One Island supported by the Community Foundation for Nantucket
Dear Friends, The past two years have been pivotal chapters in our organization’s history. COVID-19 hit Nantucket full force in 2020, creating overwhelming community needs. Our donors’ prompt and enormously generous support allowed the Community Foundation to respond immediately and throughout 2021, granting over $3.3 million to community nonprofits through our Emergency Relief Fund. In this report, we highlight our ability to help local nonprofits in the vital work they do. That work is made possible in part by our donors, and it is impossible to adequately express our thanks for your extraordinary support. We are so grateful to those who helped us achieve many milestones this year. In 2021, we awarded a record number of Nantucket Fund Grants, retired the Emergency Relief Fund, and awarded the fifth and final year of the NCH Community Health Initiative grants. Grants totaling over $3 million were awarded through all the Foundation’s charitable funds in 2021. The needs of our Island’s community grew and evolved throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, as we return to “normal,” it is clear the Foundation continues to be uniquely positioned to address the Island’s needs and create sustainable change across its nonprofit sector. We look forward to seeing many of our summer friends in person this year. Please stop by our offices at 9B Bayberry Court anytime – after two long years we are happy to have our doors open once again. With thanks,
Geoff Verney, President
Margaretta Andrews, Executive Director

Endowing the Nantucket Fund
The Nantucket Fund is the permanent endowment for the Island of Nantucket. The Nantucket Fund reaches out across the Island and supports organizations that serve those most in need. Over the past four years, the Foundation has been strategically working to endow the Nantucket Fund. Generous donations to the Nantucket Fund have made annual grants possible, and in 2021 we have rounded the bend toward our $10 million near-term goal.
Frank and Georgine Anton are steadfast supporters of the Nantucket Fund. We thank them for their generosity and spectacular fundraising efforts this past summer.
Why We Give
“
We have invested in the Nantucket Fund and have encouraged our friends to do the same because Nantucket is a real Island with real challenges. We know our donations are helping our most vulnerable residents. Without the Nantucket Fund, our Island would be a very different place.
~ Frank Anton 3

The Nantucket Fund At Work
In 2021, we awarded a record-setting $233,000 in grants through the Nantucket Fund to vital programs. These grants supported everything from prekindergarten readiness programs to accessible summer camps for children with disabilities, trauma therapy programs, and affordable housing initiatives.

In memory of
Bob Duester In July of 2021, friends of a longtime Island resident, Bob Duester, organized a golf tournament in his memory. All participants were asked to make a gift in Bob’s memory to the Nantucket Fund. Many thanks to Patti Duester, Jim Wayman, and Matt Dwyer for organizing the tournament and continuing Bob’s legacy of supporting the Nantucket community.
“
Bob’s favorite place in this world was Nantucket. The physical beauty gave his soul rest, and the people did the same. Nantucket brings people together and reminds us of how important community is. The Nantucket Fund represents what Bob loved most about the Island. ~ Patti Duester

Celebrating 5 Years of the NCH Community Health Initiative
Over the past five years, Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s Community Health Initiative has invested $4.3 million dollars in local nonprofits to address community health on Nantucket. We partnered with the Hospital to assist with this incredible community initiative. Led by Jeanne Miller, we convened leaders to discuss the Island’s most pressing needs and determine innovative ways to address community health on Nantucket. All grants addressed the following four areas of Community Health: Behavioral Health; Women’s and Children’s Health; Access to Healthcare; and Access to Housing.
We are very grateful to our Program Director Jeanne Miller for her dedication to this project. In early 2022, she retired from the Community Foundation. Jeanne has been an invaluable member of the CFN team for the past eight years. She expanded our grants program and has been a tireless advocate for our Island’s nonprofits. Thank you, Jeanne – we will miss you!

Small Friends on Nantucket is planning for its future by choosing to invest their endowment through an Organization Fund at CFN.
16
Behavioral Health Initiative This past July, we awarded an Emergency Relief grant to support a major community-wide effort to assess current challenges in the delivery and coordination of behavioral health and substance misuse services on Nantucket. The initial investment toward this project was made possible through a Community Health grant from the McCausland Foundation. Following this initial assessment, the leadership committee established a Field of Interest Fund at CFN through which we will fund initiatives identified as priorities. This group will continue to work together to strengthen and streamline behavioral healthcare delivery to our diverse Island community.

Addressing Food Insecurity on Nantucket
In late December 2021, the Foundation was awarded a $1.85 million Federal CARES Act grant. This grant is to be used to prepare for, prevent, and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and is specifically earmarked to address food insecurity. CFN is working to distribute funds from this grant over the next year to eligible nonprofits.
“
The recent Food Security Grant is a true game changer for the Island. This grant has given us the flexibility to enhance existing programs and explore new and innovative ways to feed our Island’s most vulnerable populations. This increased funding allows us to support new and expanded programs which will truly impact the Island’s food system over the next year. ~ Margaretta Andrews, Executive Director

We give to the Community Foundation for Nantucket because of the strength of the organization and its commitment to the health of the year-round community. We have had the unique opportunity to watch the Foundation grow from a great idea discussed and developed at Peggy Gifford’s dining room table to the community leader that it is today. We know that Mom would be very pleased and very proud!

Scholarships In 2021, the Foundation awarded $79,000 in community scholarships to 33 local students. Each scholarship fund was established by individuals and groups of donors to help younger generations of Nantucketers further their education through both graduate and undergraduate programs.
“
The Will Brown Scholarship has played such a tremendous role in my successes at UMass Dartmouth as it has reduced my stress level about how to finance my college education and helped further my goals of working in the medical field. It also inspired me to one day create a scholarship fund.
”
~ Tajaun Francis, NHS Graduate Class of 2019,
and recipient of the Will Brown Scholarship for all four years of his college career.

Wrapping up the Emergency Relief Fund
Although 30 miles out at sea, the Island of Nantucket and its residents felt the deep impact of the COVID-19 crisis. New and emerging needs surfaced with a velocity no one anticipated. Existing challenges intensified. The Nantucket Fund for Emergency Relief was created in March of 2020 in response to the rapidly developing effects of the pandemic on the people of the island, businesses, and nonprofits.
In early 2022, we officially retired the Nantucket Fund for Emergency Relief. We are grateful to the hundreds of generous donors who supported this initiative. We are committed to continuing to support many of the needs exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic through the Nantucket Fund.

Remembering Eileen McGrath We lost one of our Founders last year when Eileen McGrath passed away. Eileen was bright, involved, a unique spirit, and cared deeply about Nantucket. Her sometimes “salty” comments, always in good humor, were on point and helped put things in their proper perspective. Being involved with the Community Foundation’s early grant-making efforts brought her great joy, and she will be missed. 28
