Bayberry Court has become a hub of activity. It is a place where many of our Island organizations convene, collaborate, and make a difference in our community. We are enormously grateful to everyone, especially our contractor, Rob Reid, for helping us along the way.
